I remember hearing that he emersed himself in this kind of escapism in his young adult life, partly to get away from the traumatic experience of losing his father and two brothers in an airplane crash.

You can really know he's such a Tolkien nerd because I myself pretty much know the lore since I read Tolkien's work but Stephen knows everything in such detail.

I think its the best collection of stories in Middle Earth, my only beef is The Children of Hurin is in the Silmarillian, repeated again in the unfinished tales and even has its own book. I could read the story of Beren and Luthien until the day I die, but Narn I Hin Hurin for some reason I don't understand really grates me
