I hate mosquitoes with a passion. I can't go outside for 5 minutes without being bitten. As an example, my dad and sister were outside for an hour working on gutter cleaning. Neither were bitten. I stepped outside for 5 minutes (not exaggerating)... 4 or 5 bites. Example two, my brother and I were outside standing in place next to each other for 15 minutes. In that time, I was bitten exactly 9 times and my brother only once.

@@valeleeyy Yes! Like, I just notice something's itchy and then find out there's already a bite and a few more later on. It sounds dramatic but I do get stressed out about it because it really is getting so darn itchy. 😭
Very interesting and correct. My wife grew up in Tanzania and she has never had malaria. Mosquitoes hardly bother her. I lived in Tanzania for 12 years and had malaria at least a dozen times or more. Mosquitoes cannot leave me alone

The ultimate non toxic mosquito repellant is cloves mixed in ordinary cooking oil. Olive or rapeseed oil. Mix the powdered cloves in oil, let stand for a few days, filter the clove powder out, and apply the oil. Tested and proven in Finnish midsummer with a lot of bloodthisrty mosquitoes. One got as close as one inch from my arm when it got the scent and braked and got away.
I would hate that so much. When I get bit by mosquitos my bite marks get swelled up a lot. I used to see it get bigger with my own eyes. It was really bad when I was a kid, but over time the marks seem to get smaller.
The thing that really gets me about mosquitos is when you're trying to sleep and they are flying around your ears making that buzzing sound. Anyone else really despise this sound? It's worse than nails on a chalkboard for me as it is usually accompanied by a bite to add insult to injury. You're always just waiting, mortified and annoyed by the occasional buzzzzzzzzzzzz.
This thing is just the bane of my existence. You would be trying to sleep peacefully in a quiet and silent room ...and then "BZZZZ" right in your ear like if something was trying to make a prank on you or just annoy you because they can 😑
It's always good to learn more about threats such as illnesses, animals, natural catastrophes etc. Bc if you always try to avoid them, you'll never know how to fight them or at least how to protect humans against them.

Years ago, I took my family and my brothers family on a camping trip to Fire Island one summer. Out of 8 of us all but my 2nd son Calvin was eaten alive by mosquitos. Calvin had 2 bite marks at the end of the trip while the rest of us was covered in bite marks. We all ate the same food used the same soaps same gene pool. We still talk about how weird that was when we get together in the summer time.

My main problem with mosquitos isn't that they bite me more than everyone else, it's the fact that they constantly go “Kamikaze” straight in my eyes and ears. Absolutely unbearable!
For me I always observed the very strange pattern of them kamikazeing into my nostrils and me spasming around like a monkey on crack because of it :'D I just about a week ago sent a voice note to my sister telling her about how upset I am that it didn't just happen like once or twice, but that it happened more often than that. Seeing how Derek explains that they're attracted to the carbon dioxide it kind of makes sense that they'd fly towards the source of it lol Still annoying af though
@@JimmyHey problem is, in my case, they attack my eyes and ears, not my mouth nor nostrils... As last as I know, I don't breath with my ears XD I suspect it might be about shadows and sweat, because it's not just mosquitoes that crash on me like remains of a space shuttle crash on earth. They seek shaded areas to cool down and sweat to hydrate, but both of these don't explain everything. I suppose we're the *un*lucky ones.
@@FredGlt Yea, I wonder why they do that It's gotta be really annoying as well; minding your own business and suddenly something flies right into your eyes out of nowhere :'D
My mom and I are completely ignored by mosquitoes and we both have chronic illnesses that mess with our body regulation in various ways, including making us barely sweat at all and have cold skin. We always thought that was why we never get bitten even when my dad and sister are attacked, so the scientist making note to rub your hands together to stimulate warmth/oils on your skin really stood out to me
@@jadenmoore8209 my mom has Hashimoto’s disease / hypothyroidism. I have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) secondary to hypermobile ehlers danlos syndrome (hEDS)

I'm that guy in my family. At first I was annoyed but eventually I realized it was a noble quest. So I let myself be the bait, let them come near, and zap those suckers with my mosquito racket.
That explains a lot of things. Also, I react so badly to any bug bites. Like within a minute or two, one mosquito bite can grow to be 4-5 cm wide! It's so itchy, hard and warm to the touch as well.
You may be allergic to insect bites my friend, I had the reaction as you before knowing that it's not normal to others & that I'm allergic, consult an allergy specialist, have a good one
Apply Tea Tree essential oils to the bites several times a day. It'll stop the itch awa the infection being caused on your skin. That's what I do. It helps a lot. Quality matters in the choice of oils too. I use Young Living and even their Lavender helps my bites heal faster.

