    i just bought the Sirui. Thank you for making this video. I love Anamorphic and picked a old black magic ursa 4k ef. Getting an adapter to make this work.

    Interesting video and doubly interesting how subjective these preferences are. I would have sent the Moment one back assuming it was broken it's performance was so poor. Only the Sirui would be anywhere near my shopping list.

    Not a video guy but I have to say that I loved how you managed to subtly mix in the Vader breathing and Imperial March into the BGM at ~ 0:30 - 0:45 😁

    Hey Mathieu, another great video, thanks for taking the time, I had been wondering about anamorphic adaptors (since I cannot afford any cinelenses at the moment). The mask was REALLY cool btw, a little video on it would be cool. Also my friend, I took the plunge and am now supporting you on Patreon because to me you have the absolutely best channel on RUclips, every video is a production, good job.

    I know many want this anamorphic look but every time I see those lines or bloom or so, I think that the person forgot to clean the lense. Tbf bloom around candles looks quite nice but if it has these lense flares it just feels like as if someone smudget with fingers on the glass element. Even in cinemas, when the intentionally add flare in post, I think "CAN'T YOU CLEAN YOUR GEAR!?!".

    • @feederbrian9457
      @feederbrian9457 11 месяцев назад

      I agree. Flares are polarizing with audiences, and the amount is up to the taste of the cinematographer. I prefer minimal flaring with a neutral color profile.

    • @C.I...
      @C.I... 11 месяцев назад

      I love lens flares , but the "mist" filters are bizarre to me. If you wanted your image to look blurry, why did you use an expensive lens - just use a shit or dirty lens if you want a shit image!

    • @FelanLP
      @FelanLP 11 месяцев назад

      @@feederbrian9457 I think flare is good to comunicate overexposed settings or some stressed feelings. When stuff happens too fast and the visual look wants to "tell" the audience that the protagonist can't keep up with this information overload and so on.
      But that's the only scenarios I can think of where they might fit everything above that is an imperfection or flaw in the design of that lens. And these cine-lenses are notorious for this specific flaw. It's simply just a side effect of trying to squeeze a wider image onto a regular sensor format.

    • @FelanLP
      @FelanLP 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@C.I... Mist filters do not blur the image. It just makes them softer. Yes, it's a bit like having particles on your lense, because that's basically what a mist filter is and if you are not picky you could call this some sort of bluriness, but a cheap lense has other problems.
      And while a mist filter (tbf, depending on its intensity) just makes the skin look a bit softer in the details or makes lights actually glow and not appear as just a white spot, is a notoriously soft lens not capable of even sharply focusing on contrasty details in the first place.
      Aka there is a difference of being soft and not being sharp.

    Really nice and interesting video! I agree with both of you, the Moment is the "professional" one, with very nice and "well-behaving" flares and effects, but super sharp, while the Blazar is the more "fun" and "creative" one, giving much more character to the image, with stronger and different flares, while being less sharp, which also gives it a bit o character of its own... I only wish I had the money to buy both 😂

  • @chevonpetgrave4991
    @chevonpetgrave4991 6 месяцев назад +1

    Caveat. These characteristics will look completely different on a different lens/focal length and/or sensor size. I can confirm on
    Moment on with sigma art 35mm 1.4 and suiri on full frame S5 looks really different than the 90mm summicron.
    Moment Looks way more organic and layered on the 35mm with a super 35mm bmpcc 6K than this stronger sci fi triple streak looking flare here.
    Suiri hardly flares here on the Komodo super 35 sensor even at 90 mm while it gives a much more noticeable and defined yet still subtle flare on a full frame S5 at 40-60mm kind of like how the great joy looks in this video.

    Great comparison. I liked the 1.5x best to my eyes and what I'd like to see in the edit. The Moment's streaking was too strong. Is there a way to adjust any of the streaking effect (type, level of impact, etc) in the adapters?

    My experience is with the aivascope 1.5x, 1.75x… flairs change character depending on whether they are in focus or out; they change with the types of taking lenses and diffusion/ Polaroid/ nd /ir-cut filters.

    • @MathieuStern
      @MathieuStern  11 месяцев назад +1

      That is correct, a good adapter will give the lens the same look as a equivalent native anamorphic lens, and thats the interesting part because there are a lot of expensive anamorphic lenses that can't open more that F2

    What is the difference between using an anamorphic adapter and cropping the image? I mean all the adapter is doing is squeezing the image and creating different bokeh balls

    • @BlackWinterProduction
      @BlackWinterProduction 11 месяцев назад +1

      Anamorphic distortion and bokeh mean a lot for visual storytelling. Squeezing the image is non-linear and makes the foreground objects pop, while painterly bokeh, focus fall-off and optical vignette also enhance foreground/background separation, helping to focus the viewer's attention on the actor/main object in the scene.
