I’m Sue and I’m in northern Illinois. For years I lived in the south suburbs and grew in in-ground gardens and raised beds. It was time to downsize last year, so I moved into a duplex south of DeKalb. I have a small yard and am setting everything up in containers, so even though I’ve gardened for 50 years, I’m new to container gardening. I have Greenstalks, 5 gallon buckets, all kinds of pots, and I have 10 gallon grow bags. I’m still in the process of getting everything set up, but things are growing well as long as I keep everything watered. I’ve found that I have to water much more frequently, so when I finally get everything set up the way I want it, I’ll probably set up a watering system on an automatic timer. There’s always something new to learn with gardening!
Heya Garden Neighbor! I haven't had a change to my raised bed setup in a couple of seasons but each year I'm making tweaks to my container setup. Hopefully in the coming seasons, I'll settle in to my container setup too. Then I can decide if I will tackle irrigation 😊😊. Hey Chicago garden neighbor!💚
I also live in Chicago and mostly grow in 10 gallon grow bags. This year I have 150 tomato plants and 50 pepper plants in grow bags. (I know it sounds crazy but I don't believe you can have too many tomatoes. I can them and freeze dry them and give some away.) I also grow smaller amounts of beans, cucumbers, zucchini, and various herbs in containers. I also grow a lot of stuff in buckets.. I get the white buckets like you have from one of my neighbors who works at Jewel and I get kitty litter buckets from another neighbor. I plant all the same things I grow for myself in those buckets and give them away. It's basically an instant garden. It's all part of my devious plan to get my neighbors hooked on gardening so I have people nearby to talk to about my own obsession.
I should also mention that my garden space includes an empty lot next to my house. I don't own that lot (yet) but the person who does own it wasn't keeping it maintained. So I've been slowly taking over. The reason I use grow bags is because I could remove them if the owner complained. The owner doesn't even live in Chicago and nobody has ever seen him so I'm not too worried about it. I'm actually saving him money because he used to get $400 fines all the time for the grass being too tall.
Heya Chicago Neighbor Christine!! When I read 150 tomato plants and 50 pepper plants, there was an audible gasp. I LOVE IT! and I love that you're growing in the lot next door (I have an empty lot behind my home but it has become a parking lot of sorts, so there is that. Jewel is one of my spots for buckets 😀.
And a ready made container as a gift is such a wonderful idea. I've thought about that with the smaller buckets (think a lettuce plant or a kale in the spring or fall), but there is nothing like the gift of a tomato plant (I may need to borrow this idea)🍅🍅🍅.

My name is Sara I live in Florida's zone 9b. I grow in dollar tree laundry baskets with a trash bag to hold the soil. I also use gallon water jugs, and milk jugs. I build containers from pallets for moringa trees. I grow mostly longevity spinach, chinese spinach, sweet potatoes and bell peppers

In Maryland zone 7b . Grow container for veggie ( cucumbers, strawberries, and watermelon). Also grow trees in 50 gallon in hard containers so they do not adhere to hard containers. Doing well. Use irrigation helps and use mulch bottom of grow pot help with moisture. So far does well , also use shade cloth. Thanks for video. Also lots mulch on top used more nuggets this year.

I started with containers until we cut down several rotten trees in the backyard which gave me the opportunity to try in-ground with success! I produced over 200 lbs. in containers last season...even okra! B, I lost count of the containers a long time ago. If I counted today and had to report, I would probably be embarrassed! 🙄The City garden looks great! You must be a prolific leaf picker like me. I see nothing yellow or brown! Thanks always for the valuable content in video and on the podcast! Always look forward to it.
Yeah YarmouthBotanicals!! 200lbs of food, Wowzer! I wanted to track the pounds of my harvest this year. This might be the (only) upside of planting late..my harvest is just starting to come in so it's not too late to grab the scale, lol. Hey, I grow in zone 8b on the East Coast of Virginia, I rent, so I only use containers my first frost is usually around the end of November. I grow everything, fig trees in 18 and 20 gallon containers blackberries and blueberries veggies, herbs all the things and lots of soil. I have learned how to work with basic bag soil,adding my own amendments .My soil is constantly being reused and fertilized for each planting season. Love your channel 💯💋👍🏽❤️

Hello. I grow in ground and in containers zone 6b Southwest KS. We have extreme weather out here. High winds all year. It's like living in a blow dryer during the summer. However right now we have had some good rains and so are experiencing high humidity and we have already in June had over 100 degree days. I too grow in grow bags. Always looking for inspiration. Thank you. We also are having a grasshopper apocalypse this year.

