Huge thank you to the Ex Bungie developers and 343 developers who talked to me about the behind-the-scenes development choices with the flood!! I wanted this video to be a bit different than a standard lore video. What’s something interesting that you learned?
Late Night Gaming The flood are by far my favorite part of the halo universe and I’m glad your video puts an interesting design retrospective into them over the years. Plus the fact that in halo 2 it emphasized they have crazy strength and athletic capabilities like climbing walls for extra creepiness...ahh I’m rambling on :v..anyways great vid
I really found the facts that the Proto-Gravemind started as "flood_captain" and that Fireteam Raven was the first proper introduction to the Juggernaut really interesting. Nice video!

I like to think that the Bioluminescence seen in HCE was due to the flood being trapped in darkness for so long, and they adapted towards that end. This is why some of the flood from Halo Wars 2 are glowing since they were trapped inside the dark insides of High Charity

Favourite story of The Flood is the Spirit of Fire lore, a flood infection form was smart enough to not infect anyone or just didnt meet anyone. Its a classic 'everyone's asleep and everything is going wrong' scenario and I love it.
CE will always be my favorite Flood story. The sheer TWIST, magnified by that fantastic cutscene in 343 Guilty Spark...I felt the horror that Chief is described as feeling in the fittingly-titled The Flood novel adaptation, and I still feel it replaying CE these days. 2 and 3 unfortunately never captured that same feeling for me, although 3 has my favorite Flood level in Floodgate. Even seeing the Flood on EARTH was just kinda a shrug moment, one I felt the narrative didn't really capture the Potentially Apocalyptic Circumstances Of. All that said...I'd love to see an Evolution of the Plasma Rifle!
Honestly, the flood crashing onto Earth is terrifying in theory, but the shipmaster and elites coming in and glassing half of Africa kinda halted that terror. It makes me wish we got a pure horror spin off of Halo, where you're a marine or civilian during the events of Floodgate. Running, shooting, and fighting for survival as you watch fellow soldiers or civilians fall victim to the parasite.

In my first halo 3 playthrough, i remember trying to make the unsc soldier at 9:35 by doing a "snap out of it" trope by punching him. However i forgot how powerful a punch is and i killed him. Bruh
Halo CE is the best iteration of the Flood. They charge recklessly into battle, fire without a second thought, even if their allies stand between them and you. There also was the mystery to how they became convert forms. I prefer them as a mindless parasite.
I like a mix of the two, where they feel ravenous and desperate for every bit of biomass they can collect, and as time goes on they get smarter, using vehicles and opening locked doors via memory of infected hosts.as for their origin , I would be content if they just originated from outside the galaxy. Giving off this creepy vibe that maybe there are whole galaxies infected by the flood.
I will always love most the vision of the Flood presented in Halo CE, the visual and sound design presented for them was excellent. I do approve of the addition of the Gravemind and the concept of the Flood as a whole having a guiding intelligence though.
Halo SPV3 Flood are an absolute nightmare to fight. There are additional combat forms that release infection forms upon dying and other pure flood forms that do nothing but waste your ammo reserves.
10:09 Not to be weird but when me and my cousin would playthrough Halo 3s campaign on split screen, In the good old days, He would always call those doors the vagina doors. Everytime we would come across those doors he would say that word. We also had no Idea what we were doing on the mission Cortana. Since enemies would apparently keep spawning because of the map being small or something we would just sit in every room killing enemies. No idea how we finished that level by just sitting there.
I like to believe that Halo CEs flood evolved differently from Halo 2 and 3s. Halo CE is more fungal and sturdy, while halo 2 and 3 is more fleshy and squishy, but more aggressive.
The Flood Spartan is still one of the coolest things I’ve seen in Halo. Imagine if it was a customisation option in Infinite. Or, at least, something similar.
Actually, the flood at the PEAK of its strength consisted of multiple splinters, still huge mind you, each one having a keymind. The one we experience in halo is still just barely at an effective size. Edit: the pre-halo firing flood managed to slip space a few large groups out of the Milky Way, so there might be an even BIGGER infection out there.
