    I do believe this is the species I played with as a child in West Texas. They definitely were not the gold color, but a much darker brown color and secreted a brown substance. I learned to handle them very young so the smell never turned me off from them, and I was a good handwasher! I love the desert species!

    Very informative video. I picked one of these guys up at a show the other day as my very first species of millipede to take care of. Thank you for bringing up how they prefer a drier environment! When I thought of millipedes in the past I always assumed they all loved wet, damp conditions, but these guys don't. Thanks!

    Thanks for these vids! I've been watching them religiously for a while now!! I finally added two golds, and two sonorans to my desert beetle viv its a 75gal, deep moist section, shallow stone and sand section like a dried creek and a deep dry area which is on the hot side. Its heavily planted with biome specific species and the watering has been successful with not making the beetles uncomfortable (the bdfbs haven't lost any of their sunscreen has been my monitoring zone there) My hope is the millipedes borrow and create small moist pockets for beetle larvae to inhabit I'm usually hesitant to use multiple species but with so many spaces and biomes its seemed okay so far...I'm watching it like a hawk though! This is a great video! Thanks! My daughter recently acquired one of these guys and we have a question! Is it normal for them to burrow down deep into the substrate and curl up for an extended period of time? It was very active in the small enclosure we brought it home in. We switched it over to a 5 gallon tank with substrate specifically for isopods and millipedes. Within 24 hours it disappeared. We finally found it by looking through the glass at the bottom of the tank. It has been there curled up for almost two weeks now.

    • @bugsincyberspace

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  4 месяца назад +1

      It just depends so much on the temperature in the home and the amount of ventilation. A slightly moist substrate on at least one side of the tank is recommended and often it's a game of trial and error to find the right amount to add, which itself can change based on temp and how often you open the tank, etc.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад +1

      In colder weather they'll sometimes do that. Many people offer a shallower substrate to the point the millipede can't easily hide from them. Of course, in nature they do seek the comfort of depth and so that is the ideal. I might guess it is molting since this isn't a cold time of year, but perhaps you live in the mountains of Colorado or something. Recently is a very vague term, too. I'd certainly not do any digging for up to 3 wks in case it is molting.

    • @spiderplant
      @spiderplant 2 года назад

      @@bugsincyberspace Thanks! I know that burrowing is pretty normal for a number of reasons. We're in Massachusetts, but the room is kept generally above 65, however there's a heat lamp on the enclosure. I guess I'll just wait and see! I've lost a previous millipede where she didn't make it through molting, so this one will be left well enough alone!

    Hello, very new to the world of insects as pets. My son wants one and I asked that he find something native to North America,...this is what he chose. Thanks so much.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  3 года назад

      This species has been in the hobby for several decades and kept in labs and with only a couple less than perfectly verifiable records have they ever been reproduced. They are wild caught in all cases. In wet weather, in areas they occur in, they emerge in vast numbers and across very wide areas. Fortunately they are rather long lived and so the market for them is rather small.

    Also quick question, from what i know dead leaf mantises are carnivores, and my madagascan marbled has been doing amazing with gut loaded crickets, but i often see sites selling honey sticks for mantises. Do any of my 3 species (caribbean, malaysian, madagascan) need honey? Or will gutloaded flightless fruit flies be fine for the dead leafs and crickets for the marbled like ive been doing?

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  4 года назад +1

      No mantises "need" honey in the same way people don't need it. It's just an option and they do enjoy it. However, there is no substitute for living prey when it comes to mantises. Honey is a treat, mainly. Sometimes a reluctant mantis will start to nibble at honey and then keepers are able to get the mantis to suddenly go for the prey they've been avoiding. Marbleds get big pretty quickly and so they are over an inch long, its probably time to upgrade to a larger feeder for them. Great questions and I'm sure lots of other will benefit by them. Thanks LaPR!

    • @lapreptiles2755
      @lapreptiles2755 4 года назад +1

      @@bugsincyberspace yeah my marbled had gotten pretty big, definitely 1.5 or more inches, i feed him large gutloaded crickets, about half to the full size of his abdomen, is that alright? If not should i upgrade to roaches? Also, i just setup 3 more bioactive terrariums, so i see that you have jeweled flower mantises and i want to order one, so i figure ill grab that and some isopods & springtails. Do you have more than 1 springtail pack in stock, and how many orders of Pill Bugs Armadillidium spp. (15 count) do you have, im looking to purchase 3

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  2 года назад +1

      It's a secretion similar to how you sweat when you are nervous. It is not at all uncommon for them to secrete on you if you handle them roughly. It is best if you let them crawl onto you and off of you, and don't sort of pinch them to pick them up, etc. It is generally advised that you do not allow the secretion to get in your eyes, nose or throat. I suppose an open cut could be added to that list. It does not burn the skin of people with normal skin.

    Do Texas golds need sand? And also should I buy a heat mat since the temp in my room is only 67

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  4 года назад +1

      67 isn't too cold for them. I can't ever make a perfect answer on a heat pad question w/o seeing the tank including its size, substrate depth, etc. The concern is direct and radiant heat. Heat can potentially cause a lot more problems than temps in the 50's or 60's, especially if those temps are just seasonal.
      They don't "need" sand but it's a pretty simple ingredient to source and offer as a common component of their substrate. It often helps substrates to retain their shape when animals burrow through them.

    1)I have a large plastic storage tubs and I was wandering, as long as I am on top of the watering, do I need a lid?
    2) If I kept other species with these fellas, which ones would be best?
    3) can I keep live plants n with them? I figured that their poop would help my plants grow and clean the tank better.

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  4 года назад

      @@volking6338 The brown form of the same species (called Sonoran or chocolate form, also in this video) can live with them just fine. It really depends on how often you add water to the tank and what is in the tank. I need to do a video on a moisture gradient tank where one side is kept more moist than another. In a tank like that you can keep both dry-loving and moisture-loving species together. It's helpful to put slabs of bark down on the moist side though, so that you can always have a micro-climate/micro-habitat for isopods or more moisture loving millipede species to retreat to if it's getting dry out on the surface. If you have any questions about specific insects, etc. feel free to ask!

    • @bugsincyberspace
      @bugsincyberspace  4 года назад +1

      Thanks a bunch, GC! There's a neat millipede called Tylobolus up here in the PNW that you might see if you go out and prowl around at night. As for quantity, it sort of depends on what size they are when you get them. I'd say 3 adults is a pretty solid number for a tank that size although you could run more. It also depends on the depth of substrate. Lots of people add in branches and such too and occasionally they are found in trees and bushes in the wild, lending them a bit of a reputation for being arboreal (to some degree). Basically, whatever you do to increase the surface area in terms of living space will also increase the number that can be reasonably kept in a given size of tank.

      For adults of this species, given the depth of substrate you see in the video, it can still vary. I think 5 is a good number but some people will put in more or less based on what looks good in their eyes.

      Yes you can, but because the gold millipedes like it drier than the ivories it's a good idea to wet down one side of the tank more than the other so that both species can find an area that makes them comfortable. Thanks CG!
