My grandfather would listen to this every Thanksgiving when i was a kid. At least twice. The last 3 Thanksgivings he was alive we lived in a different state, but, he would call me and we would listen to it together. 30 minute long distance phone calls in the 80's cost extra, but, it was worth it. My parents never complained. They knew I needed that every year. Now every year I listen to this and I can almost smell the pall malls in the air mixing with grandma's cooking and hear the squeak of his wheelchair as it moved forward. He would always put his arm around me and say, "Bill, it doesn't get any better than this. " He was right. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope love and peace finds you well.
A great memory. My best bud had to make sure that he was by the radio to catch this tune on Thanksgiving. WPLR FM in New Haven would always play it. I miss that guy. Happy Thanksgiving friend.
My Dad suffers from dementia, and I put a guitar in his hands, hoping for something to spur a memory. This is the first thing he started playing. I have - and will - always love this song. ❤
I made my kids listen to this every year on Thanksgiving, for about 45 years. They groaned and rolled their eyes. But every year, on Thanksgiving, they make their kids listen to it.
Same here ! I am 50 years old, and can remember only one , before this. My son is 7, and said, we get to listen to that awesome Thanksgiving song, on the way to Mamaw's !
My father would play this record every thanksgiving with me, my mother and three older brothers while we all helped cook. 30 years later the family is almost completely broken up, parents divorced, brothers don’t speak to each other. I’m 36 now and my father and I are the last ones that still listen every year. It’s amazing how important this silly song is to so many people, myself included. Thanksgiving is on its way folks, remember to cherish every good moment.
My mom's name was Alice, she died August 22nd of this year; we would listen to this song every Thanksgiving since I was just a kid. I'm in my room listening to it, for her.
You need to call them brothers and go "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant....excepting Alice"....and then "walk out'!:) Life is too short for funk and nonsense.:( It is too bad some siblings of ours are like that.
@futuremartillo It's the song of a generation. The movie of the same name very accurately depicts the end of our fantasies of the age of Aquarius. Arlo was a second generation musician of songs for the people.
Playing my 50 + year old vinyl record of this wonderful recording several times today, Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023. I’m 73 now. Been listening to it for many Thanksgivings. Brings back a lot of memories. Happy Thanksgiving to all! Enjoy your time with family and dear friends.
53 years later and here I am still listening to Alice's restaurant, wouldn't be Thanksgiving without this song. Happy Thanksgiving. It would be nice if everyone could have a happy Thanksgiving
Many don't realize the reason that this song became a Thanksgiving tradition. It was played on a lot of rock/folk radio stations on thanksgiving day. The DJs picked this song because it was so long, and it gave them time to eat whatever plate of food someone brought them, before they had to change the record.
Absolutely the traditional song played on loopback in my home every year on thanksgiving day, since i was a little girl. Im 57 now and its become our comfort song. I got to meet Arlo at his home in Sebastian FL in 2005, i had tresspassed onto his dock and was fishing from it. No posted signs, and i had no idea who's home it was. A giant unmarked tour bus rolled into the driveway, and the neatest kindest gentleman walked up to me and asked if i was catching anything good, i turned chuckled and said no sir, im still just fishing, he laughed, held out his hand and introduced himself as Arlo Guthrie the property owner, of course i was embarrassed and apologized, he said your fine little lady, fish all you want...
That sounds like a tall tale to me. It's TOO folksy. You were probably just in Sebastian, were aware Arlo lived there and then fabricated this interaction. I'm not saying it didn't happen definitively, but it sounds a bit like hogwash. 🤷
I believe you because my brother met Arlo back in the day, too. He said Guthrie was very friendly and kind. One afternoon my brother saw a tour bus in the back of a local venue. He drove to the back of the venue, where Arlo's gear was being unloaded, and asked if they needed a hand. My brother helped the roadies and met Arlo. Guthrie was grateful for the extra help and let my brother watch the show from backstage. No bodyguards, security guards, stalkers, or paparazzi. The good old days.
@julesmartin6091 Wow. What a great story! I Love it. It's so good to hear that he's the kind of nice that most would imagine. Judging from the easy, light hearted humor he portrays on this album. Sadly, and all too often with many popular types, that's all that charm is. A performance. But every once in a while, a genuine gem shines through. And restores a bit of my faith in humanity. It makes me especially happy to hear that Mr Guthrie is one of those. After all, like so many other folks here, he and his classic, catchy, and wonderfully funny ditty were like honored guests in my family home every year on Thanksgiving. And still are, in my own home, one of two pretty strict Thanksgiving day traditions for my family. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without us all gathered together, listening to Alice's Restaurant and then settling in to watch "To Kill A Mocking Bird" while our house gradually fills with all the wonderful aromas of the Thanksgiving family feast to come! There have been times when I've listened to Alice's Restaurant during other times of the year, just because I felt like I needed to hear it. And I swear, even if it's the middle of April, February, whatever there's always a flash of pavlovian instinct set off in the back of my mind, that fully expects and anticipates that heavenly whiff of a turkey roasting in the oven to come along any moment... Enough even to feel a flash of deflation when reality strikes. And "Sorry. Not today!!" Slowly sinks in. Haha!! True story. And Thanks again for sharing the story of your encounter. *Sigh* What a cool few moments that must've been!! 😊 No doubt I would hav been giddy head case the whole day. LoL😂
We’re all getting older and thanksgiving isn’t quite the same anymore, but this song always makes it feel normal. Happy thanksgiving to everyone missing their families ❤️
I've just checked husband's vinyl collection his 70's copy is still there , half a century and more later, we have nothing to play it on , but it's still treasured.
