I couldn't wait on amazon for the socket so I bought a 4 prong one from the auto parts store and cut two of the prongs off with a grind wheel. Worked like a charm
Good video. I got it even though there wasn't any talkthrough. My Xterra is 13 years old. Alignment shop told me I had too much end play. I kept reseating the bearings but in the end figured at 135k miles with lots of it being off road miles, the bearings and race may be worn out even though they looked and sounded good. Replaced the races and bearings yesterday. I watched this video for the preloading of the new bearings. I gotta go get the tool now.
I am not the best, but if I packed my bearings like that I would be digging my truck out of the ditch after the wheel flew off. Not only did he not even repack the inner bearing he forgot the snap ring that holds the axle in. Just smearing grease on a bearing is not packing it, you have to force it between the rollers and the cage.
Yeah the bearing packing was bad, but he is the first guy on youtube who actually pre loads the bearing like you're supposed to.
@@erik3423 I'm doing my wheel bearings tomorrow. Do I really need to pre loads the bearing or can I skip it? Don't have the scale. My dad never did and his repairs always lasted fine. I figure the torque wrench ensures proper tension on the bearing and the scale is to ensure the bearings are rolling fine before you put everything back together. Basically the pre tension check has more to do with mileage than anything but idk or I wouldn't be asking.
@@spaghettimonstersjudgingyo504 Preloading is done to eliminate play, if the bearing isn't seated just right you risk premature failure. That being said I've seen plenty of guys do this job without the tool and have no problems. If it was me though, I would spend the 20 bucks on the tool and do the job the way it was intended to be done. Again you'll probably be fine if you don't, just check the wheel at the 12 and 6 position after you're done for that death wobble.
@@erik3423 I replaced the left yesterday and I'm doing the right today. Skipped the bearing preload but I did check for play. It was fine when jacked up and I drove around a bit afterward making a bunch of right turns from a main road on to a side road to see if any looseness in the bearing would show up. It was fine. We have gutters on the side of main roads in AZ like reverse speed bumps. They put a lot of force or your wheel if your turning and hit them so I figured it would be a good way to see if there was any slop. My neighbor also looked at me like I was kind mental when I was making sharp left right turns driving down our street. They're weird people anyway so whatever. Also did the 6 and 12 thing. Honestly I didn't even know about that but it just seemed common sense. Replace a bearing, make sure it's seated properly. Thanks for getting back to me about that though. I had never heard of doing that preload step before.
Seriously!! Who taught this guy how to pack a bearing? He just wiped it on.
For everyone who is going to DIY bearings, When packing bearing with grease you actually need to pack them, manually press grease into the bearing or get a tool to push grease into the bearing. Otherwise your bearing life will be short lived.
Yep I got shown how to do that from a mechanically minded friend of mine.. lucky cos I would never have known 👍
Thanks bud, probably best bet is to grab a copy of the electronic manual from the link above as I had to leave out alot of the preload procedure due to time constraints. The manual has pictures and explains clearly how to do it.
The bird noise makes this video calming.
Nice job,
but what happen with the locking ring you remove out with the Long needle nose pliers. You forgot to put it back.
Great job. It helped me a lot.
one word..... "professional"
good job sir... keep up the good work
Hey bud- keep the DIY vids coming on the D22!
The palms of your hands won’t bother you now after hitting the tools to loosen the bolts but give it about ten years and your gonna remember this day when you can’t even open a milk bottle
Nice bearing packing there.........
Thank god im not the only one
no worries just got one for 9.95 so thanks for the quick reply mate.
Great idea, bad portrayal, but hey its certainly a bit like how you do it. I hope you threw the circlip out 😁
Hey mate can i get the Torque specs and the preload numbers as i be doing mine soon on a 98 D22 QD32 navara, and great video but when u did the bearing you should put pack grease in the bearing too.
first time i seen one done right
in a long time
good on you mate!!!
Excellent video
Very helpful 👍🏼 thank you
Great vid, helped me heaps. Cheers 🍺
I have looked and looked for a wheel hub that resembles mine and yours is it! Can you tell me, if you wanted to change the lugs on the hub, would you be able to simply unbolt the front of the hub by loosening the 6 bolts that are positioned between the lugs and remove the front part of the hub to get the lugs out? Reason i ask is i tried loosening them a bit but they didn't seem to rotate normally, maybe because they have locktite on them or maybe for some other reason. After about half a turn I chickened out and rotated the bolt back to its original position when i felt it wasnt loosening as expected. I hope i made myself understandable.
I agree, he forgot the clip, but at least I have an idea of how to do the same, my Patrol 99 needs the bearings replaced, but I use 2 bearings, he has only one MMMm
thank you very much for your video
Instead of making or buying the tool, is it not possible to use two phillips head screwdrivers and place them in the locking nut and then another bar between them to tighten the locking nut.
