I’m evolving from a hyper conservative background, and while I still hold many conservative values (for myself, not to apply to other people), I’m shedding the toxicity and becoming much more open-minded. Mal’s podcast has been invaluable in introducing me to people I’ve never had the opportunity to meet. I wish more people were as understanding as I try to find my feet after leaving what was essentially brainwashing and psychological abuse that started before I ever had the opportunity to choose. It was what made it take so long for me to come out as gay, so that I missed out on half my life and lost several chances at love in my youth. I’m basically having to relearn everything and I’m going to have missteps and issues, but not out of malice, just the holdovers of ignorance and brainwashing.

Its a good interview but it definitely comes from the perspective of someone whose unique experience is hard to relate to. Not many people have the freedom or opportunity to explore all the aspects they talk about in a place of comfort or acceptance. I mean liberal arts college where your studying modern dance, is going to be probably one of the most liberal open minded places I can imagine. And equally with music and the entertainment industry (traditionally more artistic and open-minded spaces). Further I both agree and disagree with something they said, one is that you should be able to just be who you are with people respecting that and the pronouns you use. But I also think (and not that it needs to be done every time or in every situation), but if someone your close with is legitimately trying to understand gender identity, expression, or being non-binary then why not take the time to explain it. I find when you do this for people, they tend to be more understanding and less suspect of something they don't understand.
