My son owns a Duramax and pulls a heavy duty trailer with a Tractor loaded on it. He told me that he never loads the tractor on the trailer with the trucks transmission in park. He always puts it in neutral and applies the parking brake so it doesn't break the transmission. I seen on this video them loading the tractor and how it looked to be pretty violent on the truck.
We have an F350 at work to tow a Cat 277D skid steer with a 10' Kage snowplow, whole package weighs about 18,000lbs for the trailer and skid steer. Only benefit a dually gives is stability for heavy and long trailers over single rear wheel. People need to keep in mind axle weight limit zones, other wise it can be a hefty fine.
I think it's awesome that all big 3 are killing it when it comes to trucks and cars. With the heavy handed EPA laws, i thought we would be back to the early 80's but instead these vehicles are putting out all time numbers. Diesels putting out 800 ft lb, pony cars putting out 500 to 700 hp and 0-60 in the 3 second range. Great time to be a car or truck guy in my opinion.
My how times change
He forgot to mention that the hood scoop looks bad ass.
I may be wrong but it seems I saw where the hood and scoop are made from aluminium. Yes they are using plastics in many areas and that keeps the weight and believe it or not, the costs down. I have a 2011 Silverado and have had no issues with any of the plastic that have been used on it and it has over 100,000 miles.
Congratulations on your Super Bowl Championship #2. 1970 & 2020. Fitting after 50 years. Lamar Hunt is smiling.
You see those semis in the background driving backwards crazy fast at the 3:51 mark?? Crazy!! lol
That hood scoop looks really sharp
So let me get this straight. Your "comparison" was two completely different loads, towed in completely different ways, with completely different drivers, and the guy works for GM?
Great job 🙄
Why wouldn't you tow the same trailer with the same load with the same method of towing with the same driver on the same road?
scottb8907 This was event put on by Chevrolet, Big Tex and John Deere. They didn't get to pick and choose what equipment to run.
Now your comment is onebtgat makes great sense. How can it be a true comprison if the equipment and gear use are NOT the same?
Oh and WTF is a tester doing in the passenger seat? No CDL-A should've never been an issue.
scottb8907 i was looking forward to a real comparison at close to max loads where im sure you will notice. A box trailer would be even better for cross winds
My question is: Could I drive from New York to California with max load and have no engine problems? That’s true reliability and durability.
Well yes. These trucks get more abuse driving in cities and towns than a cross country trip even with a max load
Chevy’s trucks are the most beautiful thing on this earth 😍
@Roscoe Dogg yes sir
No you are
I got the first year lb7 Duramax in a 2001 Chevy 2500 HD Excab 6.5 ft bed black in color with only 95,000 miles been garage keep rust free. To me it one of the best looking trucks Chevy has ever put out.
Did I miss the answer to the question posed in the title?
Dually tires last longer, more stable, and safer in the event of a tire blowout
Mekhanic1 100% agree. I used to get a single year out of Transforce AT's in my old SRW duramax-pulling a trailer for work 5 days/wk. This was with regular rotations, and i discovered it was due to the amount of trailer pin weight i run on my rear axle. Same tires on my 14 dually will be 2 years, running the same annual mileage. I replace them at end October, so I have fresh tread going into winter months here in the northern part of the US. I'll save $600 - minimum - over the first 6 yrs of ownership of this truck.
The reasoning for not having a 30k capacity sounded like numerical mumbo-jumbo.
I wish they would find a different spot for the DEF tank. It's ridiculous how low it hangs
Id break it in the first month....then delete the truck since they'd ask a ridiculous price for a replacmeent tank.
Mike Lopez "Excuse me, sir. Your def tank is showing." Lol
2020 models they're moving it but lets be honest, once warranties up its coming off lmao
100% agreed
I hate having to lift the hood on my 2015 GMC 2500HD to add DEF. Put the fill next to the fuel fill location.
This video is awesome. I took so many screenshots. That blue 3500 has my heart.