Always found it curious that I never got bit by mosquitoes while living in South East Asia. Nearly everyone of my friends had dengue fever at some point, I managed to avoid it. I wasn’t sure if I just didn’t have an allergic reaction to the bites, so I couldn’t see them.
Dengue is not very far away from the US. Very common in Central America, Honduras, Nicaragua etc. Luckily, those little fuckers don't manage to make it to the US, unlike other pests.

Great video, I've always wondered why I get attacked by misquotes so much more than most people. I hate them enough I'm almost willing to move someone different for less of them.
I don’t need a test. I’ve been standing with a group of a dozen people and nobody got bit, but I was eaten alive. I’ve even dove into the sea to get relief. It’s been that way all my life.
If any researchers are out there, I have NEVER met another person who gets bit by mosquitoes more than me. I just can't go outside after 5pm. I'll go out to clean the pool skimmers and get 5 bites while my husband will go for a long walk and get nothing. My brother-in-law was always the one who was most bit in his family (my husbands), but he loves to joke that he likes when I'm around because I take the bites instead of him. And my bites turn into little swollen blobs that itch like crazy for days. I would LOVE to be tested. If it's important, I live in North Alabama, USA.
I found after living on a boat and at the mercy of mosquitoes, what you eat makes a huge difference. I completely stopped eating bananas because I found that within an hour of eating a banana the mosquitoes would be all around me. This effect would last a couple of days, slowly waning.
Back in the day when I went backpacking, mosquitos where a problem and here is how I dealt with it including commercial chemicals that can be applied to clothing and skin. Mosquitos are most active in the morning and at dawn. So keeping this in mind for the evening when we would all be eating dinner and later just sitting around talking before we started our campfire for the evening. I would not eat anything sweet for dinner because it makes your skin and breath more attractive to mosquitos. No fruit, no candy, no hot chocolate with marshmallows, no honey, no granola bar... I would chop up some raw garlic and swallow it down with a swig of water. That in combination with commercial chemicals applied properly, I rarely ever got bitten whilst the guys and gals around me did.
Yes. Garlic is not to their taste and if you eat a lot of it not only your breath but your blood will smell like it. But be careful. Garlic is an antibiotic.
I've always been the person mosquitoes prefer. If I'm in the backyard with my friends, the mosquitoes will ignore my friends and come to me. It's agony
I'm in awe actually at how dedicated this guy is to his studies of them just sticking his arm in the box to feed them. I've always had horrible reactions to mosquito bites they swell up to like 4 times bigger than most peoples and can sometimes be so bad (especially on an area likemy hand or fingers) that the appendage is practically unusable, I'm pretty sure if I stuck my arm in one of those boxes I would have to amputate it
@Hycoperosity I would assume demographic research and product development mostly, but yeah it’s still kinda scary that they can kinda just hide the fact that you’re essentially selling your genome in exchange for a service
Probably you didn't get bitten enough. I'm basically a decoy for mosquito... When among a group of people, all mosquitoes will usually get to me. The first few years, each bite swell enormously! If I got bitten in the arm, I the swelling was like another bycept appearing! After several years of getting bitten, no only a small red bump appears.
Same thing happens to me. What I found out is that any irritation to the mosquito bite of any kind causes it to swell much more. Even if something just barely brushes up on the bite. Best thing to do is just ignore it completely and pray it goes away quick, the itchiness is the worst part for sure
I always heard it was more likely to attract them if you ate bananas or drank alcohol since they smell it in your breath. Also, if you are Type O blood for some reason (can't remember if rh factor is a factor as well). Supposedly, the smell of garlic and citrus tends to keep them away.
everyone always told me I get bit more because I like wine, but now I'm pregnant, not drinking at all and they're still coming for me. I am type O though so maybe that's it!

