good on you, i too had a lifetime dream to farm, with virtually no cash to start, and found that you have to make money to farm, not farm to make money. still farming at nearly eighty years old. enjoyed every day of it.
Congrats on your new venture. Exciting times for you. And a big well done to the Doc for giving you the opportunity to strike out for yourselves, its a shame to see so many young people that want to get in to the industry basically barred do to unobtainable start up costs. Im one of the lucky ones being a 3rd generation farmer. To the old boys (and girls) with noone to take over, be like Phil!
Thank you! Phil and Liz have been brilliant! If they wanted to they could just rent the place out to a neighbour, it’d be far more lucrative for them and less hassle but they aren’t like that! It’s an opportunity I couldn’t possibly turn down!
Congratulations Josh and Abbey really looking forward to watching your journey. Im a first Generation farmer so know only to well how hard it is to get the opportunity. Were only very small scale keep a few herdwick sheep and bring in four week old dairy cross calves and bring them on, similar to what your planning it sounds. Anyway good luck guys wishing you much success and keep the videos coming. Ive actually learnt something on your last video about the portable weigh scales didnt know there was such things ive been having a look online at them, its something i would like to purchase. I will be looking out to see if you go for one. Cheers Ben
We all have to start somewhere! Looking forward to seeing what we can achieve with it all! I did some research into them at Lamma, currently looking at the te Pari set up. Thanks for watching!
Hi Josh at last I found you on the new channel. What nice Devon calves you have got, it's a good building, I can see you are going to enjoy this project great all the very best.
What an exciting day Josh, a New Year, a New Adventure, a New Channel and remember that old saying, "that from small acorns great oaks grow". I was 21 when I started my first venture and had a number of strings to my bow over the years. Had my ups and downs and took selective advice and learned as much as I could from those in the know and was successful, but along the way I had as much fun as possible, and that way I never seen it as work. Wishing you and Abi all the very best.
It is exciting indeed! As they say if you do what you love you never work a day in your life! I’m grateful to have Phil and Jon for advice amongst others along the way! Happy new year!
I’m glad people are finding it on their feed! It’s very different from what we do on JM Farming, but hopefully just as entertaining! Thanks for following!
Go for it with regards marketing, and selling online, boxed beef. With modern couriers, and online sales platforms you can sell home reared beef. I’m sure I make it sound simple, but it must be possible. Your own channel will be as interesting. I am happy to help and support you with connections and marketing advice… that was my career.
I have come here because it came up as a new video. I watch a lot of farming/ranching videos from around the world. I am in Australia. Who is Dr Phil? :)
Thank you for coming along! You might also enjoy our other channels: JM Farming and also Busy With Dr Phil! I spent my honeymoon in Australia in December! Dr Phil is the man who owns the farm (the Father Christmas lookalike) who I also work with. We call him Dr Phil because he has a PHD.
First video from Back my place congratulations Josh That' a great start for you with buying Dr Phil's calves their fine looking animals and the shed is a nice set up AND a Massey 375 everything you need to start you're own farming adventure with Abie and Dr Phil on standby to help and advice Looking forward to following along on you're new adventure Josh and wishing you every success with it
Great news they should be a great group of cattle I wish you the best of luck and looking forward to seeing what you do Happy new year to you and family Cheers Antony 👍👍
Best of luck Josh it's a perfect shed for rearing calves/stores, is there much acerage for grazing and with your knowledge would you consider growing some crops to feed your stock?? Best of luck with it 👍👍
Thanks Mick! There’s about 35 acres or so, but we will probably make silage and keep the cattle in to start with! Will be looking to add some bought in feed too!
@@BackMyPlace you can't start a farm from "NOTHING"....LAND BUILDINGS....INSURANCE....EQUIPMENT....ANIMALS....FOOD FOR ANIMALS....ETC. CAPITAL HAD TO COME FROM SOME PLACE....
@@jimmason1072 lots of capital letters here. Well I don’t have any of those things, I’ve worked me backside off to drum up some money to buy the animals, and go into a share farming agreement with someone who has those things... Does that not count?
I came over from your other channel and I am glad to have subscribed straight away. It will be a great series watching your adventure evolve and grow over time. I wish you the best of luck and Happy New Year 🥳
Now you’re farming!😁I think it’s a great idea for a youngster to get started and a mentor around as well (or old boy🫣😊) just make sure you keep talking to each other as you’ll both have different opinions at some point, they just need worked out 👌👍

Sadly that’s true, at least to start anyway. I’m hoping once we are up and running it’ll at least cover its own costs.

Congrats josh and Abbi found your new channel josh will you get a new tractor 🚜 nice to see Dr. Phil. Will you be taking big boots 👍👍
Thanks Sandy! I’d have to prize big boots off Jon! Using Phil’s tractors for now, maybe one day we will get one!
Where are u Josh ? I'm looking to get some Devons as a money making hobby . Possibly more in future . Hopefully bit of showing .
Hi Steven, we are in Devon, not far from Whiddon Down. Phil mentioned something about maybe selling some cows with calves at foot later on this year.
Are you still doing the podcast if you are a name you could use is Tractor Tuesday and you host it on a Tuesday
Nice suggestion!
why isnt santa at 7.40 wearing his uniform?
He was trying to be incognito on the farm! 😂
This lad is afraid of a weanling, he made a mockery out of you at the door of the shed
Had my pants down!
There is a book any fool can be a dairy farmer were a dealer baught the cows nobody wanted as they kicked milkers off etc
I’ve seen my fair share of those cows in my time! Spent nearly 10 years milking 🙃
Why do you call bullocks and weanlings cows?
For those that aren’t from an agricultural background, a cow is a cow
Unless someone educates them

Woo! Absolutely, we are both laid back chaps, so I’m sure it’ll be a smooth ride, but wise words!