I like how he keeps saying "a little bit of stress on this truck." Ha! That right there buddy, both the 2500 and 3500, are complete workhorses. That truck doesn't he know that trailer is back there
Nice to see a review in our backyard. That stretch on 80 can take some serious get up and go to match the interstate speed
I likely will never max it out, but the 1,984lb payload and 13k towing of my 2018 GMC 2500HD SLT seems way underrated compared with the competition. It’s amazing how quickly the weight of options add up and suck payload away.
Icutmetal I was under the impression payload has more to do with limits on GVWR than actual physical capacity. I only have a 2006 Ram 1500 with a payload rating of ~1760lbs, but I’ve certainly put a ton in it before, not to mention all the tools I carry in the cab simultaneously.
GM trucks need to add rear A/C vents, can you ask a GM rep the next time you test another GM truck if and are they going to add them in the GM trucks in the future. Living in Central Texas the heat stays around 100 index most of the summer, thanks Roman for the video Happy Fourth!!!!!!!!!!
CalviNx9229 yeah my 2005 Silverado has them. Wtf?
ricky safer i was about to say that lol
ricky safer.... I have rear A/C in my 2006, only the crew cab will have it?
Agree, only complaint on my 2016 Silverado
Thank God they added for 2019 that was huge thing I hated for my 2014 Silverado 1500.
Great vid as always and happy fourth from your neighbors up north!!
Duramax the best
How about a video on diesel deleting? Would be interesting to see a video on it. Keep on the great job team, you guys are awesome!
It's so cool towing all the John Deere's. I had a backhoe business using JD backhoe and JD skid loader. I would have loved to play with the big toys. Hopefully they'll do it again.
+MrTruckTV we missed you Kent! This video needs Mr. Truck for sure!
Until the other day I would have agreed with that engineer about not needed to tow 30,000 lbs. We bought a gooseneck dump trailer for the farm and used it last week to haul wheat to the local elevator. The two loads I hauled hit the scales at 31,000 lbs, averaging 260 bushels of 17% moisture wheat. I wasn't hauling far and I didn't need to go fast, but the 6.7l Cummins in the '15 Ram 2500 hauled it no sweat. Honestly, I like Chevy trucks even though you can't deal with the local dealer. That max tow rating is now a major player when I look at new trucks now that I have a trailer that is capable of fully maxing out any new HD pickup on the market. Come on GM, step up to the plate and play. There's a good chance my next truck will be a Ram...
ih1206 I grew up in a farm, hauling plenty of wheat to the local elevators. trust me, the Dmax/Allison combo would drag that dump trailer just fine. I've got one, albeit I only tow about 12-15k daily for my business. it doesn't break a sweat in the summer months with my little loads.
deeohgi I have no doubt in my mind that the Chevy would have no problem dragging it to the elevator. I do believe that their logic is a bit flawed. Maybe if your focus customer is the weekend warrior that tows a fifth wheel camper, then I could see where they are coming from that their research shows that they shouldn't bump their numbers.
ih1206 But your ram 2500 is only rated to max tow 17,000lbs, why would this bother you?
Ppl
like the comparison Roman. good job!
+Jonathan Powers thanks for the kind words!
I bought a 2022 Chevy 3500hd dually to tow my skids and excavators with. Average load in total was around 16-20k but occasionally we had a CAT that we needed moved and it weighed with the trailer around 23k. The chevy did good. Handled it without question on flat roads. But up a few hills and man it didnt necessarily struggle, but it was having a tough time. I then traded it in on a 2022 Ram 3500hd dually with the high output cummins. Game changer. The ram did so much better with the weight and even did a 32k total tow for about a 70 mile stretch and that cummins didnt struggle at all. I prefer the looks of the GM line but that high output cummins is a real beast
Great video, would like to see a ram version of this soon, happy forth of july
I'd love to live over there just to tow around stuff :D
I have a 2016 high country 3500 dually and its pretty annoying to hear the reason why GM made the tow rating at 24k he said "because most of our costumers dont usually pull that much thats why we don't match ford and dodge at 30k" that make no since if anything people would be more comfortable pulling 22k if it was rated at 30k instead of 24k, also I've pulled 30,000 behind my duramax with no problem at all and I had total confidence in the truck, I would be totally comfortable pulling 35-40k with it, lol sorry for my little rant I just find it really annoying because the Chevy pulls 30k just fine heck the new duramax beat the dodge and ford on the ike gauntlet up and down pulling the same weight so anyway doesn't make a bit of since GM
Dustin Shepard It makes no sense to cover 90% of your market instead of 1%? The vast majority of people that haul 30k on the regular are going to be buying medium and heavy duty (think Freightliner/International) trucks.
rcairforceone I understand but the trucks now a days are a night a day difference from 10 years ago and more capable and the fact that the other 2 competitors are rated too tow 30k and why cover 90% might as well cover 100%
rcairforceone That would cover 100% of the market instead of 90%.
