I have one thing to say..
When people say 'The daddy long leg is the most venomous spider" They don't mean the Harvestman. They mean the Cellar Spider. In Louisiana, we call the Cellar Spiders Daddy Long Legs and I've heard people say that about them.
Thanks so much for that clarification, and thanks for watching!
Cellar spiders have very mild venom but they are incredible predators of spiders. They pose zero threat to humans.
In tenn that myth is associated with daddylonglegs, almost every person that sees one around here immediately recites this old saying.
Where is live, craneflys, cellar spiders and harvestmen are all referred to as daddy long legs.
in New York (More specifically Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx) Cellar Spiders are always called Daddy Long Legs
Harvestmen also huddle up in big clumps to keep warm and I find that adorable. That’s what it is when you find what looks like huge clumps of hair on the side or underneath a rock or something. And I obviously don’t have experience but I heard that it smells real bad if you kill em so it’s best to just leave them alone.
More people need to see this video. I'm tired of explaining this to EVERYONE. Lol.
I saw a harvestman eat a moth before. They definitely eat other bugs.
My favorite are jumping spiders. They're neat!
also hella freakin cute man, those lil eyes and lil jump
Adorable little curious spider, hard to forget a interaction w/ a jumper, they are the reason I make efforts not to hurt there scarier cousins like the wolf (wolf's are big and are known to go into strike stance and be extremely aggressive)
@@Ranzoe813 I was on a solo stealth camping trip about 10 years ago. Setting my one man tent up in the dark, had a head lamp on, I heard something to my right. When i turned to look i saw red glowing eyes. A wolf spider was coming towards me. It isnt what i heard but it's the only thing i saw in that direction. Kinda creeped me out a little. Lol
We call them daddy longlegs in oregon. I finally held one a while back and it was pretty friendly.
The same people that say the harvestmen is the most "poisonous" (yes, not even venomous) are also the same people that say they got "bit" by a bee.
In Australia everyone calls the cellar spiders daddy long legs, don’t think we even have harvestmen here
People all over the U.S. call them "Daddy longlegs." Good little video. Thanks so much.
This is partially true.. Harvestmen do eat other bugs and have been known to be cannibalistic. Still not a threat to humans.
That's not a harvestman*
Im not gunna lie ive always just called both daddy long legs i never knew they were different. I also never really check them out i just see the long thin legs and say oh daddy long legs hey buddy and go about my day lmao 🤣😂 now oll have to take a closer look whenever i see them and see which it actually is!
Muy buen video, estas especies tienen formas muy peculiares, sin duda hacen la colección entomologica más interesante.
I'll let a cellar spider into my house on the day HECK freezes over!
Cellar spiders honestly dont bother anyone but bugs and other spiders. They usually avoid people and like to live in high corners.
If you dont have cellar spiders in your house, you probably got other more dangerous ones around
If I had any celebrity spiders in my house I always kill those danm things!!
Celler spiders are also in the house not in the basement also in all of the rooms in the Philippines
I’ve witnessed many a harvestman eating insects. They were eating freshly emerged cicadas this years all over the trees. They are easy meals at night when they emerge.
When I just said cellar, spidies instead of cellar, spiders
she said they don't eat other insects, yes they do
Trevor Hutcheson yes
Seen them with my own eyes. Lived in the country my whole life. They certainly do.
Never once confused a cellar for a fiddle, when you live in recluse country...you know this spider or @ least should.. doesn't look like a fiddle @ all more so harvestman imo
I always laugh when people misidentify the brown recluse. I hate them and it’s never a mistake. I can tell instantly. Had to work at infested houses before with suits on because they would crawl up you while working.
Harvestman are not spiders.
Cellar Spiders do look a bit like Brown Recluses. I guess that's why people think they're venomous?
they look nothing like eatchother
Nothing like each other…
I find harvestmen terrifying, i hate every bug with many long legs, including crane flies
arachnids not bugs
Wuss 😂😂😂
I have two in my bathroom by my sink
Cellar spiders are cool dudes.
