My grandfather would listen to this every Thanksgiving when i was a kid. At least twice. The last 3 Thanksgivings he was alive we lived in a different state, but, he would call me and we would listen to it together. 30 minute long distance phone calls in the 80's cost extra, but, it was worth it. My parents never complained. They knew I needed that every year. Now every year I listen to this and I can almost smell the pall malls in the air mixing with grandma's cooking and hear the squeak of his wheelchair as it moved forward. He would always put his arm around me and say, "Bill, it doesn't get any better than this. " He was right. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope love and peace finds you well.
A great memory. My best bud had to make sure that he was by the radio to catch this tune on Thanksgiving. WPLR FM in New Haven would always play it. I miss that guy. Happy Thanksgiving friend.
My Dad suffers from dementia, and I put a guitar in his hands, hoping for something to spur a memory. This is the first thing he started playing. I have - and will - always love this song. ❤
I made my kids listen to this every year on Thanksgiving, for about 45 years. They groaned and rolled their eyes. But every year, on Thanksgiving, they make their kids listen to it.
Same here ! I am 50 years old, and can remember only one , before this. My son is 7, and said, we get to listen to that awesome Thanksgiving song, on the way to Mamaw's !
My father would play this record every thanksgiving with me, my mother and three older brothers while we all helped cook. 30 years later the family is almost completely broken up, parents divorced, brothers don’t speak to each other. I’m 36 now and my father and I are the last ones that still listen every year. It’s amazing how important this silly song is to so many people, myself included. Thanksgiving is on its way folks, remember to cherish every good moment.
My mom's name was Alice, she died August 22nd of this year; we would listen to this song every Thanksgiving since I was just a kid. I'm in my room listening to it, for her.
You need to call them brothers and go "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant....excepting Alice"....and then "walk out'!:) Life is too short for funk and nonsense.:( It is too bad some siblings of ours are like that.
@futuremartillo It's the song of a generation. The movie of the same name very accurately depicts the end of our fantasies of the age of Aquarius. Arlo was a second generation musician of songs for the people.
Playing my 50 + year old vinyl record of this wonderful recording several times today, Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023. I’m 73 now. Been listening to it for many Thanksgivings. Brings back a lot of memories. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Enjoy your time with family and dear friends.
Absolutely the traditional song played on loopback in my home every year on thanksgiving day, since i was a little girl. Im 57 now and its become our comfort song. I got to meet Arlo at his home in Sebastian FL in 2005, i had tresspassed onto his dock and was fishing from it. No posted signs, and i had no idea who's home it was. A giant unmarked tour bus rolled into the driveway, and the neatest kindest gentleman walked up to me and asked if i was catching anything good, i turned chuckled and said no sir, im still just fishing, he laughed, held out his hand and introduced himself as Arlo Guthrie the property owner, of course i was embarrassed and apologized, he said your fine little lady, fish all you want...
That sounds like a tall tale to me. It's TOO folksy. You were probably just in Sebastian, were aware Arlo lived there and then fabricated this interaction. I'm not saying it didn't happen definitively, but it sounds a bit like hogwash. 🤷
I believe you because my brother met Arlo back in the day, too. He said Guthrie was very friendly and kind. One afternoon my brother saw a tour bus in the back of a local venue. He drove to the back of the venue, where Arlo's gear was being unloaded, and asked if they needed a hand. My brother helped the roadies and met Arlo. Guthrie was grateful for the extra help and let my brother watch the show from backstage. No bodyguards, security guards, stalkers, or paparazzi. The good old days.
@julesmartin6091 Wow. What a great story! I Love it. It's so good to hear that he's the kind of nice that most would imagine. Judging from the easy, light hearted humor he portrays on this album. Sadly, and all too often with many popular types, that's all that charm is. A performance. But every once in a while, a genuine gem shines through. And restores a bit of my faith in humanity. It makes me especially happy to hear that Mr Guthrie is one of those. After all, like so many other folks here, he and his classic, catchy, and wonderfully funny ditty were like honored guests in my family home every year on Thanksgiving. And still are, in my own home, one of two pretty strict Thanksgiving day traditions for my family. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without us all gathered together, listening to Alice's Restaurant and then settling in to watch "To Kill A Mocking Bird" while our house gradually fills with all the wonderful aromas of the Thanksgiving family feast to come! There have been times when I've listened to Alice's Restaurant during other times of the year, just because I felt like I needed to hear it. And I swear, even if it's the middle of April, February, whatever there's always a flash of pavlovian instinct set off in the back of my mind, that fully expects and anticipates that heavenly whiff of a turkey roasting in the oven to come along any moment... Enough even to feel a flash of deflation when reality strikes. And "Sorry. Not today!!" Slowly sinks in. Haha!! True story. And Thanks again for sharing the story of your encounter. *Sigh* What a cool few moments that must've been!! 😊 No doubt I would hav been giddy head case the whole day. LoL😂
Many don't realize the reason that this song became a Thanksgiving tradition. It was played on a lot of rock/folk radio stations on thanksgiving day. The DJs picked this song because it was so long, and it gave them time to eat whatever plate of food someone brought them, before they had to change the record.
Here we are back again guys and gals! It's been a crazy year but I hope everyone is doing the best they can to enjoy themselves this holiday! Thank you Mr. Arlo Guthrie for a tradition I hold dear. Realistically this tradition should never have crossed my path being spanish in the ghetto raised on rap music. but here i am at 32 enjoying this wonderful timeless song. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
We’re all getting older and thanksgiving isn’t quite the same anymore, but this song always makes it feel normal. Happy thanksgiving to everyone missing their families ❤️
A Family tradition for my Late Wife and late son. I still have one son left and, we are just getting to where we can listen to this without getting tears. I've allways loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's still relevant today.
same here. My late brother Ben always listened to this every year; it came out a year after I got married. We didn’t have much, but we had our family and this record!
I'm here in 2024 in have been listening to this every year for the past 20 years and will continue to for the rest of my life it's that great. Much love to everyone that sees this. Keep this classic going
In 1972 while sitting in Naples harbor a shipmate was strumming his guitar to the tune of Alice’s Restaurant. I began to sing the song all the way through. At the end, in four part harmony and with feeling, about fifteen sailors joined in. Couldn’t believe I had remembered all the lyrics.
As a 12 year old kid with a secret transistor radio under my pillow at 3:00am in small town Saskatchewan this song changed my life! Bless the radical DJ who played the entire thing. Arlo introduced me to the magic of what an acoustic guitar could do....and set me on a journey that has carried me ever since.
Never give up that secret hobby. Just something for yourself and something you enjoy. I’m 26 and I gave up a lot of those hobbies and I regret that. The internet can help explain and explore the more complicated devices.