I would LOVE to tow 30k with one of these instead of the uncomfortable Freightliner they make me use.
Dustin Shepard i agree. These new duramax trucks are easily capable of pulling more than 30,000
Evan Salyer
Then why don't they report that? Get caught carrying above the load and you're in for a heap of trouble. For the same price of the truck I will take the one with the manufacturers says can tow more. I understand that a majority of people aren't going to ever tow that amount, but it's not going to hurt. There's a difference of Designing a truck made for the average person or making a crappy truck and saying that you made it for the average person.
You mentioned CDL a lot in your videos from the research I've done as long as you own the trailer the truck the load a CDL is not required the CDL is only required if you are towing for someone else or someone else's equipment the way you make it sound every farmer would need a CDL to tow his tractors only needed if he is towing for someone else or being paid to do it
Farmers are exempt from CDL if they are within 150 miles of their farm. Ranchers are too except in California
I have a 2500 duramax long bed 4 wheel drive. I use it for work. I haul up to 2300 in the bed or I pull my gooseneck trailer for heavier loads and or longer equipment. I love love love my Chevy!! Not to forget to mention... its a good looking beast!!!
man I just love SILVERADOS
I was really hoping you would have towed the same load and same trailer with each truck. That would have given you more of an outlook as to which truck you really need with maneuverability as well as handling. I must say I'm slightly dissapointed in this installment guys.
Keep up the good work though as I love this channel. Perhaps in the future you could compare a first Gen 6.0 gas to the latest Gen 6.0 gas in a heads up towing and fuel comparison. I am firm believer in my 2000 GMC 2500 reg cab 4x4 as its an awesome truck and I can't justify buying a new one at this time with 150k on the ticker and still runs strong. Although I would like to see how far they've come. My father has a 2012 gmc 2500HD 4x4 and I feel my truck does just as well as his towing his 9k lb 5th wheel camper which I borrow from time to time. I know on paper his truck anhilates mine but I dont feel the difference. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again for the videos guys!
Roman - glad that you were able to see Davenport Works as well as the Demo Site. Hopefully you had enough time to stop at either the John Deere pavilion, corporate headquarters, or a factory tour to check out the other major machines on display. if you're ever back, you should definitely try to knock off other big equipment off of your list, such as the 944k loader or 1050k bulldozer.
Awesome to hear the GM engineer. Very helpful.
God's country along the Mississippi River. Beautiful area for sure.
The best engine brake test we eastern Iowegians can come up with on I-80 is the east bound lanes approaching to the river.
Roman, going in with the tough questions, haha.
2500 if you are a normal person. 3500 if your towing a house
great video BTW!!!
Happy 4th!!!
I am curious as to whether or not you test truck bed payload by hauling around one of the larger , heavier truck campers ?
nice review! when you guys do the towing and empty mpg review you should compare it to 2016 lml apples to apples old vs new see if the new higher hp/tq lp5 can out milage the old one! :) I know there's a lot of lml guys that are thinking about trading up
This is why I got a GMC 2500 . Thanks guys
anyone know if the 2018 3500 high country will have the lane assistance?
