@@RailwayManiaNet I actually think I had a brief conversation with Chris by direct messaging were I mentioned Big Boy pacers being an annoyance before he came over here. But the true sense of frustration of how bad it is can only be understood by hands on experience!

    great podcast
Reading 2101 being mentioned in this video hauled Chessie System excursions for a short while but in March 7, 1979, a roundhouse at Stevens Yard in Russell, Kentucky caught fire with the 2101 inside, causing the locomotive to be damaged. The status of mechanical soundness was unknown due to the fire and it was traded to the B&O Railroad Museum and it was cosmetically restored back to its American Freedom Train livery. The Chessie System wasn't legally responsible but chairman Hayes Watkins helped and so Ross Rowland, head of the High Iron Company, picked C&O 614 to replace the Reading 2101 to head the Chessie Safety Express based upon Chessie's Operation Lifesaver program for grade cross accidents. Apparently the 1980 and 1981 seasons for the Operation Lifesaver program didn't go as planned as the public focused mostly on C&O 614 rather than the program's message. Since 1982, the Operation Lifesaver program had been run by diesels.
More info bout this is in the Mark I video C&O 614 Chesse Safety Express & Winter Coal Trains. Latter of which covers the ACE 3000 story and C&O 614's coal haulage of January 1985.

That Railway envy is VERY REAL!!!! I live near Strasburg, and I wibbled ti my friend that it’s only 4.5 miles long and he just blinked and went “what??” (He’s from Ireland, hi Crane if you’re here). And I wish it was as long as the Bluebell which is 11 miles! So yah, the Railway envy is there lol

The best way I like to think of US vs UK steam railways, is the number of places we have I'd say is roughly the same. But it's so much more spread out in the US it's harder to reach these spots. If every railroad in the US was put into one state like Pennsylvania or Missouri itd feel similar to the UK

Darn, wish you could have covered Ventura county number 2. She’s having an overhaul right now and won’t be back in service for a few years.
