Your second knot is not the Uni Knot. It's a snell knot. The picture is the Uni Knot but not the one your tying. Your wraps did not go thru the loop but around the shank & your doubled up line.
already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). ruclips.net/user/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.
You answered my question is why not use a Trilene knot for the trailing hook. Could just use a straight shank hook as a trailer & tie it as a Trilene. Really like the Uni Snell; wish you would have shown that as a double Uni Snell. Thank you much!😊😊😊
The knotless knot & the uni both have 1 disadvantage. They both have the line outside the wraps of the shank which for toothy fish risks cutting the line that is exposed b4 it passes through eye & continues toward mainline. A true has the line protected by the wraps & is very simple. All you need to do is twist it as you wrap around the shank, get your 7 or so wraps completed then pull slack up through the eye. Its a far superior knot and requires little more skill research true snell & you will be sold on it.
Cool video. I remember being thought the knot less Snell technique from my uncles as a child when they'd go night fishing for Giant Travales( Ulua) here in Hawaii. I'm starting to do more beach fishing with live baits so I'll be using a Snell knot and circle hooks more often. I'll be using the more conventional Snell knot, but it was cool to see it again in this video.
I use the knotless snell knot in Hawaii. Done right, there is virtually no friction to the line when you finish the knot which is the whole purpose of using this knot. Keep the wraps tight from the beginning.
I use the first one the knotless knot for all my catfishing, it's easy and fast and actually stronger then other snell knots cause it is a knotless knot and instead the line binds onto itself making it stronger because there are no pinch points.
There is an exposed vertical line after making a return thru' the hole and it may snapped. Vertical line should hide in side when going round and round, definitely looks neat.
Yes you can snell those. The up turned eyes are made for snelling the hook and you can also on the downward eyes. And it doesn't matter if it's offset or not. You can snell just about any hook.
you made the uni snell wrong if you follow the pic you need to make the wraps through the loop not around it like you done, that is a different method but still works i suppose
Your Uni-knot snell is incorrect even by your diagram - the tag line doesn't get wrapped around the loop and the shank then brought through the loop at the bottom; it gets wrapped around the shank inside the the loop then back out of the loop.
Not a big fan of the first way I know it's the simplest and will work but depending on what you're fishing for the uni knot over the shank is the way to go. As you showed.
The first knot is what a lot of big cat fishermen use. They pull in sixty up to ninety pound blue cats, and big flatheads without the knot failing. I use it also and have never had a knot failure.
Jeff Smith okay, disregarding that second pic is not the one he did. Whatever the second one he tied is called...I have had these let go on me. Real bummer when someone else loses a fish on a knot I tied. There seems to be a trick to snugging the snell up at the end.
@@stillwater62 interesting I wouldn't think it would be a popular way to tie it for big fish. I don't do a ton of catfishing in particular I mainly fish in saltwater but my thoughts on knots are whatever you're confident tying is the best knot for you.
@@jeffsmith825 I understand where you are coming from. There is NO one perfect knot, if their was, we wouldn`t need the others. Different knots have their place in different situations, and with different tackle. It is up to the fisherman to understand this, and apply it correctly.
If you tie it correctly it will hold. I do 11 wraps on 50lb and down. Above that, no snell. Also, a very tiny dab of super glue on the last wrap doesn't hurt.
I worry that these ways to tie can create angular binding points in the knot causing it to weaken itself. I have learned to tie a non-binding snell with a "whip finish" style snell from fly tying. I use this in the Pacific NW for salmon and steelhead with nary a break at the hook. The result is almost exactly as a nail knot without the nail. And, by snugging down the knot just before the hook bend you can then create a "bait loop" with the bare standing end from knot to eye. By increasing the amount of leader coming off the base of the knot, I have taught myself to tie double hook rigs as well with the whip finish. Here is a link to another person showing this on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/V9tjpjMiCGE/видео.html FISH ON everyone!!
yeah but for that one you need to cut a new section of leader and make two knots instead of simply using the tag end of a leader using the uni snell knot
@@mrBDeye only snell knot i know so far that uses end of the leader is the uni knot snell if you got another kind please put a link for vid description
Pull hard on that uni knot snell a few times. If you tie it as shown on the disgram, it is an incredibly weak knot! Test it and you will never use it again.
@millionmanification Like I was saying, there are better stronger knots than snell out there. Fish n Fool and Palomar in that order. Are you saying to use a snell on a hook for hooking performance? Not as in superior knot strength?

yup he made his wraps around the loop instead of through it
For real… what he did was not the uni wtf? Christ.
I thought the same thing. I had to watch the video 4 times to make sure. Came the comments to make sure I wasn't crazy.
The second half ne also isn’t a snell. Ina. Traditional snell the tag goes back through the loop before wrapping

I have used snell hook and has never failed. I would just add to put on leather gloves and set hook to make sure of your knot. great vid, thx. Chris
I was thinking the same thing. I learned that from tying fg knots.

Yeah the second picture was the normal smell, but actually tied was the simple snell.
Hey thanks, I had been using the knot less, it’s perfect, really thanks, great advice

awesome video. Thank you!
Your knot and that pic you had up were not the same knot
thanks I will point that out
first way to snell can come undone on big fish. Learned that the hard way. Nice video.
I'm confused. The chart you showed for the "Knotless Snell" is not what you tied starting around 1:40.
The uni snell that is shown in the video demonstration, isn't the same in the illustration.
Second picture you had was the uni snell knot but you did a different one, you did the snell knot.
True
It is more beneficial to the viewer if you use a dark background as you are Tying hooks. A dark T Shirt, or felt ect. Thanks for the demos.
Can you also snell hooks with _downward_ eye offset, or are those hooks meant to be tied directly to the eye?

Can we do the first knot on mono, fluoro, as well as on braid lines?
Do a reverse loop after the last wrap THEN go back up thru the eye.
Your Uni-knot snell is incorrect even by your diagram - the tag line doesn't get wrapped around the loop and the shank then brought through the loop at the bottom; it gets wrapped around the shank inside the the loop then back out of the loop.
What’s a good way to hold the hook when tying the knot tight so you don’t chance getting the hook in your hand?
Depends on the size of the hook but handle of pliers or knife will do the trick. Thanks for the question David!

The second knot tied is not the one in the diagram, the UNI.
Should always be wetting your knot before pulling tight .
I don't use any of these variations. My preferred is a traditional snell where the line is hidden under the wraps.

That white surface underneath wasn't actually a good choice. Apart from that nice video
First not useless after first time, if u loose your hook you can't tie that know again without cutting your leader off so dosent make sense
Nicely wrong.
The 2nd one is very fiddly
I don’t think you know why the engineers made the hook that way.
That's knot a uni-knot.
🤪
No barrels swivel just a Trilene knot to main line… and
Can’t see your line
The knotless snell is worthless. With large mono it easily comes untied....Your second photo is an obvious “cheat"....

Title of your video should be "How to snell a hook the lame way".
gonna post how to tie knots..do it right. diagrams are wrong. go back to your joint.