@@TheLocomono9 If you're only 26 and you gave up playing music, please take it up again ! You're not old ! I'm 66 and regret not returning to violin lessons 13 years ago when my violin teacher moved away ! I had a friend who passed away last month at 95. He often said how he STILL regretted giving up playing the trumpet after high school ! That's about 75 years of regret ! Don't be that guy in another 70 years please.
David this from Ken Payne, love it, no Thanksgiving, untill I have this song, and also 4th of July without Sandy, by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band!
My dad always played this every year for thanksgiving. Now I'm grown and have my own kids and wife and here we are 2020 and I'm keeping the tradition for whatever reason idk XD
My father listened to this every Thanksgiving. He passed away this past June in a house fire. I will be taking over the family Thanksgiving dinner, and I will play this.
Sorry for your lose. But you can do this!!! Enjoy the holidays forever and play this song as a tradition!! That is where great traditions come from!!!?😊
I listened to this every year with my Dad. Even if I was in CT and he was in FL, I'd still call him and we'd just sit on the phone, completely quiet and listen to it. My Dad passed last June and I listened to Alice's Restaurant and cried the whole time. This year, I listened to it and just laughed and thought of him ❤️ Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
I am so sorry to hear about your Father's passing. My husband introduced this song to me and we laughed about this and made references to the lyrics all the time. My husband passed a little over 2 years ago and this song brings fond memories to me. My prayers for your strength and comfort during this undoubtedly very difficult time. Sending many cyber ((((((((hugs)))))))) Sincerely & Respectfully, Pia
I'm 67 and a Canadian but still love this story and have been listening at least once a year since about 1970 or so when I first discovered Arlo. Happy Thanksgiving to all you folks in the USA.
I was drafted and when I went to my induction physical they handed out papers and said , "Have you ever been arrested?" I raised my hand and told the Sergeant , "Yes" and he said, "What for?" and I told him, "Litterin" the Sergeant said," I've seen that movie, ain't gonna work here." So I got sent into the Army.
54 years after first hearing this masterpiece it is still a fun song to listen to. I am not American and have no American connections, but I wish everyone on the other side of the pond a Happy Thanksgiving 2021!
I have 4 older brothers and they are all born on August 15th! My oldest brother Jack passed away 3 months ago! Every Thanksgiving He listened to Alice's Restaurant! I'm having a cold Heineken ( my brother's beer of choice) and listening to Alice's Restaurant! GOD BLESS
So sorry to hear the passing of your beloved Father; just remember he lives within you through all those memories. Prayers to you and your loved ones for strength and comfort during this raw time of loss. Sincerely & Respectfully, Pia
When i got back from deployment all of us who saw action were scheduled for a psych evaluation. Me and a few guys I served with were transported to a medical facility main side to see a shrink. When we got there we found ourselves in line sitting on benches in the hallway with about 30 more Marines from various units. We were all talking and somehow the subject of this song came up. Since we were all short timers anyway and on the way out we started singing it. The staff NCO clerk there told us to shut the fuck up but the doctor had heard us, came out of his office and joined in being an Arlo Guthrie fan himself. Pretty funny.
I listened to this completely on a drive from L.I.C., N Y to Liberty, NY on Thanksgiving Day 1976, going to visit my girlfriend and her family. The song was played on WNEW-FM 102.7 at 11AM for 30 minutes. This was the most relaxing drive upstate I ever had. Thank You Arlo Gutrie.
my dad listened to this every thanksgiving at noon (up in north jersey we had a radio station that played it at that time) he passed away years ago and i continue to listen to it every thanksgiving at noon in memory of him. miss you dad, happy thanksgiving all
Hey Ryan, don't know where you're living now, but since you're from northern NJ, you and your dad probably listened to it on the same station I do in NYC. Q104.3 still plays it every Thanksgiving day at noon. I just heard it again about 10 hours ago, for about the 45th Thanksgiving in a row. Then I just found it here on RUclips to have "seconds".
@@trainman1209 So everyone knew when it was on, so you wouldn't miss it. Now you can play it whenever you want here on RUclips or a zillion other services, but back in the day all we had was radio. Now it's just become a tradition.
My wife introduced me to this tradition 25 yeas ago...she passed away two years ago Christmas...I found myself listening the moment I woke up this morning...
I was a 17 year old kid living on Long Island, NY when WBAI-FM first played Arlo's now legendary song. Friends kept calling each other to tell others to turn it on. Not only was it an instant favorite but the radio station played it nonstop all day, as I recollect. It was all we could talk about for weeks. What fun! Who knew back then that it would turn into a wonderful annual Thanksgiving tradition? Thank you Arlo!
I was one of those kids who listened to WBAI-FM, but from Central Jersey. So much good programing, in those days. Other kids listened to the latest hits, but I was hearing Abbie Hoffman, calling into Steve Post's show. Or a Lesbian Soap Opera. Or shows on a hundred different subjects, or topics. And yes, I think I first heard this song there, too. Listener Sponsored, Left-Wing Commie Radio, in New York. Those were the days... : )
started the tradition 15yrs ago with my best friend my uncle. listen to it twice every Thanksgiving. Rest easy uncle Eric hope you were listening with me.
My wife and I visited Stockbridge, Mass. about 4 years ago to see the Norman Rockwell Museum (which was fantastic) but then learned that this was the town featured in Alice's Restaurant. So, we stopped in at Alice's Restaurant and then headed over to the church. It was a beautiful sunny fall day and we had the best time enjoying the time warp of almost 50 years since we first heard Arlo's great song. To this day I use the Group W bench in talking with other people in a self-deprecating way to signify the supposed rejects that aren't allowed to sit at the "Adult Table" in life. Sadly, very few people these days remember or have ever heard of this great song and the horrible misguided war that so many Americans and Vietnamese were killed and/or traumatized in. I salute the soldiers who did their duty but despise our leaders who got us into and kept us in that war.
I went thru Stockbridge, MA several times as a kid & young adult. And for some odd reason it never occurred to me that it was connected to this song. Next I ride the motorcycle unto visit my family friend in VT. I'm gonna have to make a side trip there.
So what exactly was the name of the restaurant? As Arlo said, Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant. That's just the name of the song. And that's why he calls the song Alice's Restaurant.
This song is as Thanksgiving as turkey and pumpkin/sweet potato pie. I think that the Belchers would disagree though. They wrote their own Thanksgiving song.
It has been a tradition for the last 49 years. Everyone gets to our house at noon( our local radio station has been playing it every year at noon)to listen to Alice and sing along. We now have friends that come as well!!
I was going to ask if you lived in Dallas/Ft worth since 92.5 kzps does it at that exact time every year and has for as long as I can remember. Nice to see so many other stations and cities do the same thing. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
My dad listened to this song every thanksgiving at noon as far back in my lifetime as I can remember. After my dad passed, my mom, brother and myself make sure we always listen to it on thanksgiving. RIP daddy. We miss you.
In an era of neat little 3 minute radio hits, it's hard to believe an 18 minute epic was Arlo's must talked about song. Just goes to show that talent will always supercede convenience.
I'm a 51 year old Canadian. I haven't listened to this whole song for a while so I put on the headphones, leaned back, closed my eyes and let it play. It was a wonderful time. Thank you Arlo.
