- In this video we take you on a tour of the gardens in front of our home and along the east side. We have some exciting changes coming to these beds that we touch on and at the end we begin to brainstorm a pretty major expansion of our garden. We would love your thoughts and ideas!
I love what you fellas have done to your front yard. It is a true work of art!!! I think you need to add a huge window box underneath the front window to balance out the space above your hydrangeas. It would be a fantastic place to showcase colorful seasonal annuals. The color of the flower box would be pretty in the same color as your home's trimming. It also would balance the flowering pots in front of your garage. Happy Gardening guys!!!
We considered a window box for awhile but last fall added more big hydrangeas so it wouldn’t be visible

Love how you pollard willow. With under plantings makes the area have more depth.
Like idea of hydrangea room and shade seating area. Would think about adding plants that would give more structure all year round - from road side especially- so when fall, winter and early spring (which is 3/4 of the year, unfortunately) you still have that room structure. Boxwood or Nordic Holly “wall” that faces toward road and with fence gives you your structure. Perhaps a few evergreen plants, a droopy or unique small conifer and a few other smaller ones scattered in with hydrangeas.
If you want to blow the budget a water feature and a couple of comfy outdoor longe chairs would make a great spot to hang out during those hot dog days of summer.

We love a specimen evergreen so the idea of a unique plant is a definite. We have a blue point juniper to go over there which will help get us started.

I have a small home, really its a tiny home but there is no reason it cannot be beautiful. Im inspired and planning and planting little garden rooms. Love, love, love your channel. I love how you pruned the dappled willow you bought for $5.00, very artistic and perfect for the underplanted shade area. Ok...my opinion for your hydrangea room, all I can say is go for it, I love little vinettes that you can name. I would place a little fountain just for some soft noise. Morning cup of coffee to start your gardening day in your hydrangea room..perfect! Love, love your garden😊

Love your new garden ideas! Of coarse more hydrangeas! I sympathize with you on the deer problems. I get a large supply of Irish Spring bar soap (Costco) & in a pinch I use a metal grater & grate the soap onto the base & around the plant until I spray with deer spray. Another idea, I add a few drops to my sprayer of Ghost Pepper Scorpion Habanero (Amazon) oil concentrate! Just don't spray on a windy day day, lol, I learned the hard way, but it works!!! Good luck, love watching you guys!!!

If you train your climbing roses more horizontally you will get many more blooms instead of 'second story' blooms. Love your gardens!!!
We are starting the process of wrapping the longest canes around the trellis as they grow. The canes are all brand new and tiny so training hasn’t been necessary
I don't know if you have already done the new border, but I am looking through your older videos and came across this one. A lovely combo for the new border would be Black Stockings Joe Pie Weed in the back, by the fence, with whichever hydrangeas you plant in front of the Joe Weed. It seems some vertical interest is needed if you plan such a long swath against the fence, so perhaps you can also work in a couple of Purple Pillar Rose of Sharon in the border as well? Love following you two. Your garden gets more lovely with each new planting. 🌷🌱🌺🌿

The royal frost birch is such a cool structure, looks great there! And I love that it may resist Japanese Beetles as we are currently battling them!
Some of our other trees got hit hard but this one stayed pretty clean!
@@growformegardening that's good to know! Ours here are currently attacking our standard rose the hardest 😪 working everyday to get rid of them though!
@@TrowelandError I hate to admit it....but sometimes it's worth using a systemic. Ideally we avoid chemicals but these buggers are tough!
@@growformegardening We are about there in our struggle. I've tried all the "first line defense" things, but trying to give it just a little longer before we drench them! Might be time though!!
What you did to the willow they call that lolly popping. Trimming off all the lower branches. I haven’t tried that on a willow yet but after seeing yours. I love it ❤ so I am going to do the same.
It takes some work because it sends out lots of shoots but it looks great

You guys are the best! Hydrangea room idea with bistro area sounds wonderful. Hydrangeas are my favorite shrub, so anything that includes them, I’m all for it. Garden show? We were thinking about that actually. I think it will be a lot of fun.
I just pulled out some Weigela that wasn't doing well from my front foundation bed and replaced it with Double Play Blue Kazoo spirea. It doesn't seem as popular as some of the new varieties but yours looks fantastic. I hope mine will look like that next year.
It’s just a lovely multicolor blanket in the landscape.
A hedge of hydrangea sounds awesome. I have one also. At year three they gave off a wonderful smell at their peak in June and july. I got mine in pint containers so it took 3seasons/years for mine to fully mature.
Its so wonderful to watch them grow from babies...but I don't know if we will be able to be patient enough!!
@@growformegardening lol I don’t blame you. They were the first plants I bought after I moved into this current home being new to gardening and all, but if I was to do it again I would have gotten them at a much more advanced stage.