You can get decent quality, budget friendly turntable just about anywhere these days. I have 3 styles myself, a little suitcase style, a five-in-one with turntable, cassette, CD, radio and Bluetooth. Then, there's my favorite, an 80s Panasonic stereo with turntable, cassette player, radio and pretty thorough EQ.
Here we are back again guys and gals! It's been a crazy year but I hope everyone is doing the best they can to enjoy themselves this holiday! Thank you Mr. Arlo Guthrie for a tradition I hold dear. Realistically this tradition should never have crossed my path being spanish in the ghetto raised on rap music. but here i am at 32 enjoying this wonderful timeless song. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
No one listened to this with me when I was young. I found it on my own and now share it with my boys. I hope they will remember me like yall do your folks. Thank you all for sharing
Im going on 60 hell I don't know Exactly let's just say I'm 50 something going on 60 and completely forgot what I was about to say damn 😂😂😂 getting old is senile I'm learning from experience
In 1972 while sitting in Naples harbor a shipmate was strumming his guitar to the tune of Alice’s Restaurant. I began to sing the song all the way through. At the end, in four part harmony and with feeling, about fifteen sailors joined in. Couldn’t believe I had remembered all the lyrics.
As a 12 year old kid with a secret transistor radio under my pillow at 3:00am in small town Saskatchewan this song changed my life! Bless the radical DJ who played the entire thing. Arlo introduced me to the magic of what an acoustic guitar could do....and set me on a journey that has carried me ever since.
Never give up that secret hobby. Just something for yourself and something you enjoy. I’m 26 and I gave up a lot of those hobbies and I regret that. The internet can help explain and explore the more complicated devices.
@@TheLocomono9 If you're only 26 and you gave up playing music, please take it up again ! You're not old ! I'm 66 and regret not returning to violin lessons 13 years ago when my violin teacher moved away ! I had a friend who passed away last month at 95. He often said how he STILL regretted giving up playing the trumpet after high school ! That's about 75 years of regret ! Don't be that guy in another 70 years please.
My father listened to this every Thanksgiving. He passed away this past June in a house fire. I will be taking over the family Thanksgiving dinner, and I will play this.
Sorry for your lose. But you can do this!!! Enjoy the holidays forever and play this song as a tradition!! That is where great traditions come from!!!?😊
A Family tradition for my Late Wife and late son. I still have one son left and, we are just getting to where we can listen to this without getting tears. I've allways loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's still relevant today.
From the time stamp on some of these comments im not the only person who couldn't wait to get Thanksgiving started right. Good morning fellow Alice's restaurant massacre traditionalist!!!!!
I listened to this every year with my Dad. Even if I was in CT and he was in FL, I'd still call him and we'd just sit on the phone, completely quiet and listen to it. My Dad passed last June and I listened to Alice's Restaurant and cried the whole time. This year, I listened to it and just laughed and thought of him ❤️ Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
I am so sorry to hear about your Father's passing. My husband introduced this song to me and we laughed about this and made references to the lyrics all the time. My husband passed a little over 2 years ago and this song brings fond memories to me. My prayers for your strength and comfort during this undoubtedly very difficult time. Sending many cyber ((((((((hugs)))))))) Sincerely & Respectfully, Pia
I'm 67 and a Canadian but still love this story and have been listening at least once a year since about 1970 or so when I first discovered Arlo. Happy Thanksgiving to all you folks in the USA.
same here. My late brother Ben always listened to this every year; it came out a year after I got married. We didn’t have much, but we had our family and this record!
A very lovely lady I know posted the news on The Facebook yesterday. Alice; you represented the best of our times, with meals and sundry that just couldn't beat. 😎☮💚👍
my dad listened to this every thanksgiving at noon (up in north jersey we had a radio station that played it at that time) he passed away years ago and i continue to listen to it every thanksgiving at noon in memory of him. miss you dad, happy thanksgiving all
Hey Ryan, don't know where you're living now, but since you're from northern NJ, you and your dad probably listened to it on the same station I do in NYC. Q104.3 still plays it every Thanksgiving day at noon. I just heard it again about 10 hours ago, for about the 45th Thanksgiving in a row. Then I just found it here on RUclips to have "seconds".
@@trainman1209 So everyone knew when it was on, so you wouldn't miss it. Now you can play it whenever you want here on RUclips or a zillion other services, but back in the day all we had was radio. Now it's just become a tradition.
David this from Ken Payne, love it, no Thanksgiving, untill I have this song, and also 4th of July without Sandy, by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band!