My mom told me that the amount of sugar in your blood was what attracted mosquitoes. I got bit like crazy by them as a kid, especially, and the reactions I had were intense. Huge hard red swellings. One on my shin I scratched so much with the heel of my shoe during PE that at some point it became grossly infected. I saved it for a day when I really really wanted to stay home from school....and when I showed it to my mom and my big brother, they were appalled. It had turned green at the center, where the scab started originally, and dark red all around it. I decided it was ripe and crossed my fingers and hoped it would work so I could stay home and watch some classic musicals I was anxious to watch (back then you had to plan these things after looking through the TV guides to see what movies you were dying to see would be televised). So... this still doesn't answer my gigantic mystery: As a kid, I would get literally hundreds of bites every summer. I was the most mosquito-attractive person I knew by a margin.Yet at one point, just in a year or two, very likely around puberty, I suddenly stopped being attractive and since then have consistently gotten maybe 1-2 dozen bites the entire summer. *_How can someone's mosquito-attractiveness change like that?!_*
And no, no malaria or something like that, though that would have the opposite effect. I've never found any explanation for suddenly becoming unattractive when literally the only change was a year or two of growing up. I suspect something in puberty must have done it, it was probably around that time, but that's the only thing about the scenarios that changed.
It could be because your metabolism slowed down during puberty, so less CO2 = Less mosquitoes i did some reseaech and it is possible for metabolism to slow down during puberty, according to a study 15 year old at rest spent less 450 calories compared to when they were 10, so that could be the reason i guess Source: (www.health24.com/Lifestyle/Teen/Your-body/kids-metabolism-may-slow-down-during-puberty-20160923)

I never thought I’d dislike being so attractive lol. This is my biggest problem why I hate rainy season. My family would get bitten sure, but I’m the one who always ends up having 10 or more bites in just one night. It’s frustratingly itchy and I don’t like how my rashes turn super duper red and big too and would take time to heal. I would have to rub repellent over my body and has the aroma diffuser going on with citronella or peppermint or whatever mentholly smell for added protection. There was a time I even used menthol ointment as a lotion literally because they won’t just leave me alone.
I've noticed that I am far less attractive to mosquitoes than my neighbor. When we talk at the fence near dusk he will often complain about being bit and excuse himself to go inside. Meanwhile I would maybe have been bitten only once or twice. Once he's gone however I seem to become the center of mosquitoe attention. It happens with consistency and I've been aware of this for a couple years.

@@frostyguy1989 Finally a reasonable sounding answer. I hate this because I now have to put aside my plans for mosquito genocide. I really was trying to come up with an idea for killing an entire species. no shame about that at all.
I remember seeing a study that said mosquitos don't contribute a meaningful amount of food to ecosystems. They seem to bother all animals . . .I want to believe we could all live without them and some other disease or natural selection will kill off sick/injured/overpopulated organisms.

During rough years dealing with PTSD I was once at a gathering in a garden, and constantly 3-5 mosquitos were landing on my face, while I was speaking. That had never happened before. And it was only happening to me. Then I had two bites of the chocolate cake in front of me, and they flew away and nothing bit me for the rest of the evening. I read somewhere that people take high vitamin B for a month or so before going to places where Malaria is a problem. Apparently your body can make something that makes your blood less easy to use for mosquitoes or something. So i concluded during stress I might have a higher need for vitamin B and magensium, and supplemented. That year I had not one single mosquito bite and no tick bites at all, although I stayed outside a lot and others got bitten. Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce the chocolate cake effect. I also don't have the recipe of the cake I ate at that gathering.

