Watched this. Ended up buying a lot of stuff… 😂 not the point of the video, but still now my espresso is a million times better! Thank you so much! Your videos are the only ones I’m watching! ❤

I love anything that helps me keep things clean. Definitely the puck screens are worth the cost just for the reduced maintenance.

Great info on the competition baskets. A friend recently told me the same thing after he bought one, he had to grind finer.

As always a great video presentation from the maestro 👏. One of my “must haves” is a loading funnel. They should be supplied with the machine. The amount of coffee I wasted when I first had my Sage Barista Pro. There was no way to prevent the coffee overflowing from the portafilter after grinding. They’re not expensive either 👍

Thank you very much! 😎 Yeah dosing funnels are indispensable, I should have included funnels. Ta, Kev.

I agree the loading funnel is essential but strange that you didn't get one. My Barista Pro came with one.

Great video Kev as per usual! The one "gismo" I bought is a puck screen. Nothing fancy, but precisely as you have said it makes little or no difference to the espresso as far as taste etc is concerned. It does however keep the group shower screen clean and more importantly I get consistently dry pucks! Previously with some roasts, the puck wasn't entirely dry so knocking out was bit of a chore. Caused by channelling?

Cheers 😎. Yeah soggy picks are usually caused by smaller doses, it's not actually a sign of a problem, just what happens when the headspace is increased. A puck screen will reduce the headspace slightly so that would make sense. Cheers, Kev

Kev, I've seem your page grow amazingly well, love the set up and down to earth discussion and advice. can you do an eBay purchase set up for under 200 or something like that? I aeropress, but would like to get into espresso and grinding, but costs seem prohibitive.

Brilliant video Kev. Nice and short and perfect for beginners. I've purchased, and experimented with, all but the shower screen and agreed that none of them make a significant difference to shot quality. You missed a couple that I think improve your work flow. A spray bottle to spray water (RDT method), as it reduces static and makes work flow cleaner. And a funnel so that grinding in to the porter filter is less messy. I switched from a funnel to a blind shaker and the shaker also reduces the mess. Like you said, Lance Hedrik has some great videos on his objective tests on different tools. But beginners should not go crazy with adding these tools in.

Thanks 😎👍 ah yeah I missed RDT. I actually sometimes find the blind shaker ends up even more messy as I'm occasionally a clumsy oaf & I accidentally dislodge the stop before I've placed it on the portafilter, spilling the coffee everywhere 😆.

Hi Kev, I have watched this through and yes it is very informative. When first getting an espresso machine it is so tempting to also go for the gadgets. The one question I have is when tamping down the coffee it is often stated 30lb of pressure is needed. But how do you know what 30lb is without using a tamping gadget that is calibrated?

I have the cyclone and the blind shaker, pictured here. If nothing else, they make for a better-looking puck. 😂

What do you think about the groove on the top of the stop, in the blind shaker? That's the one thing I don't quite get, coffee gets stuck in there, dunno why they've done that.

@@Coffee_Kev It is an odd design choice, but I always rub the nobly bit to remove any coffee prior to shaking, and it stops grounds from getting stuck in the dimple. If that makes sense. Either way, it beats messing around with a cork and needles... I'd rather drink tea! 😂

It's a good point, for years pro baristas never used any of this stuff - and many still don't. Although, there is a difference between home espresso and commercial espresso. If you have a commercial set up with a very good grinder and espresso machine, and decent pro barista chops, slowing down your workflow by adding anything like this probably doesn't make a great deal of sense, you'll probably be creating more than adequate results without any time consuming workflow steps. Ta, Kev.

How true. I was amazed how little tamping pressure I saw. At Tazzo d'Oro in Rome the work flow process seems so fast and unfussy. Having a gigantic grinder the size of a moped would probably help.
