    Theorists, have you ever heard of Captain Jack Sparrow? I'm pretty sure most of you have. What if I told you he was in trouble? Like DEADLY trouble? No, I don't mean from undead pirates or Davy Jones himself. I'm talking about good old dehydration. That's right, this rum drinking pirate is DYING of thirst and it's all his fault!

    A neat detail to denote: Jack can only be seen wobbling around as he walks on land. At sea he always walks normally, almost like its inverted.

      I think it's because he's so used to walking on moving boats that his legs automatically walk on land as if he's on a boat if that makes sense

    • @DJBaphomet
      @DJBaphomet Год назад +125

      That's exactly it, really
      Since he's been on boats most of his life, he's gotten used to walking on a ship, his body and legs moving to the tides of the sea, but of course the land doesn't move like a swaying ship, so he's very wobbly on land compared to on a ship.

    • @ReignForever
      @ReignForever Год назад +24

      This is the stand-alone theory for why he walks like that. Could argue that it would just be less noticeable on boats if it WAS caused by dehydration

    “Why fight when we can negotiate?”

    I will always love that line.
    Fun fact: that scene was improvised by Johnny Depp because he forgot his lines and it was so good that they decided to keep it in the movie. Even the other actors were confused. You can see the confusion on their faces in the scene.

    • @ravenwing199

      Historically Pirates never match Naval ships in guns or crew but they used Speed deception intimidation and sometimes bluffing to terrorize Indiamen and Trade ships while evading something like a Navy Frigate. Generally pirate ships were fast small 1-2 Masted Merchantmen with Guns slapped everywhere they could fit. Even the Famous Queen Annes Revenge was a massive Pirate vessel as a 3 mast 36-40 gun ship. Which would put it in the 6th Tier of Naval Firepower. HMS Prince had 92 guns a small 1st rate in the early 1700s era.

    Not to say that he wouldn't start getting hallucinations regardless of what happened, I think one of the main reasons that he started having them in Pirates 3 was because he was in Davy Jones' Locker, which is supposed to mess with a person's mind. The fact that the hallucinations continue even after he's out of the Locker is probably a result of the dehydration making the Locker's effects worse than they would normally be.

    I feel like this is the only theory I can think of that would make the portrayal of Jack even remotely acceptable to me in the fifth film. I really hated what they did with him in Dead Men Tell No Tales. My favorite thing about him is how people underestimate him because of his wackiness, but he's actually incredibly smart and knows exactly how to manipulate situations to get what he wants. He's always plotting and scheming --- especially in the first three films, and a bit in the fourth one. Sadly, in the fifth movie it seems like he's just stumbling through situations and has no idea what he's doing 90% of the time.

Idk if it's the actor, writer, director or the team as a whole that necessarily makes him so great, but lines like that "No you don't" or any of the lines during Liars Dice. From the Calm "I accept your challenge" to the humored "You're free to leave, THE VERY NEXT TIME WE MAKE PORT" That character is just so well done.

    I’ve seen these movies more times than I can count, and while I agree that he probably is dehydrated, I think it’s a real combination of genius, madness, and illness. They say there’s a fine line between genius and insanity and I think his dehydration makes his jump rope with that line.
    Though some of Matt’s points aren’t in good context. Two I immediately noticed are when jack stabs his double to intimidate the others and the scene where Will says Jack thinks they’re a hallucination, and when he can’t hop a fence. The first was while jack was dead, it’s the 3rd movie when Barbossa captains a crew to retrieve jack from what is probably a purgatory. This movie is filled with supernatural elements and at this point they are “beyond the edges of the map” so it only makes sense he’s stuck in a purgatory filled with copies of himself, a ship with no sea in sight, and yes even a goat.
    The second, when he falls flat on a fence, was in the 5th movie. This is after we see him getting turned away at a bar because the bartender says he’s had enough. So he’s not just drunk, he’s wasted. He also seems to be more capable walking on a ship than on land, which checks out with sailors even today.
    To wrap this up, I’m not dismissing this theory entirely, I think it holds a lot of good points, I’m just a nerd who really likes these movies and the characters.

    • @kathleenmoody5120
      @kathleenmoody5120 Год назад +9

      Also, something no one seems to be mentioning is that at the start of the first movie when he arrives at port, the ship barely makes it before sinking almost completely. That's why he landed in that port, necessity. He very literally had barely any ship above the water to stand on. There's no way that ship could have taken him to any other dock at that port let alone a completely different port. Once he got to port I do believe that everything he did came down to luck (some good, some bad) & his experiences & skills at being a pirate.
      Personally I think that in the first couple of movies he is both rather lucky & smart with only a few signs of dehydration & heat stroke but as the movies go on he looses most of his intelligence & the symptoms get worse & worse over time.

