I trained Choy li fut for some time and eventually I developed knee problems. While it is true I also practice other impact sports, I think a proper technical explaination of the stance as the one in this video would have saved me a lot of troubles in terms of overcharge, muscle pain, etc. It is a great video, and I also recommend people to not rush, strengthen your legs enough before attempting to hold the stance for too long, and pay a lot of attention to your position. Get the stance right first, then you can hold it safely.
We do Horse Stance with feet only at shoulder width apart. Like sitting on an imaginary stool or riding a real horse. You have to keep good verticle posture while doing it though. So you might not go so low at first, once you build your strength at that level, you will be able to go lower and lower while keeping good verticle posture. I like how you show the original and ancient horse stance in this video but you lean to forward when doing it with thighs parrallel with the ground. You need to hold it higher at first, so you aren't leaning forward much at all. Hold it until you can barely stand back up. You can exercise your knee muscles by squating and rotating your knees in circular motion outside and thrn inside. You can have your feet together and squat a little, put your hands on yours knees and start doing small circular rotations, then stand slightly wider and do large circular rotations. There are muscles inside your knee cap, so build them up to protect your cartilage.
@Diego Aguila knees and shins straight (not going past toes) and your thighs must be completely straight horizontal while keeping back straight. If you cannot achieve that, start higher.
Horse stance should be like a triangle toes always pointing straight ahead not out to the sides Hips should never be lower than knees If done correctly you will cultivate internal force.
@@psyendacy Wutan Kung Fu Way: In horse stance, the knees always goes slightly past the toes when thighs are parallel to the ground. In bow stance, the knees are directly over the toes until opening the door for a kick. In self defense situations, you never have thighs parallel with the ground, it is only for strength training going that low.
@@jefferson8215 In Wutan, toes are slightly pointed out for stability. Like military standing at ease has toes pointed slightly outward. Wutan follows Toaist rules, natural way. In our philosophy, if you are worried about toe angle, then you aren't following nature's way.
@@jamescobrien here what your saying of course natural standing is natural standing that being said just stand natural don't squate? i can tell you the signficence of the width and depth, your hips are very week from sitting, your inner hips and stomach muscles ( everything required for root lock)... when you go into horse, you pull in with your inner thigh muscles, when you are leaning so far forward in your horse at 4:38 it means that your inner thigh muscles and root lock have failed because they are weak and structure is broken. , u gota pull legs together and apply root lock... the low wide stance is used to train horse stance, as you get better with ma bu your stance can get narrower and narrower as your core strengh increases (kwa & dawn) ; old guy will be as strong standing straight as a newbie in full ma bu I can HIGHLY recommend looking at Sifu He Jing Han ; he's a Bagua master, and he's blooody good, he speaks ALOT about kwa and dawn, the other stance is goat clamping stance, this is also very mis-understood, this stance emphasizing wide very angled feet opens up the sacrum and stretches this area this is the speciality of it, also a training stance, the real fighting stance has toes sliiightly pointed in, so the edges of the feet are parallel. see sifu sergio for info about goat clamping stance :) Everything leads off sacrum, if sacrum isnt open, horse stance will fail, and if inner thigh and stomache muscles (root lock muscles) then it also fails, sacrum defines direction and mobility, and surounding mucles provide structure. when you apply root lock it stablises sacrum and lower spine, see info about spinal wave to learn about sacrum
horse doesnt have to be static either, u can move slightly ; another thing is that you train tendons and connective tissues ; also you should be hurting in your inner thighs not outers :) u gota pull legs in, think of it like an arch and your hips are the key stone, your mucles pull the structure in to maintain it, as the tendons get stronger you should be able to hold it for very long time, important to get the right amount of tension :) doing horse on some bricks can help this, if you press out too much you fall off blocks, if you pull in too much u also fall off :) as skill improves, stack bricks higher when you take horse stance walking, u end up with bagua circle walking (see Sifu He Jing Han, he's the best) horse stance represents the supporting leg, and there is no muscular difference between doing horse on one leg or two legs
That's interesting. I noticed that westerners are doing a wider horse stance, modern shaolin too, than my hung gar sifu (very traditional) would teach, where the horse stance was just a bit wider than shoulders...but not that wide.
That's what I thought! You or one of your students made a negative comment on my brothers RUclips page accusing us of steeling the first Choi Li Fut form (Jaw Sang Ma/ or "lively horse in English), but when viewed back to back the forms are almost Completely different. When I attempt horse stance I notice that my torso/back leans forward the farther down into the stance I go, despite my efforts to keep a straight back. Is this because my form is wrong? Or because I haven't built up certain muscles yet? Probably a combination of the two, but any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Austin, this is common and happens when you have tight or weak hip flexors. The Psoas muscle pulls on the spine and creates the arch as you sink into the horse stance. To stretch this I recommend using the "modified Thomas test stretch" with a youtube search you should find a video on how to do this.
My son's kung fu class does three horse stance; 1st level, 2nd level and 3rd level horse. But have a different position of their hands for each. Is that a thing? I cant find it on the internet.
i once bought a book called iron palm in 100 days from lee ying arn there was a picture of an old hager man breaking like 100 bricks with his palm. i saw few more pics of this man in a choy lee fut documentary (buk sing?) and i saw that they actually don't go so low even in gumbu stance kinda more upright but still center of gravity lowered so kind of semi low. is the low stance for muscle building but not for actual combat?
training the low horse stance is the best exercises you can do for body and mind in my opinion. when it comes to actual combat it's not going to be very efficient, but from training it you will have huge benefits in everything else
THE knee if trained when the student is young can be done with the feet facing forward but if you are older when you start say 20 its best to turn the feet in a slightly out in a more diagonal direction an easier less taxing knee position. The older the person the less extreme the posture. The more overweight the more danger of knee damage. If the student has to much sex it can damage or deplete. No mention of how to breathe where to aim the breath and the circulation of the breath. No mention of how to fix the eyes. No mention of how to blow the legs up with hay filling the danteen . It is really useful for stance breaking and taking the centre in combat great against throws. A special type of hashish was used in part of an initiation to stance training this is one of the oldest traditional methods the hash is now unobtainable and had unusual qualities This traditional method is now lost but it can still be done through other non-drug methods A good test is to feel stronger at the end than the beginning of training and masters liked to do this because it gives a feeling of smoothness, strength and vitality it keeps the body powerful. The fists are hovering at the waist connected to the waist channel There are 18 structural points and 12 bad bad methods, 4 directions, too much to go on about here and the foods and herbs the best times to train , good places to train bad places to train, quite a lot more to this . The medication if it goes wrong etc.
That's really the best horse stance tutorial on the internet!!
