    great video, it would be great to see the same experiment after the metro tunnel is built since that would throw another option into the mix, and mould most likely be the fastest since the train is much faster than the tram, but since no services would terminate at town hall, you would have to wait a few mins on the train like in this video.

    • @CBM_Walks
      @CBM_Walks Год назад +1

      @revilok08. Actual travel time from a Town Hall Station platform to State Library Platform is of course much quicker.
      (There's a real-time video on youtube, of it from the drivers cab, during a test-run).
      However, as it will be about 400-500 metre walk via the pedestrian subways, from the new Stations, to old stations, overall time (the way he did the comparisons may only be a little faster - re total time.
      Would have to find a start point, & end point that doesn't favour any station.

    I reckon you got unlucky with the tram, most times there is one waiting there. It would be interesting to do this but starting on a train that has pulled in - whether it is faster to stay on it around the city loop or walk/tram.

    Seems to match my experiences when I needed to transport between Melbourne Central and University of Melbourne. Tram *should* be fastest, but whenever I tried I just missed one group of trams and had to wait 5+ minutes for the next tram. And the tram would be so packed it wasn't always possible to board. And the tram would always be delayed for "unexpected" reasons (e.g. cars queuing across intersections). I had to allow for the worst case time to meet my train connection. I quickly concluded that walking was far better and more consistent, despite the traffic lights conspiring to get me at every possible intersection for a full cycle.

    • @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly
      @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly Год назад

      The new tunnel will be the slowest. There will only be one line using it, Dandy to Sunbury. Even in peak hours there will be waiting time of several minutes, plus a climb up and down stairs to get to the platforms. Outside of peaks you could wait ages. Can't compete with frequent surface level trams.

    • @RealNotOrrio
      @RealNotOrrio 9 месяцев назад

      @@AshleyReynolds-vc6ly the dande line is the busiest in melbourne, there will be a 10 minute off peak frequency at worst with the potential of 5 minute frequencies during offpeak not to mention the almost 3 minute frequencies during peak, the train can go up to 80kph (not possible on cbd streets)

    • @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly
      @AshleyReynolds-vc6ly 9 месяцев назад

      @@RealNotOrrio Even a 3 minute train peak frequency cannot compare to the tram frequencies. The distance is too short for the train to be of any advantage. Sure, if it was a longer trip the extra speed of the train would negate the waiting time. But if a train could do Melb Central to Flinders in 1 minute the extra distance to climb up and down to the platforms means the overall trip won't be any faster than a tram, even if there was no waiting time for the train.

      @prodofine , definitely train fastest for Southern Cross Station to Parliament Station.
      It takes 7 minutes train travel time from SCS to Parliament Station. & if use Mernda /Hurstrbridge lines (as closest platforms to Station exits, depending on which exit), would be best/fastest way, to get to whatever point outside the Station.
      Melbourne City used to be called The Golden Mile, as is very close to 1 mile long (slightly more) east-west/Spring St to Spencer St. So 1.8k.
      Average walking pace for a majority or people is 13-15 mins per km. So, be about 25 mins for a moderately fast walker.
      Tho of course are many that can walk faster. Official walking pace for PT apps/journey planners is at rate of 4km/hour. But many can walk faster, but that PT time also considers other factors, not just steps taken.
      Tram will take a bit longer than train, as there's 5 tram stops between Spencer St & Spring St - plus those two (9 mins daytime off-peak according to PTV).
      Boarding at tram stops near SCS can be bit slow too, due to large amount of people going from trains to trams.

    It's funny as a young bloke decades ago I lived around the corner in Richmond , I didn't mind going into the city back in those days , in my old age I cant stand the place . my last time in the city I went by car to one of the big camera places to look at an expensive camera , finding a park close to the shop was an absolute pain , I left without looking at the camera .
    some might say , why didn't you take public transport , firstly I didn't want to carry an expensive camera and accessories on PT, secondly im old and don't walk too well these days .
    The taxi may have been the best option , but getting a taxi on a Friday in and then getting one out of the city again on a Friday , it's just hooorible.