Well, here we all are again. I can't help but feel connected to all the people of the world who need this song in their life on Thanksgiving❤ I better get to cookin😊
You know, I'm 24 years old. My dad was born in 1958. I thank him every day for showing me this song as a kid so that I can listen to it now and get so much nostalgic laughter. I don't know a single person that knows about Alice's Restaurant, and I cannot tell a lie, that's horrible.
+Kevin Beattie - don't beat yourself up for it kid...just a different era, nothing more...play the song for your friends, it's as relevant now as it was then
+Kevin Beattie i am french and the same old your father and it was difficult ti listen arlo but now some young guitarist french plays arlo and life go one
Kevin Beattie I have been listening to this song since I was born, I am now 15...I thank my grandpa all the time for showing me this song. I used to ask him every time we got in the car to play it and when he didn’t I would get sad, so he would find a way to play it. My grandparents used to live 5 minutes away from me. So you could just imagine how close I was to them, than they sadly moved to Alaska 2 years ago which was really hard on me, but I get through it because I had two things to keep close to me. For my grandma: I have this stuffed frog that she gave me when I was a baby. And for my grandpa: I have Alice’s restaurant, and when ever I get sad I cuddle the frog and listen to this song. It means so much to me!
Been listening to this song every Thanksgiving for the last 40 years. The kids used to look at us like we were crazy, but at 15 and 18, they ask when it's time to play!! Happy Thanksgiving!
I've gotten my 76 year old mother into listening to this song 5 years ago, (it was her kids and brother who introduced me to this song when I was at least 9 years old ( I'm 50 now)! STILL one of my favorite songs!!!!!
I grew up in W. Stockbridge, MA. The "Hippie Church" was a landmark in our area. Alice's Restaurant was in an alley in downtown Stockbridge. I have to listen to this every Thanksgiving. If you watch the movie, there's a scene where they load into the red Micro Bus and head to "The quarry". That quarry was literally in my backyard.
@@streetsoflaredo3432 I recall the church back then. It was an uneasy mix of hippies and bikers. I never ate at Alice's in downtown Stockbridge but did eat at Alice"s at Avelock. I think it was called. We lived in South Egremont.
Every Thanksgiving on the ride to my Grandparents house, my Dad would throw a copied cassette tape of Alice’s Restaurant on. We found out that the ride to Grandmas was exactly as long as this song, driveway to driveway. We would laugh and the drive flew by. Great times. This song means so much to me as it was a big part of my childhood growing up in the 80’s. Thank you for putting this up. It makes me smile ear to ear.
I was on a trip in my new car and got hit by a reindeer. I love it! My grandson wanted to take out the dent but I told him I couldn’t because I’m a gramma that got run over by a reindeer!
From the time stamp on some of these comments im not the only person who couldn't wait to get Thanksgiving started right. Good morning fellow Alice's restaurant massacre traditionalist!!!!!
I play this song every thanksgiving in honor of my dad. Tomorrow will be ten years since he died. He played Alice’s Restaurant every year. After my mom died and he had to learn how to cook he played this on a loop while he cooked. It used to annoy me because I was a kid but after he passed some thanksgivings fell on his death anniversary. I used to be sad and listen to it alone but now that I have a family I play it every thanksgiving while I cook for my family and as we eat. I’m passing the tradition onto my children one day
+Topher TheTenth although Thanksgiving is ALWAYS on Thursdays, the DATE that this incident occurred was THURSDAY, NOV 24, 1965. So, 50 years later November 24 was yesterday. It's like your birthday, it's always the same DATE, but each year the DAY OF THE WEEK it falls on is different. I was born on a Monday. This past year, my birthday was on a Sunday.
Lol, I can't believe there are actually people that don't understand why this incident occurred on a Thursday and 50 years later the anniversary DATE is on Wednesday.
6:30 I'm more a 12:30 p.m. 1 ish person on Thanksgiving but it does happen. I prefer to start the day with coffee and pumpkin pie, to each his own though!
This has been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family since it came out. Now, 55 years later, I've lost my mom the day before Thanksgiving 2007, just lost my dad, and the lady I love lost her dad the day before yesterday. Thanks for posting this, we needed it in our home today. Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Remember them all, every one matters.
I have listened to this every year growing up. Raised my kids listening to it as we drove to their Grandparents house for Thanksgiving. Now my grandchildren are being raised with this tradition.
I play this song every Thanksgiving...Reminds me of my family,,,our traditions,,,and our discussions at the family table....I have played this every year since I first heard it in 1967 and will continue to I pass on...Thank you ..for putting a HUGE SMILE on my face...
Tammy Sigmon we, my friends and I ,. We're getting messed with a town cop so we cleaned out a barn full of garbage and put it under a bridge. When it rained it all fell out ...... They had a damn which hunt trying to find out who did it ! Never got caught. I guess statues of limitations at this point... 40 years ago !
Arlo, his brother and sister and mom grew up next door to me and my family. When he was a teenager, the whole neighborhood knew he was something special - we heard a mini-concert in his house, where he -played about 10 different instruments. Ironically, my mom gave his daughter piano lessons when she was a little girl!. When Alice was released, of course my family got the record, listened to it and thought "wow". Thanks, Joe, for posting this oxoxoxo
My mom and I have been listening to this ever since 1967 when it came out on Thanksgiving day no matter where we were we always made time to sit down and have a laugh and sing together. This is my first thanksgiving without her she passed away at 96 yrs old but I still will remain listening to this song every year and will continue ,its good memories happy Thanksgiving mom RIP
Joey Clavette I was one of those kids ... I was in trouble with the law .. they let me join the Marines .. You never hear how we painted leper Colony Hospitals .. or gave food and medical to the villages, all the children we saved.. Just keep on being blind and very dumb!
Joey Clavette The U.S. joined the world to defend South Vietnam and its interests in Southeast Asia almost 10 years after the war began, they didn't start the war or create it in any way. Should the U.S. have intervened? Maybe not to the extent that they did. Should the U.S. have done what it did during the war? No. But the war was hardly the U.S.'s fault.
I was on the beach in Australia having a ball listening to great music with fantastic friends earning great money ,so say what you like😂and it was one of the freest of all times in fact,
As for Vietnam weren't the French in there 20 yrs be for the Americans joined in with Australian kids forced into the killing fields, for what? Produced some great music and the times were big in change, Revolutionary in fact, We were told it was all about the Drug trade and who had the upper hand , as Afghanistan when the troops were there they had bumper crops😈 I would have burned all the poppies and put an end to the trafficking they were there long enough, and it cost us enough also!
High school teacher here - I play this song all day long for the week leading to Thanksgiving. Kids start by hating it, but end up loving it! Constantly getting reminders this week from former students making sure I'm still playing it! My local radio station growing up (rural CT) played it every hour on Thanksgiving - my own Thanksgiving tradition.
Officer Obie picked me up hitchiking back in 1974 in his cruiser. I thought I was screwed! He was drunk as fuck. Took me to the Stockbridge/W. Stockbridge line and dropped me off. It was as far as he could go without being out of his jurisdiction. The entire time, he lectured me on the dangers of hitchiking.

