Thanks for the indirect shout out. I was the guy that wore the Max Road 5s at Vol State. I actually wore that same style shoe you're reviewing. Pretty sweet! I've been a long time wear tester for Skechers Performance in this was definitely my favorite model so far. Guess who suggested putting a plate in there?
WHOA! I'm not sure what you're more of a legend for - running Vol State or getting an H-plate in there. Well done! (Sorry I forgot your name in the review, I'll give you a more direct shoutout next time.)
@@Believeintherun I'm sure it wasn't just me who suggested putting a plate in there, but I certainly must've been one of the first to make the suggestion. I'd been testing a TON of Skechers Performance "plated" shoes including the Speed Elite, Speed Freepredecessors
Whoops, I guess can't have too long of comments! I'll have to reply in long form elsewhere. Basically I loved the Speed Freek and felt a plate in the Max Road might make it a bit more stable and "lively". It worked!
I live near a skechers outlet store and sometimes running shoes will show up on their clearance rack. I've picked up 2 pairs of go run ride 7's NYC marathon edition for $23 a pair (which is also my favorite shoe of all time) and a pair of go run trl shoes for $28. I pop in there from time to time.
Great review, I got the Maxroad 4+ on sale for 78$ and I loved the cushion and lightweight. I cannot wait to try the 5 with the addition of the H plate. Great value for 130$.
My Gosh, you guys, I am obsessed with running shoes and you guys get funny and funnier. Ever since you sang Mocking Bird for the Mach 4, I only see Lloyd and Harry, and now with a Paris Hilton, “that’s hot.” I can’t 🤣🤣🤣 But on a serious note, I’ve like all the same shoes as Robbe so I need to try the Max Road 5.
I’ve tried a lot of different daily trainers over the last six months. This one is the best so far. I’m not a big Skechers fan. Their shoes are hit or miss, IMO. This one is perfect for daily miles.
I've heard nothing but great reviews about the MaxRoad 5, but nothing turns my stomach than going to the Skechers web site and the shoe isn't even available, sold out, or not even listed. It is August 10th, 2021, and I've been to trying to get the MaxRoad 5 since it became available. Initially, the size 14's were listed available, but back ordered. However, eventually they switched the highest size available to 13. I feel like everyone's favorite shoe in this category of 2021 is just a big tease for us big footed ones. I hoping Skechers will see this and know that there are big footed runners who would love to wear the Max Road 5 and make another drop of it for maybe Christmas. All that said, great job Believer in the Run! You are my favorite shoe reviewers. You're funny, real and authentic. Keep up the great work!
I’m also a size 14, and scored these from an online site called SCHEELS back in July (it was the only place in stock). Still I feel your pain because 14 is pain (I finally tracked down some Ultra Gildes in black this week). I’m to the point if I’m interested in a shoe I will just order it as soon as it is in stock and return it if I don’t like it. I will say Hoka is the one company that does always seem to have 14s in stock.
Skechers are difficult to get in the UK, but I have the Gorun Ride 8 and Razor Excess and the Razor Excess is fantastic with the Ride being great at more winter type medium to long runs 👍
I am a Skechers cheer leader rooting for the underdog. The running stores don't stock them. Don't know if they can't get shelf space or they prefer to market online. There own stores have no or crappy outdated model selections. The Max Road 4 was a furnace and ended up at the Goodwill. Didn't try the 4+. I LOVE my Razor 3+'s(2 pr.) and I now love the Max Road 5. Their achilles (spelling?) heal has been the GoRun Ride series. Though I love my Max Road 5, I must admit it does not have the energy return of my Novoblast 2's---my fav daily trainer of the year (though it is a heavier shoe.)
You are correct. Had skechers go run ride 9 and they were causing me bad knee problems. The heel rocker bevel is to long / steep inword and if you heel strike you crash land every step..
Yes guys love my Road Max 5s . Like the simplicity of the shoe lightweight comfortable bouncy. My Nova Blast 2 has become redundant it's heavier hotter and bulkier on foot.
