Well at the time it was kinda ambiguous. Course now we know he didn’t, at least until they pulled a “now I must go” kinda crap with him in Lightning Returns that I still call BS on.
+Nathan Pringle I was thinking the exact same thing. I KNEW what was coming and gave myself a little pep talk "Okay. You know what happens....don't cry....You don't need to cry." Yeah....That didn't last long. I'm still wiping tears from my face. Damnit Caius!
He literally got what he wanted (mostly, slight monkeys paw), made me go through a grueling fight and then proceeded to just walk it all off. Caius really is a prick.
That moment when you know that sh** is going down... I actually love the ending. It's refreshing to see a game not ending happily. We all know things will be fixed with Lightning Returns, but still.. I also liked very much that the ending is a cliffhanger. Need more of those even in videogames. Makes things more interesting.
simple really. Etro is a Fal'Cie. Etro is the one who intervened and made Vanille and Fang crystal once vanille ran away, and I strongly suspect that the reason snow is a L'Cie again is because he asked Etro for help to save his wife. It is the kind of thing Etro would do. Lightning completed her focus as a L'ie to Etro so Lightning turned to crystal until the time when she is called upon again. If the mythos is cement, it is probably Bhunivelze who awakens Lighnting in Lightning Returns
10:30 This is such a pretty song, but this scene makes me cry. Such a happy song to such a tragic ending all the way around... taking both Serah AND Mog into consideration for meohmy5.
The interesting thing is, regardless of whether or not you choose to kill Caius, what Noel does remains the same: he spares Caius. And then Caius deliberately impales himself on Noel's blade. It's interesting because it feels like Noel has even surpassed the player. I just noticed. The glow in Caius' eye is the same as the Heart of Chaos. Does he have another manifestation of a god in his body? That would explain why he still lives.
Only a guardian can stab him. That is why he tried to get Lightning to do it in the opening. Also, that is why he needed Noel to do it. Only a guardian can do it. Caius and Noel were the last 2 guardians on Earth to protect Etro.
He wanted to protect her, he cared for her as a friend. They both have their own love life, but they cared for each other, they grew close because of how long they had been together, partners, trying to save the world together.
@@lilaheart4224 same but at the same time, i kind of got a more Yeulish feeling with Sarah, more like he had a duty to protect Sarah, much like in his timeline he was meant to protect Yeul
Personally I found it fitting, not during the death, but after, where it abruptly stops and is dead silent while chaos happens. Makes it a total holy crap moment.
I remember when I beat this game, I mourned for over a week about Serah’s death. My brother said I was being ridiculous, but this is the game that made me fall in love with video games. Although everything is righted in the end, it doesn’t change how devastated I was! And then Lightning being in crystal gave me chills…needless to say, I preordered Lightning Returns
Not gonna lie, i miss when games had dark or bad endings- it's uncommon Idk if that's why i love this game so much Sometimes, things go very wrong~ i know that games have good endings to have that sense of acchievement, but i would love to see more game with tragic endings
It's a rarity to see such a dark ending.. And though I welcome it, it's still a royal kick in the face :< It could've taken a turn for the worse some other way, but nooooo!
Ahhh, Valhalla. What an amazing sight to behold. (17:13) Whenever I have a chance to get a glance at the city and Etro's Shrine/Temple(especially Etro's Temple), I felt amazement at the beauty of the Unseem Realm's City and anger that I can't explore it and the city a little. Does anyone else thinks that Valhalla, along with Etro's Temple, is one of the top 5 most unique(to you) and greatly design place/city/structure with a interesting(to you) backstory behind said place?
@MonoChromium One of the Paradox Endings explains it. It's the ending where Noel kills Caius, but he ends up absorbing the Heart of Chaos instead of destroying it.
nope, i'm saying that chaos creates itself from other manifestations of chaos which are mere shadows of its presence, when these other chaoses die, their existence and consciousness feed one true chaos, who then sends fragments of his own power across time and space to eventually become these exact same manifestations, who then send their power back to create the true chaos in a logic loop. kind of like a time paradox, but on a multiuniversal scale.
@AzureDarkGod Yep, I have to say the voice casting was pretty well done in this game. Caius's English voice is really similar to his Japanese voice actor.
anywho, the idea is that all beings linked to chaos in any fashion, including the fabula chaos have this link. but again, it's just me coming up with random stuff, the thought had occurred to me and was nagging so much that i decided to see what you guys thought of it. honestly, it sounds like one of the most epic mindfucks ever.
how many of you were like me that you watched the ending before even playing the game once and didn't care about this ending but when you played the game you ended up crying your asses off i've passed this game about 10 times and i gets me everytime.... i loved serah and the fact that she died had me pissed off so i hope she at least makes a spiritual appearance or something in lightning returns
@ldc62 There's nothing that says we won't get a sequel and everything that says we will. The DLC they plan to add for Lightning and Sazh(with nothing else confirmed thus far) will just explain how they ended up where they are. With Lightning essentially becoming the Goddess, Snow wandering around as a L'Cie, Noel's status as guardian(not to mention existence), and whether or not Serah will reincarnate as Yuel does as a recipient of the Goddess' blessings, there are too many questions to answer.
Oh, I HATED it at first but yes, it was refreshing to see a game, especially a Final Fantasy games, not end happily. I have a feeling it may be the same for the next one.
