      Buy a Bambu printer with AMS. Voron with ERCF will still waste some filament. For my Voron around 1m.

    Its not a bad price compared to the previous existing solutions, I was thinking about making one of those DIY filament joiners to get some use out of all the tiny leftover filament spools I have sitting around but this looks like a easier way to do it than hacking something together
    I think the only complaint I can think of is that it uses a barrel jack to standard USB, in 2024 these things should just be USB C, with USB C PD they could of drawn more power too instead of being limited to 5v 2a, that could of raised the price a bit but honestly I'd be fine with the tradeoff

      Trying to make things go wrong, maybe:
      - in an extruder with a very narrow filament path
      - a multi material system that pushes and pull the filament
      - a janky reverse-bowden where the filament gets bent pretty heavily, to see if it breaks.
      That's questions I have 😛

    Can we get the slicers to create a "color length cut list" to make a multi-color print using this? With pre-cut lengths of filament of the correct lengths? EDIT: Should be easy to make a script for this... Just sum all extrusion commands between each M600 or T0/T1/T2 command... EDIT2: On second thought. A completely unreasonable amount of splicing to be done for a normal multi-color print...

  • @andreanardi6301

  • @SanguineVoyeur

    Something like this might be useful for creating extra large spools. You'd need to find a way to wind them, but just take two 2kg rolls and connect the ends. Mainly for very large single prints though

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  Месяц назад

      But you can do this only if you unroll/roll them.

  • @75keg75
    @75keg75 Месяц назад +1

    Can you reuse the cut tube? No reviewers have done that.
    I’m thinking it may cause flashing if it not aligned well. As it would allow spools to be joined rather than just remnant pieces.
    Is there a way of investing the lap more like a scarf joint l….

    • @ChannelRejss
      @ChannelRejss Месяц назад +2

      Many filaments don't bond together even when heated. It is the same reason why people like to use PLA as zero clearance supports for PETG prints and vice versa.

  • @Mark_5150
    @Mark_5150 Месяц назад

    I've manually spliced rolls together when I see one is running out. I simply heated one end with a lighter and touched it to the other end and sanded them to remove the blob. It worked fine but it's probably not perfect because the diameter might have changed. I can see how this would be cleaner. Too bad they can't make it not use the teflon tubes.

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  Месяц назад

      They could, but in that case, some water cooling should be integrated.

    I saw another review where the welded filament was getting stuck whilst printing, I suspect he wasn't mitring the ends with a 45° angle as the joint was fat, I just use my AMS and set it to continue with another spool when it runs out.

    I was hoping, that the welder would not need the tube. To remove the tube I need one side open. However sometimes I would want to weld the filaments during print time. Well even most of the times. Pausing for filament change may introduce artifacts on print, so I would like to weld on the go.

  • @klave8511
    @klave8511 Месяц назад

    Great review! Ideally the Teflon would be in the press but I suspect they tried that and reverted to the supplied tubes. Did you measure the joint thickness, in a (tight) Bowden arrangement the joint can get stuck, or even in the extruder if the joint is too thick.

    • @MyTechFun
      @MyTechFun  Месяц назад +1

      I didn't measure it. But until the tube is in good shape, it's fine.

  • @TNX255
    @TNX255 Месяц назад

    Some time ago I watched a video on youtube about this procedure by someone (unfortunately can't remember the channel atm) who also connects nylon fishing line together in the same way - of course without a dedicated device, just a heat source and a teflon tube. His suggestion was to cut the filament at a 90 degree angle (ie. straight, flat end) as it is easier to hold and push together during heating than two ends cut at 45 degree angles. Did you try this, and if so, is it easier and does it affect the strength of the join?

  • @dheibeljr

    Oh god Sunlu. Its USB powered. Just put a USB port on the back. We get a stupid barrel jack to usb cable that will just get lost instead of using any USB cable that we already have.

    • @TNX255
      @TNX255 Месяц назад

      With a barrel jack you can use any 5V 2A PSU instead of just a USB one. There are nice little power adapters that come with changeable plugs that cost very little and are very handy for powering many types of little devices. I'm sure most makers have at least one around for occasional use.