Watching on RUclips is so different from stories because I have a million things to say and keep forgetting by the time you reach the end! I’ll have to rewatch. I love the variegated hydrangea though. It’s so unique. Maybe you had a late frost that zapped the buds? And I vote a big yes to the hydrangea hedge and seating area!

Every year I hard prune my smokebush back like they do to crepe myrtles. That way I don’t get the ‘smoke’ which I don’t care for, and the size is controlled. Keep up the good work I’m enjoying your vids and you.
I'm really with you there on the "smoke". I prefer the foliage, especially on the golden varieties.

Spilled wine wigelia is a low grower, try a taller one or a dwarf nine bark that gets only about three feet tall.
We have a spot in mind that will be perfect for them!
How about an evergreen hedge arborvitae’s from the birch to the fence that would give you more privacy and then you can plant whatever you want down the fence
That is definitely an option. We may try mixing some evergreens too

Do you follow Danielle from Northlawn Flower Farm? She has a tremendous hydrangea room with great variety, and a lovely stone rug area with a bench and her grandmother's lamb's ears. Might be good inspo if you don't already watch her videos!

Okay, here's my two cents regarding the hydrangea room: I know you will pick hydrangeas that will give you the look you want. I have found that a lot of areas are ruined by the use of the wrong stone (paving), the wrong furniture, etc. Take your time selecting the base or elements surrounding the hydrangeas. Don't be tempted to have a goofy, wavy edge to your paved area. Make it straight and clean. The plants will soften everything.
I think I've said this before: Look to Mr. Maple (especially their 10 @ 10:00 which airs at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time every Tuesday so you can order at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time when the site opens for business. Note: A maple featured on 10 @ 10:00 will not show on the website until 10:00. Then it suddenly appears. Nearly all of the other maples will show on the website, even those that are out of stock. Don't forget: A lot of Japanese maples will do well in a large pot.

Great idea! We have some spruce but only one pine.
Beautiful garden. Tri-color beech has a tendency to revert to solid or bi-color when first planted. Tricolor will return 3rd or 4th year, be patient it will pay off!

This time of year it could be lots of things. We see some fungus on the leaves when it gets humid and hot.
Tri color beech get 30’ tall 20-25’ wide, maybe to close to the house

A hydrangea room sounds fantastic. Would the seat face the new planting or the opposite side. Considering the best view would matter. Also, an inscription on the seat/bench would add meaning.
That's a great idea! I think it would be nice to have something more personal for the seating.

Two! The bigger one is right behind the Tricolor Beach and the other is tucked in by the terrace.
Love the hydrangeas everywhere! Such variety adds interest. Really love your idea about expanding that other bed and adding a bench or seating. What about tucking in a fountain over there too?

I love your gardens....Just wondering how you protect your hydrangea from deer in the summer......
Believe it or not we only have one variety of hydrangea that the deer go after.....quickfire! We have 91 total hydrangeas and they only nip eat from the front of the four quickfires. At this point it is kind of funny how oddly shaped they are. In a year or two they will be big enough to bury the damage.
In my garden they love Bobos,,,,I sprayed them every week with repellent and it didn't help at all....Thank you for letting me know
Beautiful gardens. Everything is so lush. I have just discovered your channel and love it! I am just beginning to develop some hydrangea beds, and planted my first shrubs last summer. Three are growing nicely, no blooms yet, but I am impatient. One poor hydrangea is really struggling after being attacked by earwigs and slugs. It’s just barely surviving. Should I pull it out and plant new, or do you think it will recover?
Hydrangeas are tough!! Give it a winter to recoup and see how it does. We have actually had some mite damage on our limelights so I know the pain!
Your Firelight Tidbit Hydrangeas are do much bigger than mine. I can’t wait for mine to look like yours. On your tree, those were probably gypsy moths. They are terrible. They killed my ornamental plum tree. How tall of hydrangeas do you want for your Hydrangea Room? What a beautiful addition to your garden!

@@heathersmichigangarden that is definitely a front runner. There's also the potential for adding sublime in there...or mixing a panicle with a big leaf. Quick Fire Fab is really a knockout and blooms early enough to hang out with an invincibelle
Your David Austin roses look great! I also live in a Zone 5 B but in NH. Japanese beetles have hit our roses hard this year. What do you do to manage them? I pick them off and toss them into a glass of soapy water twice a day but even that does not seem to be often enough.
Knocking on everything....we haven't been hit too bad this year. One of our neighbors two houses away put up the traps which could be helping. I started immediately when I saw one doing a weekly spray of captain jacks deadbug brew mixed with some horticultural oil (I read that it helps it stick and last about a week). We also do something a little controversial, which is systemic. There are granular and liquid versions, but they save the roses from the early sawfly larvae, and help a lot with japanese beetles.
