- If it's winter where you are and the central heating pump has stopped working, then it's time to take action and do this easy temporary fix to get you warm again.

I had one that wasn't pumping but turned quite freely. I was all set to replace it but, on testing, it was clear the windings were still OK and it was simply the capacitor that had died. Interestingly they print the value(2uF in your case) on the label. It's easy to replace so long as you get one that is physically the right size. Its a motor run capacitor and is typically rated at 450vac available in loads of places.

Mine's still working, so try this trick a few times before replacing the pump.

This has literally just got me going again! Thanks, although probably means I need to start saving for a new one. Or maybe as it's 2022, I'll be better off not having the heating on at all ☹️
I did that for 3 years before I had to change it.
Nice one - had the same issue , knew what to do from this video and a plumber confirmed on the phone good to try on my system - it worked, hopefully a one off . Apparently blockages in the feed pipe can cause issues like this too
Thanks so much! i tried your method and it worked! although it was a struggle to get the piece to rotate and half of it snapped off! its seems to be running the motor now and heating working fine.
I wouldn't say you need special tools. Just a couple of flat bladed screwdrivers of the right width.

I could hear the sediment when u started the pump. Maybe your strainer/filter needs to be more frequently maintained ;)
Crikey 15 years! Had a British Gas / Worcester Bosh boiler pump replaced and it's gone again in only 3 years! Died after Cadent dug up the gas mains and was off for only a few days!

My radiators were not warming up about a month ago, so had to call a plumber who fixed it in 10 minutes, however the radiators stopped heating up again a few days ago, so I did what u have showed in your video.The radiators are working fine at the moment, however just wanted, to ask u if the pump is always hot when the central heating is working. Mine is very hot at the moment.Thanks.
Mine (the same one) is only warm, even though the heater is on and pumping. Try lowering the thermostat at the wall so that the heater is not on. Leave it a while for your radiators to cool down then check the pump again. If it is still hot even though the water has cooled off then your pump is faulty.

Do the least destructive checks first....turn off power to all units including the wall controller. Turn back on and check. Next try selecting no central heating on by turning down by dialing the temperature dial down to say 5C...if the pump is still coming on, then the control box on the wall where cables enter the pump is faulty....get an electrician to change the box. Observe the electrician turn off the power to the digital unit that has cables going to the pump by going to your home's main fuse box and flipping or pressing the button on the pertinent fuse off before the electrician works on removing the controller.

Hi Sir, can you please help. We have run out of money and boiler decided to break. Bleed the radiators a couple of days ago and since then the radiators are working absolutely perfect but we have no hot water. Boiler is an old Halstead Buckingham III CF50 with the same pump installed. On water I don’t hear / feel any sound or noise or movement within the pump however when I turn on only heating then I can feel and hear some vibrations and movements within the pump. Can you please help. At the moment we are heating our space with boiler and using electricity to heat the water cylinder. Please help and save. Thank you
I hope I can help. Pause the video at 8 seconds. You will see a small white box where the three copper pipes converge. That unit selects either hot water or heating or both at the same time. Remove the cover and really the whole unit for now and rotate the valves by hand. What has happened is that unit is broken and stuck on heating only. The unit is about £20 new. I have floor heating on the ground floor, from the pipes from the floor heating system were hot, everything looked fine,
- radiators on the 1st and 2nd floor were working properly extremely hot. 22 degrees room temperature
but floor heating on ground floor was not working properly (ice box) 15 degrees. I opened the Grundfos Selectric Central Heating Pump and opened up the little screw and closed it again with the bigger screw in the hope it was getting warmer in the room I have put the room thermostat on 23,5 degrees
But after 45 minutes the ground is still cold any idea's ?
Sludge has built up and sunk to the lower floors, or pump is weak, try turning the pumps power up to notch 3.
@@EducationPineapple Al working again I removed the screw on the pump and it seems the pin was stuck behind the screw and closed it up again all working again
Brilliant video. If I ever drain down my system, the pump ALWAYS makes a humming noise, and the boiler stops working, despite clearing all the air from all the bleeds, and all the rads. Really frustrating. Any ideas what it could be? Cheers.
I did this technique for about 5 years until I had to change the pump. I have another video on how I changed the pump very quickly. It could be that your pump has failed. It could be also that the valves are closed...or partially closed...see my other video '...change Grundos pump...' because the stop valves above and below the pump works by being on if handle to valve is on when pointing North South, but is off when the valves are pointing East/ west....if you get what I mean.
@@EducationPineapple thank you so much for the reply. I don't actually get it, but as soon as I watch the other vid, I will. Every time this has happened to me after draining the system down. I think it is that the screw inside needs slackening off after draining. It seems to coincidental that the pump fails every time. I only used to bleed the pump after draining, not undo the little screw inside. I'll let you know what happens 👍🏽
@@MohammedAli-1 it means if you turn the water shut off valves 90degrees it will be off, another 90 degrees and it will be back on, so check you haven't shut the water off at the water shut off valves.

