If the atmosphere has less oxygen (from mass fire for example) insects will naturally increase in size (with unlimited potential), so it's possible.

In Pennsylvania these things are everywhere, they are in my basement, down at the pond and creek, anywhere that is wet and moist. The only thing I’ve seen eat them are bass, bluegills, sunnies, and dragonflies
It’s nice they comment on the lungs of the spider. They do have unique lungs (only spiders and scorpions have this type of lung). They’re actually called book lungs. I think this is really cool.

Let me just say this: others may not be able to move (or at least as well as this one can), but all spiders can float on the surface of water. When they do become submerged, air bubbles are created all over its body so it can hold its breath for hours.
The reason why flushing them down the sink/drain is so bad is because the chemicals not only cause them to sink, but they also cannot create the air pockets on their bodies, meaning they drown.