My dad always played this every year for thanksgiving. Now I'm grown and have my own kids and wife and here we are 2020 and I'm keeping the tradition for whatever reason idk XD
I was drafted and when I went to my induction physical they handed out papers and said , "Have you ever been arrested?" I raised my hand and told the Sergeant , "Yes" and he said, "What for?" and I told him, "Litterin" the Sergeant said," I've seen that movie, ain't gonna work here." So I got sent into the Army.
I just found out my high school journalism teacher passed away in May. He played this song for each of his classes. So in honor of him, I am listening to it now. Rest In Peace Bryan Grey❤️
Sitting here listening and missing the family I once had. Lost my parents and sister over the past 3 years and this was our tradition. Dad had the album and played it non-stop on the turntable on Thanksgiving Day. We always had a full house since he was in the Air Force and all the young men that couldn't go home would be at our home. He threatened them immensely not to flirt with his daughters which we were not aware of for many years afterwards. I didn't understand the meaning until I was grown. I miss them. I am having my two grown kids, their wives and grandchildren over this year and while I do not have the album, I do have a smart tv, so the tradition continues.
54 years after first hearing this masterpiece it is still a fun song to listen to. I am not American and have no American connections, but I wish everyone on the other side of the pond a Happy Thanksgiving 2021!
I'm here in 2024 in have been listening to this every year for the past 20 years and will continue to for the rest of my life it's that great. Much love to everyone that sees this. Keep this classic going
I was a 17 year old kid living on Long Island, NY when WBAI-FM first played Arlo's now legendary song. Friends kept calling each other to tell others to turn it on. Not only was it an instant favorite but the radio station played it nonstop all day, as I recollect. It was all we could talk about for weeks. What fun! Who knew back then that it would turn into a wonderful annual Thanksgiving tradition? Thank you Arlo!
I was one of those kids who listened to WBAI-FM, but from Central Jersey. So much good programing, in those days. Other kids listened to the latest hits, but I was hearing Abbie Hoffman, calling into Steve Post's show. Or a Lesbian Soap Opera. Or shows on a hundred different subjects, or topics. And yes, I think I first heard this song there, too. Listener Sponsored, Left-Wing Commie Radio, in New York. Those were the days... : )
When I was a kid we used to go to my great aunt's house for holidays. She was my grandmother's aunt. She was somewhere between 80 and 150 years old but I was never sure exactly. She was also an amazing cook and could pretty much cook up or bake anything we set our hearts on and she was particularly adept at making holiday meals. We lived in Massachusetts and she in particular lived in Stockbridge Massachusetts. Thanksgiving 1968 I was 8 years old and my cousin Tom was 12 and he says to me, Jack, you got to listen to this song about Aunt Alice this guy made. So he pulls out the record and put it on Aunt Alice's record player, one of those big old ones with a horn. he cranks it up and it starts playing. That was the first time I heard this song.
So sorry to hear the passing of your beloved Father; just remember he lives within you through all those memories. Prayers to you and your loved ones for strength and comfort during this raw time of loss. Sincerely & Respectfully, Pia
I listened to this completely on a drive from L.I.C., N Y to Liberty, NY on Thanksgiving Day 1976, going to visit my girlfriend and her family. The song was played on WNEW-FM 102.7 at 11AM for 30 minutes. This was the most relaxing drive upstate I ever had. Thank You Arlo Gutrie.
My wife introduced me to this tradition 25 yeas ago...she passed away two years ago Christmas...I found myself listening the moment I woke up this morning...
When i got back from deployment all of us who saw action were scheduled for a psych evaluation. Me and a few guys I served with were transported to a medical facility main side to see a shrink. When we got there we found ourselves in line sitting on benches in the hallway with about 30 more Marines from various units. We were all talking and somehow the subject of this song came up. Since we were all short timers anyway and on the way out we started singing it. The staff NCO clerk there told us to shut the fuck up but the doctor had heard us, came out of his office and joined in being an Arlo Guthrie fan himself. Pretty funny.
Last year, with the pandemic keeping my family separated and worried, my sister sent me a Cameo of Arlo Guthrie wishing me and my childhood best friend a Happy Thanksgiving. Watching Arlo play his guitar and saying our names it was a gift for the ages! My friend Teri introduced me to this song and listening to it takes me back to the best years of my teens. Thanks Arlo for giving so many families so many fond memories ❣
My wife and I visited Stockbridge, Mass. about 4 years ago to see the Norman Rockwell Museum (which was fantastic) but then learned that this was the town featured in Alice's Restaurant. So, we stopped in at Alice's Restaurant and then headed over to the church. It was a beautiful sunny fall day and we had the best time enjoying the time warp of almost 50 years since we first heard Arlo's great song. To this day I use the Group W bench in talking with other people in a self-deprecating way to signify the supposed rejects that aren't allowed to sit at the "Adult Table" in life. Sadly, very few people these days remember or have ever heard of this great song and the horrible misguided war that so many Americans and Vietnamese were killed and/or traumatized in. I salute the soldiers who did their duty but despise our leaders who got us into and kept us in that war.
