- Hey everyone!
They say it's plated. They say it's even a carbon infused H plate. And I know it's in there although it's really hard to believe.
Skechers put together a fantastic maximalist allrounder shoe with the Skechers Max Road 5 and we're reviewing it today. After the Skechers Razor Excess and the Skechers SpeedFreek this is by far my favorite Skechers shoe and even more: it's one of the best surprises of 2021.
Disclaimer: this shoe was provided to me at no cost by Skechers via RoadTrailRun for my review in French that you can find here:
Thanks for tuning in and take care,
Alex

I bought this as my mid to long run distance shoe - anything over 13 miles. It's my first time in a Skechers and I'm blown away. It's a fantastic long run shoe. Keep up the great work sir!
Hi Jeremy! Thanks for stopping by and sharing with us your feedback on the shoe. I totally agree that it's a great long run shoe and while not my first Skechers it's by far my favorite. Take care
Fantastic work, Alex…your English is top notch :-) I’ve really been enjoying this shoe…I’m a bigger guy at 260 lbs and this just works for me…I’ll probably wear it down a bit quicker than normal because of that but that’s ok…I’m definitely thinking of adding a 2nd pair…I tried the Zoom X Invincible before sending it back…I much prefer the MR5 to that shoe…Skechers knocked it out of the park with this one
Hi Josh! I cannot thank you enough for that comment on my English...I'm doing my best for it to sound as natural as possible but sometimes it's even more obvious that I'm not a native speaker :-) I'm super curious how durable this shoe will be for you, please let me know if you remember! And I totally agree that this one kills the Invincible, but who knows maybe Nike can actually be inspired by this to improve their shoe. Take care
@@AlexFilitti About to hit the 50 mile mark and it is still holding up really well...some of the rubber pods show a bit of scuffing but purely cosmetic IMO. Curious as to how you think this shoe compares to the Hoka Mach 4 as I'm thinking of adding that to my collection next
Great review Alex! I would love to send you my current rotation. I'm a huge Skechers fan. Currently rotating: GRR9, MR5, Razor 3, Razor Excess, Forza 4, Speed Freek, Speed Elite, Speed 6. GRR9, MR5, Forza 4 and Razor Excess for daily training. Razor 3 for workouts (I use the Excess for workouts as well if they are longer). Speed Freek, Speed Elite, & Speed 6 for racing and very specific workouts.
Hi Rob! Wow that is a number of Skechers indeed :-) Please submit your rotation via the form in the description of the rotations videos!! I would love to share it and I'm sure people can takeaway a lot from it! How does the MR5 compare for a huge Skechers fan like yourself? Cheers
@@AlexFilitti Submitted! I'll try to get a photo today too. The MR5 is my favorite long run and daily training shoe. Soft without being mushy and unstable. The MR4 was kind of a mess, but Skechers nailed it with the 5. I even took it on a 10 mile trail route earlier this week and it held up well.
@@AlexFilitti Also, I recall that you are the reviewer from RTR that loves to put in your own insoles. I use custom orthotics in ALL my skechers. Even the Speed Elite and Speed Freek. A hair dryer and slow removal gets those insoles out no problem.
Broke my Skechers virginity with this shoe.....its lighter than my Adios 6, and only shoe I own that is light is the New Balance Beacon v1/v3. Very very good shoe!
Hey Kevin, while I did not break my Skechers virginity with it, it's actually the first Skechers I'm really enjoying so much. And yes getting that shoe at that weight is pretty amazing, that's a lot thanks to the Hyperburst compound but still great job from them :-)
Yes Alex ive got this shoe and loving it's fun bouncy ride. The only negative for me is the upper it's too comfortable for it's own good and could do with a bit more structure. To sum this shoe up in one word Fun.
Hi Keith, I agree with you to a certain extent but I also believe that this upper is a real upgrade compared to the previous one (that I haven't tested though). Yes it's fun and yet so versatile...how are you using it yourself? Cheers
@@AlexFilitti Im just coming back from a MCL injury and find it's ideal for those gentle to medium paced runs . Don't think it's a shoe for those fast runs. Hope you are fit and healthy.
