- The SFS is the Sandwich-Friend-Score, I polled a few friends and aggregated their opinions on the music. They represent a middlepoint between the perspective of the average person and the perspective of a person within this community.
The NPI is the Normie-Palatability-Index, Which I measured by the popularity of the groups in the public eye. This score represents how likely it is that the average person would enjoy them.
Both of these scores are measured out of a possible 5

Thanks for stopping by, if you liked this or maybe have a friend or group of people you’d like to introduce to this community, consider sharing this video around, it’s one of the best ways to fight the algorithm overlords!
I definetly will share this
can you make a playlist of all the recommendations please?
This is a great vid. This genre of Tally Hall, Lemon Demon, Jack Stauber, Will Wood, and Bo Burnham is so hard to put a name on it.
You forgot cavetown here
Not as well known but Ludo is very much like Tally Hall imo
What about IDKHowButTheyFoundMe?
Fabloo
fə-bloō'
Nah bc I was NOT expecting Bear Ghost to fall on this triangle. Will Wood? Duh, he's the best. Miracle Musical? Obvious, it's Tally Hall 2.0, but the glee that washed over me when you mentioned Bear Ghost was just insane I adore them so much.
Samesies
I love recommending Two Trucks to random people
real
My life peaked when I saw someone got Jerma to play Two Trucks on stream
@@FreshSandwichHey I'm a Jerma fan too! 😀
I started in the Stauber corner _slowly_ transitioned to the Tally corner and dabbled in the lemon demon corner.
I started in the Stauber then went to will and I'm stuck at Tally Hall
i still stucked with tally hall since the start
Stauber, Lemon demon, Will Wood and then Tally Hall
Same!!
I started with jack stauber, then started to get to lemon demon, discovered tally hall and ignored it but then became obsessed with it
will wood, tally hall, and lemon demons are my absolute favorite artists, and i’ve noticed a lot of people who like one of them, like them all. along with the fact a lot of people my age (15) really love these artists. their music is great. tally hall has to be the most near and dear to my heart, though. since they are from my home state as well as the fact i sound them around 2017 before it was super big. it’s a great triangle with a lot of great music.
I am so happy the younger generation are discovering these folks
Hey, I’m also a really big fan of Tally Hall and I’m around your age too, and I thought since you like Tally Hall you might want to check out this cover artist Chonny Jash if you don’t know him already, he does insane parody type covers of Tally Hall and Miracle Musical combined, and has his own sort of Lore too it as well and is definitely worth checking out if you have the time!:)
@@soulovenn i have already listened to his music and made fanart! i do like it a lot
@@SPARKRIZZLE Oh that’s so cool! I’m happy you know about him because his community isn’t too big:)
you found them when you were 9?
The "you're probably gay, autistic or both" trinity
Real
Stauber at the age 13, then Will Wood and Lemon Demon at age 14-15 and Tally Hall at the age of 17.
The other ones I cant remember when It started, just happend :D
eyy i also started with jack stauber
listened to nothing aside from his music for 2 years straight
if you make a sequel to this you NEED to put these artists they're so amazing
-bo burnham
-bill wurtz
-isaac turner (i feel like im the only person who listens to him tho i dont blame you for leaving him out)
-jhariah
-jan misali
-car seat headrest
-mother mother
-100 gecs somewhat
-that handsome devil
-nelward
-glass beach
those are all the artists i would put in this list if i made this
i'd add chonny jash too!
@@syvvieon doesnt he do tally hall covers
@@janajusimi269He has original music too! Quite good ones to be honest, i have no idea how he does what he does, but whatever he's doing i love it.
nelward is SO good, really underrated
@@janajusimi269he also has two original albums and another cover album of various songs, as well as chonny’s charming chaos compendium (his tally hall ‘cover’ album)!!
TMBG basically invited the genre and the protovibes of the internet. They basically invented streaming with Dial a phone in the 90's and were the first band to do a full digital album. Neil and Tally Hall were heavily influenced by TMBG and its so very true that Neil truly invited the culture of the internet.
I wasnt expecting the mechanisms at all, theyre super underrated and god i wish more people listened to them
I adore most of these artists and I enjoy the rest. It’s so interesting how these otherwise unrelated musicians ended up forming an online scene simply through fan overlap (which there is a LOT of)
I wonder if Cosmo Sheldrake would fit into anywhere here...
yesssss he's cool
Dude, that's my favorite singer!
