What to pack on a bike tour (longer than 7-10 days) - GEAR LIST

  • This video is meant for all of you with little to no experience about bike touring and packing up for long trip. I am not new to bike touring or packing, as I did my first experience (worth to mention, meaning longer than 7-10 days) in 2012. However, I have missed the right moment to open up my bags and talk about my gear list. Typically a gear list video should be done DURING THE TRIP or immediately after it. I haven't done a similar video during my TransAmerica - coast to coast - tour, but as I am now just back from a trip in Finland, I had finally the opportunity to talk about my gears, as my stuff were still around me.
To your surprise (?), a bike tourer gear list is pretty stable anytime the duration of the trip gets over a week or 10 days. The amount of stuff that you might need for 20 days is similar to a 60 days trip. 1 month or 3 month isn't that different. This is as long as you don't take airplanes and change radically environment, or switch from summer to winter time.
Normally, you and your bicycle should not exceed a total of 150 kg. To play safe, stay within 125 kg. That means that a cyclist of 80 kg, pushing a bike of 15 kg (including all accessories), should not exceed 30 kg of bags. Be also aware that you are going to hate any kg of useless stuff. As you are the engine of your vehicle, make sure you have enough power to push and handle your bike. The lighter you are, the more agile you'll be. It will be easier to carry, pack, look for things, jumping on a boat, a train and taking care of your belongings. You might be as light as 60 kg or weight well over 90, however my recommendation is not to exceed the "total luggage weight" of 20 kg (it is not too little, not at all).
My bags were exactly 20 kg this time, lighter than on my Transamerica tour, and during this video I am going through (almost) all my belongings. It is quite a bit of stuff and I could certainly travel with less. Please note that during the trip (at day 10) I have shipped home some goods for a total weight of nearly 3 kg.
    This is my gear list:
    CLOTHES
4 pair of socks (including 1 merino wool)
    2 T-shirt
3 long sleeve sweaters (1 very light, 1 warm merino wool, 1 lite-warm Columbia sweatshirts)

    3 Jackets (wind, rain, cold)
    1 Columbia hiking trousers
    1 rain pants
    2 shorts (1 for cycling - Gore)
    1 shoe cover (Shimano)
    2 caps (1 water resistant, 1 casual - Scott)
4 underwear of which 1 padded
1 cycling gloves (Hersta), 1 warm running gloves (Decathlon)
1 cycling shoes (northwaves), 1 light walking shoes (good for water and shower too)
    SLEEP & TENT
    Naturehike Cloud Up 2
Sea to Summit sleeping mat, sleeping bag and pillow
    Liner (synthetic) McKenzie
    ELECTRONICS
    DJI mini 2 drone
    ZV-E10 Sony mirrorless Camera
    GoPro 9
    iPhone mini 12
    2 power banks
    1 rear red light (usb)
    1 head lamp (battery)
    Garmin Edge 520 plus
    2 cables for each mount
    2 usb plugs
    MacBook Pro 13" 2015
    SSD ext disk, 1TB
    VARIOUS
    1 Cooking set Primus
1 titanium spork, 1 lighter, 1 fire starter
Dish soap, hand soap, sanitiser, wet tissues, dry tissue, body and clothes wash, clothes line (for camping), earplugs, toothbrush, toothpaste, painkillers, 2 water bottles + 3 LT water bag, a gas canister, a stove, spices, olive oil, bike repairing kit, 1 inner tube, a multitool with allen keys, multitool gripper, grease, lubricant, helmet, bike lock...

Dixie , from Homemade Wanderlust youtube said , she would never ever go on the trip without medicine for food poisoning ( diarrhea and alike ) like imodium . I use Bismol , but there are others very popular. God sent advice !! I was very lucky to follow it. Needed it badly . Would never go anywhere without it as well.
Thank you for great video .

Great point. A small travel medical kit should consider that too! Even water can poison your stomach for a while.

I have a dedicated video for my bike and set up - the American trip was done with 4 bags, full steel bike.

I really enjoyed this. It reaffirms my resolve to bike tour without camping; that is just too much baggage. Do you think it would have been possible to do your TransAmerica tour without camping? Also, I noticed that you don't have a full-frame triangle bag, which I have always found to be an excellent place to store a filled water bladder.

A triangle bag would have been useful. About the camping question, it is also a matter of budget. If you plan it carefully, probably you could manage every night in hotels/motels. But some area is very poor on accommodation.

@@vladywashere What? You mean there are no Mandarin Oriental hotels in Montana? 😜 I have been looking at potential routes through the west and staying in hotels seems easy everywhere except Wyoming. At minimum, I would have to bicycle 120 miles/193 km in one day with no services in Wyoming, which is possible (I have done this distance before in very flat terrain but with lots of services) but extremely difficult. I know this is not the cheapest way to travel, but I would not enjoy having to drag all of that gear up and around mountain passes. I never travel with a budget, but I think spending $100-150 USD per day between hotel/meals/drinks/snacks is realistic in most areas. In highly touristic areas or during holiday weekends, that would become $200-250 USD. When I look back on my journey, I don't want to think about how much I suffered. I want to think about the nature, the landscapes and that indescribable feeling of lightness and freedom that you can only get on a bicycle.

Anyone set a style or a target. But it’s gonna be hard anyway. Hotels help, it is a help in the morning and in the evening. No need to pack or unpack a tent etc.

If you don't want to deal with mosquito's get a Thermacell. They work!

      @vladywashere  Год назад

It was for sale in every shop, that one or similar stuff. We have discussed about it with another cyclist. She told me that the issue is that it kills any insect around. We camped much together and have nothing to avoid mosquitos for real. But I might consider next time.

I enjoyed your videos, both the USA trip and the gear setup. I didn't see mention of a tire pump and do you usually use fenders on your bike? Were you happy with the seat and handlebars?

I forgot the pump! Yes, it is attached to the frame. No, I don’t use fenders.
