  • On the finale episode of The Science of Empathy, Julian explores the effects of "empathy burnout." For people in jobs that require a lot of empathy, it's common for people to feel overburdened by the hardships of other people. So we're here to see if there is a better way to cope with empathy burnout!

    Now I have a word to describe what it felt like feeling alone in being a teenager yet spending a ton of time as a caregiver for my mom and my differently abled siblings.

    Awww no more empathy....but glad you'll continue the series! :) Burnout is so real and can be very overwhelming. I've seen friends quit social work kinds of positions and teaching positions, but others stick with it for a couple decades. It's definitely hard work but having support and a team helps greatly. Some positions are especially hard when it's more difficult to see progress in a child or group of children. Baby steps...

    I loved this series! I always enjoyed the 'science of'-framework, where each video is super effective at striking a particular point home with the aid of the little tests. For this season, empathy, the subject was a lot more subtle and difficult to crack, but you did a great job. After happiness, love and empathy, I hope there'll be another one! Although I'll admit it's getting tough to think of another subject..

    thats a great series. i enjoyed. although i observed the opposite working as a doctor. i started out my career working out very passionately and empathetically and all my patients were happy. But when i used to sit with other docs, not everyone shared my passion, infact some shared the opposite although they were part of my team. i didnt realise this effect until now and eventually i had changed and became like them too at the end.
    So my point is that am glad i know this now, so i always remain empathetic to my patients but also, its worth noting that the opposite is true also. That if your thrown into a negative apathic environment, you can catch that too working as a team, sadly.
    Please lets not judge here and try to paint all the healthcare workers with one brush. Every human out of 7billion people have their own varying experiences in life.
    Trying to never burn out now :)

    Did.... did they actually talk about how to fight emapthy burnout? Did I miss it? He briefly said something about sharing the burden with others, and doing self care, but that was like 5 seconds of the video...

  • @Aboukay80
    @Aboukay80 6 лет назад +1

    In order to fully be able to show and provide empathy you yourself need to be filled with love, positive vibes and happiness.. only then can you really be able to do so... It's like comparing yourself to a glass of water for example.. only when the the glass is full and over flowing can you be able to give.. if your glass of water is empty then you can't do so... So always remember that you must love yourself first in order to be able to give and show love to others :)

    • @TriciawiththeTRUTH
      @TriciawiththeTRUTH 6 лет назад

      Very true. Although I think we need to force ourselves sometimes to be of service and that way also fill ourselves while filling others :)

    • @Aboukay80
      @Aboukay80 6 лет назад +1

      That also works but you shouldn't really be forcing yourself though.. it should come because you want to do it... What should happen is just giving it a try and seeing how positive it affects you in return.. Being able to empathize with others is a blessing as it develops a special connection that not everyone can understand or go through

    • @TriciawiththeTRUTH
      @TriciawiththeTRUTH 6 лет назад

      Sure, of course. I was speaking about people who are burnt out or even depressed or going through hard times or a trauma. Sometimes people have to push themselves into positive situations, such as service, in order to bring their lives back into some kind of balance. I definitely think it can go both ways, just like the chicken or the egg, either scenario can work. Although what you speak about would be the ideal, people who are burnt out or just don't want to deal with others need to push themselves sometimes.