I went thru Stockbridge, MA several times as a kid & young adult. And for some odd reason it never occurred to me that it was connected to this song. Next I ride the motorcycle unto visit my family friend in VT. I'm gonna have to make a side trip there.
So what exactly was the name of the restaurant? As Arlo said, Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant. That's just the name of the song. And that's why he calls the song Alice's Restaurant.
I play this song every thanksgiving in honor of my dad. Tomorrow will be ten years since he died. He played Alice’s Restaurant every year. After my mom died and he had to learn how to cook he played this on a loop while he cooked. It used to annoy me because I was a kid but after he passed some thanksgivings fell on his death anniversary. I used to be sad and listen to it alone but now that I have a family I play it every thanksgiving while I cook for my family and as we eat. I’m passing the tradition onto my children one day
started the tradition 15yrs ago with my best friend my uncle. listen to it twice every Thanksgiving. Rest easy uncle Eric hope you were listening with me.
It has been a tradition for the last 49 years. Everyone gets to our house at noon( our local radio station has been playing it every year at noon)to listen to Alice and sing along. We now have friends that come as well!!
I was going to ask if you lived in Dallas/Ft worth since 92.5 kzps does it at that exact time every year and has for as long as I can remember. Nice to see so many other stations and cities do the same thing. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
My dad would always put this on on our way to my aunts house every thanksgiving. And I always got excited when we would stop at the rest stop and run into my grandparents and I would ride the rest of the way with them just to get away from having to hear this yet again. Now that I’m older and my dad is gone, it hits very different. A tradition that will always feel like home and a simpler time.
Although musically it's a real traditional riff (like Pencil Thin Mustache") it's actualy really hard to keep the flow going when playing... some of the turn arounds are really tricky and make one's fingers hurt and to sing all that dialogue while keeping time and of course the five part harmonies and 27 eight by ten...etc. well my hats off to your husband... He must really love you to do the work needed to get it right. Whew! Happy Thanksgiving
I am now 70, my children grew up on this song, driving to grandma house at 12 noon on the belt parkway for 20 years, now I have 5 grandchildren, my kids play this beautiful song every Thanksgiving for them. A family tradition ❤
My uncle introduced us to this song 40 years ago and we've been listening to it every Thanksgiving since then. He passed away two years ago and this is the first time I've listened to it in 2 years and what comfort I have in it. We're lucky in Ohio to have some radio stations that play it every Thanksgiving. It wouldn't be the same without this song.
I'm in Massachusetts and I also have a radio station that plays this song four times a day.. 8am, 12 noon, 4pm & 8pm. I listen to it fondly now in remembrance of a good friend who passed away from a fast moving cancer in Oct. 2021. About 12 or 13 years ago, I drove with him to visit the original site of Alice's Restaurant in Stockbridge, MA. It took almost 3 hrs. to get there, but I'm now so thankful and grateful for the memories of that day and the time we spent together. Thanksgiving Blessings to you and your family!
In an era of neat little 3 minute radio hits, it's hard to believe an 18 minute epic was Arlo's must talked about song. Just goes to show that talent will always supercede convenience.
When I was 16 in 1967, I went on a day trip to the Atlantic City shore with my high school girlfriends. There was a high school marching band contest on the boardwalk that day and we met some boys in the band. We took a ferris wheel ride with them and believe it or not the ferris wheel got stuck when we were right at the top. We were stuck quite a while and one of our band companions recited the entire Alice's Restaurant for us. Can you imagine even knowing the words at that time? What an amazing experience. Once in a lifetime.
Ahhhh A wonderful moment in time. I can feel the excitement in the air. The endless potential and freedom of youth. These priceless memories always make our heart smile. Cheers to boys in the band, stuck ferris wheels,, and Alice's Restaurant!
I'm a 51 year old Canadian. I haven't listened to this whole song for a while so I put on the headphones, leaned back, closed my eyes and let it play. It was a wonderful time. Thank you Arlo.
If you're old enough to have been around when this was new and lived with what was going on then, it's hard to not get emotional about all the time that's passed.
whoa, yeah... The tears form as I sit listening and harkening back to those times. If only there were a similar groundswell to end war and stuff, today - Singin' loud - hey, they might even think it's a movement !
"Fitting" that Alice Brock died just a week shy of when the song that made her famous is played across the Nation. Happy Thanksgiving and R.I.P. Alice!!!
My dad listened to this song every thanksgiving at noon as far back in my lifetime as I can remember. After my dad passed, my mom, brother and myself make sure we always listen to it on thanksgiving. RIP daddy. We miss you.
Being from this generation it may be hard to explain to those who were not the dread of the draft hanging over your head and winding up in some swamp in Vietnam fighting people you had nothing against. This song represents the time and thinking of an entire generation of now aging hippies.PEACE
Mike Edison My oldest brother went to Nam and came home in one piece but never was the same again. Now all those lessons on the hopelessness of endless war have been lost.
+Mike Edison I'm gettin' old too...63 now...and YES. I drew 252 in the lottery in my time...never took a deferment... still letting my FREAK FLAG fly! Peace to you as well, brother.