Aww, I'm sorry:( My Mom always listened every Thanksgiving too. While it played on our local classic rock station, she would tirelessly and lovingly prepare Thanksgiving dinner for all the family. Sadly, she too, passed 5 years ago. I play it every year in her memory too:) God bless.

We should not been in a war since WW2, that was the last just cause that we were a part of. When my oldest son got interested in music and started buying CD's I made him buy this album and one Beatles album. 30 years later he can still sing along to this whole song, can't sing a single Beatles tune.
This was a yearly tradition. My husband especially loved to play it after Thanksgiving dinner. He's gone now and we all still love and miss him. In memory of him I make sure to play this on Thanksgiving. Also his birthday is on Saturday. How he loved it when his birthday would fall on this day. ❤️❤️❤️ Happy Thanksgiving!!
One of my oldest, tattered cover but I love it to this day. PEACE
Well I'm a year older and always loved this "golden " song from '67. Might have something to do with the protests at the time !! Love yah all !!
I’m 73. I finally gave n and bought the CD. My old vinyl is worn out.
That is so cool!
That sounds like a tall tale to me. It's TOO folksy. You were probably just in Sebastian, were aware Arlo lived there and then fabricated this interaction. I'm not saying it didn't happen definitively, but it sounds a bit like hogwash. 🤷
@jessegilbert9568 You accuse someone of making up a story then with no evidence made one up yourself. 😂 Are you always a killer of joy?
I believe you because my brother met Arlo back in the day, too. He said Guthrie was very friendly and kind. One afternoon my brother saw a tour bus in the back of a local venue. He drove to the back of the venue, where Arlo's gear was being unloaded, and asked if they needed a hand. My brother helped the roadies and met Arlo. Guthrie was grateful for the extra help and let my brother watch the show from backstage. No bodyguards, security guards, stalkers, or paparazzi. The good old days.
@julesmartin6091
Wow.
I live in CT and years ago one of the local radio stations played this song for hours
Certainly was considerate of Arlo to create this song for all the DJs Lol.
WDVE in Pittsburgh always plays this at 12 on Thanksgiving Day every year
WBCN in Boston played it every Thanksgiving. Arlo's voice is just captivating. And his humor! We are dying laughing here. Happy Thanksgiving all.
Nothing to do with the song being set at Thanksgiving?
Here we are back again guys and gals! It's been a crazy year but I hope everyone is doing the best they can to enjoy themselves this holiday! Thank you Mr. Arlo Guthrie for a tradition I hold dear. Realistically this tradition should never have crossed my path being spanish in the ghetto raised on rap music. but here i am at 32 enjoying this wonderful timeless song. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
Fuck yeah. It’s weird but great
Cool bro I'm 73 and love it also ❤
We’re all getting older and thanksgiving isn’t quite the same anymore, but this song always makes it feel normal. Happy thanksgiving to everyone missing their families ❤️
yep!
So true. I'm listening with ya though!
Feel the same
Well said!!! 🙏🏻🇺🇸