*casually scrolling through the comments seeing artists I’m obsessed with and looking for new artists to obsess over*
what the hell these are all my top artists??? will wood is INCREDIBLE, tally hall & miracle musical have been stuck in my head for months, bear ghost lives in my playlists rent-free, lemon demon has snuck its way on there too, jack stauber as well, cavetown, etc -- this is literally my favorite music ever
I felt identified with most of the recommendations you made, it feels good to know that there is a small part of people who share the same musical tastes and that you enjoy listening to that music.
FINALLY A VIDEO THAT EXPLAINS MY MUSCIAL TASTE
I provide a simple service
@@FreshSandwich It is greatly appreciated
Frfr
2 months ago ive started listening to the mechanisms because of this god forsaken video now ive finished the magnus archives and i am heartbroken why would you do this to me you beautiful person
theres an album i found recently called "the first glass beach album" i think its pretty good and i'd reccommend it no idea if it would be consided "indie" though
glass beach is absolutely a great band
HECK YEA GLASS BEACH!!!
@@androart1817 Yeah WE GLEACHING!!!
really cool of you to shine light on these bands and artists to hopefully make this weird community just a tiny bit bigger. the only people on here i haven’t listened to are the mechanisms and bear ghost, but i’ll be sure to change that really soon! good video!
thank u
Recommending Two Trucks is actually wild
I live life on the edge
I'm a metalhead but I started out listening to indie. I used to listen to almost all of these bands as a kid. I like hearing when people are into old bands I used to obsess over. I was a huge Tally Hall fan.
I was so happy to hear the way you described Jack and his music. He is my fav artist out there and seeing people talk about him with that same admiration and joy i feel is just so great and fullfiling.
Found this on Reddit 3 days ago and found out it was made by you when I saw it on my recommended. I really liked how you dissected the indie music scene pretty well. And lastly I like your suggested songs cuz most of them are my favorite picks too, especially with WIll Wood, Tally Hall, Neil and Jack Stauber. Nice work!
PS. And to think it's been 3 months since I commented on the Two Perfect Strangers vid you made.
listed all my favourite artists and offered even more recommendations, thank you! anyone with this music taste is so cool
The fact that I already listen to all of these 😭😭
Will, for as weird as it sounds, didn't know what a Tallyhall is until after he made In case I make it..., and it only happened because of Williard! using the same chord progression as Introduction to the Snow by sheer coincidence, and when pointed out he mentioned not knowing the band or hawaii part ii
Also, speaking of Joe, he tried reaching to Neil Cicierga for a collab a few years ago.
*neil never answered the emails*
I found a lot of these bands naturally over the course of 8 years, starting with TMBG, it wasn't untill I found Lemon Demon that I realised that all these fans are connected, although I am late to the tally hall thing but I have been listening to miracle musical and Rob Cantor for a while anyway.
I’d also throw Jhariah in here
omfg there was definitely a pattern to the music I've listened to throughout these years and this video shows that. Never felt so called out. I listened to tally hall first too and knew everyone here, would've been even better if u included mother mother.
found myself clicking on this out of a vague sense of curiosity, was pleasantly surprised to find there was only one artist on here who's music I haven't been entirely engrossed in for at least a few years. despite how much time I spend online I've never really had the energy to get particularly engrossed in online communities but it's fun to see how a community has formed around music I love so much :)
I LOVE THE TRINITY! I've noticed that a lot of my friends on the internet are also big fans of Jack Stauber, Tally Hall, and Lemon Demon. I've always been really curious about why they all seem to go together and why fans of one of these bands are usually fans of the other two. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.
I really enjoyed this video, I've noticed over the years that I've listened to mostly the artists listed in this video, I never thought they where connected in some invisible type of music, but I'm glad to know now that they are in this weird, niche, cool way
I've listened to all of these artists except for the mechanisms, I'll definitely check them out!!
I am very surprised to find that only ONE of the bands on this list is one I don’t know (the Mechanisms, who I may go check out (: ). I do occasionally mourn not growing up with “normal” music (due to my family, frightfully, being big country music fans), but I’m glad that it led to me having the music taste I have today (which, in my humble opinion, is eclectic but awesome ✨) Thank you for putting together this neat recommendation piece - more people deserve to be exposed to these great artists
caught this like almost two years later, thank you for the recommendations! ive kind of gone through the pipeline like tally hall -> neil cicierega -> jack stauber -> will wood and im pleased that i can spot quite a few artists that i recognize *and* some i wasn't expecting to be on this list (the mechanisms for one; ive been meaning to look at them because of the magnus archives)
very comprehensive stuff !!! now if i wanna initiate (i mean introduce) people into my music taste, i'll happily direct them to this video! thank you, i hope you've been doing well 💙
the pipeline I went through is very similar to yours, but it was jack stauber and then tall hall. other than that, it's basically the same lol
@@explodingegg123 aye !!! good to know we share a similar pipeline. hope you're doing well in light of the tally hall news.
