  • In this video I try to answer some of my viewers questions, in particularly why wealthy people pay so much money to charter a yacht?
This is a more "off the cuff" style than my usual vlogs...please do let me know if you enjoyed it. I hope to answer many more of our questions in forthcoming videos.

David, count me amongst the ones that like this sort of video. I’m looking at it two ways: 1- the lucky viewers get their questions answered 2- helps you with content, probably a lot less editing in this format.
Regarding reasons people who can afford a yacht, chartering allows you to try out various designs, and will allow you to decide what you want and don’t want on your yacht. I would imagine there are a lot of people who charter who eventually make the leap to ownership. The second reason could be, maybe it is cheaper to charter than to ship your yacht across the Atlantic or Pacific to cruise where you want to cruise. Just my thoughts.

The advice I've seen from yacht brokers consistently is "charter for several weeks a year for a couple of years first; find out what you like and don't like. THEN you can choose effectively what to buy or build."

On a yacht I have my privacy, can be with the people I want to spend my time with, go to and eat wherever I want to. The pure stress of changing cities and hotels all the time is just not worth it. But if that is your thing, go ahead.

Hi David. You did a pros and cons of charter and owning a yacht many moons ago. The reason to charter is one payment, no hassle boating. Ownership is one large payment and constant amounts of upkeep, fuel, berthing and maintenance. The other option is co-owner to spread the cost. You always have good content, im looking forward to the next with antici . . . . Pation. Great video thanks 😊 stay safe 👍

Outside observers perceptions of charter income is always way off. Chartering a single yacht no matter its size is no way to get rich. Even small yachts who short or day charter full time make only modest returns once the running and operating costs are factored in. Having been a guest on a couple of superyachts and having stayed at some of the best (so called "7 Star") hotels I can attest to the fact that service on a yacht it is nothing like even the finest hotel. People charter for privacy and escape from their busy lives even in a luxury hotel you are surrounded by strangers.

  • @MartinPHellwig
    @MartinPHellwig 3 года назад +11

I have delicately caressed the like button in a downwards matter :-) But back to the topic, I think a factor that may also play a role is for the person who wants to charter a yacht is to explore if they like it. I would imagine if someone has the financial room to charter a yacht of that type every year for three weeks or so, it may then be an attractive proposition to purchase one to your own taste and requirements instead of being stuck with someone else's design decisions and timetable.

Excellent content, this is exactly what I want to see now and then. Yacht tours and factory visits mixed with behind the scenes on how the business works and financial info like this is a great mix I think. Btw, I'm sure you've seen Nicks series "Meet the owner" on the Aquaholic Channel which I find very interesting. You seemingly have personal access to owners of much bigger yachts, is that something you would consider doing? I know many yacht owners like their privacy but some of them could surely be willing to be interviewed on how they reasoned on buying instead of chartering and so on?

David, I'm a recent subscriber to your channel. And I must say, that I have thoroughly enjoyed every video that you have put up. Like most RUclips viewers, I live vicariously through well-made content. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a yacht (or even charter one) but the quality of your videos truly lets me experience places and luxuries (albeit in my imagination) in a manner that other videos showcasing luxury crafts do not.
Furthermore, your videos have enhanced my vocabulary quite a bit. And I now know precise terms (both nautical and design terms) with which I can describe interiors and exteriors. Not just of sailing crafts but even rooms and houses. A useful thing when you're trying to be a writer. So, thank you for everything. And I look forward to seeing more of your content.

David, I really do enjoy your videos and especially the Q&A videos like this one. Personally, I do see the pros and cons of both ownership and charter. While it's nice to have one single vessel at your immediate disposal, chartering takes a lot of stress from those who just want a week or two's vacation.
Personally, if I were "financially qualified" I would love to own a ship (sail or motor) capable of traveling around thee world. To have places like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and French Polynesia would be an absolute dream come true!

I would be interested in hearing about the trans-Pacific yachts. I live in Hawaii and we see some beautiful yachts - but surprisingly, not too many do a port call here. I found this video interesting. I too read most of the comments and an surprised at the lack of knowledge displayed by some. Having watched hundreds of videos I have learned a great deal about how yachts of all sizes operate. Aquaholic, Frasier, Super Yacht Captain, Esysman, Nautistyle and of course your videos have all provided a wealth of information. My individual research has revealed technical details on specific yachts as well as yachts in general. I encourage any one interested in yachts to do the same. Then there would be much fewer uninformed comments to weed through. But try to keep comments respectful.

On the subject, very informative. For a leaser it's less hassle, for the owner it reduces their running costs. But for the crew, doesn't that also keep them occupied more than the owner could? Does a crew stay on during the quieter breaks in the owner or charter guests using the ship?

David, I really enjoyed this video. One thing that comes to mind was the owner of M/Y Lady Joy stated that she built and bought the yacht because on a particular charter she asked the Captain to orient the vessel in a particular direction in a sheltered cove. I wasn't a see keeping or safety issue according her, but the Captain didn't want to do it. There was nothing she could do about it. Another thing that many wealthy people have décor tastes that might not be reflected in any charter yacht available. Yachts reflect the likes of the owner and what is stunning to one is garish to another.

Hello David, very enjoyable content as always. Although I think you missed a couple important points here. First, chartering a yacht is a great way to "test sail" her before a purchase, or to find out exactly what you want on your own yacht. Secondly, even if you do own one, sometimes it just doesn't make sense to move it. Say your yacht is currently berthed at Monte Carlo and the kids asked about a Caribbean get-away this weekend. Just to move your own yacht across the Atlantic is gonna take 10+ days and half-a-million dollars of fuel. And then double it for the return trip... Yes you can easily afford the fuel cost, but it just simply can't get there on-time. It would be so much easier to charter a yacht in the Caribbean, while getting your private jet ready. Cheers!

I'm not a subscriber yet, I'm not even a boater, but, am looking at early retirement next year and doing ressearch now about being an owner/operator of some type of explorer vessel (Bering maybe). So, in saying that, I don't know why people would get upset about information being presented. Information is information and it's up to the reader to accept or not. Social media is a very toxic place (Twitter potentially being the worst). In any case, thanks for the videos. In my view, unless one intends to really live aboard their own vessel, or at least, spend a substantial amount of time on it, chartering makes sense to me. I can go have my holiday, then forget about any work or expense that may come later. PS I just subscribed.

New subscriber, great content on your channel. Really appreciate your expertise and experience, particularly sharing the average charters per year stat. You’d be lucky to cover the 10% operating costs, let alone the capital expense. I wonder how often an owner charters another vessel in another part of the world to avoid waiting on their own yacht to meet them there. Again, great channel!

Enjoy your videos and would really more on chartering. What is a week-in-the-life of a charterer? How do the guests and crew actually intermingle? Formal or more casual as the charter progresses? Keep up the great videos.

Thank you for your videos. Personally I'd rather own than charter just so I know I can go where I want, when I want, with whomever I want. And know no one else has been sleeping my bed and such.

I liked the video delicately. Just remember that many of the people commenting’s only yacht experience is watching Below Deck.
Could you please make a video about that show, how realistic is it, what perceived influence do you reckon it has on the charter market ?

Chartering a yacht makes sense IF you're rich you've some money but don't wanna be responsible for maintenance, insurance, and crew.
Yacht ownership makes sense for someone who's wealthy that loves yatchts and doesn't worry about the financial aspect of owning one.