A Family tradition for my Late Wife and late son. I still have one son left and, we are just getting to where we can listen to this without getting tears.
I've allways loved this song from the first time I heard it.
It's still relevant today.
I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤
This is my first year without Dad. I can't describe the noises I'm making when I try to sing along.
Sorry for your double loss.
My deepest condolences on your losses. If this brings you and your son joy, happy memories, then enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving 2022
Sorry for your loss.
I love this!
I am 71 years old and I try to play this song every Thanksgiving day.
Lots of nostalgia associated with it.
same here. My late brother Ben always listened to this every year; it came out a year after I got married. We didn’t have much, but we had our family and this record!
I found this song in the 80s and have been playing it ever since.
Was lucky to be at the Newport Folk Festival when he debuted this in 1966.
We were crying laughing !! Amazing story !!!
An American staple on turkey day! Goes best with some fine herb!
Also 71. Listened originally in HomeRoom, before lunch . #270 for those you want to know.
I'm here in 2024 in have been listening to this every year for the past 20 years and will continue to for the rest of my life it's that great. Much love to everyone that sees this. Keep this classic going
Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same w/out hearing this.
BEEN LISTENING TO THIS FOR 50+ Years... and I too intend to continue listening and singing along...
15, that's a good way to being a movement ;-)
Lovely experience.
Then you all went on liberty to the gut. Humpty dumpty & the campfire girls can sing backup
theres no way this happened actually no way bro
@@lukeriley7195 yup, sure did. 😊
Beautiful ~~~~~~ ⛪️