Hi Batavia! Growing around Toronto in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 I grow on a balcony 15 storeys up, and use largely 12-16 inch pots, with some 6-8 inch pots for herbs so I can tuck them in weird places. This year I have been testing using a large tote bin in lieu of raised bed, and that has gone very well. I also bought a GreenStalk this year (with your code lol) which has been a GAME CHANGER!!
Smaller sized determinate tomatoes, and peppers have always been my favourite things to grow. However this year I experimented with some brassicas in the spring and they did spendidly! Bush beans and peas go in frequently to help with getting nitrogen back into the soil.
I completely agree with you, fertilizer and compost are so important and proper watering! With the proper care for the soil I am getting full size, healthy plants with ease!
I had a good laugh because I also use tomato cages for my peppers, and the painters tape trick! Garden twins! 😂 Amazing video, thanks for sharing!

I'm Jennifer, El Paso, Texas- zone 8b... the desert 🏜️. I'm still fairly new at gardening, but containers have some great advantages for me. Our native soil is very, very alkaline. With containers, I can control the soil, and I think another great advantage is that containers are portable, & can be moved into the shade. (Shade is a huge plus here!!) I've had success so far with 2 cucumber plants in a 10 gallon pot. Right now, I'm growing sweet potatoes and yams in 15 gallon pots. I have 3 pots- 2 pots contain just one sweet potato, the third has 2 yams. The vines look fantastic! They were planted May 11. Great tour!

I am growing almost everything that you are. However, you are so ORGANIZED!!!! I am in Georgia. We have a long growing season. I will tone it down and use the perimeter of my yard more than having pots all over the place. I have mostly containers and 4 growing beds. I got hip this year and started planting peppers in the front yard, mixed in with flowers. I am in a subdivision and wanted it to be less obvious. Thank you for the tour.

I’m growing north of Seattle in zone 8b, and I’ve been gardening for the past 13 years. I first started in containers and branched out to raised beds mixed with containers. I have containers of all sizes in my garden, both fabric and plastic. My favorites are fabric containers in the 10-20 gallon size. I prefer to put my peppers and eggplants in those. Thanks CharMac! I'm making a note about eggplant. I normally plant them in a raised bed and the plants can get pretty big. It would be great if I could park them in a couple of containers and use that raised bed space for something else. Adding to my list of things to think of for next year 😊. Hi Ms. B! I'm in Southern California, zone 9B. Experiencing Triple digits right now😢. I enjoy growing in grow bags, large 17-gallon totes, and containers. I grow tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers in 7 gallon grow bags. All my citrus trees, figs, mango, and avocado trees are in large containers. I also grow my corn, honey boat squash, red noodle beans, okra, and sweet potatoes in 17 gallons totes. I also have drip irrigation going to all my plants except for my fruit trees.
I also have 3 raised beds. My plan this late Fall is to remove the soil from these beds and just place as many grow bags inside.

In the meantime, cucumbers are officially back on my current day (or 2025) container garden list! 😊😊
For this fall, do you have plans for the dirt you're removing? Do you need to remove it? (I know you didn't ask but) Maybe use that super thick landscape fabric and then let the grow bags rest on top of those. I know you don't want to create water puddles but maybe..maybe, it could work.

Everything in my backyard is planted around the perimeter of the yard. Which were/are flower beds. Flower beds with a few bushes. Because I'm renting my house I decided to take advantage of the available space. So, I do have plans to do what you suggested. 😊 Although I will still have to remove some of the soil before laying the landscape fabric.

