I’m backing Kinfire all in. I loved your review of Delve and Chronicles seems like a great introduction to dungeon crawl. Council seems like a good game for large parties. With all the stuff you get with all in it couldn’t help it 🙃
Hey Alex - I think you are the best person to answer my question given both your jobs. You often mention in this series a reason to not back a crowd funding project is the shipping cost. I understand the need for shipping on small box items or international shipping, but many online retailers offer free shipping on over $100 purchases (miniature market, CardHaus, Noble Knight, Game Nerdz…). If a crowd funding project is well over the $100 mark now as most are, why are we still paying shipping OR how do retailers make profits by offering free shipping? It seems like many people are backing less because of this shipping discrepancy.
i think it differs per campaign, but ive seen some campaigns offer the retailers 30-50% off compared to a normal backer. They probably also get cheaper shipping rates since getting in bulk
Shipping locally is just shipping while crowdfunding shipping includes freight. Ordering a couple things online and offering free shipping over 100$ is shipping a small amount from a warehouse locally. While on a crowdfunding campaign you need to buy space in an entire container for all of those that bought your product to bring it to your warehouse, then ship it to peoples houses. As for how retailers are making a profit, most consumers will add more stuff to get to the 100$ to avoid paying the shipping, resulting in more profit being made as more product is being sold. As an example if I am buying 80$ worth of shirts, and they have free shipping over 100$. I will then add in another shirt for 20$ to try to avoid paying the shipping, even though the shipping might only be 10$, because at least I am getting something for that 20$. The company then made an additional 10$ in profit, even though they had to pay for the shipping of my order.
Shipping fees also include packing and handling. These tasks tend to be quite involved. From what I've seen, most KS campaigns choose to utilize regional delivery partners who essentially receive pallets of the different rewards boxes from the boat from China and the partner then has to warehouse everything, and assemble the pledges for each backer and hand it off to a parcel company, and handling any replacements, issues with addresses etc. then also fall on that partner. They can't just hand it off to DHL straight from the shipping container and call it a day. That's also why places like Malta or Africa tend to get extremely badly screwed - they don't get their own regional partner, so eg. EU handles them and the backer then ends up paying for the container shipping from China to EU, for the EU company and then for the parcel from EU to their actual address (and all of that includes taxes and customs ofc, though some campaigns separate those out).
Im in for Council and the Delve games from the Kinfire campaign. They are much harder to come by outside the US so its the simplest solution for non US people to get the games
light speed arena is absolutely brilliant. The best real time game I have ever played. Holding value...dunno. But it is a game every serious gamer (that has any toleranace for real time) should have in their collection
Why are people so against the $1 pledge? It's the opposite for me. I sometimes will only back if I have the $1 pledge option. This is because I've been screwed in other campaigns where I lost a lot of money because the campaign never delivered or I lost interest after development taking so long, but it's past the point of getting a 100% refund. With the $1 pledge, I can still be in the loop, get the updates, and upgrade my pledge later if I want to. I see no downside to the $1 pledge. I'm genuinely asking why you and so many others feel so strongly against it. I see it as a way to minimize my risk.
@@nathalievazquez4708 A $1 pre-pledge is they ask via email to back before the campaign is actually out. When they do so they get some sort of deal that other backers don't get, even though many of those backers didn't even know or have access to the pre-pledge option.
Epochs is my type of game, but I would like to see wider reviewing of final game. Maybe if it's successful, would back a second print. ICE is a second print, and one I was interested in, so that's a back.
@@IncredibleDream Thanks I see that now. I went and did it. I'm interested in some of the other stuff but things are tight so I'm going to have to wait until retail I think
Only game I am getting is Children of Morta, because it just looks really good. I have played the vid game, and both seem very different, while both being Rouge Lites. The vid game is very story focused, and very multiplayer heavy. Personally enjoyed the vid game more with my friends then by myself, so I feel like that would work well for a Board game adaptation. Its funny because their advertising the Board game on Steam and comments under it are very hostile calling it board game shovel ware.
@@BoardGameCo Nice. Missed the campaign and Gf's stretch pay (if possible to apply!) is literally *chef's kiss*! A campaign that i am looking for is Guns of the old West, which is launching later today and want to see how it'll go and develop. Personally, i think the creators are overpromising but will check it out for sure!
Every time I see Lauchboom/kit on a project, I know it's been artificially hyped with psychologically manipulated crowd and I stay away as much as I can.
@@BoardGameCo I would love to see you at least call out when projects have done the $1 pre-campaign pledge tactic. You did this with fake limited pledges. I think it would be a service to let people know.
Here to say ICE is the single worst game my group ever played, and yes we played it 100% correctly. We scooped after an hour in and its BGG ratings reflect for a modern crowdfunded game as well. Avoid it at all costs!
Wow! Thank you for choosing Children of Morta as your personal pick of the week, Alex! 🥳
Of course! Game looks great!
I’m playing Kinfire Chronicles right now and loving it. Need a sequel or expansion content for that game!
Nice! Glad you're enjoying it 🙂

Kinfire takes advantage of backers, so hard no
I get that, I'm not a fan of the $1 system either
I'm thinking about Formosa Tea because I don't have a beverage crafting game in my collection yet and this one appeals to me for some reason. 🤔
If your heart calls go for it :)

I'm glad you like it that much...unfortunately for me I enjoyed the non app driven Stellar Conflict more.
Kinfire Council used a $1 pre-pledge. And the “all-in” is not really an all-in. If you don’t like these marketing practices, don’t back this campaign.

@nathalievazquez4708 The $1 pre-pledges some campaigns are doing is different than the normal $1 pledge level.
I didn't know there were two different things. What's the difference?
The all in pledge is for all their games. Not just kinfire council... I don't understand your problem with this?

I need to figure out on kinfire what the lowest I can back and still be eligible for the errata pack
I appreciate the children of morta discussion too. I'm very on the fence and worried because it is a publisher I haven't heard of
You can just get the errata pack with the $1 Pledge Manager Pledge!

I'm on the fence with ICE. I missed the first edition, I might back this one.
Good luck deciding!

Didn't that only just launch yesterday?
I’ve very torn on Ice. Do you think it will come to retail?
Unsure unfortunately :(
I agree with you on "Epoch". It sounds better.

So I am a US backer but currently living in Taiwan. Considering the shipping is free for Formosa Tea, solid back?
Yes, definitely
I see NO need to back any crowd funded game. Why give 'em your $$ to keep for a year, interest-free for a product you're uncertain is good?
Can you forgive me? I just watch the picks of the week...