He's talking about maintaining engine power on difficult and slow climbing grades, and how the hood scoop helps the engine keep from thermal throttling, but more importantly, I'm sure he's also talking about the charged air temperature... but they still haven't developed a liquid to air intercooler for the 6.6 LP5... they did for the 3.0... 🤔 Why not the 6.6? If you really want power unaffected by less air passing through the front grille, you need liquid intercooling. Adding it prior to, in tandem with the stock air intercooler would make a noticeable increase in power that stays true even on the hottest day, towing the heaviest load possible, slowly up a steep hill. It would be amazing to see someone do a video testing the various temperatures before and after adding liquid intercooling on a heavy tow test, and Dyno readings too
i scale about 21k with my 94 f350 7.3ps. i like the dually for my 9 ton trl handles my tractor so nicely i could go with a lighter duty trl since i use only about 50% of wieght but all my length
I've got a question, in one part where the eng is driving he says that he has the exhaust brake on - the road appeared level- isn't that like grandma driving with her foot on the brake, I'm assuming here that when you switch on the ex brake that you are then using your turbo as a brake as you are driving down a flat road. I understand that when you have the ex brake on and use your brakes like for an exit then it also downshifts for you. I've got a 2014 love it, tow a 14000 fifthwheel but don't use the ex brake unless i'm trying to slow down with hills or whatever.
Roman,if your going to test these heavy duty trucks all the time why don't you get the proper licence so you don't have to rely on a guy who works for Chevy to tell you how it tows because I think he would be a little bias, don't you
Once again thanks for the suggestion. Our entire team tows up to 26,000 pounds. That's a lot of weight. Ken on our team has his CDL and when the weight goes above 26,0000 pounds he gets behind the wheel. Unfortunately Ken was schedule to work with Roman on this video but because of personal matters he was unable to attend. BTW: Roman would love to get his CDL however most of his time is spent either shooting, editing or producing these videos.
Thanks for the quick reply
The Fast Lane Truck ....ahhh bullshit! !
I agree with this, Roman and crew. I understand Roman is busy but maybe you could get some additional benefit by making obtaining the CDL part of your content.
Also, great explanation of the benefits of the functional hood scoop by the engineer.
Hey Contreras, what the hell is ignorant about stating a fact, you don't have to be a lawyer to figure out if you do a job you should have the proper credentials and calling people clowns that show's your ignorant,so maybe you should show a little class yourself and keep your mouth shut Ahole
Is there a different spring rate for diesel vs gas both 3500?
What about 3500 DRW vs SRW springs?
Roman, if you had the choice of buying either a Ram 2500, Chevy 2500 or a Ford F-250, which would you buy?
whats up with the gas motor any updates to it? are they dropping the 6.2 in
It all depends on how much weight you are towing. I did the math on a JCB 100b mini excavator, and if I did it right, I can tow it with a single cab 3500 dually and an aluminum gooseneck trailer with the right axles. I need aluminum for the extra 2000lbs saved in the trailer weight.
I saw a horrible accident the other day, it was a duramax towing a fully loaded with gear 5th wheel camper. I estimate around 20k with all the gear, he got into a head on Collison with a bobtail fuel truck. I pulled over and talked to the driver, his truck came apart from the trailer and he flipped 3-4 times. Walked away from it with a few scratches.
Have a 2500 06 duramax trading up to a 19 3500drw. My 2500 pulls our 35' tt well enough but lacks in payload. I want to be able to install a 800lb steel dump insert and still have the capacity to put 2 ton of stone in it. Cant do that woth a srw
Suddenly curious how much difference there actually =would be between a dually and a single rear wheel with a wider rear track, essentially a dually with the inner tires removed. Of course the dually also brings redundancy, but I can't help but suspect the real difference for the drive in is the wider track.
so do i need a dually when towing i don't think they answered the question or did i just miss it lol?
Love the videos but wish you did 5th wheel towing comparisons as well. Most, many of those I see, are getting into these luxury diesels to tow the toyu hauler or 5th wheel camping trailers, not an excavator. Those are buying the work truck or SL
Hey guys! when we will see the small white frontier ike gauntlet?
I have pulled many a trailer with heavy loads and there is no comparison the duals are a lot more stable
He mentioned he did not have a commercial license to tow the rig. Need of commercial license is based on a weight and length of what you tow ? Can anyone explain that for me ?
First, Sorry to hear about Mr.Trucks wife. My deepest condolences. Second, Roman no CDL? Really dude, you are operating a professional auto car/truck channel, your entire professional team should be equipped with the tools for the job. Third, please ask these GM reps that even though they think people won't use the capacity of 30,000lbs, who would want to buy a lesser capacity truck for the same or even more price? If all 3 brands had to pass the same test to for load ratings, that tells me GM couldn't pass the same test as Ford & Ram. Just my two cents. Love the truck videos!
thegreatga That's weird, because whenever I see people doing commercial work with pickups. I always see Rams and Fords.
