    I expected you guys to talk about that scene where Ranveer is asked by Rahul Bose about his educational qualification and he proudly responds that he is in his final year. Rahul switches to English to talk to his daughter and asks whether she wants to be on same level as him. Ranveer's proud smile turns upside down. I have not seen such a strong moment in Hindi movies for a long time.
    Also, Alia telling Ranveer that she has to be daring as she aspires to achieve a lot and has to face a lot of opposition doing the same. You almost talked about these scenes, and didn't.

      There are so many moments like that another one is my favourite when Murad was driving that girl back from the pub and she was crying. He didn't even console her or made her feel better and the Doorie poem with perfect lyrics describing the situation played in the background

    Just to mention my thoughts on SKY character which is termed as useless by many viewers... Kalki kind off played a real life person Rajakumari, who has collaborated with Devine, reaching to him after watching a RUclips video. If you guys have noticed, Murad also uses the word "Rajkumari" for Sky, when they took him for vandalising. Also I like to mention that.. Rajkumai herself has also been casted in the movie, as the female judge in the rap-battle audition.

One- where Alia cries and painfully says I just go to medical college, clinic and home that’s my life, I also want to go out, party and wear lipstick. Second- where Kalki and everyone go about painting graffiti and paint the fair and lovely add “brown is beautiful”
    Thank you 🙏🏼

    I think kalki's character was important since she helped ranveer to look at the upper class world from inside and being a part of it, which he didn't explored while filling up at driver's job. Also to get in the house of kalki and the bathroom scene where he measures it. It wouldn't have been possible in the film if kalki's character wasn't there. I feel a full justice to her character has been given as well .

    • @squiggles2311
      @squiggles2311 5 лет назад +10

      ankit saraf I agree totally...also when Murad asked her, “why do you like me”...or something like that because he couldn’t understood why someone like her would like someone like him ...she told him he’s an artist and that’s what mattered ...in a way she gave him(rightly or wrongly) on some level...legitimacy as a musician/rapper.
      Also it is biographical because RajaKumari (Indian artist from the USA) did contact Devine through RUclips and they collaborated on songs...
      Kalki/Sky definitely worked for me in the narrative

    • @pujasangoi8532
      @pujasangoi8532 5 лет назад +11

      The bathroom measuring scene at Kalki’s house was one of the most significant scenes of the movie done in silence. Haven’t sent anything like that in movies before yet it’s such a realistic scene that shows Ranveer’s eyes opening of what the upper class actually means which in turn motivated him to work even harder to get his own place for his mom.

    I am not a cinema expert but I could be sitting at this table with these guys being super excited like they are. Because it's been so long, so long that a "Bollywood" film has been so on point, so long since Zoya gave her best, sooooooooo long since I saw Ranveer show how brilliantly capable he is that he is way beyond this crazy loud guy that he showed the world that an actor can be possessed by a character in a way that we see no trace of the actor himself. Am feeling so proud of this film because these people I feel have been mine. Even the rappers whome I got to know about very recently but as soon as I heard Naezy at the very beginning I was super happy and proud, when I saw the names of Naezy and divine on screen, every time arl real rapper came on screen, when they sang 'asli pane ko tu ane de' I felt immensely proud of all these hardworking artists who are all finally getting the name and fame they deserve.
    P.S. after this I would not accept anything mediocre from Ranveer Singh I hope he makes better choices

One of the news portals that went all out trying to implicate Kanhaiya Kumar as anti-national was Zee News and the original Dub Sharma track came out in support of Kanhaiya Kumar. The original version even had the student slogans. Seeing the new song release under Zee Music label really made me chuckle. I was like "the song came a full circle" lol.

    People need to appreciate such films so that Bollywood can improve upon its story telling and build complex character arcs. Most of our movies are so one dimensional that one movie like Gully Boy bring glow in our faces. We need more such movies. Remember we cant make CGI heavy expensive films like hollywood but our film industry is old enough to be at least on par in story telling.

    I know my comment, in all probability will be ignored. I just want to put my view on certain things. My review on the in house critics:
    1. Anupama Chopra: One of the most elegant speakers I have seen on RUclips since forever. I watch your reviews just to listen to your kind voice. And I'm inspired by your daughter Zuni(I read a whole book series just because of your video on Books On Toast.)
    2. Sucharita Tyagi: Protect her, Keep her with you forever, FILM COMPANION!!! Humne keh dia na Chopra sahab is par laga dijiye... Coz She's an absolute genius in decoding a movie. My go-to reviewer for any and every movie I want to watch. Love you Sucharita!!!! Keep doing the amazing reviews you do. And NEVER let the negativity pull you down. You're the best!
    3. Rahul Desai: I only watch this guy during "Let's Talk Movies" episodes, so I don't know much about him. I can only say from these episodes that,"Bro, tu bahot downer hai bro." Always so sad and wanna-be intellectual. Har cheez mein galti nikalna jarurat nahi hai. Thoda chill kar bro. Itna pareshan mat raha kar.
    4. For complete Film Companion: You guys are doing an absolutely amazing job. I love everything about this channel. I watch all your content. I was a bit disappointed that you guys didn't put out a Let's Talk Movies episode after Manikarnika. But well, everyone has their own agenda. So I guess it can't be expected from anyone in the world to stay neutral. Honestly, the movie(Manikarnika) was a little underwhelming for me. But still it wasn't very elegant of Anupama to not interview Kangana before the movie or skipping the Let's talk Movies episode after the release of the movie.
    Okay... All said and done. I love this channel and I love the content you are putting out there. Cheers!

