But in the last few weeks he's suddenly developed consistency. There appears to be a new confidence in him. For me I share what everyone is saying here. This type of tennis is what fans want to see. Great shotmaking with that backhand. Hopefully he can keep this going into the majors next season. Certainly a talent that has potential to be a slam winner.
The fact that he won that match with a backhand volley says it all. He’s been doing great with that backhand. I just hope he doesn’t become like Gasquet: having a nasty backhand and a liability of a forehand. Great win for the Italian!
There's so much effortless power in a good one-handed backhand, the ball easily comes out of the strings with more power and weight. And there's the big difficulty in reading where the shot will go. That's why it can be so devastating. Then, there's the elegance too... but that's not the motivation laying behind the choose of playing the one-handed backhand.🙂
@@pierdomenicosommati443 One-handers also have much higher topspin rate than two-handers (a really massive difference, as hawk-eye stats have been showing for years), which, together with much higher sidespin, push the opponents off the court much like a kick serve. They also hit sharper angles more easily and more often. These are actually the most typical traits of a modern one-hander, and, strangely enough, the most ignored ones.
@@J.-M. Yeah that's very true. The ball comes out with much more spin and heavier, especially in modern one-handed backhand (in the '80/'90 version of this shot, it often was less so). What seems hard to understand for many people (and for many tennis teachers too) is that a very well developed one-handed backhand can provide a player with a very dangerous weapon, and that this task (developing it very well), if not so easy, is definitely possible anyway. The two-hander is easier? True, especially in the beginning, but NOT for everybody... a certain percentage of players never feel really good with it, and it definitely shows at every possible level. When they're kids, inducing/convincing them to continue with it "because it's the most modern backhand" (but the true reason actually is the fear of doing something that's a little bit more of a long term investment), is just silly, these young players will remain with a inadequate, useless shot forever, which will hinder and limit their possibilities. And it's even more absurd when you look at how dangerous is a well developed and confident one-hander, especially if it's adopted at a very young age.
@@pierdomenicosommati443 Yes, exactly. Some coaches (like Nick Bollettieri) say the problem with a one-hander is that parents want kids to be successful immediately, from the very young age at kids' tournaments. Which means that coaches have to teach kids the two-hander, because kids lack the strength and height to hit the one-hander well, so their results in matches, junior tournaments would suffer a lot for some time. Parents are not interested in explanations like "but if you let them develop the shot for a couple of years, when they get bigger and stronger, it will change". They want success right here, right now, even if results at kids' tournaments are irrelevant. As a result, people often report that coaches at tennis academies refuse to teach the one-hander to anyone, because they want to keep their job, they basically ban the shot completely. It there is a player with a one-hander, they tell them they have to switch to a two-hander, regardless of how good or bad their backhand is. If they don't change to a two-hander, they refuse to coach them. But I think the problem is also that there are very few remaining coaches who can actually teach the shot, who actually know how to hit it and teach it. If you listen to the coaches, experts, sometimes, it's obvious they have no clue about the modern one-hander at all, they basically repeat all the old cliches from the 20th century from the wooden racquet era, which have zero relevance for a modern 21st century one-handed backhand (basically, the opposite is true about the modern one-hander for all the old 20th century textbooks "facts" about a one-hander, all the "it's good for slice and volleys, for fast surfaces, a flat stroke" etc.). They really have no clue what a modern 21st century one-handed technique is, even if they can so often see it from top players at tournaments. Incompetence is the biggest problem in my opinion.
@@pierdomenicosommati443 By the way, this also explains why almost all one-handers born after 1990 (like Dimitrov, Tsitsipas or Shapovalov) were coached by their parents as kids, or, in Thiem's case, also by a very eccentric old-school coach. Kids who want to play with a one-hander are basically on their own, outside the mainstream tennis system.

Honestly, as an old school tennis fan I really think we should tone down the racket technology a little bit. It's now all about hitting as hard as you can and not much else in terms of variation. Serve and volley is virtually extinct and we are left with these ridiculous baseline rallies. Even 20 plus years ago you didn't see this.
If Thiem has time to prepare then his one hander is the best on tour right now,. When they have to hit it defensive or on the run, it's a tossup between Shapo and Musetti I think. They seem to be able to take the ball on the rise no matter what