I just started container gardening in South Florida Zone 10. It's all on the balcony of my condo. So far, it's been peppers, bush beans, and herbs. Plan to add a lot more in the fall as that's my prime growing time due to the brutal summers here.

Greetings fron zone 7B in Greateter NYC. I grow in approximately 60 containers. They range in size from 20 gallons where I grow potatoes and personal size mellons, ten gallons for tomatoes with a companion herb or flower, 5 gallon food safe buckets for eggplants and peppers with carrots and 3 gallon for seasonal flowers. I have four Greenstalks were I grow herbs and leafy greans along with dwarf varieties of anything. Not included in the count: I also have perennial herbs in plastic flower pots. Hoping that you growing season is a great one!

I love to hear about the tweaks you've made like growing personal size melons and my fav dwarf size anything 😊😊 the only perennial herb I have is oregano (which reminds me that I need to cut and dry some) and it's in a corner of a couple of raised beds. What herbs are you growing that are returning. Our winters here in Chicago can get a little colder (I'm in 6a) so what returns for you may not return for me but I'm Uber curious. 😊thanks for watching and commenting! ~Batavia
@BBettaGarden Holala! My perennials are: Thyme, hyssop, lemon balm, bee balm, garlic chives, mullein, ginger( bring inside during winter), camomile. Flower: Shasta daisy.

I think all mine are 5 gallon. All in all doing pretty well.

Hey Laura!🛎️ glad to see you around this way! you know I remember that question. I think we talked about it as if it was in a raised bed. If the root knot nematodes were on plants in containers, we've just unlocked another benefit of growing in containers... if there is a soil borne issue..you can discard the soil (adding that to my notes 😊).

If you remember I was doing a cover crop of Nema Gone marigolds. Well they weren’t germinating fast enough so I went w covering them in thick black plastic. Turning the soil every couple weeks. (Two 4x16 beds) Hopefully that will fry them in our 100° Oklahoma heat. 🔥 🥵
Fingers crossed that come spring I can safely plant in them.

There’s a horticulturalist here in town (central NC, zone way-too-hot) with those root knot nematodes. Apparently they are somewhat common here on former tobacco fields. She still plants flowers and veg in-ground but has moved to containers for delicate (fussy?) tomatoes. Good luck to you!
Hey B! 😊Your garden is simply beautiful. I live in the high desert zone 8B CA and I use the ground for some plants, but grow mostly everything in pots and containers-different sizes. Right now I've really minimized my garden, it's really hot right now, and I guess I'm just not feeling it. I will do better in Autumn, which I'm looking forward to.🌱

I love your garden. I love growing in containers up on my deck and raised beds in the garden. My favorite things to grow in bags are my mints, turmeric and ginger. I love my patio blueberries grow bag. I love My green stalks, 2 are strawberries, 1 is micro tomato’s and the other two are herbs. I also have two horse watering tubs with my lettuce and kale ❤ Thank you for sharing. It’s beautiful

I love your videos currently growing somethings in my apartment balcony in Brooklyn, NY. Last years was the first year, a lot of learning. This second year feeling more confident and have about 7 pepper plants growing out of containers , 2 tomatoes plants, 1 cucumber, 1 bean , some flowers! Had a lot seeds that produce plant and praying my landlord will not complaints and instead ask for vegetables ! Love watching and learning with your videos ! ☺️🙏🏾

It’s my second year gardening in containers, I retired last year and started off small last year. This year I am growing 6 varieties of tomatoes, 5 varieties of green peppers, four 7 gallon grow bags for my potatoes. I also have a vertical green stalk and am growing carrots, flowers, potatoes also, herbs ect I grew a lot of pollinator flowers & strawberries. I planted garlic last fall & waitng for them to die off soon. Since I am in Long Island, New York zone 7B. so I will wait until August to start succession planting for fall crops. Learned from other RUclipsrs about using shade cloth which is a game changer especially since it’s in the high 80’s right now! Thanks for giving us information about using containers! God bless! 😊❤️