Would this be the same procedure on a 4x4 D21 with the locking hub?
Anybody here that has the Electronic Workshop Manual? It's no longer available on eBay. Thanks in advance!
Thanks useful video
everyone skips the part I need.... how the heck do you get that outer wheel bearing to set in the hub?????? I can't get it to go inside the hub for the life of me
I used the old bearing to carefully tap in just enough to grab the thread then tighten to 60-70 ft/pounds to set the bearing preload then back off to 0/ft pounds then finally tighten to 13 ft/pounds PS: keep spinning the hub left and right as you tighten to set bearing evenly
after you remove the manuel hub, you take off another "thing" with spines and locking clip. does that thing belong to the manuel hub? because i have a navara 01 witout any hubs and that thing you remove. gonna buy new hubs for it but dont know what that is, if it comes with the hubs or?? sorry for bad englisch
Can i replace this with automatic hub????
Hi. When tightening the bearing nut, the braking plate have a little slightly slack?
How do you think these bearings will cope with a neg 22 offset wheel and 31'' tyre?
Thanks for the vid.
I have 31 X 10.5 15 on mine and have 275k now and the bearings have been replaced twice with no damage. The tall rims will probably damage your steering though. About to do my third bearing replacement tomorrow. Just because it's time more than anything. The steering system on the pre 2004 Frontiers suck balls.
i have neg 50 and 33s still holds fine after 20k on it. But will propably check it soon
Would this be the same as the 87 Nissan Navara D21 2.4 petrol rear wheel drive? I’m actually getting ready to change my Rotors & brake pads & wheel bearings.
i know this is an old comment, but i have one and the front hubs look identical
hey pall it seams that you forgot sum thing you to forget the Circlip
Hey mate you forgot your cir-clip on the end on the axle...
I wonder how long before the whole thing failed! Did he actually knock out the rear seal and grease the big rear bearing? Or just smear a bit in there? I'm getting my 5 yo to do mine on the weekend, see how he goes! Jimmy
Hey Mate, where did you get the socket to torque the locking ring? Haven't been able to find anything like it in Aus (at a reasonable price anyway). Great vid, keep them coming.
Patrolaparts you'll get the socket.
Why did you not take 4x4 hub off first
Is it worth washing the hub locker or just packing it and putting it back?
your best bet is to clean all the old grease as it’ll have grit in the grease over time it’ll just shorten your new bearings life and it is always good to chuck new grease into every that needs it every now and then
how many NM did u do on the bearings?
If you loosen off those nuts before you jacked it up and took the tyre off it would have been much easier
What are the correct names of the 2 seals that may need replaced?
Two seals? I'm guessing you are talking about the bearing grease seals. Whenever you take those off you're supposed to replace them with new ones. 2 months late but hey.
thanks
its verry dangerous that you forget sum thing like that for you and for the d22
you could always try but I don't think that will work.
Men don’t use you hand as a hammer. Asking for carpel tunnel :| thanks for the strip down vid
So title “How to change bearings”
Comes to actual bearing change...
Blacks screen “change bearings now”!!!!!!!!
hi can you please tell me what is the name of that bearing you removed from the axle
radha rampersad Which bearing? That hub should have 2. The first one you'll come to is the outer wheel bearing. If you replace the wheel bearing with a brand new one then you should replace the race on the inside of the hub. On the other side of the hub there's the inner wheel bearing, race and a metal and rubber oil seal that prevents muck from getting inside. The bearings are a tapered style. I have an Xterra and this is a similar bearing set up. I hope that helps a little.
radha rampersad You'll see the outer wheel bearing at 4:55. He's greasing and reinstalling it. Then the lock washer is screwed on to spec. He used a tool to seat the bearing. Seating the bearing correctly hopefully prevents play in the bearings, which can lead to all sorts of driving, handling, and breaking issues.
great video, but that isn't how you repack a tapered roller bearing
hey do you know the name of that bearing he took out
radha rampersad inner or outer wheel bearing. both get repacked.
Hi thanks for the reply.. That's the bearing when he take out the clip rite.. The one that works the 4wd
radha rampersad I'll have to watch it when I get home and I'll give you time stamps and the like
Thanks that would be greatly appreciated
lol, good spotting.
total silence, no description of anything, not even what you are pouring. thanks for the help but it is absolutely no help to watch a silent video in 2017
A fine example of what NOT to do...SMH
I just wiped it out with a rag as best I could then repacked it
Complete hack! THAT is how you PACK a bearing?? I hate when someone posts videos and they don't explain what they are doing. Luckily I don't need this video, just wanted to check out if I needed a special tool or not. I learned nothing.
made it from a piece of scrap pipe.
learn how to grease a bearing mate
this is dodgey AF.
EMmmm ,
You forgot to put back the snap ring !!!!
Shitty job
Packing the bearing with grease was a bad joke !!!
how many NM did u do on the bearings?
