When you snell a hook onto your leader you are passing the leader through the eye of the hook and wrapping it around the shank. While there are many ways to tie a snell, Captain Tim and myself prefer this method as it is easy and extremely strong. This works on all size hooks and target species. We hope this video helps you catch more big fish and if you have any questions, please comment below.
Tight Lines,
Captain Mike

So as a person that is obsessed with tying knots. I am a mountain and rescue expert and lifelong fisherman. I have seen hundreds maybe thousands of knot tying vids and demos. This guy did the absolute best job of showing how to tie a knot. Cudos to him and the video guy.
already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ruclips.net/user/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
I love watching this channels vids this guy deserves more credit for his hard work!
I am going to retire next year. I used to go fishing a lot with my son until he was K.I.A. in the Navy in Iraq in '03. I want to get back into fishing again for my retirement. Thank you so very much for teaching me a few things. Wherever there is a lake, I'll be there.
Thank you for the quick response and a Happy and Blessed New Year to You and your family.
Awesome video man! I’m targeting river grouper this weekend going to set up some snow old hooks tonight! Thanks Captain Mike
In NJ it's called a "power snell". This knot will also prevent the line from fraying/breaking where the line rubs against the rough edge of the opening in the eye. It keeps line centered in the eye by tying to the shank of the hook.
Thanks, Great Video!
Great great video. Thanks again. 😎
Thank you for this video finally i found a way to make a clean snell knot every time
Thanks for tuning it. Catch em up.
Good job showing everyone this👍🏼.....also it’s not just for big line (leaders) and hooks... I use it all the way down to 8 lbs test and also open style hooks... good fishing to you’all !
Great video captain Tim!
Good tutorial guys, thank you.
Nice! Thank You.
Great Tutorial ! I definitely have to try this knot!
Thank you Kevin, It is a very strong knot and as you can see simple to tie.
Thank you for the video
Thank for your sharing!
Great tutorial.
Thanks
I like this one the best!
Ty brother!
Thanks! I fish on others boats and am still learning rigging, much more to learn.
Kevin
thank you capt tim
Thank you
Nice video 👍
Very helpful video thank you ..do you need to moisten the line any before tightening
GOOD JOB MATE IAM WATCHING FROM AUSTRALIA TIGHT LINES 🇦🇺 🙂 👍
Outstanding
It's a uni knot around the line and hook. Thanks!
Thank you very much/
Would you prefer the snell over a loop knot when live baiting small white baits also? Or mainly slow trolling big mullet? Wondering if it prevents small baits from having more natural presentations? Also what length top shot of mono? Love the videos Capt! Keep them coming
Very nice, will try a double for snappers
It's annoying that a lot of these videos for tying knots, when it comes to making a video, they use clear/invisible line to show the viewer. I find myself straining to see the small details, to learn it right. Use a thicker, darker, visible string with a contrasting background for the viewer to make sure he learns it right. That's the purpose of the video, RIGHT ???
Basically a uni knot on the shank of the hook.
Yep , been doing like that for years
Ive been tying loop knots to my hook for snook. No wonder my hook up ratio is bad. I thought i had to use loop for live bait snook. Just nebie question though. Does that hinder the action of the bait
Perfec
Which rod and reel best in shore fishing in sea....?
Hello Captain, great video as always! Can you please let me know the name of the rod and reel that captain Tim had and explain to me how much top-shot mono he puts on his reels. Just trying to learn. I hope these are shimano TLD’s because I do have a few of those. Nice setup. Nice video. Thank you!
JP - The reel is a Shimano TLD 15 which of all the sizes is the easiest to cast so it makes a great all purpose reel. And the rod is a custom 20-30lb 8 footer by Chaos Rods with a soft tip for slinging mullet far. He put 300 yards of braid and filled the rest with 30lb mono, so he got about 100 yards of mono on there. Check out our video on "Tarpon Rod and Reel" for more.
thats a good knot for larrge hooks and lines but for 2/0 snell works just fine
Hi Captain what rod and reel was that setup. Thanks for all the great knowledgeable videos you have been putting out much appreciate
That is a Shimano TLD15 on a custom Chaos rod. Check out our “tarpon rod and reel” video.
ReelReports thanks captain i will check it out thank you
That looks like a good reel - what kind is it (with the lever drag) ?
Shimano TLD15
I just feed the line through the eye, pinch down at the lower end of the hook, and then make my 6 loops around. When you're done theres a loop where you pinched and you feed the tag end through that and pull tight. Much easier
What song is that right @ 34 seconds in?
Great video. Kindly What brand of pliers were used on this video ?
Manley 6' pliers
what does he mean by "snelled eye"?
The circle hook needs to match the thickness of the side of the jaw of the target species. There must be clearance between the point and the shank to fit around the jaw and it can not be too wide, or you will miss a lot of fish. Too much bait will make them ineffective.
What is the purpose of the top-shot of mono? Is it for casting?
Stretch
Solid Video.. Big Fan... Who knows maybe we can collab on project in the future .. INRL I am videographer who films sporting events! ;)
This is the best snell video I’ve seen.
Thanks, Lee. We're glad that it helps.
How does snell dude join mono leader to braid, that could be important to know.
I only use braid for backing with a mono top shot. I join the braid to mono with a uni-to-uni knot.
@@timoconnor9979 try the improved Albright
I do it a lot different ...like a knot less knot
Basically a uni knot snell
Uní knot?
So a uni knot snell, seems so simple
Be nice if I could see it
Use color line
literally the hardest way ive seen to tie this snell. go in through the back, wrap around the hook and back in through the back..horrible, this video had me going back and testing my method vs this. This snell should take about 30 seconds to tie if youre not on a boat, this method takes 5 minutes -_-
Chunky bait on full display :53
I’m sure he’s an expert but that was too fast too invisible too much movement and too far away to learn from :(
To do a best snell knot, you need a tube, like if you know what im talking about
wtf! lol
Uni knot snelll*
NOT CLEAR.. WHT. LINE WHT GROUND VERY FAST
He's a real fart sneller
Can be done much faster and easier, sorry but fact.
How the hell do you make a 12 minute video for 30 second knot? LMFAO
Rancidclown very carefully
They make fishing sound too complicated. I caught a 50lb tarpon on a 5 foot spinner loaded with a 10lb test mono. All these fancy gear nowadays taking the fun outta simple fishing
Berxamag being a prepper is 3/4 of the fun , prep 3 days for every 1 day fishing 🤓
no need for all that
Poor presentation
It is not well visible. Use colored line
and go slow
and show it close.
Not a well done video, I can't see anything. Watch Darcizzle tie a snell, she's using thick colored cord and a huge hook, very easy to see what she's doing.
Geez...not one of the best demos for sure - no visibility.