I'm in 7B/8A. My first frost has changed in the past couple of years. It was Nov. 4th However, it's been now Oct 23rd. Last frost is now Apri 12th. It used to be March 23rd. I grow in 8 gallon totes and in ground. My favorite container veggie to grow is spinach. I'm able to actually get some to eat, before it bolts. But, ONLY, in my totes 😊

Hi! I'm gardening in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and my zone is 6A. I've been growing off and on for about 5 years. I grow everything in containers. My containers range from 2 gallons to 20+ gallons. I grow peppers, cukes, corn, tomato, squash, greens, cabbage, onion, melon, and more. I use stackable planters for my herbs and I also co plant them with some of my veggies. My favorite flowers are zinnias and sunflowers but I grow several types of flowers to keep the pollinators happy.

I grow in containers and the metal raised beds. The containers I use are the grow bags. I am in Colorado an in zone 5b. The grow bag size I use are 15, 20 and two 40 gallon bags. gallons. We using two greenstalks this year and the results are so so. Lol. Every year is a journey, and this year seems to me ore challenging in the containers than last year. I think due to the inconsistent weather this year. Every day is taking a while to warm up. Kinda strange here in Colorado. Looking to move. LOL

Heya Lori! Such a good suggestion. There is a part of the video (I might have cut it out) where I mentioned a few other containers and I was talking about those rectangle window boxes. I added them to those metal plant stands that are typically used for indoor plants. Anywho, I've had some great success with lettuce and even carrots one year. Radishes are such a good idea too! I like growing potatoes in 10 gallon grow bags. I have 4 bags and I usually try for 3 plantings of potatoes a year. I also grow carrots and parsnips in 5 gallon bags.
I'm in Southern Missouri (zone 6b). My last frost date is April 10 and my first is October 22.

We're pretty close with last frost dates but I'm thinking summer may be a tinge hotter for you all and maybe your winters are consistently cold like here in Chicago (I could have this wrong though). Are you planting potatoes at 3 different times a year? If so, about when are you planting and harvesting?
@@BBettaGarden We have been in the 80s and 90s all June, but we are getting a good amount of rain this year. I'm so thankful. July has been in the upper 80°s - mid 90°s. Last year we were in the 100°s. Our winters fluctuate a lot. Snow usually melts within a day. In Missouri they say if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes. Our winters are pretty mild except in January and the first two weeks of February--we have ice storms and a few days of minus degree temps. We often see some nice sunny 70° temps around the end of February, going into March. It's deceiving because we can still have snow in May. (This is why we have tornadoes.) You can garden with protection. My brassicas went out the last week of February this year.
I put my first potatoes in grow bags the end of February, knowing they will probably need protection. I take them early as new potatoes, replanting with my second crop in May. The third crop can go through October or early November with some protection.

@@BBettaGarden It's good for me in some ways doing my garden on the rooftop it protects my plant from a lot of Insect and disease. my biggest problem is the sun tends to get really hot so I have to use shade cloth. So far for instance in a few hour we are expecting a category 4 hurricane heading to our island Seoul I am here trying to get some of my plan To Safety..

Your garden is always so lovely! I’m in zone 7 and I have a lot of containers between my beds and on my porch. I mostly have 5 gallon grow bags and 5 gallon buckets, but I also have smaller decretive pots as well as some larger wicking tubs. In the smaller decretive pots I do a variety of herbs. In the larger containers I mostly do peppers and whatever tomatoes I didn’t have room for. The tomatoes do just so-so, but the herbs and peppers really thrive in the containers. This year I tried growing cabbage in grow bags and it has also so well so far.