I loved just how verbose and eloquent the Gravemind was. In fact, the thing I miss most right now in Halo is the poetry that both Cortana and the Gravemind composed or repeated (Cortana in Halo 3 where she's basically halucinations for the Chief, memories of Halsey played back to him or echoes of her suffering). One of my favorite quotes of Halo to this day, alongside most of Sergeant Johnson's quotes, is "The gate has been unlatched / Headstones pushed aside. / Corpses shift and offer room / A fate you must abide!" I loved it, and the new Forerunner enemies don't have that delightful refinement.
I feel bad for the marine that survived from not being infected in halo 3. He just witnesses his fellow brothers and sisters in arms become these horrific monstrosities and be forced to kill them and put them out of their misery while also having to hear the gravemind talk through them making it more unbearable and unreal to believe as a human. That’ll really give you some major PTSD for real!
Some quick flood lore the flood captain is called a proto gravemind it's the first gravemind and then once they have enough biomass to create the gravemind and there was a 3rd form of the grave mind it was called the key mind If I remember correctly
Fucking love the flood. Gravemind in 2 was insanely awesome to me as a kid, seeing him in the remaster made me so happy. They really made them an amazing and horrifying creature.
While I miss the mystery of the flood, I kinda like the idea that the sins of the forerunners led to the creation of the flood. There is still much mystery and debate to be had. Did the forerunners kill the precursors out of jealousy, or because the precursors were planning to wipe everything out? Did the flood spare the humans out of some memory of the precursors favoring them, or was it just strategically done to mess with the forerunners?
I find it funny that a lot of people treat the Flood like any other kind of zombie, then they start playing and be like: "Wait... they can run? Wait... they can jump?! Wait... THEY CAN USE GUNS?! WAIT... THEY CAN DRIVE VEHICLES???!!!!"
Good use of that pic of embrakul 😂. Also, my favorite flood moment is when they help you stop the ring from activating in halo 3, it really showed how desperate the whole situation was and I’m a sucker for factions in movies and games working with and against each other when a threat is great enough
Evolution of the design of the Elites! Really loved the Flood via the Forerunner books. Very much shows the scale of them and just how powerful they could be.
9:41 that part of halo 3, gave you the psychological look into a flood outbreak. The terror, the agony, the sadness and horro of killing a former friend turned monster. And the ptsd afterwards that will haunt you forever. The shit gets really deep
The Gravemind's poetic language stuck with me as a kid. I was scared shitless of the flood, sure, but when Halo 2 introduced this grotesque poet as its master I was utterly ENTHRALLED with them as a concept and a faction in the Halo universe.
Heyooo! Great video as always! I was wondering if you’re still doing the Weapons Evolution videos. :) Is the a chance you can do the Shotgun evolution, please? ^_^
I want to see a blightland in person, maybe much more flood diversity than reusing the same combat form model but different ones with different animations really showing the mutation qualities the Flood have
That’s a video I’m considering but it’s really hard to find ways to have “deep thoughts” on each version of the plasma rifle. It’s easily THE best in combat evolved with each iteration afterwards being progressively less interesting
The red energy sword is called the Blood Blade. It’s a special version used by an elite Spec Ops Unit called the Silent Shadow. Also the Flood from Halo 4 use a modified Energy sword that’s converted to a Flood claw on the right hand.
asahiboi As far as I’m aware not really. However the Sangheili with the bull horns on his helmet that attempted to slay Atriox on orders from the Prophet of Truth known as the Executioner did use one.
PackHunter117 That’s the exact scene I question, if the red Energy Sword were to be used to kill Heretics, since Atriox basically resigned from the Covenant, and the Covenant never actually planned to keep him alive.
CE: Powerful but useless at a distance Halo 2: useless in general until you're right in the enemy's face Halo 3: much better, but it still isn't as good as CE ODST: Hard to use because of the massive firing lines you usually have Reach: rare, but decent no idea on halo 4 and 5, but I can geuss they run out of ammo quick
@@valen9835 recently I started to think the shotgun as the unsc equivalent of the energy sword with out the lock on cuz its pretty useless unless ur right in their face
@@gibby8540 I really want the CE pistol in some form to return to infinite's weapon sandbox, as the close to medium range headshot weapon to challenge the battle rifle and dmr
I played Fire team Raven in Newcastle in England recently for my birthday! But I only had £1 of change on me so I didn't get far. I wanted to get the high score and play it with my girlfriend which I've got into Halo over the past 2 years
I just noticed, the halo 4 infected Spartan isn’t wearing any armor, just the one piece bodysuit that Spartans wear under the mjolnir armor. Maybe that’s how they got infected in the first place? Got exposed to flood spores while outside of their armor so they had no protection from it.