+Mike Edison I don't remember my draft number (I was probably too stoned at the time) but I do remember the good times we had when listening to Arlo with a bag of pot we all chipped in $20 for an Oh Zee.
+Mike Edison My dad knew it was just a matter of time before he got drafted so he cut out the middle man and enlisted in the Navy. He got through the era in one piece- save for a smoking habit that he eventually kicked.
Well, here we all are again. I can't help but feel connected to all the people of the world who need this song in their life on Thanksgiving❤ I better get to cookin😊
Me at the beginning of this song: What the heck? This song is eighteen minutes long!? Me at the end of this song: YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT AT ALICE’S RESTAURANT
Been listening to this song every Thanksgiving for the last 40 years. The kids used to look at us like we were crazy, but at 15 and 18, they ask when it's time to play!! Happy Thanksgiving!
I've gotten my 76 year old mother into listening to this song 5 years ago, (it was her kids and brother who introduced me to this song when I was at least 9 years old ( I'm 50 now)! STILL one of my favorite songs!!!!!
Every Thanksgiving on the ride to my Grandparents house, my Dad would throw a copied cassette tape of Alice’s Restaurant on. We found out that the ride to Grandmas was exactly as long as this song, driveway to driveway. We would laugh and the drive flew by. Great times. This song means so much to me as it was a big part of my childhood growing up in the 80’s. Thank you for putting this up. It makes me smile ear to ear.
I was on a trip in my new car and got hit by a reindeer. I love it! My grandson wanted to take out the dent but I told him I couldn’t because I’m a gramma that got run over by a reindeer!
This has been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family since it came out. Now, 55 years later, I've lost my mom the day before Thanksgiving 2007, just lost my dad, and the lady I love lost her dad the day before yesterday. Thanks for posting this, we needed it in our home today. Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Remember them all, every one matters.
High school teacher here - I play this song all day long for the week leading to Thanksgiving. Kids start by hating it, but end up loving it! Constantly getting reminders this week from former students making sure I'm still playing it! My local radio station growing up (rural CT) played it every hour on Thanksgiving - my own Thanksgiving tradition.
I play this song every Thanksgiving...Reminds me of my family,,,our traditions,,,and our discussions at the family table....I have played this every year since I first heard it in 1967 and will continue to I pass on...Thank you ..for putting a HUGE SMILE on my face...
Today is the 15 year anniversary of RIP dad. I'm going through all the songs he used to wake me up full stereo blast to at 7am every single morning he was home from off the road. And Alice's Restaurant. 35 years later tonight I listened to this REALLY for first time after being despised by it for decades. Now I know why he liked it so much. Rest in Peace Larry.
This song is as Thanksgiving as turkey and pumpkin/sweet potato pie. I think that the Belchers would disagree though. They wrote their own Thanksgiving song.
You know, I'm 24 years old. My dad was born in 1958. I thank him every day for showing me this song as a kid so that I can listen to it now and get so much nostalgic laughter. I don't know a single person that knows about Alice's Restaurant, and I cannot tell a lie, that's horrible.
+Kevin Beattie - don't beat yourself up for it kid...just a different era, nothing more...play the song for your friends, it's as relevant now as it was then
+Kevin Beattie i am french and the same old your father and it was difficult ti listen arlo but now some young guitarist french plays arlo and life go one
Kevin Beattie I have been listening to this song since I was born, I am now 15...I thank my grandpa all the time for showing me this song. I used to ask him every time we got in the car to play it and when he didn’t I would get sad, so he would find a way to play it. My grandparents used to live 5 minutes away from me. So you could just imagine how close I was to them, than they sadly moved to Alaska 2 years ago which was really hard on me, but I get through it because I had two things to keep close to me. For my grandma: I have this stuffed frog that she gave me when I was a baby. And for my grandpa: I have Alice’s restaurant, and when ever I get sad I cuddle the frog and listen to this song. It means so much to me!
I have listened to this every year growing up. Raised my kids listening to it as we drove to their Grandparents house for Thanksgiving. Now my grandchildren are being raised with this tradition.
My dad passed this last spring. Didnt know last year would be the last HappyThanksgiving I'd ever wish to him personally. This was a tradition he and my mom started. Played it twice and this is the third. Love you Dad thanks for the traditions and best memories
I'm from london England dont know about thanksgiving but I've loved this song since I first heard it about 1980 like a fine wine it gets better with age
My mom and I have been listening to this ever since 1967 when it came out on Thanksgiving day no matter where we were we always made time to sit down and have a laugh and sing together. This is my first thanksgiving without her she passed away at 96 yrs old but I still will remain listening to this song every year and will continue ,its good memories happy Thanksgiving mom RIP
Arrived in Vietnam February’68 and after about a month found myself in a tent with a bunch of guys who were listening to music and someone asked me if I had heard this record, I had not and was met with much derisive laughter. So of course they played it for me after which it became a staple for late night in the bunker music parties. It defines our generation as much as Woodstock and The Beatles. When I got home I saw the movie, brilliant. Unlike most here it’s not part of my holiday tradition but it remains a cultural icon.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Congrats for making it through another year, and we all know that it's just not Thanksgiving without Arlo singing us part of our history to remind us that many of us have been Arlo fans since 1970...thanks mom Arlo and Alice a few tears shed in the nostalgia and the memory of were we all where ( 1974 and I'm in the 1/2 double, mom's making us listen to this, but it's okay, we can pretty much do the monologue word for word. And sitting here a "few" years later, well it's Thanksgiving tomorrow,it's official, arlo's song has been played, god keep us all safe until next year when we will play alice's restaurant once again in harmony ( 4 or 2 is up to you and family) .
