- Here is my long term review of the HED. carbon and aluminum fat bike wheels review, in both 26" and 27.5" sizes. I got to test a 26" version of the Big Deal carbon wheels, and a second set of the 27.5" Big Half Deal AL wheels for over 6 months, with a full range of tire sizes. When I purchased my Borealis Flume, I also opted it with 27.5 Big hand Deal AL wheels from HED. as well, so I have had continued experience with these wheels.

I appreciate the honesty in your videos Tommy. You give the facts, and your experience, and don't sugar coat anything. Thanks for that. I appreciate ya. Best fat bike content on RUclips. Take care.
Much appreciated and thanks so much for watching!
I run the aluminum half deals on my Borealis Telluride. I used some 80mm tape when I installed my latest set of tires after having similar pressure loss issues. The tape completely solved my air loss. I haven't had any measurable air loss in the 3 weeks since install.
Awesome, thanks for the feedback!!
You do your homework and deliver all the goods ! Love your power packed content. It’s such a pleasure to watch and listen to your reviews! ❤
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Nice review. Looks like HED has the aluminum wheelsets on sale now for $880. Then for grins went to Surly and they have the ICT and Wednesday 30% off.
Yep, pretty much all bike brands and outlets are doing big sales right now, so now is the time to pick up something if you were thinking about doing so!!
I'd love to see a snowy uphill segment with two different wheelsets to see if there is a measurable impact on performance once they are rolling. There has been more research suggesting that wheel mass isn't such a big deal (pun intended) once they have momentum built up as they are slower to slow down meaning you retain more energy. Obviously for braking and accelerating these are going to making a difference but I'm curious about climbing.
I can confirm when on longer or steeper climbs is the one area that lighter wheels and less rotational weight is drastically noticeable, because you are constantly having to work to maintain speed. It is definitely true that once on flatter or even more undulating terrain, the momentum of heavier wheels can give some assistance via momentum, but personally I would go lower weight every time because it always feels better to me, and even in non climbing scenarios lighters wheels spin up so fast it offsets any benefit to the momentum effect of a heavier wheel IMO. And lighter wheels brake much better too (not having to fight that momentum as much).
Good review! What would recommend for an agressive rider looking to shed rotating weight with carbon wheels? Rocky Mountain suzi q on 27,5 x 4.0 and I often run low pressures…
I definitely wouldn’t recommend these wheels if you are a hard rider. While I can’t make a personal endorsement, it might be worth looking into Nextie wheels or the ICAN wheels. But I can’t speak specifically on their durability or how much they might save over an Aluminium wheelset. Thanks for watching!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks!
Great video. Just picked up crestone and talked to David at borealis about this very topic
Awesome, Crestone is fantastic. And yeah I had much the same conversation with him too when first getting these wheels.
Those head wheels should be repurposed as clock frames, as they sound to be way to fragile in this rocking world of fat tire traversing.
I’ve had no problems yet, you just have to be reasonable with them, and the actual performance when riding is fantastic.
@ElevationEveryWeekend Since rim strikes could be a concern with these HED rims, have you tried tire inserts?
I have not, I think tire pressure is adequate to manage the concern. I’m not aware of tire inserts designed for fat bike wheels, but if there is one it could be a solution.
8PSI?! What are these for, road bikes? 😅
Seriously though I'm 235lb and run at 8 or less for anything more interesting than fire roads. (26x4.8")
Yeah, it’s definitely something people need to be aware of if considering these. The AL rims go a little lower and really offer most of the benefits, but still need to be aware of rim strikes! They are awesome from a rolling performance standpoint though.
Good video lots of info you get a thumbs up from me be waiting for your next one
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching!
Any recommendations on ultra light tubes for 27.5 ? Seems a lot of issues with the Revoloop fat (and pricey!!)..almost $150 for a pair in Canada with shipping. Don’t really wanna go tubeless…
Yeah unfortunately I think the options are going to be limited, and $150 for tubes is really steep! I really would consider tubeless if you want the weight loss and overall benefits of it. For the price of those tubes I bet most shops will do the tubeless setup for you.
Go tubeless and never look back!
@@fatbikedad384 @elevationeveryweekend both my local bike shops are 100% set against tubeless for winter fat bikes with tires being swapped. I know I know, but I don’t do the maintenance myself and they just think it’s not worth it and potential burping issues (even though I know I don’t run too low of psi). I did find some “light” fat butyl tubes that might be a decent compromise.
Tubes are stupid. Running sub 4psi and hitting a bump there is so much tube material to pinch between the tire and the rim, and so much more rotating mass with a tube. I run tubeless and I only ever had one issue in the last two years. I broke the bead going around the corner and lost a bunch of pressure, just filled it back up with a co2 and I was good to go.
The minimum inflation numbers are a deal breaker for me.
Yeah it can definitely be a limiting factor for some types of riders.
