  • Cellar spiders (Pholcus phalangioides) are common inside houses and they’re often called “daddy-long legs”. But cellar spiders are not the only organisms referred to as “daddy-long legs”. What are the recognizable characters for cellar spiders? Why do those spiders make weird vibrating movements (gyration) when you disturb them or touch their web? And why is it a good idea to keep them in your house?

    The rarely bite thing is an understatement... they refuse to bite you unless literally not given any choice to escape. They don't have time to lower their bodies to bite when it won't do much so they'd rather run away

    I've been watching a drawn-out battle between a determined cellar spider and a false widow in my kitchen. The false widow is holed up in a corner of the ceiling. The cellar spider has constructed his much larger web around the false widow and keeps trying to lure him out. They take occasional jabs at each other, then retreat a few inches and wait to see who will make the next move. Like a spider version of the enemy at the gates. Im definition rooting for the cellar spider

      @@ybgglxcky2546 That's actually just a myth. The cellar spider's venom is quite weak. However, they are capable of trapping other insects and spiders in their webbing to an extremely impressive degree, coupled with the fact that their legs are longer than most spiders; both them a huge advantage in being able to take down insects larger and tougher than themselves.

    I found a brown recluse in my apartment a few years back and learned that cellar spiders are prolific hunters of pests, including brown recluses. Cellar spiders are now welcome to stay near front door and eat all the brown recluses they want.
    I've also made the connection that if I'm finding cellar spiders lingering around my apartment, I have enough unwelcome guests I didn't know about lingering that are keeping it fed. If there weren't enough bugs and spiders to eat there, it would have left. So again, it's free to stay here.

    Daddy longlegs, or harvestmen, are familiar Missouri animals. They are not spiders, but opilionids. Unlike spiders, they have a fused body form and lack silk and venom glands. In harvestmen, the body is a simple oval, and it's usually hard to tell where the “head” ends and the segmented “abdomen” begins.

Once it got a hold of the house spider they both fell down from my ceiling to the floor where the daddy long legs waited for the venom to kick in after it’s attack. ( did this for ladybugs and watched it climb on top.) I too have watched the giarations. I agree it is to either hide themselves from others or to move the web around to catch food. I did not know about the enzymes , but that is what it appeared to me that the treated their food like sippy bags. One thing I have observed is the abandoned exoskeletons. There for a while I thought they were cannibals and ate their own. I have watched a mother spider carry the egg sacks around and move thim into a "nursery " area. They are very helpful creatures.

    These spiders are quite interesting. In my country these spiders were 10-15 years ago a rare species. These days quite common. I have lots of 'em in my apartment, they keep the silver fishers on their toes. My wife didn't want them firstly, but now she is used to them, sometimes she even tries to get one of them on her hand sometimes with failure, since these spiders rather run away as far and fast as they can. I've even witnessed two of these spiders having an egg sags and giving birth to small mini spiders. And ye the gyration effect is funny to look at, I occasionally try to make em spin on their web just to "train" them :D. Only thing that is bothersome is that they like to get into our bedroom corners and walk around the wall sometimes. But I just relocate them to the kitchen instead. Also they are damn fast, so if you startle them they can run really fast and that's kinda creepy stuff. I've killed few of 'em on accident (hoovering and cleaning) and it always makes me feel kinda bad, these fellows are important creatures and only want to eat and help us.

    I have a gazillion in my current house. It’s an older home. To me they are the most prominent pest, in warmer months I am bombarded by them. And I am bothered because they leave piles behind and yucky webs. In my case I’d rather spend a day with a fly swatted handy to kill houseflies than see these guys everywhere. Maybe I wouldn’t mind so much if they weren’t so prolific and messy. But there it is. I have noticed the gyrations also, I always thought it was because I jiggled the web but I guess it does look self induced.

    Hi , I have possibly thousands of cellar spiders in my house , the ones in my bedroom have names , there's big Veronica and Vera , I've seen everything they do and I really do love them they eat giant house spiders I don't like them because they wander and they're aggressive , Veronica and Vera s eggs have just hatched , occasionally one of them will come down on a strand of web and stay near my face I'm sure they're there to say hello then they go back up to Thier massive web around my bedroom , they see me every day from birth they are not scared of me , the babies are cute , I love the mothers carrying her egg ball around with her , I heard they were called cave spiders a long time ago , thanks for showing your video .