It's as necessary as watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It's just such Americana. Charles Schultz really put a lot in for parents and for the little kids.
This was a yearly tradition. My husband especially loved to play it after Thanksgiving dinner. He's gone now and we all still love and miss him. In memory of him I make sure to play this on Thanksgiving. Also his birthday is on Saturday. How he loved it when his birthday would fall on this day. I'm hoping all had a great day today in spite of the hard times we're all facing these days. They won't last forever. Keep hope in your hearts. We will not be defeated. Lastly please stay safe... 🦃🕯🎶🇺🇸☮🇺🇸🎶🕯🦃
I grew up in W. Stockbridge, MA. The "Hippie Church" was a landmark in our area. Alice's Restaurant was in an alley in downtown Stockbridge. I have to listen to this every Thanksgiving. If you watch the movie, there's a scene where they load into the red Micro Bus and head to "The quarry". That quarry was literally in my backyard.
@@streetsoflaredo3432 I recall the church back then. It was an uneasy mix of hippies and bikers. I never ate at Alice's in downtown Stockbridge but did eat at Alice"s at Avelock. I think it was called. We lived in South Egremont.
Happy Thanksgiving, Bill, to you and yours.
Kid, Happy Thanksgiving
I love that this song spans generations. I, too, have listened to this tune every Thanksgiving for a few decades.
It doesn't get any better than this.
My Dad suffers from dementia, and I put a guitar in his hands, hoping for something to spur a memory. This is the first thing he started playing.
I have - and will - always love this song. ❤
Amazing
That is amazing! Thank you for sharing that! Alzheimer's and dementia has affected many people I love and my heart goes out to you.
Amazing
When we first learned to play this, it was "Chesterfields these days, they're so hard to find."
It's all about memories
I made my kids listen to this every year on Thanksgiving, for about 45 years. They groaned and rolled their eyes. But every year, on Thanksgiving, they make their kids listen to it.
My uncle made me listen to it and drink a beer at noon every Thanksgiving no matter where we were and I thank him everyday for it
My mother-in-law used to play it super loud every year. My husband & I divorced this year, but I’m going to start my own tradition of playing it.
@@Honery12 😂😂👍
My grandpa made me listen to this
Happy Thanksgiving
@@futuremartilloyou too :)
My mom's name was Alice, she died August 22nd of this year; we would listen to this song every Thanksgiving since I was just a kid. I'm in my room listening to it, for her.
You need to call them brothers and go "You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant....excepting Alice"....and then "walk out'!:)
Life is too short for funk and nonsense.:( It is too bad some siblings of ours are like that.
❤️❤️❤️ Happy Thanksgiving!!
One of my oldest, tattered cover but I love it to this day. PEACE
Well I'm a year older and always loved this "golden " song from '67. Might have something to do with the protests at the time !! Love yah all !!

had fun trying to explane the draft to my grandkids after playing this ....
53 years later and here I am still listening to Alice's restaurant, wouldn't be Thanksgiving without this song. Happy Thanksgiving. It would be nice if everyone could have a happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving from Cajun Country. Listen to this every Thanksgiving. My kids think I am crazy. But they listen!
Just listened to as tradition!
Sure do miss Mamaw and the way all of the family used to get together
Same here... Every Thanksgiving
Yup! Me too!!🥰

Many don't realize the reason that this song became a Thanksgiving tradition.
It was played on a lot of rock/folk radio stations on thanksgiving day. The DJs picked this song because it was so long, and it gave them time to eat whatever plate of food someone brought them, before they had to change the record.
I live in CT and years ago one of the local radio stations played this song for hours
Certainly was considerate of Arlo to create this song for all the DJs Lol.
WDVE in Pittsburgh always plays this at 12 on Thanksgiving Day every year
WBCN in Boston played it every Thanksgiving. Arlo's voice is just captivating. And his humor! We are dying laughing here. Happy Thanksgiving all.
Nothing to do with the song being set at Thanksgiving?
That is so cool!
That sounds like a tall tale to me. It's TOO folksy. You were probably just in Sebastian, were aware Arlo lived there and then fabricated this interaction. I'm not saying it didn't happen definitively, but it sounds a bit like hogwash. 🤷
@jessegilbert9568 You accuse someone of making up a story then with no evidence made one up yourself. 😂 Are you always a killer of joy?
I believe you because my brother met Arlo back in the day, too. He said Guthrie was very friendly and kind. One afternoon my brother saw a tour bus in the back of a local venue. He drove to the back of the venue, where Arlo's gear was being unloaded, and asked if they needed a hand. My brother helped the roadies and met Arlo. Guthrie was grateful for the extra help and let my brother watch the show from backstage. No bodyguards, security guards, stalkers, or paparazzi. The good old days.
