Earlier this week I said fuck it and bought an autograph/selfie combo with legendary voice actor Tom Kenny who’s coming to my local Comic Con in a couple weeks. Now to figure out which SpongeBob thing I want to have him sign. UPDATE: I picked my original copy of Battle for Bikini Bottom on the PS2. Line was about 5 hours long but it was totally worth it.
I love media and specifically in the horror genre. I’m obsessed with weird and creepy movies. I too, have two friends. And I very rarely ever actually hang out with them IRL. It’s mostly through texts.
I'm autistic and I think my father probably is as well and we both struggle with verbal communication. When I was a kid, any time there was something he wanted to teach me it was always done through the lens of media. Read this book, watch this movie, listen to this album...
theres a new show on the iplayer called Dinosaur about a scottish autistic palaeontologist - autistic actor playing the lead, autistic co-written, and genuinely one of the funniest things I've seen in ages with the whole cast. her sister's bf is such a personification of the woke, wanky nuanceless hippy middle-class man, and it is genuinely fantastic. I'm rewatching it several times a week at the moment! loved the video
I definitely learned about human emotional processing through all the novels I read voraciously. Without those novels, I never would have been able to mask or even learn what was appropriate. It also taught me how much people lie without realizing it, or how often they make decisions based on a small sliver of information, since as a reader you're often omnipotent and can see all the things they don't know
Me too. My family didn't have a TV most of the time I was growing up so I learned so much from reading novels. I still couldn't mask much though because I am a terrible actor. But I learned how other people act and ways they might be thinking.
@@Catlily5 we also didn't have a tv in our house from when I was 5 until I was in high school, so I never was able to watch the shows my friends and classmates did. That was probably one reason why I loved books so much
Media serves a similar function for me. I also rely on youtube videos and online communities for that human connection. I really like your videos because I relate so much.
This! I definitely turned to media as a kid to understand how people work, and I think I had a habit of picking shows with underdog characters (The Worst Witch, anime like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, the X-Men animated series) because I'm kind of an underdog as an autistic person. And I definitely have my comfort shows and movies. Yesterday I was looking for something to watch to kill time, and Benny & Joon was on, so I put it on and was instantly soothed. I think I need to start raiding the discount bins in stores for DVDs so I can build an arsenal of comfort watches!
I haven't watched TV in months. Last show I watched was too disturbing and emotionally draining. I loved watching Doctor Who and other sci fi shows, but since my partner and I broke up I don't feel like watching them because we used to watch them together. Just writing a comment because you said you like reading the comments 🙂
I relate so much, for me my hyperfocus is video games and learnt so much from them and even helped me figure out who I am. I also used tv shows to understand social cues etc too, use to watch the soaps and when you filter out the extreme stories can give you a good insight to neurotypicals 😊 You can also stream on youtube btw, may be better for you that way you not having to try and transfer over a audience, also if you need any help with streaming & discord stuff I can help/give guidance 😊 feel free to reach out if you need any help
yes i relate so much but with books!! books have been my special interest ever since i could remember and they have been so comforting and important to me. my tv shows special interests now too!
You look fine!!! Movies books and tv shows are important for sure, help to build your character/ characters, also get you to think about things you wouldnt usually consider
The way you feel about movies, is the way I feel about music & talk radio; I read fiction if I want to know how people interact with each other. I feel very neutral about a lot of people. I think that 2-tone hair is really cool.
Respectfully, you still look rather nice and presentable to me, and regardless it's always quite nice to hear from you. But best of luck with recovering from your cold! 💚 As an autistic person myself I do relate with you on the importance of media. For me as a trans woman who transitioned a bit later in life, I'm recently very fascinated with Dylan Mulvaney's song "Days of Girlhood". Like many others I honestly thought it was kind of cringe initially, but it's grown on me a lot now and I've come to realize that that cringe was largely just due to internalized transphobia on my part. Now I enjoy the song and think she's quite an inspiration. I'm also thinking of trying to make a video defending her and her song. (There's one line I would slightly change, but I understand where she was coming from.) This is also in large part because I've been recently inspired a lot by other RUclipsrs like yourself and others, as well as NeatOnTheRocks' recent video about how "You should be a RUclipsr (or Artist/Creator)". Also I LOVE Community! ❤