It isn’t Thanksgiving without Alice’s restaurant. Thank you Arlo.

Happy Thanksgiving to all listening today.....and any other day.
My dad always played this every year for thanksgiving. Now I'm grown and have my own kids and wife and here we are 2020 and I'm keeping the tradition for whatever reason idk XD
Thanksgiving isn't complete without at least one playing of Alice's Restaurant 💗
Don't you know it!
At least 🙄
I always wanted to get a VANITY Licence Plate that would be "GROUP W".
I agree Tara!
One helping is plenty.
My father listened to this every Thanksgiving. He passed away this past June in a house fire. I will be taking over the family Thanksgiving dinner, and I will play this.
So sorry for the loss of your dad in the fire. This thanksgiving may not be so good but each year will get easier. Happy Thanksgiving!
Sorry for your loss god bless
Sorry for your lose. But you can do this!!! Enjoy the holidays forever and play this song as a tradition!! That is where great traditions come from!!!?😊

It'd be nice - wouldn't it .....

I ❤️ this! I’m in CT and my father is from CT but is now in FL. Every Thanksgiving we listen to this!

My son reminded me last night that we have to listen on Thursday. Of course we so. Tradition. He is 46. I am 74. This song always makes me smile.
Smart kid, you brought him up right.
Pretty funny.
a precious moment!
Frickin' BRILLIANT, well done 🤗
From one marine to another I too was introduced to this song when I was active I thought it was Hilarious
That is so cool and meaningful
I absolutely love you 😘💕 thankful.
From albany listening today
my dad listened to this every thanksgiving at noon (up in north jersey we had a radio station that played it at that time) he passed away years ago and i continue to listen to it every thanksgiving at noon in memory of him. miss you dad, happy thanksgiving all
Hey Ryan, don't know where you're living now, but since you're from northern NJ, you and your dad probably listened to it on the same station I do in NYC. Q104.3 still plays it every Thanksgiving day at noon. I just heard it again about 10 hours ago, for about the 45th Thanksgiving in a row. Then I just found it here on RUclips to have "seconds".
Why noon?
@@trainman1209
So everyone knew when it was on, so you wouldn't miss it. Now you can play it whenever you want here on RUclips or a zillion other services, but back in the day all we had was radio. Now it's just become a tradition.

