    Being a movement trainer as well as martial arts coach, I'm a big fan of movement culture and the pursuit of body-mind mastery through movement practice. I train using movements from boxing, capoeira, kickboxing, kungfu, and other eastern martial arts as well as calisthenics, aerobics, acrobatics, and yoga. This movement journal is mostly me immersing myself in my passion and sharing it with anyone who is interested. This first journal entry is about the horse stance from shaolin kung fu.
    Its a great movement for:
    *deep hip stability and strength
    *opening the hips to provide mobility
    *strengthening tendons in the hips
    *creating power for fighters
    *creating stability in the central column (the spine)
    *and rehabbing the negative effects of sitting to long
    I use this movement mainly for maintaining power in the movements that require deep hip activation and for reversing the negative effects of sitting too long (a side effect of my love for art).
    Whether your an artist, a desk worker, a competitive martial artist or a just a human movement junky, I can't recommend this movement pattern enough. Give it a try and see what you think. Leave a comment below to describe your results.

      Hi, fellow artist here (mini painting), have you thought about making a video for artists (and people hunched over their other projects at a desk or tablet) specifically, adressing their typical issues and movement needs? Your dual background would be most suitable for such a video... I have learnt a lot from your hanging and glute videos by the way and I'll add the horse stance to my arsenal as well, thank you!

    I was reading about ED and found that TMC (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and masters recommend this horse stance as a way to build inner power within the body. People mistake this for just a leg workout but its an internal stabilizer which really builds up deeply within the core the body, activates the Quads which are the biggest muscle in the body which also triggers massive blood flow throughout the body. Its something which has really triggered and propelled me into this workout. Im going to start doing this everyday the Shaolin way.

    Those traditionnal stances are incredibly effective for correcting posture and for longevity. I have been practicing sino-vietnamese martial arts for more than 15 years now (with some lays off I must admit) and we do practice it slightly differently with the feet as parralel as possible while keeping the knees externaly rotated. This allow the pelvis to anteriour round, and, as you mentionned, we keep the shoulder blades retracted with the fists resting close to the rib cage.
    What many don't seem to understand is that those traditionnal stances are not meant to be used in a combat situation as shown. Their purpose is to reinforce muscle and tendon strenght by exaggerating deliberetry the position, the combat stance being more upright will take advantage of the forcefull training.
    Thany you for your great work and fantastic drawing skills.

      ShapeShifters Den I'm starting to do it as of today. I can't hold it for very long yet but just doing it for a few seconds feels so relieving. I jumped off the top stair wen I was probably 4 to the very bottom my pinky toe on the right foot became displaced. I had a cast and the pain went away. But after all these years I realise through concentrating on self awareness that my toe never really healed and my whole body has been off balance because of it. I realise that it's responsible for my flat feet, not that I was born with flat feet. and imbalances in my whole body basically. this stance really relaxes my hips and groin just like u said in the video. this is really a gem. hope u keep practicing the stance and may God bless u with great health.

    • @moversodyssey
      @moversodyssey  7 лет назад +6

      Keep up the good work! I had a bum knee that altered my form for years and limited everything I did. After a lot of awareness training I realized my knee wasn't actually injured anymore. It was constantly sore because I had subtly altered the alignment of my joints to compensate for it when it was injured. It was the compensation habit that was causing the problems and not the injury, which had actually healed. I would check your toe and foot for the same thing. Often the compensation will be found in the joints above or below the old injury. So for the toe I would check ankle , knee, and even hip. Hope it all works out, good luck!

    • @moversodyssey
      @moversodyssey  7 лет назад +7

      Often back problems pop up in boxing due to hip misalignment. This happens a lot in boxing because moving from one stance is often the norm. Because of this I always have my fighters do conditioning from both orthodox and southpaw stances. If your back is still bothering you maybe check out some videos about posterior pelvic tilt and anterior pelvic tilt to see if you suffer from one of these hip alignment issues, both are very common. Thanks for watching, hope the back is feeling better!

    Doing this with punches helps take the mind off the burning in the legs. Take it easy when starting and get lower gradually, or your knees will pay the price. Careful with foot placement so if you feel pain on the inside of the knees then adjust your stance into a more comfortable position. In my karate days we used to do this with someone standing on our upper legs, like in a piggy-back while the person doing the stance would do about fifty or a hundred punches. Then switch partner and climb on his back. Fun.

    This video is very enlightening and it expanded my knowledge of the horse stance's benefits, well done! What you say is the "Kung Fu horse stance" is actually the southern Shaolin one, I do the northern Shaolin one which is lower and has the back rectangular to the floor, as well as the shins pushed a bit back. I have made a related video, but my posture goes a bit bad after the second min because I couldn't film me next to a mirror. Try it out! P.S. It is also effective for combat if you are facing your opponent from the side because your leg will make it hard for them to reach your upper body and core and you have easy access to their abdomen.

    I only really know about the horse stance from Drunken Master 2 when it is used as a punishment. I sit at a desk these days, and before that while I was on my feet, it wasn't that active. I wake up with intense pain in my knee caps, and squats and knee lifts only help so much. I've tried this stance, incorrectly, before, and even improperly performed it helps relieve the pain. So, this is the first time I've really looked into it, but I think it is the solution to my knee pain.

    • @moversodyssey
      @moversodyssey  7 лет назад +3

      If your doing a lot of sitting and horse stance is helping with the pain, then there is a good chance your hips are out of alignment. Google image search anterior and posterior pelvic tilt. Stand normally and look at yourself sideways in the mirror and see if either of these patterns fits you. No matter what you will have to free up and open the hips, horse stance is one of many great exercises for that. But there will be other specifics based on which pattern you have. Hope that helps, let me know what you find.

    Still the best explanation on the horse stance to date! Could you do some of the other stances (Bow Stance, Cat/Empty stance).

    One thing I've observed from watching different arts (mostly Chinese Martial Arts) is that they do a lot of punches to the side from horse stance. As they do this, they shift from horse stance into more of a wedge or front stance to that side. I'm a combat sports guy, so forgive me if I am not familiar with terminology. Sometimes they start in the front stance, and throw an externally rotating punch while snapping BACK to horse stance.
    From my observations, this seems to be teaching proper hip, leg, and foot rotation into these punches. Just like a boxer will rotate. And yes, I know, good mechanics is good mechanics across the arts. I'm just impressed by these exercises, because I can clearly see how it would teach someone to throw, let's say, a cross with good rotation and then coming back to the stance via rotating the other way and throwing another punch like the opposite hook.