I used to be really distressed by these spiders, thinking they were invading my room and things but not any other types, just these ones, think it started when I thought one looked headless but that seems funny now. Are these the only spiders that do that, I can’t remember?
mum please help I’m pissing and screaming and crying
Karan I’m pissing and shitting and I camed
Alexander Bright I know, that’s what I thought 😂
Btw guys do I need some questions to put in here why do cellar spider is headless I seen them in my house and they looked dead and headless
@@this_is_ARZEN you have tarantulas roaming around at night. They eat the heads of the cellars.
You can find them in my toilet ceiling
I do have a cellar spider thats living in my ceiling room ! Im convinced that it’s actually a spider bot just spying on me But i don’t mind.
1:21 WATTA HE DO
Harvesters do eat meat, but it scavenges it. It does not hunt.
I recently got over my fear of them, and yeah, they can't hurt ya at all.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! We appreciate your tips and are wishing you a bountiful harvest this year! Thanks for tuning in! Happy Gardening!
I have a full blown phobia of them. I rarely hunt anymore just because I don't want to come into contact with them. I pretty much stay secluded indoors throught the fall season when they are most prevalent. I don't think I will ever get over my phobia of them. I've been this way as far back as I can remember. But I'm not scared of other bugs, insects, or even most other spiders. Guess I'm just crazy, LOL.
@@happyhour6426 I'm the same way. I can look at other spiders, even tarantuals.the long leg on these creep me out. I also avoid going in the woods now because of this phobia. Trying to get over it by watching these videos
I have a huge fear of them how did you overcome it
Harvestman are actually carnivores, but they only eat smaller invertebrates like caterpillars or mites.
Proud to say, I found these facts when I was 12 or there a bouts
I found one in my closet
now if i have to call a spider a special term all call him dad
I actually love both of these spiders! I use to be afriad of them. But now i have learned that these guys are harmless and infact daddy long legs are more afraid of humans than you are to the spider. And i always play with them i when catch one.
But they're terrifying
i want to know why americans never use the word opilion
its the same reason people dont call plants by the scientific names, because its easier to remember and correlate what they do with simpler names in comparison to complex latin names.
@@ZakiBlakki but opilion sounds easier and is shorter than daddy longlegs
@@11kimczi fair point, but if you went on the street and asked a person what a opilion is, they probably wouldnt be able to tell you. where as if you asked anyone not just in america, but throughout the world what a daddy long legs is, you will get 3 different answers correlating to 3 different insects/arachnids/opiliods that have long legs (dunno where the daddy part comes from). in the end simplicity will tend to be the naming sense for remembrance, but scientific names are for understanding the sub genres and names of the discoverers. unfortunately when it comes to english though, we just name things as we see them if we dont actually know what they are. In the end though, it would be awesome to know things like this as "opilion" or know plant names by scientific names, but instead we call ants that bite and feel like fire on the bite - fire ants.
@@ZakiBlakki in my country nearly everyone call them just spiders no special name or something even though they're not a spiders but people don't have this knowledge
@@11kimczi in actuality, ive never seen a harvestman in person, but from where I am (aus), we call the cellar spiders daddy long legs. and in truth im not really suprised they call harvestman arachnids daddy long legs as they do have somewhat similar legs
What does it feed on then?
Opilines eat aphids, caterpillars, beetles, flies, mites, small slugs, snails, earthworms, spiders, other harvestmen, decaying plant and animal matter, bird droppings and fungi. (They're like bottom feeders)
Thank you! Add emerging cicadas to the list. They loved them this year. It was like an all you can eat buffet. They would wait in the crevices of the giant pine trees here with their legs out feeling. When a cicada would crawl up past them, they would feel it and attack. They will feed on them while emerging until dead. Free meals. Fascinating to watch.
Our daddy longlegs has wings.
Common names for species vary all around the globe. Sounds like you might be describing a Crane Fly. They are not arachnids, but do resemble the Harvestman Spider on account of their long legs. Thanks for tuning in and sharing your bit of knowledge! Happy Gardening!
that's a crane fly. They're basically harmless
... or a Skeeter Eater lol!
@@GiordanDiodato. All The Daddy Long Legs are Harmless
Where I come from in California we call them Mosquito Hawks!