I think I can explain on how the ending comes together. During the time of when we were seeing Noel's past and he was talking with Caius, Caius explained that if the manifestation of chaos should stop beating in his chest, the Goddess would die and the chaos of Valhalla would be unleashed. But then how did Caius come back? When our Heroes arrive in Valhalla Caius says "Here in Valhalla the Chaos is my ally" and since the chaos can destroy the timeline, he can use it to bring himself back.
So he said the Goddess is dead, but he still looks like he has the powers he had before. His eyes glowed liked Noctis's. Noctis's eyes are supposed to glow because of the goddess Etro's gift. The lore is connected. So how does he still have his powers of the Goddess?
That one minute of Caius being [Ca]pta[i]n Obvio[us] (HEY, YOU CAN EVEN SPELL IT WITH HIS NAME) and then asking Yuel on a date was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth the fucktons of hours spent getting the secret ending. Totally.
i have the sneaking suspicion that caius isn't going to be the focus of the game, they're probably just going to clean up his mess without getting on his bad side again. (We all saw how fucking with caius ballad turns out.)
The Heart of Chaos holds the lifeforce of Etro. That's why the one with the heart is immortal for they hold the power of a goddess. And there is no new Yeul. Etro is the reason she was immortal as well. So, in destroying the Heart of Chaos, he killed the goddess which released Yeul and Caius of her powers and their cursed cycle.
@TheMustik92 what do you mean "she found Mog"... watch the opening scene of FF13-2... ( not the opening part where you wait to activate the opening scene, at the start of game)
I love final fantasy and this one really got me into the history way more than the others dunno why and it really really made me sad see that ending it was like "awww everything is..." "WHATA FUCK!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS SERAH DIED?!" *waits a few more seconds* "NOW THE WORLD GONE TO SHIT?! CMOOON!!!" :(
I don't think Caius is still alive. It's probably just his spirit like when you see Serah in Lightning's Requium (spell check) but then again everyone kept saying that life and death lose all meaning in Valhalla so maybe he never really died in the first place. I dunno
Serah dying sort of reminds me of Aerith's death...not the circumstances...just the suddenness and how much it seems to impact the audience...it's pretty tough not to choke up a bit the first time you see this...
@ffandcinema Probably because he knew the heart of chaos wouldn't get destroyed and instead consume Noel just like it did Caius so he needed to know he had the strength to overcome it?
This ending was predetermined but it wasjust mind blowing. The entire time they said that Serah's life was in danger, then she dies. Caius has Etro's heart, Etro = Goddess = Kill = Gran Pulse turns into Valhalla. What's mysterious is Lightning turning into Crystal/Stone on Etro's throne. Whether or not that was Caius's doing or Etro's. Or that if Lightning became Etro (that's why she's a stone/crystal). FFXIII COME AT ME!
There's just one thing I never understood in this game, and maybe it's because I missed something but... If Caius dying would mean the death of Etro as well, why didn't he just stab his own heart in the first place? He comes back to life in the secret ending anyway. Anybody?
i think Lightning cryalized herself to keep the memory of Serah forever. Serah said don't forget about me so Lightning did that so she'll have an eternal memory of her......
When I saw the new cocoon go up in to the sky I screamed my ass off... I saw a little bit more sarah died I cried... everyrhing went to darkness and saw lightning in crystal.. I stared in awe =0 now I'm thinking... Final Fantasy XIII-3? That would definitley a first.
here's a serious mindfuck for you, what if every single incarnation of chaos in the entire final fantasy series, every last one from every perceivable title, manga, anime and otherwise, ultimately ended up becoming one being after they die? that chaos's entire existence is predetermined by how many versions of himself come into existence across time and space, feeding into one all-powerful manifestation of all of their souls combined? would that be a final fantasy or what?
Lightning didn't make mog, mog got thrown into valhalla and he challenged lightning to a duel, he lost to lightning and in valhalla the rules are that the defeated obey their conqueror
Its awkward for me since I am watching and the video keeps buffering and Serah made it awkwarder since it goes like "I wanna make a new future" then Serah says "Let's do it" and it buffers
Made me cry when Serah had a vision death and Noel shouting Serah ;(
The ending was once spoiled for me, and it's still one of my favorite scenes
Caius sitting on Etro's Throne should be a much more iconic scene than it is. I got chills when I first saw that.
TripThreez I think Lightning sitting on etro's throne is way better it gives me chills every time I think about it that is my opinion
No one's talking about the REAL tragedy here!
R.I.P Mog ;_;
Mog ain't even dead
Well at the time it was kinda ambiguous. Course now we know he didn’t, at least until they pulled a “now I must go” kinda crap with him in Lightning Returns that I still call BS on.
Starting at 16:22, anyone else notice that the clock tolls 13 times?
Wow it's true!!!
Every time I watch this ending I end up crying. I don't know why I keep watching it D:
How can you cry about a video game ?
+Nathan Pringle Me too. This is one of the most depressing games I've ever played.
+Nathan Pringle I was thinking the exact same thing. I KNEW what was coming and gave myself a little pep talk "Okay. You know what happens....don't cry....You don't need to cry."
Yeah....That didn't last long. I'm still wiping tears from my face. Damnit Caius!
don't worry you're not alone😂
Trust me my hubby was laughing cuz took me 2 hours after he got to the ending to stop crying . Ppl just feel more I guess .
Man...The song continues right after noel screams just makes me gag.
16:24 the bell rang 13 times
He already has so much Phoenix Down in his hair that it wouldn't have any effect.
Caius better be ready for the biggest asswhooping of his life in the next game. Lightning is gonna destroy him.
Jennifer Li lol and yes
No she wont do that..
He literally got what he wanted (mostly, slight monkeys paw), made me go through a grueling fight and then proceeded to just walk it all off.
Caius really is a prick.
I also loved the ending very daring and different, it has a whole "empire strikes back" cliffhanger feel, Thanks for posting this Omega