One thing that's always made me chuckle is my personal experience with first seeing Halo 3's flood. I was an 11 year old at the time and I had the day of school as I had a pretty bad bug. I remember playing Halo 3 up to Floodgate, and then getting so scared of the first encounter because of the new art style on the brute infection forms that I had to stop playing, I was really creeped out by it. But because I was off with really horrible diarrhoea, for some reason my body associated the smell with the flood. From now on whenever I see Halo 3 flood all my mind makes me smell is that. I mean it fits well with the ascetic at least.
Huge thank you to the Ex Bungie developers and 343 developers who talked to me about the behind-the-scenes development choices with the flood!!

Halo CE is the best iteration of the Flood. They charge recklessly into battle, fire without a second thought, even if their allies stand between them and you. There also was the mystery to how they became convert forms. I prefer them as a mindless parasite.
Evan Sutton I’m a fan of both “versions” of the flood.
The natural fungal parasite AND the curse from a lovecraftian race of elder gods
Bungie's greatest achievements:
- Halo CE control scheme and sandbox
- Halo 2 and 3 hype and sales
- Marty O'Donnell
- Sphincter doors
Flood: *Shoots a shotgun one handed*
"A ability that most would consider unnatural..."
Halo 3 flood were the absolute best, so dynamic and so much depth.
9:36 fun fact: the first time I played floodgate on H3, I used my deployable shield to protect this guy
I love the Flood in Halo CE and Halo 3. But Halo 3 is the easiest to fight because most flood can be killed in one melee.
I like to believe that Halo CEs flood evolved differently from Halo 2 and 3s. Halo CE is more fungal and sturdy, while halo 2 and 3 is more fleshy and squishy, but more aggressive.
Teh Spearhead: Well done Captain, I'm sure Humanity is very proud of your ability to turn into an alien's prostate.
Ehhhhh that's my image of the Juggernaut in Fireteam Raven! That's also the very first image of the Juggernaut in Fireteam Raven!
Y a y
9:37 i still cannot believe how great the voice actors are for even a single marine
Emrakul
The Eldrazi are too spooky for me
Meow
This Replies make no sense so : Poop
Emrakul is basically the flood in the magic universe.
An educated nerd. I like
I loved just how verbose and eloquent the Gravemind was.
For some reason when I was younger, my dumbass mistook the Gravemind of Installation 05 as a consciousness of Masterchief
Am I only one who noticed that the OG gravemind looks like Chief’s helmet cut in half horizontally??
Some quick flood lore the flood captain is called a proto gravemind it's the first gravemind and then once they have enough biomass to create the gravemind and there was a 3rd form of the grave mind it was called the key mind If I remember correctly
“Alas brother. The Flood, it has evolved!”
❤❤❤❤❤ hands down the best halo narrative content on the internet. From the bottom of my heart, thanks.
The scariest flood form in the halo universe is Combat Forms with Rocket Launchers
Fucking love the flood. Gravemind in 2 was insanely awesome to me as a kid, seeing him in the remaster made me so happy. They really made them an amazing and horrifying creature.
We just going to ignore that image he used of Emrkrul?
I see you're a man of culture as well
How about the Brethren Moon?
WAIT THEY CAN BUILD SPACE SHIPS??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hold on, THEY CAN INFECT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?!
Mhmm, the games barely scratch the diseased surface of the Flood
Good use of that pic of embrakul 😂. Also, my favorite flood moment is when they help you stop the ring from activating in halo 3, it really showed how desperate the whole situation was and I’m a sucker for factions in movies and games working with and against each other when a threat is great enough
Evolution of the design of the Elites! Really loved the Flood via the Forerunner books. Very much shows the scale of them and just how powerful they could be.
Keep doing what you’re doing you, absolute madlad
12:27 I would enjoy seeing that crossover
3:03 but officially was called a proto-gravemind later on
I genuinely hope we get them in Halo Infinite. I'd like to see what 343 can do with next gen level of detail in the slipspace engine!
This didn't age well.