Thanks for the comment.
Let's not forget, at 22,300 pounds the Chevy did better going up the ike gauntlet than the ford and dodge. Why throw a stupid rating if you can tow it but can't handle it. Really, my 08 duramax does 25k pounds better than my buddies 2017 ford 3500. I'd anything, like always, gm under rates their product instead of overselling so people aren't disappointed when they go higher than they should.
RacingRocks12 buy a cummins please better engine
Thanks
I know I'll take a lot of flack for this but no light duty pickup (3500 or less) should be towing anything near 30000lb. That's what medium duty trucks are for.
Eric Gilbertson Sr 100% agree.
Just because you say so?
Thanks for your completely unsubstantiated opinion that nobody asked for. Next time I suggest providing some facts or evidence to support your claims. Otherwise, nobody has any reason to take what you say seriously.
I agree. I have a 2500 diesel that pulls a 9000K trailer with no problem daily but I would never want it to pull thrice that daily. It stresses it out way too much.
You have to be much more carful than you would be with a medium duty
Flac flac flac flac flac Aflac!!😆
Fyi. In my state, as typical in many other states, any trailer weighing 10,001 lbs or more and a CDL class A licenses is needed. So in your example with the 2500 and the 10,000 lbs pound mini excavator you would need a commercial license
The dual rear wheels in pick up trucks 3.5 ton all : 0.7g the lowest traction, extreme tail flick, extreme slide, 20 l/100km, over 100 l/100km with F1 speed test standard.

Serious question, why are they rated so much lower than Ram or Ford? Weaker springs, frame, axles?
Both the 2500 and 3500 are awesome hotshot trucks we have a Chevy 2500 extended cab long bed a Chevy 1500 extended cab short bed a Chevy Astro Cargo Van and a GMC Envoy XL all 4 are awesome tow vehicles the Chevy Astro Cargo Van and the GMC Envoy XL have the same Setup as a Chevy Silverado 1500 / GMC Sierra 1500
Roman, haven't you already asked a chevy design engineer why they wouldn't build a truck rated at 30,000 lb towing capacity?? And this engineer literally answered in the same manner that the market is in the lower 20K range instead??

I still would have gone for towing numbers. those that need higher towing will go for a different brand which is actually hurting gm's sales numbers .
Ext cab dually fullsize bed?
Chevy is changing there design to rapidly who agrees?
what country is that 35G made in?
Our limit in Maryland is 26,000 lbs before you need commercial. I would be able to drive that.
Back of my license says gvwr 26,000lbs
Before I got my CDL, it said Single/Combination < 26,001 and now it says Combination > 26,000 / Tow > 10,000.
I don't know why they call out the >10k tow specifically if you can go higher without the Class A anyway.
Dunkinuts
Max gvwr allowable without a cdl is 26,000lbs. However this truck and trailer combo would have a gvwr of at least 32,000 because the truck gvwr is over 10,000. It doesn't matter how much it weighs just how much it could weigh.
ANY trailer, regardless of the truck, that has a gross of over 10,000 you need a CDL.
That is just on the road right not on private property because we tow around 30,000 regularly
My dad has a Durmax 2500 white
Good bye LML Duramax, hello L5P Duramax
So.....Never got the verdict. Single wheel or dually?
Can I convert my 2500 Silverado into a dually?
Ram you can get a 2500 dually manual transmission as well.
I like how the guy who DOES have the commercial drivers license just so happens to be the chief engineer for Chevy trucks🙄
Tommy Perez That's okay he's Roman's "friend."
Totally legit.
QUESTION. So I have a 1500HD from 03 that’s rated to tow 10,000 and recently I towed my friend’s car which was 4,000 lbs and the trailer was a little over 3,000 lbs and my truck did the job no problem. But I did test out the tow/haul mode and I didn’t feel ANY difference in performance. Needless to say my truck pulled that trailer like it wasn’t pulling anything at all. So I just wanted to know what tow/haul mode is SUPPOSED to do?