If the mythos is cement, it is probably Bhunivelze who awakens Lighnting in Lightning Returns
So either their new arc is freaking tiny, or that planet is fucking absolutely huge
+Tico2858 there's not that many people. Cocoon had a population of barely 20mil. people. And pulse is large
10:30 This is such a pretty song, but this scene makes me cry. Such a happy song to such a tragic ending all the way around... taking both Serah AND Mog into consideration for meohmy5.
Correct. His name is Liam O'Brien. He's done voice work for numerous games/anime.
no matter how many times i see this it still makes me cry. it was so unfair somehow
watching the cutscenes is like watching Final Fantasy Advent Children :D
The interesting thing is, regardless of whether or not you choose to kill Caius, what Noel does remains the same: he spares Caius. And then Caius deliberately impales himself on Noel's blade. It's interesting because it feels like Noel has even surpassed the player.

the last 13 days!!!! lightning returns!!!!!!
Caius's heart was etros. she gave it to him after she saw how dedicated caius was to yeul.
Whoa this is probably the most complex ending. I'm currently playing this and it's sad that serah has to die. I think Noel liked serah.
***** Noel still has [his] Yeul, Sarah still has Snow. [Offtopic: Always hated the way they spelled Yeul. Ugh.]
He wanted to protect her, he cared for her as a friend. They both have their own love life, but they cared for each other, they grew close because of how long they had been together, partners, trying to save the world together.
There's some good moment 😂
And lead to love
You change the future you change the relationship
I always thought Serah had more chemistry with Noel than she had with Snow
@@lilaheart4224 same but at the same time, i kind of got a more Yeulish feeling with Sarah, more like he had a duty to protect Sarah, much like in his timeline he was meant to protect Yeul
12:47 - 13:35 is equals to the moment when Tidus says good bye to Yuna, Yuna runs straight through him and they "hug" and he jumps off.
Personally I found it fitting, not during the death, but after, where it abruptly stops and is dead silent while chaos happens. Makes it a total holy crap moment.

