Shapo is getting better and better with his gradually maturing game and developing consistency. It needs patience to make his big hitting tennis also consistent and tactical enough. And he is almost there already. This was a great match.
not sure, like i really like shapo's game and i think he's the most naturally talented nextgen player, but his decision making is simply terrible at this point, it'll take a bit longer for him to break through especially with his big hitting high risk game, i dont see him becoming a legit top 10 contender until his mid to late 20s like wawrinka and dimitrov
Imagine Shap with a more powerful, more accurate serve. An even more powerful forehand, and more power on his backhand slices, which today are a little weak. He will have more aces, more service winners, more outright winners with his forehand, and be even better with his pure Eastern power backhand. I see him top ten within the next two years, then top five in three years, #1 in 2023 or 24.
My favourite match of the tourney. So great to see Shapo back on his game at the end of this season. The coach change seems to have been good for him. Props to Monfils for pulling this one off, what a great competitor.
I think Monfils could’ve gotten a slam or two in his career if he had a more aggressive play style. IMO he relies too much on his athleticism and defense, which leads to him playing too passive. He has the ability to his big shots but doesn’t use them as much as you would think. This leading to him having long, drawn out matches that hurt in stamina in tournament runs.
Hope your sphincter has healed by now! Very tactical assessment and accurate. One just wonders why does his coach not guide him into that aggression and turn him into the winner he can be!!
Dead on! He needs to shorten points....Question is - with all his years of experience and improvements in his game, what does Gael want from Tennis? Maybe, just maybe he's exactly where he wants to be :-) . -Jam1Ja.
kinda disagree with this. He's had matches where he's attempted to be aggressive and hit those bombs all match long but he can't do it constantly. He's kind of limited to having these random 4-8 game outbursts each match where he crushes everything and being passive the rest of the time.
Once Shapovalov‘ s game fully matures the rest of the tour better watch out. He has some of the most explosives shots in tennis today. He’s probably going to take longer to reach his potential than some of the other next gen guys but once he does I fully expect him to win grand slams.
It's his mind that needs most work. He reminds me very much of other flashy players of the past like Leconte or Mandlikova on the women's side. Both of them were gross underachievers. I sincerely hope Shapovalov isn't, but a large part of me thinks he will be. He just doesn't want it enough.
This match is so amazing. This mental and athletic commitment from Monfils and Shapovalov was outstanding, like the level of tennis they played. For me it's among the greatest US Open classics (Sampras-Agassi...)
It's so easy to root for Gael. He's so charismatic and energetic. That period of time when he was winning a whole bunch right before the pandemic was magical and everyone was hyped and happy for him. I hope he finds it again now that restrictions are starting to ease off.
I like Denis and his game. He has been struggling this year. I hope he can get it together whenever we get past this Corona crisis....Like his boy Felix A.A. also.
IMO shapo has the most powerful forehand than anyone even federer because his forehand is not only powerful but hard to judge direction wise...if he only settles down mentally, this guy can be next federer...
Shapovalov, future tennis superstar. Big shots. Just need more tactical game plan with those amazing shots. To not tire out. Same could be said of Monfils. Both need to incorporate more tactics to win their grand slam titles.
You have to give it to him. At some point any normal person would stop the entertainment part of his game and dedicate himself to finish and WIN the match. But this is Gael Monfils, and he cannot help himself. and that's the reason, the New York crowd love him so much, and he loves them back. This only happen in our sport !.
I like how Monfils shows respect for future #1 Shapovalov... no trick shots or showboating. I think he likes hitting against the Canadian. Fun match to watch - a true slug fest.
4:02 I don't get this point, why did they included it in the highlight reel? If there was a challenge and the ball was in, then I would understand, but this really makes no sense. It's a break point, yes, but they broke each other enough times to have this point in..
don't you wish at times the announcer could have kept his mouth shut? Does he have to mention everything that happens as if thie were a radio broadcast. Shapo's game is maturing. He needs to learn how to win. That's it.
Shapo at times looking like a left handed Warwrinka with that backhand . Like stan , he is offensive player who goes for his shots. Needs to get mentally tougher and more consistent. He is a shot maker. Which makes him fun to watch. Monfils a great shot maker. , so athletic. Like many of the French , underachiever.
Monfils is the freaking goat, poor Shapovalov couldn't get anything past his long legs. Who the heck could Monfils possibly lose to? It looks like he's finally ready to go on a Grand Slam winning streak.
Watching is more enjoyable when the commentators have some emotional restraint. The "Oooo that's genius", "Oooooo that's amazing" stuff gets irritating when it comes 3 times a minute.
It's about time that MONFILS forgets about the 'FRENCH HAKA' as it really works against him and puts him down much deeper when dealing with his losses!!!!!

Totally agreed. Next year might be his next break through into top 10..

Monfils hits are pretty flat with an eastern fh, is easier to hit harder on average with more topspin, like thiem

Finally a video that shows how fast the game feels when you are on court.
On TV, Tennis often looks much more slow than it really is.
What an incredible match!!! Can't believe Shapo didn't pull it out, but koudos to Monfils for his fighting spirit in this one.
Gael is spectacular
It's so easy to root for Gael. He's so charismatic and energetic. That period of time when he was winning a whole bunch right before the pandemic was magical and everyone was hyped and happy for him. I hope he finds it again now that restrictions are starting to ease off.
Wow that's a lot of highlights! Nice one-hander for Shapo and great speed from Monfils!
How entertaining are these two?
Unreal.
Best of the best of the best match in 2021 and Monfils is pretty cool 😎👍👍👍
Best tennis match I have ever watched. Both intelligent and creative players on their A game! Wow!
I watched this live. These cats were off the chain. Great stuff.
One of the best pure athletic matches
That was a crazy-great match. Both player played brilliantly.
This was a super match between two excellent players
shapovalov's forehand is breathtaking
You mean backhand ?
So Happy for him! He deserves to start Winning Again! Go Monfils!!!!! Awesome!
I was at this match. Best tennis match I have ever seen.
Wow! Amazing match! Just spectacular. Can’t wait to see Monfils win his first grand slam title!
....Como não gostar do MONFILS e seu carisma...
Monfils is one of the best player.
I like him all the better for funny character.
Gael is a "ham" who prefers entertaining more than winning.
That's his problem. He needs to take his game more seriously and stop clowning around
Shapo is awesome. Big shot maker. Shame he didn't make it further
Shapovalov blew it he served for a two sets to love lead. He is young but sad Denis lost.
This is what tennis is all about and all the highlights are supposed to be.
Wow! Awesome match by these incredible athletes however. Monfis is very experienced would love to see him win a gram slam yaaa
One of the most interesting matches ever.
A win against Shapo, who is one of the best players nowadays, is not a small victory. Congrats to both.
A lot of great matchs this year in the USO!
Shapovalov's backhand is really strong!!

I was fascinated by Monfils who was laughing at the opponent's net-in. How about everyone?
Shapo has one of the best backhands ! I like it slightly better than Wawrinka’s . 12:32 is a prime example …. a jumping power Backhand!!
I love both player.
Both players are very powerful Denis is younger so my view he is one of the best player in the future
how come every Shapovalov game started with 15-40?

Shapo has the best 1 hand backhand!

Great. I wish Monfils final against Djokovic.

Why does Shapovalov's racquet almost look glossy? IIRC, the paint job of the VCORE 95 is matte.

I know that, but they at least have it painted to look like the newest model. Looks like they screwed up on the paint job lol
