    I've found that in houses where people use a lot of hand lotions, the oils in them can act as a slow solvent for oil based paints.
    A clear lacquer coat (car body lacquer) can prevent this.

    The same happened to our stair rail and newel Post. The previous owners did a quick paint of lots of surfaces with a water based paint (semi gloss) over gloss with no prep at all. We have so much work ahead of us to strip and prep the whole staircase/railings for a long lasting repaint. They’ve done it to windowsills and some of the door too. 😭😭😭

      Same problem I'm having. It is so bad I am pulling yards of paint off only to reveal perfect wood underneath. Wth. To be honest it is making my job of getting the paint off easy but I'm pissed as hell at the amount of painting I have to do now because people are too lazy to do the correct prep. Grrr

It’s peeling and looks awful now so I went to start from the beginning. What advice would you give I like the gloss look but I also love the white normal paint look if that makes sense. Any advice? The people who lived in my house before me they did the banister I like a dark brown paint or varnish or what ever the hell it is then someone else moved in and painted over it white then I moved in and give it a sand saw it was brown and just primed it and then put mid sheen satin wood paint it’s chips and flakes so much the hand banister get super mucky as well don’t no what the hell to do with it x

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  3 года назад

      Not easy... you will have to strip the handrail and any other parts which are chipped.. oil primer thinned of a little so it penertrates into the wood for a good foundation.. then oil top coats will be the best hard wearing paint. Thanks

    I won’t use oil based paint now. Yellows too quick. I’m not sure if dulux have fixed the quick yellowing problem yet. But at least water based gloss won’t turn yellow. It’s a compromise I guess.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  5 лет назад

      Water based is ok for darker rooms with not much natural light. Make sure it's 100% water based not a hybrid which will yellow. Oil satinwood is what I like to use.

  • @andrewbell637

    Will be yellow in a months time, great stuff OB but think WB is the way forward nowadays.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  7 лет назад +4

      WB is ok in places but you will not get the same shine and flat finish.
      And it can yellow but on that job the doors have been painted for over 2 years lasting very well. Dark rooms with not much natural light it yellows fast. Also oil based had problems few years back went yellow so fast was really bad. The problem has now been sorted it' not as bad.

      Painting and Decorating looks like you need a fresh tin of gloss or you've got bits in your brush. I use lot of zinsser bin brilliant product. I've tried loads of water based gloss none of them anywhere near as good as oil based gloss.

    • @PaintingandDecorating
      @PaintingandDecorating  7 лет назад +2

      Paint was clean had just strained but its not easy to stop bits. You may get hairs from the brush. Water based is good has lots of benefits.

      +Andrew Bell Have to agree. Recently been using dulux trade WB satinwood. Had a lot of trouble with it at first, but a 5L tin needed using on site. A touch of floetrol and a good, well sanded undercoat gives a very nice finish reminiscent of OB. WB has come a long way and I hope it'll only improve.