Suggestions:
Evolution of the Master Chief
Evolution of Elites
Evolution of Grunts
12:31 Is that a Brethren Moon from Dead Space?
I love these videos man! Keep it up and don’t stop making evolution videos!
The arcade game fireteam raven is also at the bayamon (sorry if I spelled it wrong) Dave & busters at plaza del sol
TheBluePwnedStuffed It’s also in other arcades.
Loved your coverage of the flood's origins. Great visuals too.
The gravemind looks like Xol, the giant worm in Destiny 2.
Cool.
9:41 that part of halo 3, gave you the psychological look into a flood outbreak. The terror, the agony, the sadness and horro of killing a former friend turned monster. And the ptsd afterwards that will haunt you forever. The shit gets really deep
FINALLY someone commented about this. I thought I was the only one to think about that scene.
It’s weird to think about that in universe, the flood were defeated by a giant green guy who couldn’t swim
I don't think Chief can swim with a heavy metal suit
flood_captain just doesn't roll off the tongue as much as Proto-Gravemind
The real question is.....
How did Dustin Echoes survived the Covenant, the Flood and the Halo explosion?
The Gravemind's poetic language stuck with me as a kid. I was scared shitless of the flood, sure, but when Halo 2 introduced this grotesque poet as its master I was utterly ENTHRALLED with them as a concept and a faction in the Halo universe.
Heyooo! Great video as always!
I was wondering if you’re still doing the Weapons Evolution videos. :)
Is the a chance you can do the Shotgun evolution, please? ^_^
I want to see a blightland in person, maybe much more flood diversity than reusing the same combat form model but different ones with different animations really showing the mutation qualities the Flood have
This, so much this. I hope we finally get lore accurate Flood in the main games one day
@@DARKdr3dnaut07 if that will happen then we will get lore accurate Master Chief😂
Lol
What's your thoughts on an evolution of the plasma rifle.
Sh*t
That’s a video I’m considering but it’s really hard to find ways to have “deep thoughts” on each version of the plasma rifle.
It’s easily THE best in combat evolved with each iteration afterwards being progressively less interesting
@@LateNightHalo I can help you
@@LateNightHalo is the plasma repeater a plasma rifle or no i still never could understand
Not a lore junkie like expirea
@@theshuffler7197 it's related but is considered a different type of weapon
“Believe it baby, it talks!” Is the best reference I’ve seen in awhile
The red energy sword is called the Blood Blade. It’s a special version used by an elite Spec Ops Unit called the Silent Shadow. Also the Flood from Halo 4 use a modified Energy sword that’s converted to a Flood claw on the right hand.
Wasn’t the red energy sword also used for exiling or killing Heretics if the Heretics were to turn themself in?
asahiboi As far as I’m aware not really. However the Sangheili with the bull horns on his helmet that attempted to slay Atriox on orders from the Prophet of Truth known as the Executioner did use one.
PackHunter117 That’s the exact scene I question, if the red Energy Sword were to be used to kill Heretics, since Atriox basically resigned from the Covenant, and the Covenant never actually planned to keep him alive.
asahiboi However the Silent Shadow First Blades use Bloodblades too
Was the blood sword featured in the cutscene with atriox?
it's nice to recall every now and then that the halo 2 anniversary gravemind cutscene is one of the most iconic cutscenes in gaming
Could you do an evolution on the shotgun in halo?
CE: Powerful but useless at a distance
Halo 2: useless in general until you're right in the enemy's face
Halo 3: much better, but it still isn't as good as CE
ODST: Hard to use because of the massive firing lines you usually have
Reach: rare, but decent
no idea on halo 4 and 5, but I can geuss they run out of ammo quick
Pokemon115 halo 5 is good at close to sorta mid range but halo 4,you gotta be 4 ft away to take their shields down
@@valen9835 recently I started to think the shotgun as the unsc equivalent of the energy sword with out the lock on cuz its pretty useless unless ur right in their face
@@gibby8540 I really want the CE pistol in some form to return to infinite's weapon sandbox, as the close to medium range headshot weapon to challenge the battle rifle and dmr
Man that speech from halo three is genuinely scary. really well done and acted.
Tasty little popcorn bois
I think an Evolution Of The Warthog would be nice to see, considering it’s been in every game, and has changed drastically over time.
Halo ce flood were the best!
