Batavia you have a little something for everyone. I love it! Such efficiency and you waste nothing! Luckily we have had a mild spring.... so brassicas haven't petered out as quickly.

I used a paper lawn and leaf to cover carrot seeds and that has been one of the only times I’ve successfully and very quickly germinated the seeds. They’re tricky!

Next year, I'm definitely going to try the method you use for planting your potatoes.
Im done planting anything at this time. We're in triple digits. 😢 I do not like summer. Especially Southern California summer in the Valley areas.

The show starts around July 😂😂 you'll need to turn your hazards on so folks know to go around you, lol. P.S. I have a couple weeks more of digging in dirt before I'll feel like I can move into maintenance and succession planting, oh my!💚

Welcome! I'm in IL, Chicago and zone 6a. I will occasionally have a plant bolt but most times, I'll have the same brassicas in my garden until the Fall or winter if I'm using cut/come again. Definitely a blessing! 💚💚
Do you leaf mulch your beds, does it keep them cool & moist? My beds/ soil dry out so fast, trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Your front yard flower garden is fabulous!❤
Hey there! Yep, I've been using shredded leaves as mulch the last few years and I definitely think it helps keep the soil cooler and retains more of the moisture. Wishing you a great garden year! 💚
Would you let me know where you got those mesh screens for your beds? The hood bunnies in my neighborhood try and eat everything. I would love to buy screens that keep them out. Squirrels too. Thank you in advance.

Your slugs must be very considerate! (Or else, afraid of heights?) Mine will climb *anything* and apparently no height is too great for them if they can get a foothold and if there's a meal to be had for the effort.
I'd never heard of "wirestem" (thankfully, in one way; in other ways, it's good to know what it is and why or how it can occur in a garden. And yes, I had to look it up.)
Your dahlias come up again after a Chicago winter??!? Dang! Color me completely awe-struck. I've always understood that in our cold-hardiness zones (6A, 6B), dahlia tubers must be lifted and stored in a cool, dark place, probably packed in vermiculite; then replanted the following spring.
That yellow-flowered ground cover: that isn't creeping St. John's Wort, is it? Whatever it is, it looks like it would be very enjoyable to have in the garden or in the front landscaping, unless it's an aggressive spreader?
I've only just seen the corn I sowed starting to sprout. So, so far behind on everything to do with the garden! Yours looks great, and makes me want to get busy *building* garden structures!

I looked up wirestem this spring since I had it a couple of years ago too. Always something new to fight 😊
I looked up a pic of the St. John's Wort and the leaves look a bit different. I think it's Japanese Stonecrop (Sedum ellacombianum). But then again, I'll see it in a garden center this summer and it will probably have a different name 😊.
I've of course been behind for Spring plantings but I felt like I was on top of summer..and then June came in and I realized, I need to step it up a bit (we're still getting 50 degrees nights..granted it's 57 or 58 but that's still cool). Anywho, we'll get the things done we can get done and enjoy the fruits of that labor.

@@BBettaGarden H'r'mm. Funny peculiar, or funny ha-ha? To me, it's not either way funny. Those slugs and their shelter-carrying kin aren't welcome. I know: they have a purpose in nature, but there's plenty of nature other than in my garden so they could just go almost anywhere else.

Well, as a groundcover it's certainly pretty and if it doesn't grow taller than the 6" (six inches) limit my municipality permits for lawns and lawn substitutes, I'd love to plant it on the tree lawn. If it does grow taller, but wouldn't mind being mowed to about six inches high I'd be deeply grateful to know what it is. That's if you don't mind sharing.

Hi, I'm new here. Nice garden. I like what you have done to the sidewalk. Did you have to get a special permit to plant in that area? I know the land belongs to you but I know there are sometimes ordinances that prevents certain things.
Heya!! Glad you were able to check my space out💚. I didn't get a permit but I can't say whether Chicago issues them. Every year I think about what would happen if the city needed to do work around that area (I'd be heartbroken 🥹if I ever have to dig it up but it's a risk I run).

Such a beautiful an organized garden . Mine is really all over the place and I've made a few mistakes but I'm learning and grateful. But I do have a question I planted some hibiscus bushes last year that gave me so many flowers I loved it but it doesn't seem like they are coming back I'm in zone 6a in Illinois near the Wisconsin boarder are they a plant that comes back or should I dig them up and trash them? Heya! I focus on keeping the front yard orderly and the backyard is a maze of everything through the spring. I pull things together once we get into summer 😊. For the hibiscus. Do you still have the tag or container or remember the variety. There are some hibiscus that are annuals and won't return, and then there are a bunch of varieties that are perennials. I originally was buying the annual kind without even realizing perennials existed.
@BBettaGarden no I don't have any of that for the hibiscus that was my first time buying them and I really didn't know much about annuals and perennials till this year but they really look dead dead 😔when I do buy again I will definitely check that and zoning too.
While the weather has been wonky this spring, I'm thinking if they were find to come back, they would have by now. I hope you find/plant some perennials because they get bigger and even more beautiful each year! 💕💚

Heya! Thanks! I'm 99% sure it's Japanese Stonecrop (Sedum ellacombianum). I dont have the tag anymore but between my checks online and in the garden centers, it looks nearly identical to what's in my yard. 😊

Canning and freezing for sure! I'm also looking to dig into dehydrating and fermenting a bit more.
