- The Los Angeles River is often thought of as a huge concrete eyesore. Not anymore, at least not after you join Huell for this special 1 hour adventure where Huell literally travels down the miles of river bed stopping along the way to talk to some of the many people working hard to bring our river back to its natural state. He'll see the animals that call the river home, he'll learn about the many 'pocket parks' which connect the community back to the river allowing local families to relax and enjoy the view, and he'll get the scoop on what local government is doing on, in, under, and around the river to make clean and green.

Love you Huell Howser, this type of interaction can never be forgotten! Huell has the ability to make the people he speaks to absolutely thrilled to discuss their doings, and genuinely just open up. What a legend!

DanOCan up in Canada has a lot in common with Huell in his approach and also his subject matter. He roams the open spaces seeking topics not usually take on by the big boys.

freind took me fly fishing on the river this spring.. caught bass. carp, bluegill on the 2 days i was in LA.. river was cleen, very few homelss folks.. had lots of fun fly fishing there.. 5 weight cor carp and bass, 3 weight for the bluegill and smaller bass

I never say this, but God bless ole' Huell. He is sorely missed. The woman in the blue blouse looks just like a gal I dated at UCLA, only a bit older. I really think the bike path should be named 'The Cal Worthington-Okie Memorial Bike and Railroad Path'. I wonder if the people Huell interviews here were set-ups who were put in place. Maybe, but they did a good job. This is probably one of my Top 5 Huell fav episodes.

Always love my self some Huell Howser IM born and raised LA native it is beautiful and diverse I miss it every day. I moved to Arizona for a more affordable quality of life I still come to California every couple months. Im here binge watching Huell Howser missing my childhood days I am 31 now
It's important to remember that the LA River overflowed it's banks in 1938, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people, and destroying thousands of homes. The Army Corp of Engineers took care of that, paving it over to prevent future floods.
And preventing any natural future of an already water starved area.

I used to live in Atwater Village for years and used to walk several blocks to go down to the river and watch the birds and visit the horses at the LAPD stables. I miss it. And I miss Huell too!
I lived near the San Gabriel River on the south side of LA county. I remember what it looked like before it became a 'cement' river. We used to call the part near us the "Bamboo Jungle" as it obviously had a lot of bamboo growing there. They had cement sides to the bare sandy bottom, there really were no good reasons to cover the base with cement, but they did it anyway.
edit; Sadly politics run the show, but replacing all the destroyed wetlands would drastically reverse any Warming.
@Citizen De Watts Only out of Artesian springs creeks that had madtom catfish and little bream, but we didn't fish, more interested in catching tadpoles. There were some larger springs that fed small ponds where there were fish. Had to get permission to go 5 miles over there in La Mirada. If we had permission to go to La Mirada we'd go down to Seal Beach instead. We would fish the breakwater, caught a lot of surf perch.
edit; Circa 1958-62. Now it's a city with no neat places for kids to play and even more sadly, no one would let their 8 to 12 year old kids ride their bikes 5 miles to the beach for fear of kidnap.

I read in the ventura county star newspaper when I was staying in moorepark at my girlfrends place. They had found a murdered person who was cut into 9 pieces and floating down the river towards the ocean!☠

Him,his name was Terry Ciecil
And showed his picture, I realised
I met him years ago thru a friend of mine,during my high school years,we all liked dirt bikes@,🥳
apparently he had been living IN hobo's jungle for some time,but let's not forget he was from L.A.county and some of the low life MORONIC hobo's who live along the bamboo riverside's

Even though I've never been to Los Angeles, the L.A. River has always fascinated me. When someone first showed me a photo of the river I asked: "That concrete channel with a trickle of water down the middle is a river?"
More people should learn the history of this waterway because without the river, there would be no Los Angeles
There would be no Los Angeles without (deceptively but legally acquired) Owens Valley water from 150 miles to the north.

I'm 74, for years the only thing the LA river / wash basin was only seen for channeling
flash flood rain run off / storms: Lots of news videos of people needing to be
rescued out of the super fast storm waters rushing through:
Years ago, some people / persons were rafting in places, demonstrating it was usable.
W moved out of CA a few years ago for a slower pace: Huell was a main TV stapple for many of the CA people who enjoyed his work: California Gold. No one ever pick up on his work to carry it on......
These are greatly undervalued here on RUclips, Huell was a treasure !
My deep gratitude to the activist and conservationist that are restoring the L.A. River to a more natural and ecologically healthy river.
I live now by the Klamath River near where it confluences with the Salmon River but when I was twelve years I lived in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles City. This Huell Howser documentary brought back the fond memories of bicycling across the city to the unpaved bottom of the L.A. River near the Los Feliz overpass to collect frogs and snakes to bicycle miles back to my house to keeps as terrarium pets.
Now the unimaginably fantasy of fishing for Steelhead in the L.A. River, in the middle of the city, may be realized in the near future thanks to your visionary work. You also will give may more children the opportunity to connect to their wild nature in the middle of a city.
May everybody work together on keeping the water ways clean, teach and enforce.

I love that LA river bike path, I've used it when I've biked from Santa Monica to downtown LA to downtown Long Beach to Palos Verdes and back to Santa Monica, about an 80 mile round trip.
Was it peaceful to travel or too many homeless encampments ?
@@huerosantos7563 Completely peaceful. no homeless encampments on the path from Vernon to Long Beach, although it does go through some 'sketchy' parts of town like East Compton etc, the only homeless camps on the river that I've seen are on the section up by Griffith Park, but never had an issue. I've even biked many times through Skid Row and never had an issue there, felt very safe believe it or not!
Now all his projects are overrun with snicker bars floating down river
I miss Huell, he shared the landmarks of Los Angeles where I grew up and other interesting places I've never been to.

Man i used to get so annoyed by Huell Howser because he would cut off and interrupt people while they speak but understand now cuz he’s trying to show as he could because sometime you can hear him say he can make a 2-3 hour but obviously they have a schedule to follow.
Probably catch a lot of Browns in that river.
Healthy rivers are the true barometer of a nation’s wealth never to be taken for granted and abused but treasured for the life they represent. Millions of years in the evolution to perfection.

The river represents life. Yes it is in fact a living entity. Manage and treasure it, appreciate what it once was, and could be again. Teach the younger generations there is hope.

Maps would have been useful. So it seems that the green areas are far upstream. From Arroyo Seco down to the sea it seems to be a concrete channel. It is also notable that Compton which is between two rivers, Compton Creek and the LA River is doesn't seem to be included in the greening. Then at the estuary greening seems to begin again.

Huell had money. People in Cali have to live on the streets. Sorry, but I doubt people who have money think it's up to them to fix a society that treats one group like kings, but treats another group of deserving people like peasants. Huell knew he would never be treated the wrong way.
Actually, If you empty a person's bank account, and tear down his workplace, and his home, then he will be homeless, and then his way of thinking will make 180 degree turn, and then he'll say how terrible it is when people become homeless. So many people who don't lose everything just blame homelessness on the homeless.

@@gracie99999 I'm trying to win the lottery. Prosecutors get paid to win against defendants instead of getting paid for their time. When people kill the homeless, then it makes prosecutors happy because they get money for convicting the murderer. If I win the lottery, then I can build shelters for the homeless where they can be safe from people who like to kill the homeless, but the cops are going to try to throw the homeless back on the streets because society "needs" to make money off murder. If crime stops, then cops, judges, and attorneys will lose their jobs.