(also, i think your persona pfp is very based even though im not caught up with the story!)
@@klep6719 ty!. I only recently got into the persona series, but it's my current hyperfixation, so I changed my pfp to it lol
@@explodingegg123 thats based, yeah!!! my pfp also relates to my current hyperfixation (vtubers LOL) so hey you're not alone!!! i hope you're enjoying the persona franchise and the spinoff news
I was surprised that I was intimately familiar with every single artist on the list, and I never realized that there was a community for them all! As someone who’s really disconnected from the music scene outside of the actual songs, this was super helpful to me. Thanks for making this!
I’m sorry I had to jump in the comments so early, but I just had to say I am very surprised to see you recommend “fate of the stars” for the good & evil album. Nothing wrong with the song but I feel like there’s other songs from the album like “&” that show off the vibe better in just one song. Great video over all, I’ll have to check out the artists I didn’t recognize.
Fantastic video, Tally Hall is my favorite band and They Might Be Giants is my mom’s favorite band! (I’ve actually seen them live). Just a fantastic genre overall and I’m glad I have some new bands to listen to that I haven’t heard before!
Thank you for making this video, its very good! Recently I was thinking about this community, and the things that bind it together! You explained it all perfectly.
I didn't know i was part of a community until now??!
I definitely started in Jack Stauber corner, and somewhat parted both sides at the same time. I'm going to definitely listen to this recommendations and dive more in it. Thanks!!!!
I feel so fucking called out rn... legit just like one punch to the face after another.
and all that topped off by putting basically my whole personality into a small little triangle...
Was expecting to find new music, instead I got a definition and genre for all my favorite music lmao
I would just like to say, I personally astounded you made so much sense in a way that I thought never had. Any sort of bearing door will work I know necromancing dancing and I’ve only recently just got into Tally Hall
Man I found your channel yesterday after stumbling on your “two perfect strangers” vid and was totally hooked, but my god is your new content even better! I fell back into my tally hall phase recently and was actually looking for more music of this genre, so this video could not have appeared at a more perfect time :))) your content is amazing, the amount of time and effort you put into these videos is hella appreciated , I’m excited to see what else you’ll create man keep it up!!:)))
Thanks a ton, really appreciate it!
damn, called out a lot of my playlist. the dreadnoughts and idkhow still missing tho
I believe one that is highly underated in the triangle is what (in my opinion) would be the middle of the triangle Red Vox with a more Fabloo style with rock elements while also being heavy on the vocals and synth
I like Tally Hall :)
I also like Tally Hall
@@FreshSandwich *in Rivers Cuomo voice* "HOW COOL IS THAT?!
i know most of these artists, all except bear ghost... here is my list of favourites and other things i like about them... or trivia
tally hall
- cannibal and misery fell (good & evil)
i also like the shia labeouf song which had rob cantor collaborating with multiple choirs and studios in los angeles and more importantly zubin and bora on bass and drums respectively, and ghost is good too
will wood
- i / me / myself and love, me normally (the normal album)
i love this guy so much i listened to every single album he had available on spotify.
lemon demon
- amnesia was her name and modify (view-monster)
you might have heard of these songs before, because youtubers crumb and aimkid have done animations to both songs and aimkid is notorious for using mostly lemon demon songs for their animations with some jack stauber and 100 gecs in the mix as well
the mechanisms
- ulysses dies at dawn
i haven't explored the entire catalog for the mechanisms but if you like greek mythology, this puts a steampunk spin on it, to me the catalog is a refreshing type of steampunk instead of cyberpunk
they might be giants
- stuff is way (nanobots) kiss me, son of god (lincoln)
did you know my mum hates these guys and called tally hall a "less annoying" version of them? yes i have had a grudge ever since! she is going to the nursing home, mostly for other reasons though, i guess.
jack stauber
- benny worm and cupid (micropop) and inchman (inchman / two time)
me and my ex really liked this guy! no clue where they are now but one of their carrds weirded me out. do you think i dodged a bullet? also there's a very silly inchman animation out there that i quite like, it has some ginger guy trying to live in the wilderness and dying in a field! it really fits the song, for some reason.
cavetown
- homesick (moominvalley TWO* official soundtrack)
i don't really like cavetown anymore. did i mention that i'm jewish?
bo en
- pale machine (pale machine)
shocked i didn't recommend my time? me too! where am i? that doesn't matter. kikuo actually did a cover of my time! but it's kind of ugly. i usually like kikuo's music, so this was a shock to me. anyway, that's the end
Hold on, what happened with Cavetown?
