I love this scene. It's clear Mikasa is trying to keep her emotions under control, but it's clear throughout her speech that she was heavily affected by Eren's 'death.' I also love how Jean reacted :)
I agree Gabrielle Harris this is a great scene and really tells a lot about Mikasa as a character and her way of handling her emotions. She's really good at being a big sister to Eren and Aramin and always has the right things to say to them when they are conflicted and in need of advice but when it comes to her own emotions she's not as clear thinking and level headed. She handles her emotions very different than all the other characters on the show... She's subdued but when her cup runs over like that scene when she saw what the female titan did to Eren, she can explode and destroy anything in her path. When she has a clear end goal, saving Eren, saving Aramin she tends to handle her emotions better, in this scene she had an idea but I don't think she saw past killing the Titans on the way to the base... she just needed to kill something, she wasn't thinking about her gas, her life, nothing. Studious Boy she knows that making a big fuss about it like armin won’t contribute anything to the situation so she kept the sadness to herself and acted strong to try and cheer the rest up, which is what happened. Also, even though she has that kind of emotion towards eren, at that time he was more of a family member to her than her boyfriend, and it’s perfectly fine for her to be sad that her only family left died. Unlike other animes, AOT shows realistic emotions that a normal person would show, main character or not.
And yet they all were in awe and followed after her, so they must’ve been inspired. Plus I think she was trying extremely hard to stay strong and not give in to despair. Great scene

Lets say we have a team with 10 members. Mikasa is one-man army, Jean is the second strongest and is very skilled at fighting. Connie and potato girl are the guys who help Jean and Mikasa but are nothing compared to them. And we have 1 good guy who well... do what is expected from him (Marco) and the other 5 are just uselesses who follow the strong teammates...
0:45 I really didn't pay attention at it when I watched this moment for the first time but there is a heartbreaking double sense in this sentence. When she says " Even if I'm alone" she wasn't talking about the others not fighting with her, I felt like she was talking about how alone she she must fight once again because her only family left portayed as Eren died.
I really love Mikasa. She's such a great character. She's so strong, yet when she's thought Eren was death, you actually see how human she is. She's weak and scared like everybody else. When she's with Eren she's strong because she trust him, she admires him. He literally saved her and he told her to be strong, to live. I also love how this situation is reversed in Amrin's case. He thinks he's weak and he doesn't understand why Eren and Mikasa keep "protecting" him. The truth is they both see so much more is Armin. They care about him, they respect him and they both admire him. You can clearly see that after Amrin's sacrifice. This is why friendship is so important. This is why we all need friends, true friends. This is why I FUCKING love this anime. As Cassandra clare said "Our hearts, they need a mirror, Tessa. We see our better selves in the eyes of those who love us. And there is a beauty that brevity alone provides.”

And that was so like her to do that. she's always showing up at the right time. The tension when they were training and the drill instructor was abusing Connie she pulled out the potato. Then on the wall when everyone was about to take their positions, she pulled out the meat... She showed up at the right time when Samuel fell off the wall, she ran down the side of that sh*t and saved him and this scene as you pointed out... Her reaction totally lightened the moment. Everyone had this bewildered look on their faces like "did Mikasa just dis all of us?" Then Sasha dissed them too and followed Mikasa which made them snap out of it like "oh hell nah, Sasha too? Ok we gonna show them" then they all charged!!! Great catch on your part. I love Sasha!!! She is my second favorite character behind Mikasa. I hope she has a bigger role season 2.

Saga I like that too. I guess what I mean is that (at least from what I see) there's much more variety to Levi's character (clean freak, his strange obedience to authority, especially Erwin, sympathizing/empathizing with Eren's frustrations, how sensitive he is to pointless deaths, etc), that and the fact that Levi isn't one of the protagonists helps.

I take a different insight to this speech, since Eren was their "hope" and he died (since he kept yapping about how he would down every Titan people felt good to have someone brave). But when he 'died' I feel like Mikasa took on that role, the role Eren would of taken on (had he been there) - the role of giving hope to the people. That's why when she states that she is strong, very strong. I don't think she's talking about herself, I think it's her talking about Eren, how people saw him - since she was taking on his role. I mean, read all those lines she says: you can relate them all to Eren somewhat and how she called them all "spineless cowards" - that's how Eren saw people, especially the military police ;)
Wow, deeper than i realized, i thought she was just drowning out her own pain the way Armin said but theres more to it than that, i think i was more surprised because Mikasa almost never talks and when she gave her first speech, it was insulting everyone and pretty much saying, "I don't need cowards by my side" when all their friends were dying.