Your garden is gorgeous! I’m in MidAtlantic PA zone 6b-7a. I grow in-ground, raised beds and yes! containers. I’m in the mode of taking unusual “things” & making them into containers. For example: I have some old industrial ceiling light fixture boxes (the lights you see in schools or warehouses) and I’m going to build a large ladder like fixture, attach the light boxes and transplant my strawberries into them as my strawberries have outgrown their 30 gallon grow bag. Rebecca B. From California growing in 9B. I grow tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and potatoes in bags. I use the bags that have the plastic lined sides because it gets extremely hot here and the regular bags definitely dry out faster. I use 10 gallon for peppers, 15 gallon for egg plants. I use 15 gallon for determinate tomatoes. I use 20 gallon for indeterminates and potatoes. I really appreciate your channel 😊

Hi, I'm in WI, zone 5a. I've had 9 grow bags (the size you have there at the beginning) that I've had different varieties of blueberries growing in since 2017. Every spring I think I should redo the soil, but then they produce all these blueberries!
I like that I can move them around the garden, then in the winter I can put them all close together and cover up with leaves.

I’m in PA zone 6b/7a. I grown in pots and grow bags, I guess 20 gallon and a little smaller. This year I’m growing 2 varieties of tomatoes, 2 varieties of cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, sweet potatoes, beets and 7 different herbs. My lettuce and spinach are harvested already.

I grow a lot of peppers from seed. I noticed some hot peppers tend to be real slow and then late July/early August they just explode.
Hots are definitely slow growers and then boom! I grew lemon drop one year and watched it creep along and then I had more than I knew what to do with 😊.
Im in zone 5a in southern Wisconsin. I have a balcony garden and use a wide variety of containers from 2 3x3 foot containers, a couple of 20 gallon containers a 10 gal, a few 2.5 gallons, a 5 gallon and some rectangular containers. I'm currently dealing with too much rain so am worried I'm going to have to start over on several plants. I don't have the space to do inside starting and didn't have the funds to do plants this year so everything is by seed this year.

I hope you don't have to start over. For the seed starting, have you tried "winter sowing" I did a version of it this Spring and plan to do more next winter.

I live in Indiana, zone 6b. I grow all my tomatoes (mostly dwarf varieties) in containers. Most are in 5-gallon buckets, but I also have some containers my husband made by cutting lengthwise down 55-gallon plastic barrels. Those have 3-4 dwarf tomatoes each. Almost everything I grow is in containers except for a couple of in-ground beds. Lettuce, kale, chard, peas, beans, peppers, herbs, potatoes, carrots, etc. are in containers. I love being able to customize the soil for the plants being grown, and being able to move the smaller containers if something seems to not be doing well in a particular location, or if I simply want to change things around.

@@BBettaGarden I am growing around 9 varieties of dwarf tomatoes this year, (I've kind of lost count), and this is really only my second year getting serious about it. The ones I am most looking forward to this year, because of recommendations from those who have grown them are: Nano's Meatball, Sweet Scarlet, Purple Rain (as opposed to Purple Reign), Waratah and Awesome. I like what I call Loud Flavor in my tomatoes, with more of a sweet note. My favorites from last year were Maralinga, Boronia, and Uluru Ochre, even though the plants didn't do exceedingly well. I have spent the past few months gaining knowledge about growing better ones, and so far this year, they are looking good (knock on wood!)
As for the taste, certain varieties are just as flavorful as full-sized plants, and others are lackluster, like those of some full-sized plants. I find Tomatofifou to give a good description of the varieties, and have spent waaay too much time on their site, researching. I am also a part of a FB tomato group (Tomato Lovers Collective and Swap!) that shares seeds and experiences with all the tomatoes, grown in a wide variety of climates.
I would suggest you think about the flavors and colors you love and find ones that fit that bill. And if you want, I would be happy to share some of the seeds I harvest from this year's plants.

Hi. Love container gardening, I've had so much success with it. I use raised beds, large planter, grow bags, pallets, etc. I grow flowers, veggies, fruits and have a couple of trees (cherry/apple). I am on the Southside of Chicago Zone 6. I got into gardening during COVID and I find it so peaceful. It is truly my calling, I let nature do her thing. I'm still learning and your channel gives me so many ideas and different ways of growing things.

