One reason is there are lots of no call no shows where they will call you on your day off. The other reason is people quit constantly and so they make people cover those shifts. Hopefully, this helps Lowes hire experienced employees. I rarely shop at Lowe’s because they have the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced anywhere. Many times, there are ZERO cashiers, high school students in departments who have no idea how to help a homeowner with products - Lowes does not educate their employees on products. My sister in law works at Menard’s FT now because it pays more than her job with the Sheriff’s department. And, she makes $3 more an hour when she works weekends.

We do 12 hour days at a 4 day on 4 day off basis. This works very well for all of us. You get paid slightly more than 40 hours per week on average, and it leaves you to enjoy a small holiday on any week you choose. Also, if someone calls in sick and you get called in, you'd still have 3 days to yourself.
Granted that this works only for a 12 or 24 hour operation for a larger company. The way you roster people's initial days are key, so you can minimise calling someone in when they are on day 2 or 3 of their 4 days off.

I work at a big name craft store. Tuesday and Wednesday I worked from 4:30-9, Friday I worked 11-7, and today I’m working 10-6. My schedule is never the same, and I think the last time I got a Saturday off was on my honeymoon a month or two ago, and only because it was my honeymoon. Thankfully though, we get Sundays off.
Edit: Once the schedule is made, it’s nearly impossible to trade shifts because the hours are so variable. So if something comes up and you really need a day off, you just have to pretend you’re sick and call in.

Recently I have noticed that the employees are more engaging and helpful and even some long time people there I know have ifnored me for years are actually now coming up to me and asking if I need any help. There has obviously been an emphasis on better service. I wonder if its driven by corporate or just better local management.

Amazon delivery drivers usually follow the same structure. 10 hour shifts 4 days a week. Best work life balance I've had. Some DSPs also offer daily pay. I was payed for 10 hours no matter how fast I finished my route. Which actually encouraged me to go faster and do better. Because it made me feel like I was making more money for the amount of time invested. Increasing my productivity as a whole. If I was payed hourly I would actually be incentivized to go as slow as possible to maximize my earnings. How can one of the scummiest companies on the face of the planet get it right? The comments of the old scheduling system are true, I would work 9 days straight never knowing what shift. It could be 2-11 and 5am-3 the next. But it really hasn’t gotten that much better. The 4 day work week is only offered to FT and they’re doing away with those positions and going to majority part timers who they only schedule 3-5 hr shifts. Almost every day there is opener and one closer. And some don’t have that so it’s one employee having to work 3 departments. The 4 day choice also means you can choose a shift window if it’s available and you give up your Friday-Sunday. Those are off limit days to choose from. Basically you have random shifts and days and atleast a weekend thrown in There or set two days and no weekends. Supervisors still have rotations for now but Fridays were eliminated from them and you get 1 weekend per month. Shift times are random and “to the needs of the store” as is everything else there. If you want hours and any sort of personal life lowes is not the place. Yes they pay more than most but compared to the other major retail and grocery stores near by they don’t pay enough. People make more money at H‑E‑B to bag groceries than a lowes employee is is forced to lift items ranging from lumber to concrete to large appliances and majority of the time alone. Along with try to attend to customers and get yelled at for not making sell’s. They say they care about the employees but until they see what they’ve turned their store into first hand running people like dogs they’ll never change. That’s corporate for you.

I have worked in logistics for 28 years and what I have saw with my own eyes is mind blowing. This 4 day work week and work at home is causing a lot of the shortages and delays that are being blamed labor shortages. Customers vendors and people I work with could care less doing the right thing for anybody else but themselves. You cannot find any body past noon on Thursday. I know of air conditioning equipment sitting in warehouse that need to be installed Friday but here in august on Sunday it is sitting because of a 4 day work week employee.

Doing manual scheduling for that many EEs and nuances doesn’t make sense. What does make sense is using tech then sweeping it as a people leader to make adjustments to nuances that the tech misses.
The tech needs to be optimized or replaced if it doesn’t permit rules to be entered (ex/ Every third weekend off, 4 hour shifts only). Add in union and non-union staff, seniority, student study permit max hours, injury restrictions and unconscious bias, the tech helps when used correctly. Incorporate the tech with an LMS and you’re golden (Ex. FL driver license)
