I love this info about the rhyme scheme, but Colbert doesn't even touch on the content. In '92 the classic album The Chronic by Dre dropped and it was right in the middle of the Bull's 3peat. Plus the album is Acid Rap and he says "Chance on acid now, crusin' on that LSD" which is means acid but is also a reference to Lake Shore Drive
Phillip Monk And what's so special about this content? Why would he even talk about that? It add nothing to the subject and it doesn't have any meaning in the context of what he's talking about. It's not particularly clever or special either.
ohmytin dude I was talking about the content as in the lyrics which OP Phillip said he didn’t talk about in the video like he’s implying that there was something to talk about. The lyrics are not clever not the content of this video, this if fucking clever. Did you not see that my comment was an answer to something?
Damn it, Colbert! Everytime I think: "My love for him could not possibly grow stronger" - he do stuff like this. For the first time in my life, I love a man more the more I learn about him.
I admire his intellect, but I adore his immense empathy and kindness. Watch any interview with him when he's not in "entertainment modus" and the sincerity, insight and kindness radiating from him is so heartwarming. Then interview he did at Christmas 2016 is an example of this: ruclips.net/video/pf-BpvfTSKQ/видео.html. I think since he experienced so much grief and pain as a child, he is very sensitive to other people's pain. What a lovely man!
Works for me, then he could do it in his bathrobe and nobody would know! I tweeted at him to start this, so everyone else should too maybe he'll take it seriously :) Just wishful thinking over here.
Wow. Just wow. As many others are also saying, I think I'm at max Colbert adoration, and he goes and does something completely out of left field and it gets deeper. Thanks Rolling Stone! Thanks Mr. Colbert!
interviewer after showing this clip: Chance, how'd you write Favorite Song Chance: "trapped in the middle of the map//with a little bitty rock and a little bit of rap//that with a literary knack// and a little shitty Mac//and like literally jack"
This guy is incredible. Knows LOTR, retro and current pop culture, Hosts a late night show, has time to read entire books, and looks good doing it. I gotta step my game up.
eärendil’s song as written by bilbo baggins the correct line is “he built a boat from timber felled in nimbrethil to JOURNEY in” not to *SAIL HER* in. but yeah. this video is AMAZING!
I think this comment sums up almost all of the comments here....no one has checked to see if Colbert is being accurate or not (he's not) they're just claiming that it's genius.....whatever I guess.
@@fygtree how are you not being accurate when you connected and demonstrated your claim? He showed that the rhymes' syllables follow the same quantitative iamb and meter in poetry- it's like an iambic tetrameter inside of a single line of a verse
This is simply brilliant. I was on a Tolkien search and this video shows up and I am like what does Colbert have to contribute to this and then I watched him break it down. And then I had to watch 2 more times in amazement. Then I had to have my wife watch it. He is just amazing…
There is an excellent series of books about how Tolkien wrote The Silmarillion and LoTR. It's the History of Middle Earth. Tons of obscure writings and drafts compiled by JRR's son, Christopher. Also there is an amazing podcast by The Tolkien Professor that covers all that material. Everything Colbert said is covered in these podcasts. Did you know that Strider was originally a hobbit with wooden feet named Trotter and that Frodo was to be called Bingo!?
Just when mine love for Mssr. Colbert could climb no higher...he gives us this. ❤ "His nimble wit doth spring forth anew, with bedazzling words of heft and hue..." 🍃🍂🍃 C. - 2018
Took me too long to realise this but i love how he's like "i'm gonna breakdown a verse in chance the rapper's song" and instead was like "lemme tell you about this cool book i know called the lord of the rings"
if anyone else started talking about Middleearth and LotR and Tolkien as often as he does, I'd be like 'omg just shut the f***k up'. When it's Stephen Colbert I'm like 'please never stop talking about this'

What's even crazier is that Earendel was the Old English version of Aurvandil/Horwendil, from Proto-Germanic *Auziwandilaz (dawn-wanderer), which was the original name of the Jutish prince Amleth's father, which formed the legendary basis for Shakespeare's Hamlet
Whenever people say "Colbert sucks/is a sellout/not as funny as when he was a parody character on the Colbert Report" I go back to this video and think - Colbert is still a smart, brilliant and (nerdy) cool dude. This and the D&D video with Matt Mercer are great!
There is no end to the depth of Colbert’s nerdiness. It’s like a bottomless pit that once you think your near the end of it, it just keeps going on and on.
Earendil the Mariner, my favorite Tolkien character. Followed by; his sons Elrond and Elros, the first few kings of Numenore, Aragorn, Elendil II, Gandalf, Boromir, Faramir, Theoden, and Tar-Palantir.
Colbert is f***ing brilliant.

I can no longer call myself a nerd.. I'm not worthy👋👋👋👋👋👋
*Hearing Colbert spit Chance's verse causes pure audiophile satisfaction. And it makes me extremely happy to know he likes that song*
Especially since his voice is this really nice timbre
@@nicolesong6199 Do you mean timber? like the one earendil felled?
Wouldn't it be amazing if Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino teamed up with Stephen Colbert to do a rap version of the Song of Eärendil?
nah bro that shit would be wack as hell
Dude, I need that now
Phil Henderson that’d be fucking awesome. You’re genius
Phil Henderson No.

Trump makes new jokes every darned day buddy. Colbert just tells them.

Stephen needs a separate "Talking Tolkien" show. :)
yeah he does
I'D WATCH IT!!!!!

tonematrix or maybe just a podcast

*Genius should hire Stephen Colbert.*
Every song will be connected to LOTR 😂
It’d be better than the garbage show he currently hosts
MrCTruck Sad salty sack.
Nicky Chan What?
yes
This guy's brain is next level
exactly what I was thinking
Too bad he only uses it for entertainment
Yes! He is a fun human being. His brain works
Saw him at Second City in the 90's. He as next level back then too. There was some other guy named Steve too.

THIS IS BRILLIANT
I didn't think I could like Colbert any more than I already do... He just proved me wrong!
Can Stephen do a recurring internet show or something that is solely about LOTR???
it's what the people want
moiraine_damodred it’s what the people need
It is known.
Why are my tax dollars not funding this???????
This would be the number 1 podcast. Stephen with Tolkien based guests discussing their favorite parts about the lore and history.
+Chris Pole omfg yes it would. Holy shit. I hope Stephen sees this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just take my entire heart
Too far. How about a kidney for starters?
Colbert is f****ng amazing. I had to replay it. I like it a lot.