In terms of pure cushiony comfort you would pick the Max Road over the Novablast 2? The Novablast has been my go to this year for long easy miles, but just saw the MR on sale and pretty tempted to try it…
After taking them on a 5 mile run, I had to return them. To tight in the midfoot, I could see the outside of my foot not aligned with the midsole. I am running in NB Rebel V2 and the standard width is wider than the MR 5.
The only thing is that the M-Strike geometry is the most noticable out of any of their shoes what a pointy/bump and firmer sort of feel by the arch or a bit behind it. It doesn't feel the smoothest because of that. The Gorun Ride 9 or Razor are much smoother and feel less like a firm bump near the back of the arch. It is also definitely a half size down shoe if you like a snug fit too.
This is the first thing I noticed. Even compared to a number of other rockered shoes these have a very noticeable bump. But by the end of the first run in them I didn't really notice it anymore. That said, if your joints/feet are more picky than mine it may be an issue.
Just got a pair of these. Hoooo boy, these are special. Super light for all that cushion, decently stable for a neutral shoe, and that plate makes running quickly feel great and efficient. Definitely not made for heel strikers, it feels like there is absolutely no foam under the heel given that steep heel bevel. Works for my stride, though.
I got these shoes roughly 3 weeks ago and added them into my rotation. I have 94 miles on them so far and they are holding up perfectly. I’m a forefoot striker and I can feel the h plate give a little pop. I agree that there’s a little too much room in them. I did a 22 mile steady long run this past Saturday and I ended up with blisters on my feet. I am sure I’ll just need to work with the lockdown some to combat this. But overall a very good shoe with a lot of cushion. A wonderful every day shoe.
Hey from Argentina, Here there is no Skechers store. I wear maxroad 4 and 4+ for all my trainings (I'm doing ultra for the last 2 years and on) . I wonder if they keep the flexibility in this model as they added the carbon plate. All my shoes I have to buy them blindly. I found that maxroad are the best shoes I've ever wore. So can you please tell me if this v5 keeps the flexibility and freedom feeling on the stride? thanks a lot.
I'm surprised at Robbie. Good job guys.... when I've had the MaxRoad, the stack is so high that I have to really work hard at not rolling my ankle, and I had rolled them a few times. I steer clear of stacks this high, but I love the 4mm drop, which is synonymous with most Skechers performance shoes, and is one of the things I love about them :-). I never tend to go above anything greater than 5 mm..... I'm looking forward to ur review on the Skechers Razor TRL (trail) to drop.... it looks like it will be awesome for those soft trails, rocks by the ocean, and even those trips where u walk/run to the trails in National Parks and Nature Reserves, and then hit the tracks.
Prob won't do a video review of the Razor TRL but it's a great shoe for buffed out trails. Not great for technical stuff (small lugs, not much cushion), but a super fun shoe
Picked up these Skechers (my first) after the first Thursday live stream and Robbe popped these on the table. Enjoying it most as a recovery easy day daily trainer. Still prefer the Endorphin Speed for my long runs. I had an issue with a hotspot on the balls of my feet near the big toe when I took the MR5 for a long run. Even with my wider midfoot, I also found the shoe a hair roomy and likely needed to cinch it down a bit more to prevent the hotspot. Loving the cush of the midsole and the rocker to roll off the miles. And now part of my rotation for marathon training (also first!) for MCM in DC in Oct!
Yeah I meant to mention it in here, that I do get that same hotspot, that's my only issue with this shoe. Like you said and we said in the review, a bit roomy. But I just love the ride of it so much.
Pity Skechers are so difficult to get hold of here in Europe through running stores/sites. The Maxroad 5 is currently available in my country from the official Skechers site for €153 which works out at $182!!! Gonna wait for Running Warehouse to start selling them.
I love these shoes and would love to find something similar feeling for trail running. Suggestions? Currently I swap between Topo Mt-4 for buffed out trails and Hoka Zinal for technical stuff.
I run at a pace of 5.40- 7.40 min/km..pls assist me which is the best? Go run ride 9 or max road 5? My priority will be comfort up to marathon distance and also stable/ steady ride .Also, able to pick up the pace
Good review. I wasn't keen on version 4 because I didn’t think it had great cushioning throughout the whole stride. It kind of flattened out and then I had to work to complete my run. Would you say that this version is slightly more cushioned?