LOVE both your attitude and your clever use of space! ❤ I am also a fan of containers. I bought new 25 gal grow bags for corn (2), raspberries (5), petite watermelon (1), cantaloupe (1), blackberry (1) and sweet potatoes (4 bags w/ 4 slips each)…..others not yet used. I grew potatoes in 7 gal grow bags last year - that was a bust. Growing this year, 4 into each 20-25 gal plastic nursery pot. With the heat and this year’s drought, watering seems to be all I do! I offer an opinion that the icing buckets are too narrow for high potato yields. I’ll be curious to watch your progress. I have 5 Vego raised beds with various veg (1 is just greens grown for my meat rabbits). I’ve got 2 Green Stalks with 3 more on order - 1 for strawberries and 1 for salad greens. I’d like to try onions and green beans in the new ones 👍🏻. Vertical planters require WAY more water than I expected. It’s an every-day-with-hose event. 🤷🏻♀ This year I bought ‘Patio Baby’ eggplant and highly recommend it. Pretty plant and flowers and then….teeny mini eggplants 1.5-2” long! 🤣 I bought a patio blueberry (delish) and patio raspberry to add to my collection. Getting started now on Summer Sowing Part 2. Winter will be lots of root veg, chard, kale & spinach. I am hating the Leaf Footed and squash bugs right now…..grrr. I’m in central NC and the weed pressure is WAY TOO intense here. CONTAINERS WORK! Sounds like you have a food forest! And I'm encouraged as I read you and others are growing various types of fruit in containers! I feel like that is definitely something I am 'missing' in my space. Since this video, I'm at every other day for my GreenStalks, specifically for the tiers that I steal have leafy greens (I wonder if those root systems are just larger). I did some weeding last week and this weekend in between my neighbors fence and the wooden cages in the backyard and it's a chore but I really need to try to manage them because they grow so tall that they create shade for what's growing in those beds. And then once the weeds go to seed, oh me, oh my.

@@BBettaGarden nothing special for the tomatoes. I do let them get nice and tall before I transplant them outside. It’s mostly cherry varieties, bury the stems deep as I can, after removing the bottom branches. I’ve struggled with slicers, just getting a few here and there. This is my next project, find varieties of slicers for next year that produce heavily. If you have any recommendations, I’d love it!

It's completely preference but I like 1 to 2 types of herbs in a container and 7 gal and 10 gal grow bags have done really well for me. 10 gallon is really nice because so many things can grow in them, 1 pepper plant (some people may plant 2), 1 tomato or a couple of potato plants. If you have time, scan through the comments. Lots of feedback on the size containers people use for specific veggies, fruit and herbs.
I leave most of those buckets out in the elements all year and I'd say they each last a few years at a minimum. I do find myself replace a bucket maybe once every year or two because the top rim part stays to crack.

Hey there! I didn't do it myself. The gentleman that built my deck/porch built it on top of the raised beds that were there. It is one of my fav projects from the garden though 😊. Good luck with the rabbits!

I'm here in Chicago, WESTSIDE! I plan to make a container garden, I've purchased (3) 30-gallon tote food-grade containers. I will use one container for mixing my soil, I will have to watch your video on mixing soil. I want to do direct seed sowing, lettuce, cukes, tomatoes, and beans (bush). I'm not too fond of critters, how can I stop the critters from attacking my container garden? I just started watching your videos since you're in my growth zone. Heya Chicago neighbor! So glad you to see you around these parts :-). Cukes and beans will love this weather, tomatoes too. You could start a dwarf variety or a micro variety from seed and produce tomatoes. But if you want to grow a full size tomato plant or even a cherry tomato, I would say pick up a plant. We won't have enough time to start tomato plants from seed and for them to grow and produce before the cold comes here in Chicago. For lettuce, maybe start them from seed later in the month (they like the cooler temps).

When I search out things like this, I typically start with the plant name (or other details) and include "extension service" in my search, ex. 'stevia extension service'. Searching that way points me to local extension services in the U.S. which are tied to a state university. I feel comfortable with most things I find on extension services websites.