I love the way Mikasa leads. There is zero fat in her speech. She doesn't try to lift anyone's spirits by pretending the situation is better than what it is, she doesn't give a long charismatic speech, she simply shows certainty in her abilities. Simultaneously shaming them but also reminding them that they're trained soldiers who are supposed to be better than cowering on a rooftop too afraid to do anything else.
She was irresponsible, and she admitted that, in trost after eren Fake death, she insulted other soldiers, because she wanted to go on a suicidal charge, and the reason she wanted to do that was because she wanted to die. The only reason everyone else got inspired was because they thought she had a plan to survive and win, and mistook her being suicidal for being brave.When she stopped wanting to die it was because she realized she wouldn't even be able to remember Eren if she died, and she didn't want that to happen. She overused gas,and get clapped by abnormal titian, She Nearly Allowed Herself To Be Killed, Consumed By Grief When She Thought Eren Was Dead
I was actually prepare to have her as the main character. She was so much interesting than Eren and has so much potential for growth. With Eren gone she would have need to found another reason to keep on living like Levi.

I actually think Armin is badass in this scene, everyone is either in fear or blinding following Mikasa, but he can still analyze Mikasa's action calmly. That's really a true tactician.
Armin isn't really a leader type of person and can't make people follow him like Erwin could, but he is good at coming up with plans and very intelligent, while Jean is good at commanding people and is respected by the others and when it comes to more formal stuff and overall tough decisions there's also Hanji, so they make up for Erwin together, no one can replace him individually.
How weird it is I come back to S1 to heal from S4. When i first watched it it seemed so traumatic. Rewatching it now after S4 you still get to see character smile and have funny moments. S4 they all just lose their smile and light in the eyes
Haters: Isayama changed the original ending. The editors wanted to downplay the role of Historia and persuaded Isayama to sideline Historia. Eren was supposed to go back to Paradis, abandoned everyone, and reunited with his blonde wife. Meanwhile Isayama: "Mikasa is the first character I created for AOT. She is meant to be the centerpiece of AOT. The story starts with Ern/Mikasa and will end with Eren/ Mikasa" - Isayama Hajime, 2014.
He changed the ending, but that was in 2015, the original ending was for Eren to kill his friends and live a shitty life afterwards, now the ending was kind of the opposite of that.

That's the ending established when he submitted his work to Kodansha because the publisher only accepted the work when its ending was drafted some how. Later, when the editor reviewed Isayama's ending (EMA running towards the tree) they shared their ideas and Isayama quickly changed it.
I have to say as much as I love wit studio, they dropped the ball when it came to mikasas character. They cut out so much dialogue from the manga which shows she’s not eren obsessed like they did in the anime.
I'll never forgive wit for that! Yes their animation was top notch but the version they created of mikasa is the reason so many people misinterpret her character and it's just sad! She's so much more than that!

