Perhaps you should price saw dust or bark mulch for bedding the cattle. It may work out a lot cheaper than straw.

i have started chopping ours a few years ago for me its much better and the cattle eat it far better and no waist

Thanks for a great video Josh. Nice to see your stock looking so well and hope the TB testing goes well and you can get your stock away. Like the idea of splitting your new intake, as it will have a positive effect on your cash flow.. Its a pity you wont have time to do some of the tractor work yourself, but it would be foolish to try and take on too much especially when your still integrating into your new position. Thanks

Will let you away with it this time Josh, but fully expect you to knock your own meadows next year 😊😊. Seems to be a good bit of under used space where the muck spreader etc is stored could you free that up for more cattle? I know youre not fenced for it, but would the investment in water and fencing not be much better than having them housed this late in the year?
Thank you haha! The reason I keep them in is so that I don’t have to worry about them breaking out or anything like that! It’s 30 minutes from home if something happens. Piece of mind is worth a lot!

I’d definitely chop that stuff mate, especially if your feeding to younger animals. If you’re worried about bale stability, leave the outside knives out. What the plan with buying cattle in? Grown them on to feeder weights?(ready for finishing) or take them right through?
We chopped them! I think I like the idea of buying weaned calves and selling them as "good stores"
@@BackMyPlace that’s the go, you’ll be able to have higher numbers doing that. What sort of margin are you looking at? Need rapid turn over of cattle?

Maybe I missed it but why are the cows still in the shed? Surely it's cheaper for them to be eating grass?
Couple reasons, tb testing soon. Also I wanted to cut a lot of the ground for silage to get a good stock of feed for the next batch of cattle.
Would selling the steers and keeping the heifers and maybe buying a few more to AI later make any sense rather than selling yearlings and buying calves? Not sure what a semen stick cost over there and I realise that you have to fit your cattle into space that Phil isn't using.
I’ve thought of doing that. One option that I’m thinking of doing is butting dairy heifers and putting them in calf and selling them in calf

If you want haylage don't chop it, the bales will sage when you stack them.
we chop ours and the people we use to bale are so packed tight and are solid he has a newish JD baler the bales do not sage at all , never had any of the bales sage they are the same as when you stack them

Thanks John, it’s far easier for me to have them in, as bad as that is. I haven’t got to worry about fences and also there’s no water to the fields so have to fill a cart all the time.

Its a shame you haven't got time to mow and ted with Phil's equipment it does save a little money i mow and ted our grass and make some hay too ps would your heifers not be worth alot more money in a few months if they were served and in calf its just the more you get for these cattle the more calves you can buy PPS I'd avoid calves with pur bred Holstein mother's if possible I've had them in the past they can be very disappointing
It is, if I really wanted to I could have probably done it, but we were silaging at work too so it’s all happened at once! Yes they probably would be worth more in calf, I have a couple people interested in them for that reason! Thanks for the advice ☺️

Yes I have, but getting a bull in for 3 seems a lot of work. I could sell them as pedigree bulling heifers!

Phil still has a few cows about so can potentially have the calf’s from them, and then I was hoping for a native breed cross I think
Cows look really good. Phil's place does not. Looks like a forest with a building in the middle.