Daniel Rocha-Garcia
The Tow/Haul mode keeps your transmission in the lower gears for a longer time between shifting to the next higher gear while the vehicle builds up speed.
It is most noticeable when you accelerate while towing a heavy load from a stopped position or while climbing up hill or trying to pass another vehicle while towing a loaded trailer.
I also noticed on my 08 GMC 2500 HD Duramax that the breaking is automatically assisted by the engine brake and is much more efficient, while going down hill with a load.
To Mr. Eric Stanczak: I believe having the 6.6 liter Duramax diesel engine as a viable option for the Denali Yukon XL, Denali Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon, Suburban, Tahoe, Escalade ESV and the Escalade models would be more beneficial for the aforementioned owners than the anemic 3.0 Duramax powerplant, who happen to also tow/haul and plow with said vehicles. At least make it an option, yielding a win-win situation for GM and applicable owners/drivers in lieu of turning to aftermarket fabricators/installers.
Wow, over 440 HP. My LB7 makes 300 HP.
Why do you need a CDL for this again?
I see these BIG-TEX Trailer every were.i bought one just cuz are popular.
I have some front end loader tires you can use to pull. And a new 2016 3500 Denali dually. Put me in a video and I bring u some tires
The dual wheel pick up trucks 3.5 ton all : 0.7g the lowest traction, extreme tail flick, extreme slide, 20-100 l/100km, over 100 l/100km in F1 speed test standard.
End report.

Wish I could justify buying a new dually but my current 2005 only has 36,000 miles on it. Comes with working overseas all the time I guess.
That's funny. He said they don't care about matching Ford and Ram on towing in 2017 and now the 2020 tows 35000 lbs.
Can you still get a 3500 single wheel??
Roscoe Dogg thanks
I watched all the reviews..im not biased and I was leaning more toward Cummins...but I didn't like outside appearance, also, I didn't like the way it "searched" for a gear while driving..I wound up getting the 2017 duramax and I am very pleased so far...but then again its new so we will see.... LTZ loaded out 4500 miles (demo) and I paid 59K was another reason I opted for this truck...Ford forget about it..lol very expensive but very very nice trucks...
I'm not the professional here but that backhoe parked way in front of the trailer axles looks absolutely terrifying. At least put the rear backhoe axle on the front axle of the trailer. I can just feel the trailer bucking on the goose now...
Whoever loaded the backhoe on the trailer must work in the office because that’s not where the load is proportional
Ford and Dodge owners with 300000 lb limit got the trailer the boat the ATV and dirt bike trailers pulling triples and that's scary without a cdl
Roman why don't you get your CDL?
Never mind I read the comment below, not enough time in the day besides regular work duties to get his CDL.
Can tow so much more than 23k put 30k on it like ram and ford and it’ll perform just as well
back in 2004-5 my dad had a i think it was an LB7 crewcab dually, could’ve been an LLY not sure, anyways he had a 4x4 shop and used the truck to tow a 45ft gooseneck loaded with 3 rigs and a couple atvs on the tail. It weighed in at well over 30,000lbs, so yes these trucks can tow much more than what there rated at, its not like if you go 1 lb over the rating your truck will just magically stop working lol
I don't understand how GM's towing capacities have such lower numbers when their engine numbers are in line or better than Ram and Ford. Are the numbers GM puts out, just the best tolerated and safest max, because I feel as though you could tow more than they say.
Please go back to these types of videos
You can't make a legit video with legit opinions when you put a Chevy employee in the driver seat. Whole video looses credibility.
Why? Just because you say so? Are you not interested in what the manufacturers have to say?
can you guys do this with the Ram 2500, 3500 and 3500 dually as well ?!
We will try. Thanks for the suggestion.
On that topic, can you please try to do the same thing with ford f250, 350, and 350 dually?
The Fast Lane Truck make it happen please
Stanley Tam no one cares about Ford
It would be cool to do the regular cabs also. most guys do not need the big 4 door trucks for the work they do. thanks.
2016
my ecoboost on my f150 just blew up it's cheaper to put a raptor motor in it soooooooooo
I’m a little late, but what went wrong?