As someone whose job is to find and control mosquitoes I always appreciate seeing more, easily accessible information for the public. Before I started this job I had no idea just how impactful they were. It averages out to be about 1500 people per day dying due to mosquito borne diseases. Most of them are actually terrifying and definitely suggest people look into them. My personal favorites are Dengue and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), but there are so many and they are all super interesting.
@@danthadon87 unfortunately it's not that easy, depending on the environment you live in. Really it comes down to a combination of a bunch of things. Bug spray on yourself, source reduction (removing standing water) around your house/neighborhood, staying inside during and around peak activity hours (30 min before sunrise and 30m after sunset), but the fact of the matter is they are everywhere. My family actually uses me as their mosquito repellant. As long as I am next to them, I will attract every mosquito in the vicinity so they don't get bitten. Even if I am covered in 100% DEET repellant, the mosquitos still choose me. Then I spend months covered in scabs from one night outdoors. I once went to the Philippines with a group of friends and was the only one that came home with hundreds of tiny bites. I still don't know what bit me, but I have come to the conclusion that I am not meant to be outdoors. If I was born centuries ago, I probably wouldn't have made it through childhood.
The genetic factor is mildly interesting. But I can't do anything about that. I'm much more interested in what changes a person can actually make to make themselves less attractive to mosquitos? I did 15 years in the navy and had to do a couple tours in Afghanistan. While prepping for tour I was instructed to take these pills once a day everyday for a year to keep from contracting malaria if bitten by a mosquito known as doxycycline. What I found out about malaria was it was mostly common I. Northern Africa. I also found out that most of the people who live in Northern Africa who either have sickle cell anemia, or the trait developed this as an evolutionary defense mechanism to the microbe carried by the mosquito that’s known to cause malaria. So basically, if you have sickle cell, your blood cell shape is not round like healthy cells and instead take on the shape of a sickle, a cutting tool shaped like a crescent moon. Because the blood cell is shaped like a sickle, it isn’t as strong and takes up less surface area compared to a normal healthy blood cell and it also dies off quickly compared to round blood cells as well. The malaria virus when contracted, has a very difficult time entering and reproducing more copies of itself in sickle shaped blood cells due to the lack of rigidity and weakness of the sickled cell thereby making it damn near impossible to be infected by it. I also learned that the hiv virus has a hard time reproducing in sickled blood cells for the same reason thus making a person with sickle cell less likely( but impossible ) to contract certain viral diseases.
I'm blood type o and I seem to get swarmed by mosquitoes. Their bites really affect me too. They itch for a long time and I usually do it until they bleed. It's been like this my whole life. I will definitely take those tips on how to repel them, thank you so much for the upload!
I'm O positive and absolutely a lunch buffet for mosquitos. But we're slowly starting to discover that blood type is likely not the actual factor behind attractiveness to mosquitos, but it's something deeper. I swear I’ve noticed that women usually get bit more than men. I always get bitten but the guys around me don’t (and I’ve noticed a similar trend with my other female friends) and it’s made me wonder if maybe our blood tastes different to them due to hormones (especially during certain parts of our cycle). Idk it’s just a theory, but it seems to ring true to me.
I get bit less than most male people around me (with the exception being my dad, I probably got some good anti mosquito genes from there!). So it's not a catch all. Hormones can change the odours you give off I believe, however a lot of the reasons they listed (high metabolism, sweat etc) are actually generally higher in males. So females being more attractive to mosquitos is kinda counter intuitive to that.

So... this still doesn't answer my gigantic mystery: As a kid, I would get literally hundreds of bites every summer.
Interesting. Very interesting.
Maybe testosterone or some other hormone altered your pheromones.
It could be because your metabolism slowed down during puberty, so less CO2 = Less mosquitoes

I always had the real question about : "What part of the ecosystem NEEDS mosquitos."
I'm sure the answer is that "it's complicated" and many things can affect an ecosystem balance, but really I wanted to know what they contribute
They're a food source for insectivores, and as a parasitic species, they serve in a role that limits how successful their host species can get.

Diet is also a huge influence. This was demonstrated decades ago. In particular, taking Thiamine increases your immunity to mosquitoes and eating candy and processed foods makes you more vulnerable.
Huh. Funny. I just started taking a natural B1 supplement (allithiamine) for another reason but I noticed I could walk outside for a few minutes wearing shorts without being chased by mosquitoes & it’s been raining like crazy! If there is a mosquito in the area I’m the person targeted.

