  • 60 FPS GoPro footage from US Spacewalk #30.
    This footage was taken by U.S. astronaut Terry Virts during two spacewalks (EVAs) on the International Space Station on February 25, 2015.
    On EVA #30, Virts and fellow astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore routed a series of cables in preparation for the arrival of two International Docking Adapters later in 2015. Virts also lubricated elements at the latching end of the space station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm while Wilmore prepares the Tranquility module for the relocation of the Permanent Multipurpose Module and the arrival of the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) later this year.

      Anything in orbit of a planet is caught by its gravitational pull. As long as the object has sufficient mass/power etc to counteract those forces from pulling it into the atmosphere and to the surface, it's much more akin to floating on the surface of a pool instead of free-falling. That's why astronaut students/trainees must undergo training in the sea! To mimic zero-gravity conditions.

    • @lazarus2691
      @lazarus2691 9 лет назад +7

      Gaeilgeoir
      actually, free falling is exactly what it is, as free-falling is just a suborbital trajectory, free-falling feels the same as being in orbit. the thing is that when sky divers free-fall they encounter aerodynamic drag, meaning they aren't truly accelerating with gravity, and are experiencing deceleration during their free-fall. if you were to perform a skydive on say, Mercury you would feel no different than someone who is in orbit.
      It would also likely be fatal :P

    For those scrolling down to the comments to ask why the camera is hearing so much noise:
    it isn't.
    Sound is a vibration, and with an atmosphere we can hear sounds because the air gets vibrated by things, like your vocal chords. What's happening here, given there's no air, is that the microphone is picking up vibrations instead of sound waves. Every impact or scratch to the camera itself is making the plastic shake, and the microphone picks up that vibration. Since it's made to transform vibrations into sound, you hear sound.
    You see the same thing happen whenever someone holding a microphone claps. Very loud thumps, even though the light clap they're doing doesn't make any noise. You can also feel the same thing happening if you put your hand up to your throat and say AAAAA to yourself at a normal volume.
    The camera isn't hearing noise. It's feeling it. In space, no-one can hear you scream, but they can feel your scream if they're touching you.
    Physics is neat!

    • @PGraveDigger1
      @PGraveDigger1 9 лет назад +6

      ***** "Sound is a vibration", "the microphone is picking up vibrations instead of sound waves". Seems a bit contradictory.
      As far as i know, sound travels not only through air, but through anything, including solid objects. So i think that the vibrations of those objects, that are picked up by de microphone, are soundwaves.

      ***** GoPro case is sealed and it has air inside.

    • @EdwardHowton
      @EdwardHowton 9 лет назад

      PGraveDigger1 Sound is a vibration in air. What the microphone is picking up is vibration in its casing. I was pretty clear about this. Quoting tiny parts of what I said and ignoring the whole is stupid. You can think that sound is *any* vibration, but you'd be wrong.
      "Sound is a vibration, and with an atmosphere we can hear sounds because the air gets vibrated by things, like your vocal chords"
      Your speakers work with an electromagnet surrounded by a coil of wire, with a membrane on one side. The speakers turn an electric signal into a back and forth motion in the membrane, which vibrates the air, which is what the sound is. Saying that the electromagnet moving back and forth is sound is stupid. It *produces* sound.

    • @EdwardHowton
      @EdwardHowton 9 лет назад +1

      PGraveDigger1 Again, dishonestly quoting only parts of what I said makes you a disingenuous sack of shit.
      "[...]the camera is hearing so much noise:
      it isn't."
      Picking up impacts on the casing isn't hearing noises. If I punch you in the face, it *makes* a noise in an atmosphere, whether it be air for us ("with an atmosphere *we* can hear sounds") or a liquid medium for whales, but the punch *is not itself* a noise. Are you done being an asshat yet?
      Maybe try reading everything I said and understanding it as a whole instead of nitpicking like a fucking little troll. Fuck's sake. I'll reiterate so you get it through your empty skull: PUNCHES ARE NOT A SOUND. PUNCHES MAKE SOUND. Fuck's sake.

    • @Eho419

      ***** Sound is a vibration of any gas, liquid or solid. Your understanding that sound need atmosphere is flawed.

    One of the coolest things about this is that when you look down, Everything that has been born, lived, died, all the wars, all of our petty conflicts and thievery, our relationships, our everything has happened there. Everything. And when you look down you realize that all of that is for what, a little space of land on one of millions - no billions - maybe trillions of planets in the galaxy. I don't get why we can't put our differences aside and get out there and explore. We aren't meant to stay here forever.

      The sound is objects hitting the mic and rattling the diaphragm which makes sound. It’s essentially the sound of the vibration of objects banging together and you cant see stars because the suns light reflected off earth is drowning it out. It’s like shining a flashlight in the daytime you won’t see the light from the flashlight because it’s a lot dimmer from where the astronaut is

      Sorry, but the big problem here, is that you don't understand how cameras work.
      Do you REALLY expect to see stars on the same video as the brightly sunlit Earth, ISS and white spacesuits???
      At about 3:15, where the cameras aperture has opened up more, because it's in shadow, you can see a white dot in the background in space. That's most probably the moon, and it's that small, because the camera has a wide angle lens.

    • @YDDES
      @YDDES 8 лет назад +1

      +David San
      "...not to mention that x times they send a thing to mars and that can take picture of the mars but not about our earth with sun, moon and other stars. "
      As I said above: You have to learn how cameras work.
      Have you EVER seen any stars on photographs of the other planets?
      No, not even on the telescope photos 100 years old. Do you know why? The stars are WAAAY too faint, compared to the planets, to be registered by the camera.
      To catch the stars, you need a MUCH longer exposure time, and such a long exposure would make the planets (including Earth) to look like big, white fuzzy blobs.

      That's actually incorrect. The only reason why there's not that much sound in space is because there is no atmosphere for the sound waves to bounce off of. There's no ocean of gas for the sound to be heard traveling through.

    BTW, the reason you can hear sound, is because the medium the sound is travelling through is the camera, astronaut, and entire ISS.

    This sort of footage makes me want to cry, it's utterly stunning.
    It also makes me want to cry at the inane ignorance of Flat-Earthers who want to ignore evidence to back up their outlandish theories.

      Freedom Of Nomad I don't know if what you said is true, but there's no use. They've all been brainwashed since birth to believe just about anything... If NASA said they found a unicorn corpse on the moon, they'd eat it up and it would soon be FACT.