@@mothbrainedindividual antisemitic jokes a while back
@@sherlock___holmes Aw man 😞
I know it sounds silly but if you like tally hall and jack stubar you will probably like Louie Zong! Love their music! I'd probably recomend Hello World or Beekeeper
you made me discover the mechanisms and fall in love with them after they released their last album i hate you so much also i am forever greatful
LMAO YOU RECOMENDED TWO TRUCKS FOR ONE OF THE FIRST NEIL SONGS THAT PEOPLE SHOULD LISTEN TO!!!!111!!1!1!1!!!!!
This makes me so happy!!! I know so many of these songs and I'm so glad there are more people getting shown these musical miracles, pun intended
I never realised that all my favourite artists were in the same genre
OH MY GOD CAVETOWN IS ON THIS LIST THIS IS THE ONLY THING IVE EVER SEEN TO HAVE ALL MY FAVORITE MUSIC ARTISTS
( - mother mother)
I cant believe that literally ALL OF MY FAVORITE BANDS ARE HERE??? THE FACT THE MECHS WERE MENTIONED HOLY SHIT, and then right after with TMBG-
Really nice video btw!!!
the fact I listen to Bo Burnham, Tally Hall, Will Wood, Jack Stauber, and mainly Lemon Demon. IT'S LEMON DEMON, YOU CAN'T RESIST THE LEMONADE.
I also dabbled in They Might Be Giants
Bo En also made the soundtrack for the game Pikuniku, it's one of my all time favorite games.
oh my the triangle is just my music taste.. spirit phone, pop food, and marvins
good job on this guide you 100% called me out
more!!
jhariah (tally hall corner)
that handsome devil (between lemon demon and tally hall)
mr bungle (between jack stauber and tally hall)
Ah yes,the "I can't describe my music taste to other people" triangle.
"mmm yes I kinda listen to all genres...but also not"
I was a big fan of these in 2019 and 2020. But now I’ve sorta.. trailed off. I wish I could’ve experienced the boom we’re having now, i only saw the start of it 😊…maybe it’s because i listened to all of the songs and i just couldn’t find anything more captivating or new to experience them for the first time again
Thank you so much for the recommendations. I will check out every one of them. also love your channel. I found out about it thanks to the two perfect strangers video, it was an absolute masterpiece. and this also is.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video! I just started listening to Tally Hall and Miracle Musical a few weeks ago and I'd heard of some of these artists like Lemon Demon, Will Wood, and Jack Stauber from others in the community, but most of these are entirely new to me.
Thanks for all the recommendations!
oh my god, I never thought of bo en as part of this grouping, but, you're completely correct
the fact i know all of these artists is absolutely insane, love this genre so much
Anyway i jumped and Accidently threw my phone when mechs were mentioned. Didnt expect them on this list
New sub, definetly listening to some of this (The ones i don't know), thanks for the recomendations!
Thanks for like doubling my playlist😭😭
Ey no problem
i knew when Out In The Twilight started playing it would be good. my first taste of indie was Lemon Demon. Literally my childhood. Tally Hall caught my interest in 2021 and Jack Stauber in 2017. Good to see people introducing more to indie. Thank you for making this video!
TWO GUYS NAMED JOHN HAD ME REELING-
The entirety of this video was mostly foowed by me going "oh my god will wood!".... "oh my god the mechs!"... "oh my god TMBG!"
Im not really sure what i expected tho, obviously im way less original than i initially thoight, which ultimately wasnt much
Anyways i reccomend
-Jhariah
-Oingo Boingo
-Minimall
-Human Zoo
Great video and a pretty good guide to this nebulous “genre”! Nice to see some of my fave artists highlighted. Gotta mention one of my own favourites - the criminally underrated Bryan Scary, who I’d probably put in the “Tally” corner. I’d recommend starting with Venus Ambassador, Ballroom Kid and Mourning Dove meets the Mayflower (or the Flight of the Knife album if you’ve got the time to go for a whole album).
