Lyrics:
This one was my mum
This one my papa
This one when the kids stayed out too late in their first car
If you were to chase
The lines on my face
This one was from drinking
These two are from smoking
Those were my divorce
When everyone was fighting
There’s no hiding place
For the lines on my face
These are for the laughter
I’ll take to the hereafter
Creases made by friends
I had my ups and downs
There’s triumph and disgrace
In the lines on my face
These are for the smiles
When I look upon your face

Can't get through this without shedding a tear. Genius.
It has exactly the same effect on me.
The stranglers, just pure magic since I was 13 they have shaped my musical life.
I lost my dad on March 3rd. I found this one on the latest album. First time I heard it, I absolutely broke down in tears. I listened to it again and again and again until all I could do was smile. This wasn't the only song that has helped me so far but it is an integral one.
I'm feeling you brother, I lost my "papa" in January.........stay strong mate, the best we can hope for is that they're watching over us, witnessing our achievements & that we're doing them proud.
Most moving song of the Stranglers by far.
I hope the lines on my face are happy lines, from years of loving the stranglers, the enjoyment brought from hearing Grip/London ladies, right up to now.thank you Hugh,Jet,Jean jaques, paul,John Baz,and you Mr Dave Greenfield.thank you all.
Fantastic song writers still after 40 years.
I wasn’t expecting the strangers to write more music love this band and song
Stranglers not strangers.
@@gogoyubari366 Bro I was 10 when I wrote that comment, relax
Simple and beautiful, and in my mid-fifties all too recognisable.
Thank you JJ 💖 Lovely to hear all of this reflective and very personal song at last 😊 And yes, I saw that you got Triumph into it too! 😁🏍
Oh wow! That completely overwhelmed me. Tears falling across the lines upon my face!
As always, surprising, different and excellent. Thank you.
This reminds me of Monday and Tuesday buskers nights in Sunderland with Baz Warne. Great times even though someone tried to smash our friendship. But Baz; I think you sound better than ever!! x
You wanted to make me shed a tear? OK, sweet smell of success. A great song. Thank you!
Just gets better every time I hear it brilliant 🙂
I saw the Stranglers back in the day at the Apollo Manchester. I'm disabled now a days and avoiding Covid due to poor health. So I cant go to the concert. I think otherwise I would be there. It would seem like closure. I remember the seats being ripped up so many times at concerts by the stranglers and clash. i notice now a days there's more standing room. Probably wise.
This tune. Not what I expected but its a genius song. I would not be at all surprised this becomes a big hit for them. Its weird but when they sang something's got to change. I identified with that all young and punky and now I identify with this. Clever writing Baz and JJ - i guess.
Once this album comes out that will be it no more demon of the keyboards. 🙏🏻
Another class track, great lyrics!!!!
Sheer beauty. Had me in bits.
I love this song it's just so good I am going to listen to it again and again and again 😃.
Great to see the stranglers still playing
They are ageing well, which is more than I can claim for myself.
Brilliant 🖤
beautiful animation
I've been a stranglers fan since I was 13 am now 49 and I love the new songs I also love the line up with Baz.
Such a moving song
love this one!
I need to go and learn to play this now
Beautiful ❤️🎹🎸🎺🎤
Fantastic and moving 👍🏼🐀
OK... this is either the wisdom of genius, or the genius of wisdom; either way love and respect. (BTW, seen you live in Bristol and you were beyond superb; loved every second)
Short and Sweet!
Wow I wasn’t expecting that
Loved it.
Can you imagine going back in time and playing this song to a 25 year old JJ, and revealing it was The Stranglers in 2021?
I can almost feel the pain from the bike chain whipping he would undoubtedly give me. LOL
Fabulous song, brilliant lyrics, beautifully sung. Not an aggressive sounding bass in sight.
The lines on The Stranglers (the group)'s face only make them more attractive to me as the years advance. Wonderful.
great tune
Instant classic
Another brilliant track
Great little track, and nice video , wish it was a bit longer
Well worded lyrics
Straight from the heart
I loved it! Congrats!
Wow....
Brilliant. Always the best
God bless the stranglers
PLEASE post all the old Stranglers videos to RUclips!
This is excellent…the first two songs AND videos released off their forthcoming Dark Matters album have set a very high bar for the rest of the album. Insanely great.
Loving that :0)
❤
Alucinante, genial!
@@danielbravotamayo265 hola, no lo es, estoy segura
I just love this song 😍
Liking only because Stranglers uploaded it
Does anyone know Allen Godfrey or Gideon Godard from Guildford surrey, went to school with them, this song just brings back the good memories I had with my Stranglers buddy's?
Understand everyone: The Stranglers have gotten older. It is a beautiful song.
My favourite man ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🐀🗿
Nice tune
I've loved the last two Stranglers songs as much as anything I've heard by them since Aural Sculpture. I devoutly hope a full album of these beautiful songs is in the works. No Dave won't be there physically but he will in spirit. How about you Hugh ? Your solo career hasn't exactly been a barnburner so how about getting back to where you once belonged ? For Dave's sake if nothing else.
That's a bit like saying, "How about re-marrying your ex for your anniversary?". If you listen carefully to what Hugh says, there is no reason why he'd want to get back with JJ - maybe vice-versa too; they're really not very compatible men. Without Jet and Dave, what would be the point? Re-write Rattus?