my pump got extremely hot and it's not circulating, will your method work if pumps is extremely hot? maybe winding shorted?

Could i use a pump like this to boost water upto a radiator in a loft? (Converted). But put it away from the boiler so its on the vertical that goes up from the bathroom? Or are these best placed next to the boiler itself?

I think protecting the boiler is more important, so if the pump was located elsewhere and further away from the boiler the efficiency of the water flow going through the pump could be effected though it is factual that water is generally considered incompressible. Think of your own heart...it is pumping blood all around your body but your toes tend to get issues if your heart becomes weaker. I think the easiest solution in your case is either switch the little switch on the side of the pump to number 3 abs see if that works, or simply install a higher rated pump that can deal with pumping up a negative head. Search for shower pumps as a way to educate yourself on negative heads because some shower pumps cannot pump up negatively. I would say just choose a very high pressure rated pump.

Filter may need cleaning. The pump just needs turning a little. Haven't changed my pump yet.

Yes but the important thing is which way the water flows to match your system.

Thanks. It turns freely but no joy. I have lights on the side which aren't on, so suspect I may have another issue. Mine is part of an underfloor heating system the wiring box is sending and receiving ok. Any tips for what to try next please? 🙏
Least destructive method possible which is to check the fuse hasn't blown.
Hello! Can anyone help me with my issue? Namely, from some reason, heating is not working, and I tried to check the pump, by unscrewing the cap as in this video (to try to start it manually by screwing the inside screw), but when I removed the cap on the pump, water started to come out in the stream. I closed it quickly, as pressure started to go down. Is it normal thing? Do I need to ignore the water stream and to try quickly to unscrew the screw inside the pump to check if it is jammed?
Yes ignore the water and try to spin the pump like in the video
Ok, I will try again. I've just checked and noticed that I can hear the pump, when I put it on. But if I can hear, does it mean that it works correctly? Or to try to roll it anyway...?
May l please ask for your help, my largest radiator was cold at the bottom, so removed it flushed it thru and refilled it, bled it & added inhibitor. It is still cold at the bottom but so are all of my others radiators. Water pipe going in hot, but exit valve cold. (It is fully open). Could it be the pump? Thank you so much.
There's a switch on gringos pump...select l...ll...or lll. Try selection full power lll ..it does sound like your pump is weak

No unless you think the small amount of dripping water for the 1 minute job will cause a problem

Stick to the approved versions of these. Ask at a plumbers outlet for their advice what's best if changing heaters

That means no air left. That is good, so now tighten the screw after you free the turning rotor.
Would the fault that you fixed in this video cause the fuse in the switch to pop ?

I know this is an old post, my Grant combi 90 mk 2 ,( outdoor oil fed boiler) keeps tripping out the burner........ im getting no noise at all from the pump even after opening the screw, turning the impellers (which seemed to have a lot of play like a worn out turbo on a car).... would you from your experience say the pump is goosed? The boiler was imstalled 2006 if that helps and is the original pump...... hot water diverter valve and hot water blender valve changed 18 momths ago and secondary heat exchanger changed at same time...any advice?

Did you turn off both isolation valves ,one above and one below before undoing the central bleeding screw to get at the fin retaining screw inside , ? Thanks

Do you need to turn off the water and drain the line before you take off that outer screw??
Oh no you do not have to turn the water off or drain the tank to do that. There is a tiny bit of water that comes out from the sealed unit, which is normal.