Cosmo sheldrake is off to the side somewhere
the way I went FERAL when I saw the mechanisms on here
It's so funny to me that for Lemon Demon you recommend Two Trucks
you little trickster
great video! id like to add to any new indie fans that I suggest starting at The Normal Album for Will Wood since I think its a good transition from more mainstream music to indie (and also every song on that album slaps)
I’m glad to have stumbled back onto your channel! (I saw your “Two Perfect Strangers” video when it came out!) And just when I got into WillWood :). Great video, once again
i saw the thumbnail and had a fucking shock cause ive been listening to all 3 and seeing them all in one place is like a weird dream
Went in, not fully knowing what indie was, only to exit not recognizing one band out of everything 💀 I was an indie fan all along
I recommend chonny jash; mostly known for his tally hall covers but he makes his own stuff that’s absolutely amazing it’s kinda electric I recommend CCCC and the gothic whore and his power hours and Evelyn Evelyn a album story about conjoined twins that are running away from the circus it’s very involved story but some of them stand on their own such as have you seen my sister Evelyn and Evelyn Evelyn
I have two music tastes.
1. 90's alternative and grunge, I LOVE WEEZER, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, that stuff
2. haha wil woob
a fellow aic and will wood fan!?!? that makes me so happy :) (cuz I'm a huge aic and will wood fan)
@@explodingegg123 Oh my gosh of course! So glad to see another fellow of culture haha
I had never heard of The Mechanisms before this video, but I'm OBSESSED!
This is the best possible outcome
I didn’t know these were all linked I just listened to all of them at some point on my own
I honestly think animatics here on youtube seriously influenced all our tastes. 12 year old me was out here DEVOURING jack stauber's songs through them, and he quickly became my favourite for many years, introducing me to all these other artists (also including Bo Burnham, IDKHOW and hotfreaks)
Kabaret Sybarit and Oingo Boingo are also great and probably lie on this triangle somewhere. Oingo Boingo is like a grungy, paranoid version of Jack Strauber, and Kabaret Sybarit is like a French Will Wood.
I know all the artists here, never felt more generalized by something so askew
look up needlejuice records, the record label making tally hall and lemon demon CDs, vinyl, etc. they have lots of artists like this.
0:41 welcome to the STONE IN GLASS EVERYTHING BALANC-
Lmao
THE FACT THAT I WAS JUST ABOIT TO COMMENT “hey how about bo en!” I got into Bo en first, and even though tally hall is my favorite band of all time, Bo en got me into this type of music. I wish it was better know.!
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THE MECHANISMS I AM SO INSANE ABOUT THEM
Its crazy that most these artists mentioned had a song on one of my playlist and if not i've heard of them with the exception of one
(Which im probably gonna take a listen to now)
this trinity of indie bands is extremely well made and surprisingly thought out, yet i’m surprised that 100 gecs wasn’t mentioned! they’d fit best at center of it personally
I literally know all of the tally hall divided songs but 1.... And never knew, safe to say you can always learn kids
I’ve only heard about They Might Be Giants from when they wrote “I’m Not a Loser” from the SpongeBob musical. That was my favorite song in the show so I might listen to more of their music
I cant believe this video has so little views, this is a great video! Very in depth and informative. Keep up the great work!
Thanks
i was literally got into all this cause for some reason my spotify chose to put "dream sweet in see major" while i was doing workout and listening to some "workout playlist"😂😂 I was in my room and just STOPPED immediately and just..didn't believe my ears..
anyway, im so happy now to be in this community!
I would suggest for anyone who especially likes the style from "murders" with the piano and all, to check the live 2023 of will wood (for me is by far the best versions of his songs), and also generally Bo Burnham!!!
I watched this video, tried the mechanisms and didn't like them too much, then became obsessed with the magnus archives (written and voiced by the same guy who plays jonny d'ville), came back and now i love them lmao
okay as someone who listens to all of these artists, i CANNOT recommend AJJ enough. their genre is more indie folk but i still think it fits. i would start with Brave as a Noun, Body Terror Song, and Strawberry (Probably). Terrifyer and Kokopelli Face Tattoo as well if youre up for it
i really recommend birds in the airport !!! he’s INCREDIBLY underrated and makes orchestra rock music with very strange lyrics :)
Bryan Scary is also in the Tally Hall corner I think. Thank you for the video!