@julesmartin6091
Wow.
Happy thanksgiving to everyone missing their families ❤️
yep!
So true. I'm listening with ya though!
Feel the same
Well said!!! 🙏🏻🇺🇸

I've just checked husband's vinyl collection his 70's copy is still there , half a century and more later, we have nothing to play it on , but it's still treasured.
Sounds like you need to buy a turntable and break out some of that vinyl!
I still have my original 70's album too. A treasure.
You mean you can't afford a cheap turntable😊
Nice! We've kept our turntable too thanks to my hubby.
Fuck yeah. It’s weird but great

WBAI! My mom was mad at dad’s extravagance when he insisted on paying extra for an FM radio in the car so he could listen to it. 😊

WOW VERY COOL, DUDE YOU GET COOL POINTS
Oooh -the Group W bench! That's where parts of me have been sitting for far too many years!
Changing that immediately!
I went thru Stockbridge, MA several times as a kid & young adult. And for some odd reason it never occurred to me that it was connected to this song.
Next I ride the motorcycle unto visit my family friend in VT. I'm gonna have to make a side trip there.
Ooooh, that sounds like a bucket list item.
So what exactly was the name of the restaurant? As Arlo said, Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant. That's just the name of the song. And that's why he calls the song Alice's Restaurant.
My Dad played this every Thanksgiving growing up as a kid. Brings back memories ❤😂😢

And I always got excited when we would stop at the rest stop and run into my grandparents and I would ride the rest of the way with them just to get away from having to hear this yet again. Whew!

Fantastic memory!!!!
I thought you were gonna say that you married him !
Got the headphones 🎧 on
I did the same thing and it was very disturbing
If you're old enough to have been around when this was new and lived with what was going on then, it's hard to not get emotional about all the time that's passed.
roy skuderin right? And our life and times now.
whoa, yeah... The tears form as I sit listening and harkening back to those times. If only there were a similar groundswell to end war and stuff, today - Singin' loud - hey, they might even think it's a movement !
yup
roy skuderin I was a baby then!
Barely old enough, I was around nine years old, lived on a tiny street in Pasadena, and four boys from our little neighborhood were killed in Vietnam.
Oh this music is awesome from the vocal to the voice i love it so much, so pretty, Are you a lover of good music like i do......?
This is absolutely timeless. Warms the heart. "Implements of destruction" gets me every time.
"I mean, I'm sitting here, I meannnn, I'm sittin here on the group W bench... " LOL
I am from the 2000s and I love this song... Reminds me of my dad...
I can't help but feel connected to all the people of the world who need this song in their life on Thanksgiving❤
I better get to cookin😊
Me at the beginning of this song: What the heck? This song is eighteen minutes long!?
Me at the end of this song: YOU CAN GET ANYTHING YOU WANT AT ALICE’S RESTAURANT
Exceptin' Alice
And sometimes Alice
Something I'd like to listen to on my way out.

The song transforms you
Been listening to this song every Thanksgiving for the last 40 years. The kids used to look at us like we were crazy, but at 15 and 18, they ask when it's time to play!! Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh yes you have trained them well!
I've gotten my 76 year old mother into listening to this song 5 years ago, (it was her kids and brother who introduced me to this song when I was at least 9 years old ( I'm 50 now)! STILL one of my favorite songs!!!!!
Oh this music is awesome from the vocal to the voice i love it so much, so pretty, Are you a lover of good music like i do......?
Every Thanksgiving on the ride to my Grandparents house, my Dad would throw a copied cassette tape of Alice’s Restaurant on. We found out that the ride to Grandmas was exactly as long as this song, driveway to driveway. We would laugh and the drive flew by. Great times.
This song means so much to me as it was a big part of my childhood growing up in the 80’s. Thank you for putting this up. It makes me smile ear to ear.
It's not Turkey day with ot alice its song bout alice peace to all
Plot twist: the next month, grandma got run over by a reindeer
I was on a trip in my new car and got hit by a reindeer. I love it! My grandson wanted to take out the dent but I told him I couldn’t because I’m a gramma that got run over by a reindeer!
This has been a Thanksgiving tradition in my family since it came out. Now, 55 years later, I've lost my mom the day before Thanksgiving 2007, just lost my dad, and the lady I love lost her dad the day before yesterday. Thanks for posting this, we needed it in our home today. Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Remember them all, every one matters.
((HUGS))
Much love.
Here we go again thanksgiving 2018!
Dave F going to pick up my mother in law and got my listen in
We will definitely sing it before we feast.
Here we are again close to Thanksgiving 2019 and this song is an ongoing tradition Happy Thanksgiving 2019
Thanks giving - give me something and I'll thank you - what's up with you lot?
This is certainly the only thanksgiving song!
this-coming Thursday, Gobble, Gobble 2019!!
This song is as Thanksgiving as turkey and pumpkin/sweet potato pie.
I think that the Belchers would disagree though. They wrote their own Thanksgiving song.