Thomas, I may have asked this before in Running Shoe Geeks, but what are the pluses/negatives in choosing this over the Go Run Ride 9, or vice versa? Similar shoes with similar purposes, or are they very different?
You wanna see rocker? Set the MaxRoad on a table, lift the toes about 3-4", and let go. It will "rock" more than 10x before sitting still. Try that with some other brand "rocker" sole!
After running in these for 100+ miles, I don't think they are holding up to the hype. My biggest issue is that because Skechers doesn't make a wide, the upper has too much volume to accommodate a wider range of feet. I have to really cinch up and crank down the laces to get a comfortable lock down. Far more than any other shoe I run in. Even with significant cinching, the mid foot to toe box is still a little sloppy. That looseness paired with the plate creates an odd running sensation that at times doesn't feel great, especially on longer runs. Additionally, the pod geometry just isn't as good as the geometry on the "faster" models such as the Speed Freek.
Totally get what you're saying. Have close to 100 in them as well. Still love the ride, but the upper could definitely be improved as far as volume and fit. I still think the ride is good enough to override all that, hasn't been an issue if I really cinch everything down.
Fantastic shoe. Not sure how long the outsole will last though as it's already showing wear after 25 miles. The plate is more for stability than responsiveness, with instability being a complaint of the v4, but it does feel good.
Hi guys thanks for the review. I have a wide foot so should I go true to size of half size up? Also I couldn’t get on with the novablast 2 ( too soft and unstable) will the max rd 5 be better? Thank you. Ian 🇬🇧
Why is almost all the shoe reviews on youtube based only on running? Im not just thinking about this video or channel, but all? What shoes are best for walking? You still want to it to be lightweight, comfortable and have some bounce. Btw good channel.
Actually a good question. Honestly, it kind of could be if the stripped down the upper to cut weight. Would be comparable/better than the Brooks HE2 and HOKA Rocket X.
So the midsole may be durable, but the outsole is definitely not. I have about 76 miles into a pair of these and the outsole pods on the heel started separating from the midsole at only 55 miles. 55 Miles! Now I either have to cut them off or live with the sound and feel of dragging rubber. For reference, I am bigger at 209 pounds, and I have put some longer miles on rough country road, but no gravel and no trails, so your mileage may literally vary. That said, 55 miles is just ridiculous. I have a pair of Cliftons with close to 200 miles that is only just starting to see the same type of wear and a pair of Bondis with about 175 miles that look new in comparison. While they weren't disintegrating beneath my feet they were great, but even at the reasonable price of $130 I would go broke if I tried to keep buying these every other week. Super disappointing.
On my Razor 3 one of the rubber outsole patches on the heel started separating after only 30 miles. Used shoe goo to reattach. Since its been good as new and have had no future problems.
I'm having a hard time with trying to understand sketchers making the best running shoe. They have always been a comfortable, yet "dad shoe" kind of shoe to me for so long.

Since it has the same sole as the prior unit(unlike the r2 and max road 3) it can not be the best shoe. Nothing was good about the prior version. I hate to say it since I like the prior versions .

Nice work, gents! Loving the MaxRoad 5 so far…thinking of adding the Mach 4 and have heard they’re really comparable…how do you guys see these 2 shoes head to head
Since it has the same sole as the prior unit(unlike the r2 and max road 3) it can not be the best shoe. Nothing was good about the prior version. I hate to say it since I like the prior versions
.
Anyone knows some place to get them in Europe? Can't find them anywhere
I believe Running Warehouse will ship to Europe since they have a EU counterpart. Click the link in the description.
YES AGREED GREATEST RUNNING SHOE EVER👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 great review gentlemen 💪🏻👍🏽😍

Review from shoes to packman LOL
It happens
Be careful with Skechers shoes if you are a heel striker. You crash land every step..
Just got a pair of Max Road 5 and loving them, but still think I'll give the edge to the Novablast 2 😎😎😎

I wud still prefer the 1080v10.. max road is just too build up..
