  • Davy Jones is the kind of villain that you'd expect to be pretty memorable. He's acted exceptionally well, written well, and given great dialogue. So why don't people talk about him?

Glad I’m not the only that absolutely loves Davy Jones. He fits the aesthetic of the Pirates movies so good

Despite his Cthulhu-esque appearance and attempts at pure evil, Davy Jones still had more humanity than Cutler Beckett.

@HeadCannon, I don’t think there should be another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel and I also think that after bringing back Barbossa and Jack and Jones, the audience has no reason to take anyone’s death seriously such that the stakes have been all but destroyed (not necessarily completely destroyed since in At World’s End there was an idea of “it will come at a cost” to do that but even so it would be pretty difficult to do that well.).
Also, I think the reason Davy Jones is so underrated is because people associate him with the weaknesses of the specific movies that he was in, instead of judging him strictly as a villain

Davy Jones is a great villain and honestly one of the best morally grey and sympathetic, yet not quite redeemable villains. I think Pirates of The Carribean would have been much better as a series if they focused slightly more on the villains of the series rather than spending so much screen time on side characters and antics. Don’t get me wrong, the movies should be funny and should have antics, but you could reasonably cut out big chunks of Dead Man’s Chest or At World’s End and replace them with scenes showing Beckett maneuvering his pieces to better set him up as the final villain. They also easily could have had Jack Sparrow kill the Kraken at the end of the 2nd movie rather than waste that scene off screen. Jack creating a massive gunpowder bomb and using himself as bait to get the kraken to swallow it before blowing up would have been an amazing scene, and fitting for the character, adding one last impossible achievement to his legend. Still, his death leaping into the Kraken’s Maw, sword drawn, was spectacular. There was just a lot of interesting things that could have and should have been shown to make things flow better.

The best thing about Pirates of the Caribbean is Jack Sparrow and great villains (blackbeard not so amazing). But with Johnny Depp done with Disney, I don't see them making a PotC movie that will be any good. I'm sure Disney will try and revive it like they have everything else, and ruin it. There's a reason Davy Jones and Barbossa were in multiple films, they're the best villains in their own way and their chemistry with Jack is unparalleled! I just hope they leave the franchise to the glorious past and don't butcher it like they did Indiana Jones Dial of Dysentery.

6:09, I disagree with that. I think that its weaknesses almost all come from the fact that it had to be the sequel to Dead Man’s Chest and Dead Man’s Chest set a lot of things up without pay-off (or even much of a plan) and thus forced the third movie to handle it instead. So I would say the second movie is the weakest one.

Listen buddy, I was there. I was a high schooler when the Pirates sequels came out. The nostalgia argument doesn't work on me. I know you can't rehabilitate this junk.

Personally I would say Davy Jones was just forgettable as a villain. He was in 2 films and his story was messy and ultimately went no where. Pirates 3 put me off watching more Pirates films and ever wanting to revisit them