WBAI! My mom was mad at dad’s extravagance when he insisted on paying extra for an FM radio in the car so he could listen to it. 😊

WOW VERY COOL, DUDE YOU GET COOL POINTS
Oooh -the Group W bench! That's where parts of me have been sitting for far too many years!
Changing that immediately!
I went thru Stockbridge, MA several times as a kid & young adult. And for some odd reason it never occurred to me that it was connected to this song.
Next I ride the motorcycle unto visit my family friend in VT. I'm gonna have to make a side trip there.
Ooooh, that sounds like a bucket list item.
So what exactly was the name of the restaurant? As Arlo said, Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant. That's just the name of the song. And that's why he calls the song Alice's Restaurant.
This is a treasured tradition every year! Enjoy everyone and a Happy Thanksgiving to you all.🎶❤️

In an era of neat little 3 minute radio hits, it's hard to believe an 18 minute epic was Arlo's must talked about song. Just goes to show that talent will always supercede convenience.

It's like your birthday, it's always the same DATE, but each year the DAY OF THE WEEK it falls on is different. I was born on a Monday. This past year, my birthday was on a Sunday.

It doesn’t matter what happens, it’s not Thanksgiving without Alice’s Restaurant 🦃
I play this song every Thanksgiving...Reminds me of my family,,,our traditions,,,and our discussions at the family table....I have played this every year since I first heard it in 1967 and will continue to I pass on...Thank you ..for putting a HUGE SMILE on my face...
Yes Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie. I put that envelope under the garbage.
this was the moment I knew I must hear the entire song lol,
Tammy Sigmon we, my friends and I ,. We're getting messed with a town cop so we cleaned out a barn full of garbage and put it under a bridge. When it rained it all fell out ...... They had a damn which hunt trying to find out who did it ! Never got caught. I guess statues of limitations at this point... 40 years ago !
Me 2
60 years old and once again after 52 years I'm still listening to this Happy Thanksgiving everybody
So cool to have a front row seat to Americana. True slice of history. Thank you for sharing.

Cool, wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Arlo. Happy Thanksgiving
There is something to say about traditional. 😊
Bless you....
This takes me back to free and happy times!
you are nuts
Produced some great music and the times were big in change,
Revolutionary in fact, We were told it was all about the Drug trade and who had the upper hand , as Afghanistan when the troops were there they had bumper crops😈 I would have burned all the poppies and put an end to the trafficking they were there long enough, and it cost us enough also!
"Officer Opie, I cannot tell a lie, I PUT that envelope under that garbage!"
He was a true,Fat-Bellied,Bigoted,Officer of the Law. Glad hes dead....
@@1958NeeNee I stopped hitchin by 1970. I'm 6 and 160. I thought it was too dangerous. I also stopped picking hitchers up. I had a VW bus and there was a lot of bad blood by then.
@@1958NeeNee I hitchhiked across country 3 xs. 1st time from Ohio to Texas in 1980. 2nd time Ohio to Texas to Cali back to Texas 1981. 3rd time, u guessed it, Ohio to Texas. I met many wonderful people and truckers too. I had 1 bad incident. I now realize how crazy that was and how blessed I am.
My late husband and my family listened to this every Thanksgiving. We're still listening 🎶 😢
thanksgiving day 2020 NEEDS THIS PLAYED
Instead of "I came to talk about the draft..." it could be "I came to talk about the covid".
Im play it every year
@@earlmangrum8398 me too! It’s tradition at my house.
Yes!!! And believe it will be this year, it's tradition!
👍👍😎😎😎😎😎
Thanksgiving 2018!
Officially Thanksgiving now that I have heard the song
yup
Happy Thanksgiving to you too
Yasss!! A family tradition was listening to this in the car on the way to Grandmas on Thanksgiving
Country still running on stupid.
I'm with ya!!! 11:27 AM Eastern, it is officially Thanksgiving!!
My dad passed this last spring. Didnt know last year would be the last HappyThanksgiving I'd ever wish to him personally. This was a tradition he and my mom started. Played it twice and this is the third. Love you Dad thanks for the traditions and best memories
I first heard this 50 years ago and it never gets old. GG from 2023.
My dad always played this song on Thanksgiving but sadly he died on the 6th of October and now I'm playing it for him like he always did for me
Cara Henderson I’m sorry to hear of your loss. Celebrate the Life & Love this moment brings to you & all for whom you care. ☺️
I do Exactly the same. My one thanksgiving tradition. ❤️
Lovely
Aww, I'm sorry:( My Mom always listened every Thanksgiving too. While it played on our local classic rock station, she would tirelessly and lovingly prepare Thanksgiving dinner for all the family. Sadly, she too, passed 5 years ago. I play it every year in her memory too:) God bless.
Same my father died many years ago in October as well and he was the one that showed me this when I was a kid and we listened every year. Glad we have this to remind us of our awesome dads!
I hope it gets played every year for ever and there is no draft or war. Peace out
I hope people resist draft and war.
Joel Wendland Me to, but If our country needs us, and it's a just cause I would do anything to protect our freedoms. We should not been in a war since WW2, that was the last just cause that we were a part of. Regardless lots of love and respect for all of our service men and women, we are the ones in their hearts when they march on to the field of battle with no political motivation, just to support this wonderful dream we all live every day. I pray for the healing and unity of our country on this Thanksgiving day, God bless the USA
Amen Matt. War is for defense not aggression. But defense of others is a just cause as long as its on a volunteer basis.
Matthew Mcdaniel
We always tuned in back in the early 70's. WNEW 102.7 in NY would play this at noon Thanksgiving day.
Ed Olearczyk , I looked forward to that every year. 102.7 had the best DJs, except Scott Muni. Vin Scelsa, Dave Herman, Dan O’Neer and his brother and Maria Molito (who is now on 96.7 in Roanoke VA)
yup
The Power Loon 107.5 FM Brainerd Minnesota USA still plays it @ noon, Central Time zone! 🦃
My kid rolls her eyes out loud when I play this…and of course sing all the words- but I also know she will listen to it every Thanksgiving for the rest of her life. When I’m gone, I hope she laughs when she remembers what a good ball I am!
When my oldest son got interested in music and started buying CD's I made him buy this album and one Beatles album. 30 years later he can still sing along to this whole song, can't sing a single Beatles tune.
How can someone not sing a single Beatles tune?
Yea I call bullshit
Like the album with baby body parts cover . You have a good son .
This was a yearly tradition. My husband especially loved to play it after Thanksgiving dinner.
He's gone now and we all still love and miss him. In memory of him I make sure to play this on Thanksgiving. Also his birthday is on Saturday. How he loved it when his birthday would fall on this day.
I'm hoping all had a great day today in spite of the hard times we're all facing these days. They won't last forever. Keep hope in your hearts. We will not be defeated.
Lastly please stay safe...
🦃🕯🎶🇺🇸☮🇺🇸🎶🕯🦃
Thank you Arlo for giving my family a great tradition listening to this song on this marvelous day every year.
It’s so cool how so many radio stations across the country play this at a similar time more or less, Q104.3 FM in NY plays this too
i miss living in a place i could listern to q104.3 on the radio and npt an app

