The Kabuliwalas of Kolkata | Unique Stories from India

  • The Kabuliwalas from Tagore's story still live in Kolkata. A hundred years after Tagore's Kabuliwala walked these streets with his bag of cashews and raisins the community of Pathans have made a life for themselves in the city's bylanes. Named after the city of their origin, Kabul, the Kabuliwalas have integrated seamlessly with the city that they now call their adopted homeland. They get along famously with the Bengalis, the Marwadis, the Catholics and more that make up the melting pot that is Kolkata's culture.
Today, over a hundred Khan families live in what are called 'Khan kothis'. The Pashtun people traditionally run family businesses selling almonds, pistachios, walnuts, fabrics, etc., a heritage passed down for generations. Many of the members of the earlier generation, however, did not care to pursue an education. This is changing, with the latest generation going to good schools in the city.
Do these people ever feel like returning to Pashtunistan? Not really, says Yasmin Nigar Khan, President of the All India Pakhtoon Jirga-e-Hind, and adopted great-granddaughter of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan. The Pathans who came to Kolkata found happiness here. India is their home now, and they love their adopted homeland.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

This is the India I grew up in and feel proud of, and this is what India has always been and always will be....respect for each other, for other religions, tolerance and love. This is what makes us stronger and prosperous. Starting from Iran, Afghanistan to Africa, we have people from every corner of this earth. Around 2001 I was getting my motorcycle repaired at a mechanic in Dehradun, one gora guy on a motorcycle stopped by and spoke in pure hindi "idhar ka mistri kaun hai", I was left speechless and later found out they are the generations of the British's who never left India but settled around Mussoorie. Tom Alter was also from Mussoorie. We also have lots of Tibetan refugees and even Russians who came here when USSR split up. Let us not let hate and politics divide us guys, we all are Indians now irrespective of our religion.

can I just say i was moved by this video! the way that man bows down at the end, really struck a chord in me. all of us Muslims have to show and prove our patriotism as Indians but y can't they see we bow down on this very land five times a day. this is our land, the land that will be testament to all our deeds n the land that will speak our tale long after we are gone. i love India.

Amalgamaite by blood we are Hebrews, by Religion we are Muslims.
We are the people of Moses (Musah A.S)...... amongst the 12 tribes, 10 of the tribes were Muslims.... the other 2 tribes were rebellious who worshipped other than Allah.
As a Pashtun, we do not recognise Israel 🇮🇱, nor do we recognise those false Ashkenazi Jews, claiming falsely to belong to the 12 tribes.
Last but not least..... Pashtuns do not have problem with the world..... it's the world who has a problem with us.

pashtunistan means land where pashtuns(pathans) are living in 1940 when Muslim league of India decided to have separate country for Muslims. bacha khan opposed the creation of Pakistan and he wanted India's to be united but when he failed the he has his own movement called khudaye kihdmadgar and he wanted to create a separate country for all pashtun living in Afghanistan and northern India parts now called kph and fata and some parts of baluchistan. he wanted to create this without any bloodshed but he couldn't achieve this. and most of bacha khan close friends and some supporters went to India and to Afghanistan and bacha khan relatives stayed in Pakistan and now they have political parties called anp which stand for Awami national party and they still believe in pashtunistan in 1970 pashtunistan movement was once again in eyes of pashtun but Back than it was Bacha khan son khan Abdul wali khan and it failed again. Bacha khan never accepted the pakhtun livings in separation
