I was at this concert in Worthington, MA. I was 15yrs old and went with my best friend. They handed out free, yes free posters for this concert and after the show we went back stage and Arlo signed our posters. "I still have that poster..".(say it in an Arlo story telling voice)
My brother in law sang this song to me when I was about 14 in 1974. I bought my first motorcycle when I was 15, and I've been singing it to myself ever since.
We used to play Arlo's music (& Woody & John Prine & Steve Goodman) as we drove up to my parents' ... and we would make all our son's friends learn the pickle song. I wonder how many still remember.
I was at that concert, can be seen in the front of the stage. I was studying film at the time. I shot 3-4 rolls of B&W film, developed them in my dark room, still have all of the negatives of the full concert.
She was blonde, blue eyed, perfectly fashioned 16 years...on the back of my motorcycle. Kathy Fiala. Never forgot her singing this song as we rode my first new motorcycle out of the HS parking lot. Speaking with her, decades later...she did not recall. I'm still riding.
@@8santafe Funny how some memories are etched in our minds, and discarded by others. I can imagine vividly, you pulling away smiling wide, with the hotties tits pressed against your back. 😎 ride safe
Man, I dig your story. Sad that she forgot. In '70 I gave a hot chick a ride on my 350 Ducati Sebring. I wonder if she remembers burning her nylon on the exhaust? (Thankfully her leg did not get burned, just her stocking) Haven't seen her since 1972. Hope to before our time runs out.

This song made me an Arlo Guthrie fan. In 1969 they were shooting the Alice's Restaurant movie, in the Berkshires. Some kids from my boarding school were extras. Some of those kids, turned me onto Arlo's music. I've been a fan ever since.
arlo and his father woody are two of the best story tellers to ever have lived. to the point and understandable. none of this crazy abstract poetry. =) long live arlo! RIP woody
I love storytelling - and I can say that I’m a legend in my own right and as a son (first son) of my dad how proud he must be. I’m blessed with children - grandchildren - so much LOVE and my children do exactly what I’m doing. The Guthrie’s will live forever in people’s hearts - I thank you for just being an amazing fan - over the years and following my music. Seriously - I’m so grateful to be able to share my music 🎶 to the world lisnorrog♥️
My dad used to play this in the truck on road trips. I lost him January 24th. Listening to all songs that he used to play for me when I was a child. I'm 20. He played this stuff for me when I was 3-17 years old
Real sorry about your Dad. I mean that. You carry on and make him proud. Don’t fuck up. Do something great. I’m a widowed dad who raised a son from his age of 3 when mommy died. Learn to do successful things that you love. Strive hard for those once you find them if you haven’t already. My son turns 28 next week. He has 2 music degrees, an audio engineering degree and is a smokin fiddle player. Never had his mother after age 3. Now, git out and make your Dad PROUD 👍🏻
Great song from a great man. I know Arlo personally and have ridden with him and our Indian Motorcycles. He is a down to earth person and a good family man.
When I first saw the photo of this video I knew exactly where this concert was, and I was there. This was just off Route 20, north of the town of Russell, Massachusetts. I first heard this song in the sixties when Alices restaurant was first released. I'm a year younger than Arlo and 76 I still ride my motorcycle. I remember seeing him riding his Triumph across the field in the Woodstock movie. I'm still playing drums after 64 years and I hope Arlo is around for many years to come.

At his home in Mass., he feeds the hungry, takes care of the sick, and supports the cause for the cure of Huntington's disease, which killed his father, Woody. He might even be a better person than a musician.
Saw him and his band Shenandoah. At one point in the concert they were improvising, jamming. It was an unforgettable moment fir me. I had a similar experience at a Pat Metheny concert. Pat came out solo after a break, playing a weird electronic guitar with the fretboard & body at an odd angle to each other. It was epic.

Woody was one of the best traditional American songwriters of the 20th century, and his son is one of the best singing comedians around, and this video is a good example of why. His sense of the absurd, in America and in life, is just so brilliant. In his later years, he's become more of a concert guitarist and traditionalist and less of a comedian, but his early work is on record, and that's a blessing.