Sounds like a carbon copy of my life wow!!
Sent to my 30 year old son just now! Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Our Thanksgiving dinner was canceled this year, and I was totally lost. Then, I put this song on and let the bad vibes fall away. Thank you for saving my Thanksgiving, Arlo!
I am sorry your dinner was cancelled. I hope that you will be able to get together with your family soon and hope you still enjoy the holiday. Happy thanksgiving man
Hear, Hear!!
Hope you have a great one this year!
Shovels and rakes, and implements of destruction. .. cannot to this day see a vw microbus without this running through my head.
If I see a VW Micro Bus these days I think to myself. I must be experiencing a "flashback". Peace.
Ditto LOL. No VW Microbus will EVER pass me by without reminding me of this. :D
MASS destruction
Farrout Man!
Same, still want to know how they fit half a ton of garbage in the back of one
this song always gets a smile from me even all these years later from the first time I heard it.
Lisa winn gets a bit of a yawn from me
hehe, its from a different genra, my era, no worries.
Lisa winn Lisa, would you mind telling me what you get out of it with repeated listenings? I did enjoy it the first time.
its not something i listen to every day silly, just once in awhile when i'm in a bad or down mood ill sometimes put this on and find myself smiling before long, it brings back a lot of good, fun memories.
+Lisa winn Every Fall :) It's such a long monologue with so many memorable lines that once a year is a pretty good dose.
I am English and I now have a thanksgiving tradition thanks to Arlo
Welcome aboard
Same! It’s a lovely song, reminds me of a Wes Anderson film
teeth 😬😂
i believe if the draft ever comes back or mandatory service, i think we should bring this song back into the light that it deserves
With my crazy music and artistic family, my Aunt married Arlo- they had one baby girl- Happy Thanksgiving all! And it goes to show, things can happen in Massachusetts!!!
❤️ his daddy wrote a song in memorial of the coal miners of Centralia Coal Mine Disaster (Illinois I think 1948). My great grandfather Andrew Farley was one of the ones who died. Thank you for carrying the torch! Love Arlie-just discovered him 10 years ago
👍🦃🌲 The Beautiful Berkshires! 😎