    Yup, that all agrees will my un-scientific feelings to how this would end up. Hop a tram if it is there or you can see one coming, otherwise walk to destinations within 10-15 min walk. Trains are for longer distances. To note though this varies greatly depending on how mobile you are. If you are in a wheelchair or mobility scooter then the train would probably be quicker and a tram may be the best for an older person in general.

    Interesting comparisons, but should show actual travel time on PT, as well as time from/to start & end points. People walk at different places, & are lots of variables available re getting in or out of Flinders St Station, & also re Melbourne Central Shopping Centre.
    Of course many PT time travel challenges (particularly London travel youtubers) do theirs from a start point, or just outside the touch-on barriers, so am not saying shouldn't, just perhaps not most accurate way of doing.
    As for walking, & being close to same time at PT, you even walked along the busiest side (west side) of the 2 busiest north-south streets. East side of Swanston St has half the amount of pedestrians, so even quicker, just have to cross & cross back across Swanston St, which is supposed to be 'Swanston Walk' & supposed to be able to cross anywhere. (though 2 people told me they got stopped for jaywalking; & I because of bikes & trams best to cross at lights).
    Way that was walked into or out of Melbourne Central SC is slowest way. Though never timed it, I do think quicker to walk along Latrobe St & in Latrobe St entrance, & are very close to the Clock.
    (Btw, the "clock" design at Melbourne Central is actually that of a - giant - Fob-Watch).
    Also, Elizabeth St is quicker to walk along, than west side of Swanston St. Except perhaps between Collins St & Flinders St, currently, due to 2 supermarkets & many food and retail.
    There's another way to get from that Melbourne Central atrium to Flinders St Station, but may not be quicker currently due to temporary closure of Degraves St tunnel/subway while better access is done & lifts installed, in conjunction with the new Metro tunnel south-north Line

    I always walk this. A lot of my friends never believed me when I said walking was just as fast and often even faster than the tram. Plus I just hate the tram experience in Melbourne and avoid it whenever possible. Don't get me wrong, the trams are fine 99% of the time, and it also depends where you're catching the tram, but I've been unlucky so many times and had junkies and eshays on trams that have caused such unpleasant scenes, blasting bluetooth speakers, fighting each other and screaming, occasionally people smoking on the tram which I have seen a handful of times. One time many years ago I even saw a dude who was sitting on the floor in the middle of the tram and openly smoking a crack pipe. Even when things go smoothly, I just hate how crowded it can be. This is not the normal experience for trams in Melbourne, again don't get me wrong, I really don't want to deter people from using the trams. I'm sure the majority of people who take trams every day and have done for years have never had any unpleasant experiences on them, I just seem to be unlucky with trams lol. The tram from Flinders to Melbourne Central is probably one of the safest in the city too, all the inner city trams are pretty uneventful. Wacky things tend to be more likely once you leave the CBD and end up in certain suburbs, but still rare and things are very safe lol.
    Plus I have legs that function and I like to walk, so I just walk whenever reasonably possible no matter where I'm going.

    dishonest. seems like you wanted a particular result and tailored the experiment to get it. for example you can see the fed square crosswalk from underneath the clocks so you purposely started the tram run at a time that would get you stuck at those lights and make you lose a minute. also why not take an extra 10 minutes out of your day to get back to fed square for the walking run and do the experiment right? oh because walking uphill takes longer and that would've messed up your desired result. i work near melbourne central and i've had to run to get to flinders street to catch the train on sunday mornings. there's no way you 'walked' that distance in 10 minutes and we can see what your definition of walking is when you pass a regular pedestrian at double their speed. my only question is, why? you don't seem like you're against trams (apart from the "trams can get crowded" comment) so why try to claim that they're slower than walking? they obviously aren't.