Time moves in one direction so better make the most of now. Besides, now there are alternate versions of early songs to listen to! :)
@@zg8626 Well Jet's not fully out of the game is he ? I know he's not well but the last two I've heard from them are very low key and lovely. That's a fair point about remarrying your ex, true enough. But they did have such an amazing chemistry between them through all their many evolutions that maybe they could find it again. A remake of Rattus would be an embarrassment but the Stranglers never stayed still so who knows ? I think it's unlikely too but I wouldn't mind hearing a final bow from the three originals.
Actually since the odds of Hugh and JJ reuniting is about as likely as the Jam getting back together I guess I would happily settle for a great JJ solo album. Euroman Cometh remains one of my favorite albums ever (so how about uploading the whole bloody thing already YT ?). I know it would sound very different but the man has a lot of memories to draw on and his songwriting keeps getting better and better.
@@zg8626 Actually now that I think about it JJ did knock Hugh through a wall. I can see how that would be hard to get past.
@@teddydog6229 I would want (or be qualified to) speak for Hugh but I seem to recall reading that he thought JJ (or "John" as he seems to delight in calling him) had some deeply-rooted "anger management" issues. They wrote some great songs together in the past and were part of a brilliant Stranglers line up.
Watched Andy Summers' film on The Police last night and can imagine how a band's internal relationships can become toxic; it's sad but it happens - mostly under the umbrella of "artistic differences".
A JJ solo album would certainly be something I'd listen to, so he can count on an audience of 2 at least. A few bass-centric instrumentals wouldn't go amiss either! Did you buy "Fire & Water"? (Off to dig out "Rain & Dole & Tea"...)
Incroyable ! Magnifique !
Jamais sur aucune radio !
💜🤘🏿
Bloody marvelous. 😎🐀
🎯"couldn't of put it better "class"from our heroes of old👍😎
R.I.P. Hugh & Dave..Thanks For All You Gave Us..Gone But Definitely Not Forgotten 🙏 ❤
Sublime.
Reminds me off a Weller acoustic 😊love this
Stranglers are great, Weller's a prick - never any comparison, Weller would have made it political
@@brianlawrence8401 Most of stranglers songs are political.
LOVE this. JJ can write some beautiful soft songs. That one from the japanese anime 'we were lovers' is one of my all time faves from him. He's brave to stick this on the new Stranglers album, but bravo to him - if he could do it with La Folie and Don't Bring Harry how is this so much different? This got me more interested in the new album
JJs lyrics, sung by Baz Warne. Listen to the Sunderland accent. 👍
@@richardjamieson6681 wow, i didn't pick up on that straight away
My friends...
😎
Short and minimalist track, but very good.
Remember Pink Floyd with Roger waters, "Pigs on the wing" or "Nobody at Home".
Hardly Death & Night & Blood is it?
Friends or frowns?
It skirts an advertising jingle. Just.
other way round maybe? most ad jingles use popular songs.
Reminds me of Roger Waters/Floyd...
Dave and Hugh are no longer a part, they've lost their lustre in my ears
I believe this is Dave on Keyboards. He completed his part before his death.
@@Ian25tech Well now Dave is no longer with us they should know when to call it a day and bow out gracefully
@@geemonster9179 I've known Baz for 30 plus years, and I know that there are ideas to keep a brand going. And with the Stranglers constantly changing styles, I know that they will come up with more great material.
But looking back, I acknowledge that it is all so very different now, so yes, when are "The Stranglers" not the Stranglers??
And I cannot really believe that they are still going sometimes. On the days of gigs, it makes me smile when I can say "I'm going to see the Stranglers tonight". I've been seeing them since I was 13 years old, and now I am 58. I think Stranglers fans have been very lucky to have had such longevity of their favourite band.
But saying all that; I think Jat Black has the final say on whether they continue or not.
@@Ian25tech It always amazes me how many fans think they have the right to say when the band should quit. They’re The Stranglers and they alone will make that determination. Baz has really grown into the role as main frontman so I really struggle with those who say ‘it doesn’t sound like The Stranglers’ anymore….. what do they sound like? Considering ‘Golden Brown’ sounded (not) just like ‘5 Minutes’ - and those two singles were the same line up only three years apart ‘78-81. 😂😂😂😂
Sounds like a Lou Reed reject.
C'est le morceau le moins bon de l'album de mon point de vue.
Un peu quelconque, trop simpliste par rapport à l'album qui est super
Le morceau Breathe est génial
Nearly as bad as Steve ignorent holy fuk 😏
.....until you lose both parents, then it has a deep meaning.
not for this band
I’m sorry, I’m a lifelong Stranglers fan but some of the lyrics are very weak I think.
And Golden brown has similar lyrics
@@mikemusic8213 You surely can’t compare the two?
@@donalfinn4205 Both melodic songs
Hmm liked the last song as a great tribute to Dave but I’m sorry this just doesn’t do it for me. Desperately hoping the rest of the album sounds more like The Stranglers. Very disappointed 😔
Do you think 'Feline' sounds anything like 'Rattus Norvegicus', or 'The Gospel According To The Meninblack' for that matter? I don't. Truth is, they're so diverse and more so over the years they've been together, it's often hard for people to recognize the same band.
Cute song, but not very "Stranglers"...
Define “Stranglers”. Ugly?, Golden Brown?, Tank?, Skin Deep?, Relentless?, The Lines?……massive diversity is what you get throughout their career. The Stranglers are almost unique in their reluctance to do the same thing twice.
i cried listening to this, but ive lost both my parents so......
is music this? i think this new album will be orrible!
la merda in italien
Nah its the filler to make up 11 trax after Dave passed
Sounds like Dave's on it to me........
@@richardjamieson6681 he is pal... recorded before he passed away..👍
What's this crap? Bad Leonard Cohen.