@@luccianoblock5127 It also has to do with chemicals your body produce.
@@luccianoblock5127 Actually, I fully agree! It may not be the main factor, but it definitely plays a part. I have no science to back this up, but I’m using personal experiences. When I was 10 and younger, I was constantly getting bit my mosquitos (like 4-5 bites every 2 hrs I was outside), but now that I’m older I rarely ever get bit. I’m sure if I did some research, I could find some reason of why that is.
After I had cancer treatment, I haven’t got bit by a mosquito. I think it’s the health of a person/chemicals

Amazing! My husband is extremely attractive to mosquitos and, to my knowledge, I have been bitten only a handful of times in my 60-plus years of life. We have frequently joked that he is much sweeter than me. Very satisfying to understand the scientific explanation.

Imma go an diet of vitamin B
Flour, eggs, butter, chocolate. 😄
yep i heard somewhere the vitamin B thing too . Unfortunately one reason one gets a hangover is because drinking alcohol brings down your vitamin B levels . I love having a few beers outside in the summer , mosquitoes love me doing that too . I hate hangovers and mozzie bites

From a young age I’ve always been scared of staying out at night due to the amount of mosquitoes I attract, now I finally get to find out why😅🎉
They have likely been the single most deadly killer in all of human existence. No, really. Worse than black plague.
So how does a person go about preventing a mosquito from biting them?
@@danthadon87 unfortunately it's not that easy, depending on the environment you live in. Really it comes down to a combination of a bunch of things. Bug spray on yourself, source reduction (removing standing water) around your house/neighborhood, staying inside during and around peak activity hours (30 min before sunrise and 30m after sunset), but the fact of the matter is they are everywhere. Fortunately, if you live in a place with dedicated mosquito control, the probability of contracting one of these arboviruses is pretty low.

But once research is done, we can eradicate or sterilize all mosquitoes. A relatively small sacrifice for protecting everyone
@Ryan Solecki Yes you are correct. Perhaps making them incapable of carrying protozoas and stuff would be better
Ryan Solecki exactly, ppl don’t realize there is a reason for mosquitoes. They are food for many animals. You need to leave them alone. Everything and everyone eventually dies. Life is incredibly precious and goes by so fast. Be the best human u can be, leave a good legacy and mark behind on this planet. Teach the future generations to love, forgive and do unto others as you’d have them do unto you and respect and protect all living things and u will inevitably make a better world for future generations...
If only.....
Ryan Solecki Are there any animals that primarily eat mosquitoes? Bats, spiders, and most other creatures that eat them have other food sources.
how do they know i have begun to fall asleep? how do they find the ear?
these are more important questions Derek!!
🧐😂😂
And why the goddamn ear
because its humid and because your head gives off a lot of heat wich mosquittos use to guide them, what i find odd is why they target limbs when they use heat to find their prey, shouldnt they bite the torso ?
Your metabolism changes when you fall asleep.
The ear might be slightly warmer and nicely supplied with blood vessels. No hair and thus easy access is a bonus.
better question: Why are you sleeping outdoors in a mosquito infested place?
It’s not just that over half of everyone who ever lived died because of mosquitoes - over half of everyone who ever lived has died from _malaria alone._

@@kateyare4708 everyone gets itchy but for some of us, the mosquito bite becomes cartoonishly large (swollen) even without us scratching.

Thanks for putting the results in the description 👍
The genetic factor is mildly interesting. But I can't do anything about that.
I'm much more interested in what changes a person can actually make to make themselves less attractive to mosquitos? Losing weight and obsessively scrubbing down before hikes are the only ones I managed to glean from what was said.

@I Cri Some Times male mosquitoes don't bite or even feed on blood. It's the females lol

I'm O positive and absolutely a lunch buffet for mosquitos. But we're slowly starting to discover that blood type is likely not the actual factor behind attractiveness to mosquitos, but it's something deeper. Which is crazy, since the mosquitos are obviously detecting those markers that we have at a genetic level.

Coz the mosquitoes which bite are FEMALE 😂 as said in this video 😂
I get bit less than most male people around me (with the exception being my dad, I probably got some good anti mosquito genes from there!). So it's not a catch all. Hormones can change the odours you give off I believe, however a lot of the reasons they listed (high metabolism, sweat etc) are actually generally higher in males. So females being more attractive to mosquitos is kinda counter intuitive to that.