    Ngl, I'm killing mine, but I'm reasonable. In less than 4 minutes I caught 7, in one basement corner and it's evident I have an infestation. But this is because I keep reptiles and sometimes their food gets loose and now I have a spider Hilton hotel with free buffet. When their numbers are down again, the lucky survivors will have it all to themselves till next year.

    Not being gross I seen one on my bedroom floor before so I got out my camera and zoomed in and it was acutely eating a little bug that the naked eye wouldn't see. I don't find them scary compared to regular spiders. I find them very curious there always landing beside me ! Like on a regular occasion they come down on there Web into my face. 😳 they tend to go where I am ! ... is my perfume attracting them ? Do they like certain scents? I wear Diana Ross, it smells like a forest.

    I have arachnophobia. Seriously. (I couldn't put my hand on a colour photo of a spider even if you offered me £500 to do so). But I'm *not* afraid of cellar spiders. In fact I leave their webs alone in my home unless they get too big and then I flick some away with a duster making sure I leave the resident spider alone.
    The reason I let them be and in fact *welcome* them? They *hunt* the huge house spiders which invade my home every autumn.
    If I see a house spider in my bedroom, I cannot turn off the light unless I've managed to trap it and put it outside.
    One hid in my dressing gown and I didn't know until I went downstairs to clean my teeth (old house with downstairs bathroom) and saw it out of the corner of my eye walking on my shoulder.😱
    After I'd stopped throwing up and crying and gone back upstairs to put on my other dressing gown (I cannot wear the 1st one again until I have washed it) I inspected the sink and everywhere around it to make sure the spider had gone, in order to be able to clean my teeth.
    2 days ago, there was a whopper of a house spider on the ceiling in the living room but it was at the opposite end to where I sit.
    This afternoon, I spotted it right above my PC, all trussed up like a neat little package, in the web of one of my 'guardians' , the cellar spider who lives up there.
    If you are afraid of the nasty, big, hairy legged spiders, let Pholcidae live with you and build their webs. They will keep you safe.

      Yeah I’m the same way. I’m a HUGE arachnophobe when it comes to literally any other spider on this planet but i can comfortably sleep in the same room with one these little fellas knowing they’ll remain in their web 90% of the time and never bother me or crawl all over my damn walls and ceiling. Any other spider however who sets one leg in my room is gonna be kissing the bottom of my steel toe working boot.

    • @natureclearly
      @natureclearly  9 месяцев назад +1

      It's true that this is commonly said about Pholcus spiders. Having chelicerae means the spiders can bite. They can obviously bite other insects. There's no clear evidence whether they can bite through human skin or not. But when you think about it, not all human skin is equally thick, so can we definitely say it is impossible? I don't think so...Would you feel the bite of this spider? Probably not.

    Brilliant explanation and images. Did you take the photos yourself? I reckon I love and respect all creatures, but this is one of the very few (along with mosquitoes and clothes moths) that I actively hunt down and kill. (It doesn’t make me feel good!) The reason being that (here in North West England) these spiders are DRAMATICALLY proliferating. They have moved North because of the warming climate. I’m not the best housekeeper (understatement!) and before you know it, one has a mass-infestation on one’s hands. And they get EVERYWHERE…including inside kitchen cupboards and every other relatively undisturbed space in the house. But they have feelings too, so nowhere draughty! The other reason I don’t like them is that they will readily predate the common house spider Tegenaria domestica, literally trussing them up in seconds. I’ve watched it happen. So I’m afraid these “upstart” new arrivals are on my “hit-list”!

    • @natureclearly
      @natureclearly  9 месяцев назад

      I give you some credit for at least not feeling good about killing them! :)) I understand that they can get a little too comfortable in one's house and then there's an ever-growing spider family before you know it. I enjoy observing the spiders and also appreciate their hard work catching all the annoying pest insects (such as termites!), but we currently have around 10 spiders in each room and our (human) visitors don't find all the spiders and their webs as fascinating as we do! :)

    • @PhyllisGlassup2TheBrim
      @PhyllisGlassup2TheBrim 9 месяцев назад +1

      The fact that they hunt the house spiders is a huge bonus for me. That being said, I refuse to kill even the house spiders which make me throw up and shake. I kill nothing if I can avoid it. I *welcome* pholcidae because they keep my home clear of the spiders which terrify me so badly.
      Pholcidae don't bite, house spiders do. Pholcidae don't make scuttling sounds on the wallpaper above your head, house spiders do. Pholcidae don't jump at you, house spiders do.