I obviously subscribed to waaaay too many running and running shoe reviews youtube channels... but then again I finally subscribed to this channel as well 🤦🏾♂️
Many thanks and welcome :-) I hope you can hear/learn different things on this one! Take care
I love Skechers! Got this shoe this week. Did a 3 mile and a 7 mile this morning. Great max cushion shoe for daily, EZ, LR, and recovery days. Skechers has hit a home run with this one.
100% with you, this is the definition of a home run shoe. So little to improve that I simply hope they don't mess up v6 haha. Thanks for stopping by!
Max road 5 is an outstanding shoe. I am enjoying mine for easy and long runs. Super stable unlike the Novablast 1st or 2nd version. The wearing of the midsole near the pods is common and really will look worse then it is and doesn’t effect the ride, much like the Hoka Mach 3 or Carbon X2. Great video as always.
Hi Mike! It is an outstanding shoe indeed and I'm glad to hear the wearing will not affect the ride. Also there will be a battle of maximalist trainers soon on the channel and we'll see how it compares against the likes of Novablast but the MR5 will be a top contender for sure :-) Take care and enjoy your Sunday
I HATED how unstable that Novablast 1 was. Is the MaxRoad 4 unstable like that?
I've worn a few versions of this shoe. Light, cushioned. I think it was 1st or 2nd version I threw it on for a 5k and still broke 17 minutes without going all-out. Kind of interested in newest version, but I've been enjoying NB fuelcell rebel v2 so much.
Hi Judson, for me this this is way more versatile and capable than the Rebel v2 while still having a ton of cushion and bounce. I'd recommend giving it a try at your local store especially as you enjoyed previous iterations! If you do so down the road, let us know how it works for you! Cheers
Going to try this as a long run shoe, limited colours but hey, at least we can get them in the UK.
Hi Michael! It's a fantastic option for long runs, let us know how you enjoy it if/once you get it :-) (and if by limited you mean that this colorway is not awesome, I do agree haha)
How about this shoes with Hoka Mach 4. I want to know the different both shoes.. Txs...
This is softer and more "snappy". It also has a more pronounced rocker and a plate in the forefoot. Mach 4 is a little less versatile and while a great shoe not as fun as this.
Have you got a link to a spreadsheet for all of the durometer tests you've done? That'd be great to see I think :)
Hi Ross, I do have one but it's quite ugly and not shareable right now. However stay tuned because I will upload the results on a website soon so that everyone can have access to that at any time :-) Take care
Great review Alex, a bit late watching it but it was very helpful. I'm considering this shoe for my easy/long runs and I think I may give it a shot. Will have to wait until there's a few more miles in my current shoes, hopefully it may get a bit discounted - it's available in the UK for £130 which is possibly a bit steep for what it is (you can get the Rebel V2 for £85 or so right now...)
Hi Georgios and many thanks for the nice comment! Yes £130 is maybe too much but in that £100 ballpark it will be a killer shoe given the versatility it has. Let us know what you think if you pull the trigger at some point :-)
Bonjour Alex.
Bon dimanche, A
I don't know why skechers top end shoes are always 1 year late entering my country. The maxroad 4+ had just been sold here after so long.
Not good especially for me who would wait even longer so I can buy them in discounted price.
but for maxroad 5, I think I'd buy a pair on the first day they are sold here. Very interested (a proud former owner of the maxroad 3 here).
Don't worry, they're sold in many countries with a crazy delay. Here in the EU it's the same (if they're actually sold here one day...). I would love to hear how you enjoy this one compared to the MR3. Let us know when you have it if you remember ;-) Take care in the meanwhile
I do not feel the bounce, nor does it feel soft. Quite the contrary, I feel the landing is very hard. I wonder if I am just not landing hard enough to compress the midsole? Thanks for your review. It was as informative and entertaining as usual.
Hi Alex,
How thick is the removable insole pls?
And how would you compare the softness of its midsole to that of New Balance More V3?