I hope you’re excited for FFXVI and we get a trilogy for Clive Rosfield and also play as his young brother Joshua!
Your name. No way.
Not gonna lie, i miss when games had dark or bad endings- it's uncommon
Idk if that's why i love this game so much
Sometimes, things go very wrong~ i know that games have good endings to have that sense of acchievement, but i would love to see more game with tragic endings
When the screen faded to black and the final bell tolled followed by the words, "To be continued..."
this had me sitting here, fucking CRYING all over again
Caius is the best mastermind in FF nuff said.
I cryed 2 hours on this ending when hubby played so much emotional
He actually broke the fourth wall - he's mocking the player.
It's a rarity to see such a dark ending.. And though I welcome it, it's still a royal kick in the face :< It could've taken a turn for the worse some other way, but nooooo!
Too be able to do/create things like for so long is miraculous, completely miraculous
Really... what was Caius trying to do in that secret ending?
Is it just me or the background song is so nice!! And the singer of it is from where I live.. PHiLiPPiNES
im also from the philippines me and my brother are strong
its pretty inapproapiate for the ending though
Ahhh, Valhalla. What an amazing sight to behold. (17:13)

@MonoChromium One of the Paradox Endings explains it. It's the ending where Noel kills Caius, but he ends up absorbing the Heart of Chaos instead of destroying it.
I just noticed that in the secret ending Caius sits almost as exactly as Ifrit in FFXV
MOG PLEASE WALE UP! You have to wake up! Come on Mog don't do this!
nope, i'm saying that chaos creates itself from other manifestations of chaos which are mere shadows of its presence, when these other chaoses die, their existence and consciousness feed one true chaos, who then sends fragments of his own power across time and space to eventually become these exact same manifestations, who then send their power back to create the true chaos in a logic loop.

Someday it will happen to me I am dead my sister will cry a lot if I was murdered she won’t move on without me
I cry like a baby only for mogu 😭😭😭😭💔💔

my jaw dropped this was so unexpected then it said To Be Continued.. i was like oh yes im ready

Makes you wonder what kind of technology would be needed to make a gaint floating orb like that.
"To be continued..." There will be a sequel ? A Final Fantasy XIII 3 ? *-*
I think I can explain on how the ending comes together.