4:16 Holy sh*t. Me too. And it was the type of character who was standoffish, but was cool and very much admired. For me, the character was an elite spy, and she was incredibly intelligent and athletic. But her social awareness was her weakness, and she intentionally self-isolated because she saw friendship as a liability. At this point, I no longer intentionally try to emulate her, but I did it for so long, that I now wonder how much of my personality is based on her and how much of it is me.
I love watching movies and tv shows as well, I like rewatching the same movie over and over. Also enjoy reading the trivia section on Imdb. For me watching either an action or horror movie where a person wins against unsurmountable odds is what I like the most since that is what my life has always felt like, a constant struggle. As far as values go I’d say that books were a bigger influence for me. The classics that I read when I was younger tend to promote left-leaning and anticapitalist values.
completely understand the feeling personally attacked when ppl insult your favourite characters, have far too many times got far too annoyed and got into arguments over fictional characters but they feel like real people and friends to me to it really upsets me
OooOOooOoooooO.....media is life! I was raised in the worlds on my tv. And YAY for meeting Kev!!!!! Im still over the moon at him liking a tweet of mine years back....😂(about turning a group of build a bears into the view askewniverse girl gang, ya know... the coalition for the liberation of itenerant (sp?) Met Kevin Smith? Jealous. He was the guy that made me want to set all my screenplays based in the same universe. Hopefully directing next year 🤞 *Why not write a comedy short about how crap they are at the Job Centre when you're clearly asking for help?*
Yesssss I love the part about how autistic people can still have things in common with allistic people!!! It's so true like there can be other things we relate to each other on. I think a lot of NTs assume we're so far removed from core aspects of the human experience and like no! We're people too! Anyway I learned about a comic that says Bruce Wayne is "possibly autistic" so I've been happy since lol
tv shows and movies are so important to me that i started a channel where i analyse tv shows and movies. there's this show called Everything's Going To Be Okay which i haven't watched, but it stars an autistic girl and the creator josh thomas talked about how he realised he was autistic after doing this show.
my gf and me are watching the entirety of sailor moon rn (1st time for her, XXth time for me) we do a few episodes every night and it's probably the only thing keeping me sane atm
Have you explored any films from director Tom Tykwer? A few titles I like: Run Lola Run (Lola Rennt), The Princess and the Warrier (Der Krieger und die Kaiserin), Three (Drei), Heaven... dunno how they might land for you, so I won't specifically recommend them beyond just being something to maybe check out if you haven't seen them. I know I really like them, though.
We gotta get you a guest shot on the Who, I can see it, though I haven't watched one of those since the 80s, I can see it, super british dr who, My life is a dark indie film, scored by passionate though detached 90s girl rock myself, with an oliver stone plot
I learned to immitate Sitcoms, cheers, nightcourt, mash, and got in a lot of trouble at school, but after a crash and school avoidance at puberty I became like fully introverted, ya know.
I don't use Discord or Twitch. RUclips us my main video viewing, and LBRY comes second. If I could afford to pay Patreon I would but I also have over a hundred other channels I would like to do the same with, so at a pound per channel per month... Would be nice to have another option on Patreon to pay an amount that is shared between channels I follow.
You have time on your hands, do some work experience in whatever takes your fancy. I'm talentless but i did a course, learned a skill. I'm shit at it but i just about earn enough to pay rent and food

So agree. For me reality TV has taught me how to have relationships.
I love reality tv 😂 especially dating shows lol

Hi Dana, guess what? You've become one of my watching-for-comfort media, so thanks!
Movies have always been my biggest refuge in life ❤

Oh and i realized recently that all my morals came from Mr. Rogers. 😁🤔
Are you a fan of the music of the Grateful Dead? 💙⚡️❤️
@@LynIsALilADHD for me it was Mr. Rogers, reruns of The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Little House on the Prairie, and The Waltons.

I know this is totally not the point but I’d not heard the phrase “💩 or get off the pot” and that got me laughing.
Good info though, thank you.