He always let's on that he's slow and making mishaps when he's actually two to three steps ahead while others are a step behind. Sure there's a mishap on his tactics once in a while but he would come up with an impromptu counter (when he can, not always) and gain back the leverage. How do I know this? 🤔 I'm relatable to him and let others think I'm weird or crazy 🤪 so that they underestimate me. Joker is also somewhat similar, only he has antisocial personality disorder.

    I think Jack said what he said because he likes being thought of as a genius and the greatest Pirate Captain in the world, but deep inside he knows that for the most part he was really just making things up as he go along. :)

    Most historians focus on starvation during these times, so they frequently forget about dehydration, which was as big as a killer as starving. One other factor, is that fresh food on wooden vessels during the age of sail, could and did get contaminated by seawater, anyone devouring this food will get dehydration, so fresh water remains the lifeline of any ship at sea, historic and current.

    • @Vasari12
      @Vasari12 2 года назад +2

      As a sailor I can really confirm this. Sailed in the Caribbean on a steel vessel. AC was out, provisions were running low, including the water. Luckily, ships these days have a desalination plant, but drinking the tap water aboard is a last resort because it's not really "fresh" so to speak. So in order to make it drinkable, we'd boil it and in some cases add chocolate milk powder or lemonade syrup. Sailors these days have it hard, but it's not as nightmarish an affair as during the Golden Age of Sail.

    This theory kind of fits with another theory that the entire 5 movie franchise is just Jack's hallucination after his first time being stranded on the island. All the stories we are watching are just live hallucinations for Jack. That's why he's getting more slurred as the movies go on. Jack is getting closer to his inevitable death of dehydration on the island so the motor skills of his hallucinated self stagger also. It explains why he's so lucky because Jack is creating the story he's always going to come out on top in the end. It would explain why his character in all the hallucinations doesn't sweat because he isn't currently capable of doing it so he doesn't imagine himself sweating in his hallucination.

    • @dafilmqueen556

    Okay but I pose to you this- alcohol withdrawal. Minus the sweating, it does cause people to act and sound drunk when they are actually sobering up. I've worked in the Emergency Department before and I can tell you that the "Jack Sparrow" sorts do come around, and are most prevalent when they claim they had a life long drinking habit that they either couldn't substain or tried to quit, which lands them in the ED because of how sick it can make you. But it also explains why Jack is how he is even when sober. I've also seen dehydration before. Dehydrated people lack energy. They'd pass out to sleep before they needed to sweat if they were doing hard laborous tasks like Jack does.
    I would except a mix if drunkenness/withdrawal and dehydration though.

      To be fair both would no doubt lead to some degree of permanent neurological damage also. Water is essential and ethanol is a poison, chronic deficiency of the former and excess of the latter doesn't bode well for the health of the nervous system. Bear in mind of course that the chronic dehydration would also no doubt impair the bodies ability to metabolise and eliminate the toxin also. Certainly the elimination as the Ethyl Acetate from metabolism itself a CNS depressant is excreted in urine which is a problem as chronic dehydration doesn't make for the best kidney function.

  • @YdaxraTala
    @YdaxraTala 2 года назад +333

    He may be going crazy from dehydration and rum, I love him as he is. Also, another thing is I always considered Jack to be hiding more secrets (whether he knows of them or not). He has such incredible luck and endurance - it's beyond human. It's why I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Jack was still lingering across the seas somewhere, seeking entertainment and treasure years after he would logically last. And even if he dies, I think he'd just manage to stumble back again to the land of the living. So with all this, the legend of Jack Sparrow would be like an urban legend, that people don't know to be true.

      - "You are mad"
      Jack: - "If I wasn't, this would probably never work".
      There is a saying where I'm from: "the Luck of the children and drunks" and something called "The luck of the crazy/mad" .
      I believe Captain Jack Sparrow is tapping into that luck, but sometimes he does it by acting more crazy than he is at the moment.
      Jack Sparrow knows the supernatural stuff at the sea is real, and sailors have always had superstitions regarding luck. He is basically creating a "good luck spell" constantly, with his behavior.

    It is my competly serious headcannon that some characters, notably Jack and Barbosa subconsiously understand that having very extreme personality traits put them on par with the supernatural forces of the world they inhabit.

It's amazing how Captain Jack even keeps up with remembering that there's a pirate code (actually just loose guidelines) to follow whilst on his adventures. This diagnosis also gives credence to why it's so easy for Jack to believe in the legends he hears about and seeks them out only to become involved with said legends to the point of them having disdain for him. Makes for wonderful and adventurous times though. .... Drink up me hearties Yo ho!