Ninetales Commander that's actually true since the many yeul are the chaos .
Charice slayed the theme song, it really suited the ending. God I cant wait for Lightning Returns!
Let's get this straight raiden failed to stop time compression and so hope became raiden.
I just have a feeling that caius ans yeul will somehow be the "new deity"
Keep up these great videos.
Like the 13 hours you get to save the world in Lightning Returns.
So he said the Goddess is dead, but he still looks like he has the powers he had before. His eyes glowed liked Noctis's. Noctis's eyes are supposed to glow because of the goddess Etro's gift. The lore is connected. So how does he still have his powers of the Goddess?
Changing the future may have had consequences, but I couldn't handle seeing Serah die and turning Lighting to crystal. ;__; Damn you, Caius!
Totally.

Maybe the Heart of Chaos prevents suicide. He NEEDS someone else to kill him. Probably a Cannot Self-Terminate type of thing.
Serah dying sort of reminds me of Aerith's death...not the circumstances...just the suddenness and how much it seems to impact the audience...it's pretty tough not to choke up a bit the first time you see this...
God I remember being so pissed at this ending
Is the guy who voices Caius the same as the guy who voiced Kain in Final Fantasy IV DS? They sound reeeally similar.
Okay~ Get it,thanks for the details!
This might be a paradox right...? I doubt it though since they were the only ones besides Caius, Yeul and Lightning that can travel through time.
and serah is the next yeul.
Despite the grim ending, I think that Caius and Yeul would make a much happier world than what was.
This game pulled an Infinity War ending before it was cool
@ffandcinema Probably because he knew the heart of chaos wouldn't get destroyed and instead consume Noel just like it did Caius so he needed to know he had the strength to overcome it?
Oh I can't help but lol at the way Serah collapses. But it makes me cry DX
This ending was predetermined but it wasjust mind blowing. The entire time they said that Serah's life was in danger, then she dies. Caius has Etro's heart, Etro = Goddess = Kill = Gran Pulse turns into Valhalla.

FFXIII COME AT ME!
This ending still makes me scream why did they do that?
There's just one thing I never understood in this game, and maybe it's because I missed something but...
If Caius dying would mean the death of Etro as well, why didn't he just stab his own heart in the first place? He comes back to life in the secret ending anyway.
Anybody?
Serah looks so damn beautiful in this cutscene *___*
Snow's gonna be pissed.
i think Lightning cryalized herself to keep the memory of Serah forever.
Have heroes kill you:
Win the fucking game
here's a serious mindfuck for you, what if every single incarnation of chaos in the entire final fantasy series, every last one from every perceivable title, manga, anime and otherwise, ultimately ended up becoming one being after they die? that chaos's entire existence is predetermined by how many versions of himself come into existence across time and space, feeding into one all-powerful manifestation of all of their souls combined?
would that be a final fantasy or what?
So the chaos destroyed the past but they means there is future, right!
I am jealous omega's not getting creamed by youtube.
can't even post CUTSCENES on my end here in the US T_T
I need to move to Chile...
@TheMustik92 oh The Mog's side quest? No i didnt play Mog's sidequest because i'm focusing first in the story before sidequest :)
:Inoal died too when the choas took over
Lightning didn't make mog, mog got thrown into valhalla and he challenged lightning to a duel, he lost to lightning and in valhalla the rules are that the defeated obey their conqueror
Probably. But I bet it will release after Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Kingdom Hearts 3. Or not. They did that with this one.
Its awkward for me since I am watching and the video keeps buffering and Serah made it awkwarder since it goes like "I wanna make a new future" then Serah says "Let's do it" and it buffers
so i have one question. they said they wanted to make a game where light ends up happy. but this ending doesnt seem to happy for light....im confused.
Square.... you better make it to 18 and when you do..... It better be epic like 6 and 12 endings were.
The heart of chaos, is the heart of the goddess. You cannot phoenix down a goddess. :p
I think she will come back. After all, she completed her focus and was granted eternal life, right?