Also posting something on social media doesn't make someone a good human. Action speaks louder than words and whatever they do for the society or the country doesn't have to be on social media. Kalki's char was important kyonki 1. Poor or less privileged ppl always look for acceptance from ppl way beyond their reach. Both Ranveer n MC Sher knew they were good but when Kalki gives them chance that's when they realise how good they are. Also MC Sher behaves like Sher when he is in his area but look at his body language in front of Kalki...he acts so shy..
    2. Aalia thinks she is very bful and way too good for Muraad. It reflects in one of her dialogues with him. So Kalki s track was imp for Aalia to c Muraad can be taken away if he wants by other equally or more bful girls.
    3. Thru Kalkis char Muraad gets to c how upper class ppl live from inside their house.

      Minal Sharma wow great points. I’d like to add that Kalki’s character also provides the morality angle for Murads character. He falters but also makes a decision even after breaking up with Alia to not pursue or encourage Kalki. Based on this decision Murad and Safeena come back together. So I agree that Kalki’s character provides the flow.

    This was such a great break-down - it was like you three were mirroring my exact sentiments during that post movie glow!
    After such a long time, I walked out of a hall absolutely ecstatic and joyous about what I just experienced - it just takes you out of your zone and places you in the middle of a world that you can't get enough of, and are given the right tools to experience and explore.
    Phenomenal movie, and an equally exciting experience to discuss it with voices and perspectives that are able to peel the layers of this onion with some tears in their eyes.
    I have decided to see luck by chance again because Zoya and Reema deserve this frenzy for their work. Also, I love these break downs guys - it is like a one way reddit thread for hindi movies :).

Alia is another who has been surprising me since highway, there are many nuances and yet such simplicity and honesty to her acting. This movie was like a poem to me, I felt it emotionally and visually. Great job to the cast director and cinematographer too 👏👏👏

    The fact that sky’s character is underwritten may highlight that rich people will come and go but does it really affect the working class?
    It is a smart contrast to most other movies about upper class people where the working class characters are underwritten. I.e. if Rahul bose's driver changes it hardly impacts their life. Similarly, if people like sky come and go from Murad's life, they can hardly impact his life or change his situation.

    I cannot express the feeling of how proud I am feeling after watching this movie.
    I always criticize Bollywood movies because of its cheesiness and flashy dance numbers, star casting for totally inappropriate roles just because they have more public appeal, comic relief characters, shallow characters, hypocrisy, over obsession with love stories, mindless drama etc....... BUT,
    this movie is the proof of new era of film making in India.
    because its box office hit without being all those things I hate about Bollywood.
    that;s why this is a special movie for me.
    I hope Bollywood keeps making gems like this every month, after all we are the highest movie making country in the world!

    Now where we could have cut the movie...I feel in the beginning. Ranveer's entry could had been cut and paced faster, same with Alia's...
    Though quite everything was important for the story, but when you don't know what to expect, it feels a bit streched in the beginning.
    Though the movie is masterclass after half of first half.
    I REALLY LOVED THIS MOVIE. Feeling like "jaane kitne dining ke Baad, GULLY me aaj Chand Nikla"

    These people are discussing about a film which has exhibited brilliance in all departments of film making which Manikarnika did not have. They spent almost so many minutes discussing only about supporting characters and how they were treated in the movie....could this happen for Manikarnika? Kangana cut everbodys role and made it only about her. Has Kangana ever appreciated her film crew....technicians, artists etc. The answer is a big NO. Manikarnika is a good film but not brilliant. So there cannot be a discussion about Manikarnika. So don't bring feminism, nepotism blah blah here. Period.

    • @sagarthorat9175
      @sagarthorat9175 5 лет назад +5

      Kangana speaks all the time about technicians..and has discredited actors many times..in many interviews she has said that technicians don't get their dues and it's actors who are overrated ..
      Neither Ranveer or Alia have spoken about technicians.
      You have a star worship characteristic and want to put fucktards like Ranveer and Alia on a pedestal and worship them.
      Don't spill bullshit here. It's not about Manikarnika vs Gully Boy. It's just they could have discussed the movie as well.

Why is Bollywood not giving her the benefit of the doubt? More than that, kangana was phenomenal in the film. Yet not even a single word. As per the supporting crew, I don’t know how the film turned out when she took up the charge. But the Sonu Sood’s entry scene was not required.

    Kalki 's character was actually quite well written. I agree with rahul. That last scene of hers when she says to ranveer that you dont need to thank me. And the way she didnt let the difference in the 'material things' in their lives affect their relationship was kind of path breaking. There was no useless drama or fight between them. Works well on character level and direction for me.

    That question about live recordings was pretty clear cut, there's a clear difference between how a live recorded track sounds vs how a studio recording sounds. This was my big criticism with the music of Rockstar as well, that they used studio recordings rather than attempt a live sounding record.
    Gully Boy falls in the same trap sadly, live sounding mixing needed to happen to make it sound more authentic. A Star is Born did this really well.

    Please get your information right. The problem with the use of Azadi wasn't because the film was apolitical or just because of that at any rate. The version of the track that appears in the soundtrack REMOVED references to caste based discrimination which was there in the original version. This is definitely a form of appropriation if not hypocrisy in a film that purports to speak for an oppressed class of people. I was disappointed that Anupama did not pose these charges to Zoya Akhtar

  • @kittaspassion9972
    @kittaspassion9972 5 лет назад +2

    It was a masterpiece. No doubt about it! Zoya is THE finest filmmaker in the country rn.
    But I guess the film was too niche to appeal to the audience which it finally did. It was dark and gritty at times.
    I honestly thought it would finish under 50crs. Holy .... it did 140cr. I guess the audience taste is still the same with sonchiriya flopping. GullyBoy worked because Ranveer Singh was selling it and he’s the youth icon rn.
    And honestly he deserves a national award because he SOLD the film with his performance. If you had any other actor playing Murad, I’m pretty sure the film wouldn’t have been this coherent.