This show has the most perfect soundtrack I've ever heard. The lyrics at 2:32 fit the scene perfectly. "You can't hide yourself, you can't run / We're fighting for our lives / And we just cannot lose again / There's not much time / Be ready to fight / Do it."
I keep coming back here. You ever hear those stories when a piece of fiction inspired someone so much that their world changed forever? Yeah, Mikasa is one of those characters for me. I have been a fan of anime since I was a kid, and the lack of emotionally strong female characters had an impact on me. I was always one of those girls who needed to put up some drama to get attention or act frail so someone could protect me. But deep inside I always hated that part of me, but its something that I always saw the women around me do. When I started AoT and found Mikasa, at first I almost hated her because I shipped her so hard with Eren, but she wouldn't ever put herself in a situation of vulnerability where he could swoop in to save her, or comfort her, or protect her. In fact, she would be the one doing all of that for him. Even if that meant he hated her...because he couldn't establish that dominance on her, that men are so used to. Eventually, I came to respect her character. She is so strong, smart and still has a kind heart. She uses all her strength to protect those she loves. You may think she is cold or not good at expressing herself, but thats a lie. At the end of season 2, her confession of gratefulness to Eren was so clear-cut and straightforward. When she is worried, she lets Eren know by asking "Eren, are you okay?" , "Eren, if you go to Garrison, I will go with you. If you go to the military, I will follow you there." She is straightforward and confident with her words. So I am convinced that Mikasa has great emotional skills. So its not by a lack of ability, but by CHOICE, that she doesn't express her weakness...she doesn't cry and put up a drama in situations where she easily could (example when Eren asked her "why did you lose weight when we had plenty to eat" when it was clear why she had been stressed out or "I will get you a new muffler" when clearly that particular muffler meant everything to her. But she chooses to stay silent. She may look like her whole world is Eren, but even when eren has supposedly died in this episode, she still stays strong and doesn't abandon her will to live. She only cries when she finds out Eren is still alive. She inspires me so much and I have changed a lot because of this amazing character. I have become stronger, I am more mature and controlled with my emotions, I love harder, I live fearlessly and I don't hesitate in lending my strength to guys or girls who need me. I almost feel like a hero with this new change in me, and I love it xD
Jesus, I watch it again and I just realize how much chemistry between Jean and Mikasa in this scene. Mikasa plan to go and die alone (with Eren) but Jean lead convince his friends to help Mikasa fighting titan. Even though they can't help her much but it does show how much Jean care for Mikasa.
That shot of Mikasa holding her sword up high among her team is the first thing that pops in my mind whenever I think about Mikasa’s strength as a soldier.
She reiterates how strong she is because everyone is afraid of facing titans. She will do most of the fighting as long so as all the weaklings follow her they should be fine. Not the most inspiring thing to hear that you're weak, but if you're that afraid to face a titan it would be more logical to make a run for it with one of humanities toughest soldiers leading you than be a sitting duck
the way she just looks at armin and told him ‘there’s no time to be sad’ after he told her that eren sacrificed you can literally see the pain in her eyes that she’s keeping. this girl had went through a lot.

Armin lost his family, Mikasa lost her family, Eren lost his family, even Annie Berth and Reiner still had their families even though they were the only foreigners. Our strong trio had nothing else but each other to help support each other. A bunch of young teens. They became more than friends.

And that was so like her to do that. she's always showing up at the right time. The tension when they were training and the drill instructor was abusing Connie she pulled out the potato. Then on the wall when everyone was about to take their positions, she pulled out the meat... She showed up at the right time when Samuel fell off the wall, she ran down the side of that sh*t and saved him and this scene as you pointed out... Her reaction totally lightened the moment. Everyone had this bewildered look on their faces like "did Mikasa just dis all of us?" Then Sasha dissed them too and followed Mikasa which made them snap out of it like "oh hell nah, Sasha too? Ok we gonna show them" then they all charged!!! Great catch on your part. I love Sasha!!! She is my second favorite character behind Mikasa. I hope she has a bigger role season 2.

I guess what I mean is that (at least from what I see) there's much more variety to Levi's character (clean freak, his strange obedience to authority, especially Erwin, sympathizing/empathizing with Eren's frustrations, how sensitive he is to pointless deaths, etc), that and the fact that Levi isn't one of the protagonists helps.

I take a different insight to this speech, since Eren was their "hope" and he died (since he kept yapping about how he would down every Titan people felt good to have someone brave). But when he 'died' I feel like Mikasa took on that role, the role Eren would of taken on (had he been there) - the role of giving hope to the people. That's why when she states that she is strong, very strong. I don't think she's talking about herself, I think it's her talking about Eren, how people saw him - since she was taking on his role. I mean, read all those lines she says: you can relate them all to Eren somewhat and how she called them all "spineless cowards" - that's how Eren saw people, especially the military police ;)