I'm listening now. Thanksgiving tradition!
I love how Alice's Restaurant transcends all divisions in this country It is truly an American tradition. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
I'm from Japan and I listen to it every year on Thanksgiving too even though it's not really celebrated here.
def
Well, there is a divide between those who think that the “Other F word” should be censored and those who don’t.
Oh this music is awesome from the vocal to the voice i love it so much, so pretty, Are you a lover of good music like i do......?
Dad was born in 1951 I'm soon to be 36 play on my bro an play it loud ❤
@@madisonstrong1449 Hang in there man. What a great thing to have for feeling close to your G-Pa.
My late husband and my family listened to this every Thanksgiving. We're still listening 🎶 😢
I have listened to this every year growing up. Raised my kids listening to it as we drove to their Grandparents house for Thanksgiving. Now my grandchildren are being raised with this tradition.
Perfection
Oh this music is awesome from the vocal to the voice i love it so much, so pretty, Are you a lover of good music like i do......?
My dad passed this last spring. Didnt know last year would be the last HappyThanksgiving I'd ever wish to him personally. This was a tradition he and my mom started. Played it twice and this is the third. Love you Dad thanks for the traditions and best memories
Arlo just came to my hometown theater Patchogue New York and did this show ....he didn't miss a beat it was the best time ever
Forgot about this made me cry
I seen Arlo in Bellingham around 1977-78 with a friend.
WWU...I was there too.
Patchogue! I know it well. I hail from Commack and also Yaphank!
Every couple of years I still get the mood to listen to it. It still makes me laugh like a teenager. -2023
Several generations of my family have never missed playing this masterpiece on thanksgiving. Traditions rule, bless ya'll.
One of the best things ever written 🍁🤘 Happy Thanksgiving, all!
@Dean Maker I think we got the point 2 weeks ago
Happy Thanksgiving a year later 😀
Great tune no doubt
I'm all but from that, Era. Can share more if ever?...
Cool, wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Arlo. Happy Thanksgiving
There is something to say about traditional. 😊
Bless you....
Gotta love how less than half the song is actually about Alice and her restaurant. A true Thanksgiving classic!
My father introduced this to me as a kid. Now it's a tradition in my house every Thanksgiving! I love it!
This is part of my cooking traditions. Thanksgiving is not right without it !!🎶🎶🍷🍷😁🦃🦃
WHAT A GREAT DAD, LOVE FOR LIFE, COOL
Same!
My dad did the same when i was a kid !! Lol I remember we used to find it on the radio lmao idk if they play it anymore
It comes on NPR every Thanksgiving
The dislikers are fans of Officer Obie and the draft.
Yeah, who dislikes this song? Weirdos. Happy thanksgiving!
Aww, Officer Obie turned out to have a pretty good sense of humor about the whole thing.

LOL, proudly served Marine Corps veterans!!! Kill Kill Kill!!! I still don’t like the cops
Please share another memory this year.... whatever comes to mind John
Can't believe this song is 55 years old. Love listening to this especially on Thanksgiving.
This song and the WKRP turkey drop must be played every Thanksgiving. It is canon.
Oh the humanity!! 🦃
Oh! WKRP in Cincinnati!
Who knew turkeys couldn't fly?
Absolutely! I just watched the WKRP episode before I started listening to this. That is probably THE funniest episode of that show.
William Burroughs Thanksgiving Prayer too.
Agreed love Arlo
Wouldn’t be thanksgiving without this song
True
❤ I was a volunteer shuttle bus driver for 6 years at St. MARY hospital and I would play this in the bus every Thanksgiving. Still always play it.
Every time I hear it, it's like hearing it for the first time again.
Yeah, it’s like a whitely strieber spoken word novel on tryptophan.
It's as necessary as watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It's just such Americana. Charles Schultz really put a lot in for parents and for the little kids.
That is what makes it a great song
60 years old and once again after 52 years I'm still listening to this Happy Thanksgiving everybody
Still listening, since 1970. Only way to have Thanksgiving
Only been listening since the 90’s. But listen every Thanksgiving.
Abso-fucking-lutely!
Likewise. A great Thanksgiving tradition!
Yes sir
Oh absolutely 100% agreed was raised on this 🤘🤘😎😎🎶🎶🎶
Our local classic rock station plays this song every Thanksgiving. The older I get the more I like it
This was a yearly tradition.

🦃🌲👍The Beautiful Berkshires! 😎
So cool.
Did you eat at Alice's?
What movie
@@streetsoflaredo3432 I recall the church back then. It was an uneasy mix of hippies and bikers. I never ate at Alice's in downtown Stockbridge but did eat at Alice"s at Avelock. I think it was called. We lived in South Egremont.
I've made this a Thanksgiving tradition for 30+ years. I listen to it at least 3 times in a row as i'm making the stuffing, fixing the bird, etc.!
Please don't regret to your wife as the bird
😁👍🇺🇸 Then allow me to say Happy Thanksgiving to you for as long as we live my friend!
Hope to hear from you this year Bill!
I first heard this 50 years ago and it never gets old. GG from 2023.