Thanks
Seems like the Hyperburst on the Max Road 5 is more consistent with the Razor 3 than the Razor Excess. Not sure why the durometer on the excess is higher
And Excess seems closer to SpeedFreek...funny how they use the same compound in so many different ways (and I can imagine the SpeedFreek would feel so much better with a lower durometer).
Hi Alex, which one would be better for cushioned long runs of 20km plus? Max road 5 or Asics Novablast? What other shoes would you recommend other than these for the same?
GREATEST SHOE E.V.E.R.👏🙏🏼👍👍🏽💪🏼🙂🙏❤SKECHERS MAX ROAD !!!!!!!!!
Oh wow that is a statement! ;-) Especially given your RUclips handle haha. Which iteration did you prefer?
Very good review. I'm considering this or the Nike Invincible 2. I have a wide foot so I was wondering how the width is in the Skechers. Does it run a little wide or is it narrow? Does the mesh upper stretch out? I wear a 10 and considering a 10.5. Peace!
Hey Paul! It runs wide even as a TTS. I'd go for this over Invincible :-) Cheers
@@AlexFilitti Thanks! Peace!
Maxroad 5 vs Novablast 2: which is better as a max cushion allrounder?
Max road 5, much more stable and easy to run in.
Hi Hoeng! I believe Mike is right but to confirm that we'll have a battle between many maximalist daily trainers here on the channel "soon" (before the end of August for sure).
Cannot find my size anywhere in the color way I want. Assuming v6 is coming soon.
Haven't heard of v6 yet but you're right it should be around the corner
For a pace of 5:00/5:30 they are good ?
Oh yes
Loved the Max Road 4. Just one thing is that the outsole is not very wearable.
Hi Alex! very interesting shoe, how is it at 4.00 / km? Did you try it? Seem a competitor to my loved novablast and also to Nb more v3 ( seem best recovery shoe at this moment). How is going your training? Take care!
Hi Daniele, how are you? And how is going your training 6 weeks out from Rome? You must be in the middle of some intensive work right now haha. Thanks for asking, mine is going well still adapting to altitude and then two weeks full send here before going home. Yes I tried the skechers at even faster paces than 4'/km and it shows its limits somewhere below 3'40 for me (not responsive enough and the landing gets less appropriate then for my footstrike). Other than that I think indeed that this is a great competitor against the shoes you mentioned...and there will be a maximalist trainer battle on the channel "soon" (end of August at latest). Take care
@@AlexFilitti Training in altitude is great! Yes i am training hard even if i have to fight with my lower back problems. It is almost impossible for me to train in a perfect shape but that 's ok. I am getting old! Thanks for your video you are doing a great job. Take care
Trying to buy this in Spain, can’t find it.
I believe top4running has some Skechers and this one may come too...
Where did you bought those? I can't find it in any of the european websites I use...
Hi Gonçalo, it came from the US but I believe it should be available soon on EU sites (already in the UK if you're interested despite the risk of paying custom fees). Cheers
@@AlexFilitti hey Alex! Just bought it with a virtual UK adress and custom fees are €20. Just waiting for them to be delivered next week
This, the ASICS Novablast 2 or the Saucony Triumph 19?
Hi there! Good to see a comment from you ;-) Excellent question but it's a bit too soon for me to answer: there will be a battle of maximalist trainers here on the channel "soon" (before the end of August for sure). Take care
Do you know where to buy these in Belgium?
I believe Running Warehouse EU will carry them at some point this year and they deliver to Belgium! Hope this helps :-)
@@AlexFilitti thanks… I’m heading out to sea in two months, I hope to get them before that!
Why are these not in European stores yet
Hi Isak, I believe it should be available at some point at a few online dealers (RW EU maybe) but I don't understand either why they don't release it at the same time everywhere...
Are you French? Here in California, your accent sounds French to me.
Hi there! Yes I am. Trying my best to have as little French accent as possible but it is what it is! Thanks for watching
Unfortunately outsole durability equal zero
Thanks Moustafa! Based on your personal experience? I'd be interested to hear more! Thanks!
@@AlexFilitti yeah outsole wearing after 2 miles