I love the way Mikasa leads. There is zero fat in her speech. She doesn't try to lift anyone's spirits by pretending the situation is better than what it is, she doesn't give a long charismatic speech, she simply shows certainty in her abilities. Simultaneously shaming them but also reminding them that they're trained soldiers who are supposed to be better than cowering on a rooftop too afraid to do anything else.
She was irresponsible, and she admitted that, in trost after eren Fake death, she insulted other soldiers, because she wanted to go on a suicidal charge, and the reason she wanted to do that was because she wanted to die. The only reason everyone else got inspired was because they thought she had a plan to survive and win, and mistook her being suicidal for being brave.When she stopped wanting to die it was because she realized she wouldn't even be able to remember Eren if she died, and she didn't want that to happen. Armin isn't really a leader type of person and can't make people follow him like Erwin could, but he is good at coming up with plans and very intelligent, while Jean is good at commanding people and is respected by the others and when it comes to more formal stuff and overall tough decisions there's also Hanji, so they make up for Erwin together, no one can replace him individually.

How weird it is I come back to S1 to heal from S4. When i first watched it it seemed so traumatic. Rewatching it now after S4 you still get to see character smile and have funny moments. S4 they all just lose their smile and light in the eyes

That's the ending established when he submitted his work to Kodansha because the publisher only accepted the work when its ending was drafted some how. Later, when the editor reviewed Isayama's ending (EMA running towards the tree) they shared their ideas and Isayama quickly changed it.

I have to say as much as I love wit studio, they dropped the ball when it came to mikasas character. They cut out so much dialogue from the manga which shows she’s not eren obsessed like they did in the anime.
I'll never forgive wit for that! Yes their animation was top notch but the version they created of mikasa is the reason so many people misinterpret her character and it's just sad! She's so much more than that!

I keep coming back here. You ever hear those stories when a piece of fiction inspired someone so much that their world changed forever? Yeah, Mikasa is one of those characters for me. I have been a fan of anime since I was a kid, and the lack of emotionally strong female characters had an impact on me. I was always one of those girls who needed to put up some drama to get attention or act frail so someone could protect me. But deep inside I always hated that part of me, but its something that I always saw the women around me do. When I started AoT and found Mikasa, at first I almost hated her because I shipped her so hard with Eren, but she wouldn't ever put herself in a situation of vulnerability where he could swoop in to save her, or comfort her, or protect her. In fact, she would be the one doing all of that for him. Even if that meant he hated her...because he couldn't establish that dominance on her, that men are so used to. Eventually, I came to respect her character. She is so strong, smart and still has a kind heart. She uses all her strength to protect those she loves. You may think she is cold or not good at expressing herself, but thats a lie. At the end of season 2, her confession of gratefulness to Eren was so clear-cut and straightforward. When she is worried, she lets Eren know by asking "Eren, are you okay?" , "Eren, if you go to Garrison, I will go with you. If you go to the military, I will follow you there." She is straightforward and confident with her words. So I am convinced that Mikasa has great emotional skills. So its not by a lack of ability, but by CHOICE, that she doesn't express her weakness...she doesn't cry and put up a drama in situations where she easily could (example when Eren asked her "why did you lose weight when we had plenty to eat" when it was clear why she had been stressed out or "I will get you a new muffler" when clearly that particular muffler meant everything to her. But she chooses to stay silent. She may look like her whole world is Eren, but even when eren has supposedly died in this episode, she still stays strong and doesn't abandon her will to live. She only cries when she finds out Eren is still alive.
She inspires me so much and I have changed a lot because of this amazing character. I have become stronger, I am more mature and controlled with my emotions, I love harder, I live fearlessly and I don't hesitate in lending my strength to guys or girls who need me.
I almost feel like a hero with this new change in me, and I love it xD

Jesus, I watch it again and I just realize how much chemistry between Jean and Mikasa in this scene. Mikasa plan to go and die alone (with Eren) but Jean lead convince his friends to help Mikasa fighting titan. Even though they can't help her much but it does show how much Jean care for Mikasa.

She reiterates how strong she is because everyone is afraid of facing titans. She will do most of the fighting as long so as all the weaklings follow her they should be fine. Not the most inspiring thing to hear that you're weak, but if you're that afraid to face a titan it would be more logical to make a run for it with one of humanities toughest soldiers leading you than be a sitting duck
the way she just looks at armin and told him ‘there’s no time to be sad’ after he told her that eren sacrificed you can literally see the pain in her eyes that she’s keeping. this girl had went through a lot.
